(YEAR: 2026) WHITE PEOPLE NOT WELCOME! FLY PLACED IN OUR COKE, PURPOSELY! My husband and I ate here several times after moving to Lafayette, LA. We noticed the first 4-6 times that we didn't feel welcomed. I'm not sure why we kept returning. (It's close to where we live and convenient to run in and eat.) Most of the clientele seemed to be of Mexican / Spanish descent. We are not. Most, if not all, of the waiters and waitresses speak Spanish ONLY. They speak little to NO English, so ordering is difficult if you speak English, only. The last time we were there, I tried to accept only 1 of the 2 different dips they place on your table with chips upon being seated. (I was trying to not waste their food since we usually didn't eat that particular one.) Since the lady placing the dips and chips on the table COULDN'T speak English, we couldn't communicate what we were trying to do. She assumed we were treating her disrespectfully (I think) and being unappreciative. We got a fly placed in our classic bottle of coke we ordered with our meal. And without a doubt, it was placed there, PURPOSELY. We've never been back. I wonder if the owners know what's going on in their business there. Simply delicious Mexican and Honduran cuisine that gives you a good bang for your buck. Due to the incredible value and large portion sizes, we were delighted to try the unique Honduran flavors that La Papa Loca had to offer. We ordered the Honduran Tacos, Pollo con Tajadas, and Birria Tacos. The Honduran Tacos were super flavorful, stuffed with chicken and topped with salsa, white cream, and pickled radishes. The birria tacos were also nice and juicy and although the shells could have contained a bit more cheese, the dish was still packed with lots of shredded beef alongside the consommé. The Pollo con Tajadas dish, however, was the star of the show. This dish featured warm and crispy fried chicken topped with pickled radish, soft plantains, and three different sauces. It was unique while still being familiar, akin to ordering chicken and fries from a Southern joint. Our server was also super sweet and she gave us free queso with our chips and salsa. La Papa Loca also had a variety of different agua frescas to choose from--from the melon juice to the warm and cinnamony horchata. I wasn't too impressed with the Jamaica juice but the melon juice was phenomenal. All in all, I definitely see the value and quality in a place like this and I'll certainly be back to try the menudo and famous "La Papa Loca" dish. 7/10 stars ~ read more

Our first time here today and gotta say this is one of the best spots around for tacos and burritos. There's so much flavor in their birria consomé. The service is amazing and they seem to really care about how they treat their customers. 9/10 definitely want to try more food here again. We finally found a terrific Mexican/Honduran restaurant in Lafayette that serves birria tacos. They are open late, which is fabulous, and the food is fresh and authentic. When we arrived, they were pretty busy, and the hostess offered to seat us on the less chaotic side of the restaurant. From the moment we arrived, every staffer we crossed paths with was smiling and welcoming of us. We were presented with a large and comfortable booth and attentively greeted by our waitress. There must have been a couple of large tables or a small party seated on the other side of the restaurant because service would sometimes get slightly slow. I'm sure they were over on the other side cleaning up, but whatever the case, our waitress apologized for making us wait. She was quite delightful. We ordered several things to try, and everything was delicious. Their food is not overly salty like many Mexican restaurants in the area, and they use delicious spices, like cloves, to season many of their dishes. The plantains were outstanding and one of my favorites. We will be back to try some of their other dishes very soon. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for the real deal! read more

Probably one of my favorite restaurants in Lafayette that I visit regularly. The gorditas are my personal favorite. The service can be a little slow sometimes, but it's never been an issue. I've even brought larger parties with me and there was enough variety on the menu to make everyone happy. They usually have soccer playing on the TVs at the bar if you're a sports fan. read more

Lafayette has A LOT of Mexican places. It's a running joke that every time new construction breaks ground here its either gonna be another Mexican place or another car wash. It's just ridiculous how many car washes and Mexican places we have...lol. Maybe that's why La Papa Loca is often overlooked. I think people picked a favorite Mexican place from the plethora of choices years ago and just stuck with it and never ventured out. A mistake, because this is truly the best one. La Papa Loca started out as a food truck with street tacos, gigantic burritos and a little thing called word of mouth. It soon became a brick and mortar place, but in a pretty terrible location that was hard to get to and even harder to park at. It's now moved into this place, which is better location wise, but still kinda off of everyone's radar. Pro tip-if the place is filled with out of town workers who happen to be the same ethnicity of the food, it's a very good sign you're in for a big treat. HORRIBLE SERVICE! My daughter and I were visiting from New Orleans. NEVER AGAIN!! We sat there for 24 minutes before I decided to ask someone to get a waitress/waiter. The booth we were in had a wad of gum on the wall. We were treated so unfairly. The waitress that dis assist us was nice but we were TOTALLY ignored by the other 4-5 staffers that passed us. First time at the new location. Great service and great food. The aguachile was terrific fresh slight acidity from the lime juice the shrimp were soft but not mushy. There was no fishy smell or flavor even though they were almost raw. I know the lime just helps to slightly cook the shrimp but they weren't in the lime juice that long. Haven't had a cerviche style dish that good in a long time. Simple but delicious The carnitas taco O MY!!! The tortilla was soft but chewy great corn flavor but the meat. Moist , full flavored my lips were kinda greasy after each bite. The meat tasted fatty but it wasn't it was chopped into a mince. Just freaking delicious. Haven't had a carnitas taco that good in Louisiana ever. Wish I had ordered more than 1. The hot dog was good but it was just shot dog. I will be back very soon. Thanks for a great meal read more

One of my go-to's spot in Lafayette, so I was stoked that there was a location closer to me.. however, the new location is not as good as the old location. I was a little disappointed. My most complaint is that they didn't wrap their tamales with the husk. It was so dry and inedible. The tacos were also mediocre to the original location. The Papa Loca potato was still good though. Note that we did order food when they first open the new location, so hope to come back to a more improved establishment in the future. La Papa Loca specializes in Honduran food, and that food is absolutely spectacular. Every time I draw every time I try a new restaurant for the first time, I always have to baseline their food.... Meaning I've got to go with the basics of what represents I think that food category. If it's pizza... I'm going for a pepperoni pie. If it's Italian... I'm going for the spaghetti and meatballs. If it's Thai food... I'm going for the pad Thai. If it's Chinese food... I'm going to try the lo mein and the fried rice and egg rolls... You get the point. The tacos here are definitely my baseline measure... And if the tacos are any indication of what the rest of the men you taste like, this place is simply amazing! I tried the asada, the al pastor, the carnitas... And everything was absolutely heavenly! The spice was on point! The hot sauces, both red and green were creamy and spicy and amazing on the palate! Great food and very reasonable prices. I've been twice now, once for pick up and most recently dine-in. The tacos dorados Hondureños were super good and a solid choice for something on the lighter side. What I liked better though was the enchiladas verdes. I got mine with steak. The verdes sauce slaps and the steak was just what you want from a Mexican / Mexican adjacent restaurant. The portions are generous and the drink prices are reasonable as well. I personally got the carnita in some taco and it had NO flavor. It tasted like they took the pork unseasoned and boiled it and put it straight on my tortillas. We took the kids here one Saturday shortly after they opened this second location. We had never found an opportunity to make it to the first location but since this one is closer we had no excuse. The service was very slow. They were awfully nice and the host was very straight forward about the food being slow but we decided to stay anyway. All of the dishes that came out, ours included looked really good so perhaps some may find it is worth the wait.the food did not take quite as long as we were expecting but did come out in stages. The food was really good. My son ordered a steak tostada but had filled up on Spanish rice and chips so I has to eat it. It was delicious. My wife enjoyed the tacos, as did I. I had the tacos dorados, fried chicken In rolled up tortillas kind of like taquitos or a flauta. Went here with a group of three couples and our kids. Food was delicious we tried almost everything on the menu I feel like. All great. The chips and salsa is confusing because every time we asked for some we go a different hot sauce type of dip. Literally a red one, green one, white one and orange one. We never complained because they were all delicious. The waitress was so good and patient with our indecisive group. Only hiccup was at the end of the meal they told us they couldn't split the check amongst the three families which is something you should usually say when you seat a big party. The food here is def not tex-mex nor even traditional mexican that I've tried. Everything here is authentic! I had never tried hondoran mexican food before, it is different. I'm not a fan of pork which is what most things consist of. I got the chicken quesidillas which were pretty good. They had a unique flavor. The serving was also huge. My fiance got ribs or something like that and he said it was ok. The tamales were pork and had a strong flavor but if you like pork, you will probably like that. Also the tamales are HUGE! They use black beans instead of pinto I believe. They also serve horchata. If your tired of regular mexican, try this place, you may like it! read more

We had been hearing about this place for ages before going there. First of all everyone kept saying it was Mexican so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it's Honduran food. I'm an extremely particular eater & usually won't eat meat at a strange restaurant but I got the Honduran tacos with shredded chicken & it was so good! At the Johnston Street location, my food was good, and the service was quick. Our waitress was very pleasant. The only downside is that the tables, booths and chairs are serious need of replacement. My grandmother noted that our table was literally falling to pieces on us, and that her short ribs were mostly fat and gristle; what little meat there was was too tough for her to chew. read more
