Found this place when we were in town for my daughter's quiz bowl competition and it was the perfect place to sit and enjoy a good breakfast. We got one of the last tables available, and we were glad we got there when we did because it stayed full the whole time we were there. The food came out quickly and was very fresh. I had a hard time picking one what I wanted because everything on the menu and what I saw coming from the kitchen looked so good. I opted to make my own omelette with swiss cheese, jalapenos and bell peppers; hashbrowns and a biscuit. They advertise that the biscuits are the "world's best" and I have to say they are VERY good. The hashbrowns were perfectly cooked and I could have eaten a second helping of them. This is a great stop if you're in the area, and I feel like I need to make some regular trips to Lafayette to work my way through the menu. read more

Delicious food, excellent and quick service in an old school diner that has stood the test of time! We recently dined at Mel's for breakfast and our favorite noms were the house potatoes, liver and onions, and the hot fluffy biscuits. The thick gravy poured on the liver made me do a happy dance and the biscuits were large and extra hot. My fiancé ordered the beef scramble and while not particularly flavorful, it was extra meaty and piping hot. The pancakes on the other hand, were a dime-a-dozen and suspiciously reminiscent of the hot cakes my grandparents used to order from McDonald's. All things considered, this diner had such a cool atmosphere as the walls were donned in neon colors, quirky sayings and 1900s memorabilia. [I especially loved the yearbook pictures featured in the bathrooms.] If you're in Lafayette, I recommend giving Mel's a try. Can you call it a world famous biscuit if it's baked in a muffin tin? I missed the fluffy edges of a traditional biscuit but it was moist and tender. The grits were boring and i would've preferred my sausage broken up in the omelette rather than just placed whole but it was a good start to the day none the less. Service was fast and friendly but the diner is small and I can see the wait being long during rush hours. I wouldn't wait to eat here but I would return. T-Coons is much better. read more

We decided to try this location as we had enjoyed the other location so much! Our server was very patient with all of Julies questions. It's a nice place set up like a fifties diner, pinks and turquoise and black and white with a lot of chrome! It's a 24/7 diner with breakfast and supper full time! I had the #22 breakfast with French toast Julie had a chicken fried steak plus we got a pair of meat loaf dinners to go! Only down side was they were out of ice cream. I've been there for lunch and I've been there for breakfast. Both experiences were great if you like diner fare. Seating is limited, so you might have to wait a bit for a table unless you go in early. Technically, that's a good sign. Here's how fantastic customer service is here at Mel's. I came in for lunch one day recently and my waitress was training a new waitress, so I couldn't help but hear most of their conversation. OG waitress spotted one of her regulars in the parking lot and said to newbie waitress, "He's going to want a sweet tea, no lemon." Sure enough, he walked in, sat at the bar and ordered just that. Now that you know service is awesome you might be wondering how the food was. I ordered a Ham and Cheese omelette, bacon, hash browns and a biscuit. The omelette was great, with loads of cheese and ham throughout. The bacon was nice and crisp just like I like it and no complaints here about the hash browns. The biscuit was hard and dry and I hardly touched it. Mel's claims to have the best biscuits and I have had them at the Broussard location and thought they were amazing. Maybe it was just an off day for biscuits? Maybe they were thrown off by my random request for breakfast food at lunch...I don't know. But the biscuit was not up to par that day. Still, I'll be back. Mel's has a great neon lights, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis divey diner theme and I love it. Great comfort food for a steal while dining in the company with cherished idols? Do not waste your time unless you are willing to just throw your money away for bad service. Horrible food and overcharging. Watched a customer that ordered some food not only not get it right the first time. But they messed it up. Then they charged the people more than what it was supposed to be. When they asked to speak with a manager the waitress stated she was the manager. When the guy then asked well is there anything you can do since you are the manager. She crawfished and stated well she doesn't control prices and is just a waitress. Better places to eat in Lafayette and surrounding that at least treat their customers with respect. Maybe go to Waffle House where they are nicer. Hub city is a good place as well and have never seen what I saw tonight. Biggest issue that the customer had was they uncharged the little girl for some cheese when she didn't ask for it. They choose to add it, and then she got nothing else on the nachos. So from what I could hear the nachos were just a small amount of shredded cheese and chips for $10. Not recommend anymore has changed a lot over the years read more

Foods always fresh and service is always friendly. We had a late breakfast. Eggs and sausage with hash browns and toast. Came out hot and fresh and cooked perfectly. I love "the Wets" it's fries and gravy doesn't sounds like it would be amazing but it is. Get them you'll love them. Menu is always the same as they have been doing this for years and years. The rebuild diner was nice. We had lunch with the six of us. Our server was great! Terribly overrated place. I'm from Lafayette and it's really popular but I've had a terrible experience here. My food took 45 minutes. I ordered a wrap and I might as well have hired a drunk 4 year old to make it. It was clearly a store bought tortilla and there was barely any filling. It's sad. There should be a Mel's in every town. Even with a little wait, we were seated quickly and the wait staff was attentive. First time stopping by we sat at the counter. The staff had time to chat and exchanged pleasantries, even though the place was hopping! Our second night in (late night both times after Festival International), we were seated at a table and got menus quickly. In and out in under 30 minutes! The food is awesome. Fresh, fresh, fresh ingredients. I'm a "breakfast all the time" person, so I enjoyed the pancakes (they have a secret recipe....) the first night and a BLT with a fried egg on night two. Both were delicious paired with the home fries. My hubs had a western omelette and then an open-faced turkey plate with the creamiest mashed potatoes I've ever eaten. It was a delicious plate of brown gravy and looked so pretty too! The ambiance is right on. Vinyl tables with the boomerang design and sparkly diner chairs and booths. Little know fact about me...I love a good diner. With that being said, Mel's didn't disappoint. I've only ever been during typical breakfast hours, so that's usually what I order. I've had the pancakes and French toast there before and both are pretty awesome. During my most recent visit I ordered a western omelet, minus the ham and add cheese. I added the home fries instead of grits or hash browns. I was very, very happy with my omelet. It had a good amount of cheese and the perfect amount of grilled onions and bell peppers. The home fries were just ok to...they weren't fried crispy enough for my taste. My husband ordered the Monterrey chicken with home fries and a bowl of vegetable beef soup. The soup was very tasty and perfect for this chilly morning. The chicken was good as well but needed a little more seasoning, even though he asked for it blackened. Overall though, it was good. We also tried out the biscuit with the homemade blackberry jam which was good...the jam was just a little too sweet. Overall I really enjoy Mel's and hope to be back soon! read more

so my last review was a very bad one but shortly after the owner got in touch with me and his wife offered to send vouchers which I do not need. the owner handled it in the best way possible by just listening to what I had to say and assuring me that the employee was let go and it wouldn't happen again. like I'm the last post even tho it was a awful one I did state the server we had was amazing she apologized many times made sure we got are delicious food and we were doing ok the entire meal. the food or service wasn't or never will be a problem I will definitely be back. the owners definitely made me see they really do care!! read more

I have been to mel's diner several times now and I absolutely love it. It is a 50's style diner and the atmosphere is wonderful. From the music to the upholstery it screams 50's. Personally, as a person who loves the era, this place is the best. The first time i ate here it was lunch time so i had the grilled fish with carrots and mashed potatoes. The fish was cooked perfectly, the potatoes were delicious and the carrots were heaven on a plate. The next few times i have been there for breakfast. Breakfast is served all day everyday which i love. The pancakes are the best. They are light and fluffy and i could eat a million of them. The eggs are great and their bacon is really good. Now i am not really a sausage person on a normal day but i took the liberty to try one and i can say whole heartedly that i will be switching to that from now on. The staff is so friendly and make sure you have a great experience. I have a special needs child who is non verbal but that doesnt stop the staff from trying to talk to her and tell her they love whatever outfit she has on that day. She also does not like her powder milk to be cold when made up so i ask for hot water and they ask me would i like for them to temper it already which is so kind and very much appreciated. I would recommend this diner any day of the week to everyone i know. If anyone wants good food, good music and a good time should come to mel's diner! read more
