This was probably my favorite meal from Barcelona. Why, you ask? Because the seafood is fresh, the prices are reasonable, and everything is so flavorful. The lowdown: - Walk in and stare in awe of all the different types of seafood just lying on ice there. There are things you've never seen, things you wish you'd never seen, and things you know you want to eat. - They do try to upsell you, and it normally works. Because why wouldn't you come here when you're hungry? - Point at what you want and how many of them you want. Ask them to prepare for you...I believe they can steam, fry, and salsa it. Read great things about this place and wanted more seafood before we go into the interior of Spain. We were expecting a line as it was around 830pm Thursday night when we got there. Lucky for us there was no line and the restaurant may be half full. They have all the fresh fish/shellfish on display and you pick and choose a) type of seafood, b) amount c) how you liked it cooked. (Steamed, grilled or cooked in marinara sauce) For b & c the lady working the counter basically made those determinations for us. This did not strike me as odd as I read from another reviewer they have a good idea of how much ppl want. Unfortunately for us, this approach ended up costing us more than we had expected. In the end it was our fault as we could have said something when they rung up the bill as they hadn't cooked anything at that point. We ordered 4 crawfish, 6 shrimps, one bundle of razor clams, two handfuls of small clams, two handfuls of baby octopus, lobster bisque , salad, bread, glass of wine and a large beer. This all came to $73 euros for two people. It's alot of food but my wife and I both swear the lady said the soup and salad came with it and only realized it did not when we looked at the receipt. We should have clarified that as it doesn't make sense with their setup. My wife and I both don't speak Spanish and it could have been a miscommunication . We were in what must be one of the most touristy parts or Spain and pricing seemed reasonable. Step one- walk in and see what seems to be a fish market. Look to your companions with question marks appearing over your head. Don't worry you are in the right place. Step two- look over the mixture of living and recently departed offerings from the sea available that day. Step three- like a king at a royal banquet choose your desired feast and tell them how you want it cooked. while they are cooking it pay and drink a beer. Service was fast and atmosphere is laid back. In fact service is so laid back you may feel the need to repeat yourself as they seem to actively ignoring you. Like others mentioned, you know the seafood is good when you see all the Asian people lining up at the door. We waited about 20 minutes before we got to the seafood counter. It is just like an open seafood market. Prices are listed on the small signs. Pick what seafood you want, then they will cook everything for you. It's so fresh, some of the seafood is still moving when you're ordering. Go find a table and wait till they call your number when the food is ready. Everything seems to come out at random times. It was a little chaotic trying to weave through busy restaurant every time a new dish came out. We would be mid-trying to peel/devour a ton of shrimp, then suddenly have to rush to the pick-up counter dirty hands and all. The razor clams were DELICIOUS!!! I was so mad we only got one order. Make sure to come early! I heard lines can get pretty long, so both times we came to line up before they opened. You know it MUST be a Good Deal when you see a ton of Asian people lined up down the block, around the corner, and down the next block too. Especially when it's a line for seafood. This rule apparently applies all around the world... even in Barcelona! So in line we followed, with the promise of amazing fresh seafood (also with the reassurance of rave reviews on Yelp). When the line moved closer to the restaurant, we were able to examine the menu posted on the windows. The prices weren't bad at all, and we started getting hungry after reading the list, especially because we had just done an extensive tour of the super nearby Sagrada Familia, the famous basilica designed by Gaudi. Hours of looking at fine architecture will make you ravenous. The line continued in front of the fresh seafood itself on the way to the cashier. This is the Pure Torture section of the line. You can literally choose your lobster! After paying we picked a table and sat down with our order number displayed. FOOD (4.5 stars): ------------------ Once the seafood started arriving, it was pure bliss. Everything was just as fresh as people had claimed! The **Raw Oysters** were shelled and shucked just right, ready for us to enjoy. I'm not usually a fan of any sort of clams except in chowder, but the **Steamed (Manila) Clams**, but these were excellent with a great marinara sauce for dipping our bread. I also don't usually do squid, but the **Fried Baby Squid** were so crispy and tasty! We also had **Grilled Razor Clams** and **Grilled Prawns**, all delicious. The only seafood here I would NOT recommend is the **Grilled Tuna**. I thought it would be seared lightly how they do it here, but it was cooked almost completely through, which means it was really tough and chewy. AMBIANCE/SERVICE (3 stars): --------------------- It's what you'd expect for a fresh seafood market/restaurant. A must go to place when in Barcelona! I've never been to a restaurant like this but I definitely enjoyed it (I went twice!) and would recommend it to anyone who's a fan of seafood. Our first time there was a little confusing, but you walk in and most likely will wait in a line which gives you time to think about what to get. There are menus and pictures outside as you wait! It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but basically you just pick what you want, and based on how many people are in your group (for most items) they know how much to serve you. It's VERY FRESH and the food can be grilled or fried. You then pay and sit, and they call your number as your food gets finished and you pick them up with the ticket. Two days later, we gave it another shot and it was open! The way it works is, you walk up to a seafood counter, pick out what you want and tell them how to cook it for you. A long line for a good reason!! Probably the best seafood I've had in my life?? Or I was just super hungry when I arrived. We had a feast and decided to get everything possible that we wanted. The highlights- prawns are so yummy and juicy and you can taste the charred pan it was cooked on (it's a good kind of charred). Lobster- a bit expensive at 25 euros but worth it. My only complaint is I wish I received this first! I was so full by the time it arrived. (Also, everything comes out in different stages, and you have to pick it up at the counter, which makes for a hassle when your hands are all dirty from all the seafood you are cracking and shoveling down your mouth.) The grilled octopus tentacles were so delightful! (I recommend this over the baby octopus) The salt and oil vinaigrette that it comes with is so good!! A bit salty however. Razor clams- can't go wrong there! We ordered a kilo of mussels which were good but not a highlight. If you do choose it, get it with the tomato based sauce. The stuffed crabs were great- lots of meat, just lots of work as usual, if you choose to have it with the salad, be warned they oversauce it with their tartar sauce. Otherwise, it was great. My least favorite items were the baby octopus- a bit bland, and the monk fish- also very bland. We also ordered a salad that was untouched so don't even bother ordering this. This was probably one of my favorite dining experiences while visiting Spain! As soon as you walk in the door, you are greeted by a display of fresh seafood. Once you select what you want and how you want it prepared, everything is pretty much self-service. Your receipt has a number on it and you walk up to the kitchen counter when called to pick up your order(s). My eyes are always too big for my stomach so I over-ordered: fried baby squid, grilled razor clambs and langoustines in garlic sauce, steamed mussels, salad, bread and assorted beverages. As explained in other reviews, the process can be a bit confusing the first time, but it ends up being very straightforward and fun - all prices are listed per kg and you get to choose from as many types of fish, crabs, lobsters, squids etc. as there are available (usually a very broad selection). Pick how you want it to have it prepared, any choices of drinks and receive your order number. As soon as it's ready, they'll call out your number, you pick up your dishes and enjoy! The mini octopus and the navajas (a long type of shellfish) were particularly tasty, and prices are very reasonable. Yes, Asians love them some good seafood. The place opens at 1pm and so happened we finished touring Sagrada Familia so decided to go here for lunch. Got there quarter to one and there's a small line already. Right after we arrived, the line started to grow longer. The place didn't open until 1:10pm. By the time they opened, it took the group in front of us a long time to order. Basically you line up, have one person grab a table and one person stay in line to order, then pick your seafood, place your order with the lady behind the seafood stall, pay at the cashier down a little further, get your drinks, then sit at your table and wait for the kitchen to call your number. Pretty much the seafood is either steam or grill for you then mixed all of them in with some pesto garlic sauce and that's it. With fresh seafood, no matter how you make it, they all taste good. This place is a must-go for seafood lovers (aka my mother). It's essentially a fish market that cooks for you right away; you get to pick what you want and tell the kitchen how to make it (grilled, fried, steamed, etc.). Everything is super fresh. My family actually went twice during our week in Barcelona - that's how awesome this place is. Oysters (Raw) - My dad was a huge fan of this. Each oyster is quite big and worth the price. Mussels (Steamed) - They were cooked to perfection the first time we went, and slightly overcooked the second time we went. But otherwise, very fresh and flavorful. Tuna (Grilled) - Seared on both sides, super raw and juicy in the middle. The slices are very big, so make sure you have a large party for this. Monkfish (Grilled) - It definitely has more flavor than most white fish that I've had. Monkfish Soup - Most fishy soup I've had in a while, and it was absolutely delicious. Squid (Grilled) - This was my favorite. Very tender and flavorful. Razor Clams (Steamed) - These were only okay. These are sold by the bunch (rather than by weight), and there weren't that many per bundle. This is probably due to the fact that it probably wasn't in season in January. After you pick all your seafood, you order your drinks and pay at the counter. Then you get to pick your own table, and the kitchen will call your table number over to pick up each dish as it's done. What an awesome find! I'm glad that I went with someone who had been there before, otherwise I would have been lost. We got to the restaurant 15 minutes before they opened and there was already a line. When they opened, it wasn't the most organized place. They just kind of yell at you "what do you want?" There is a huge icebox full of seafood. You just point to the kind you'd like and tell them how much. You don't specify how you want it cooked because it's only cooked one way. The thing to keep in mind is you MUST like seafood to eat here. The only things on the menu besides seafood is a salad and a soup. There are no sides. That's it. But I promise it's worth it. The prices were very reasonable. We had a ton of seafood and two bottles of wine for about $30 per person. All of the food was super fresh. I loved the grilled octopus. The calamari was also good. My wife found this place online, saw the good reviews, and knew it was meant to be as it was 8pm (exactly the time the restaurant opened for dinner). Consistent with the reviews, there was a line going out the door. However, it moves pretty fast. Plus, it's always a good sign when you see almost all Chinese tourist in there. The concept is to order in line and you'll point at the different seafoods you desire. We had crab, oysters, monk fish, shrimp, razor clams, calamari, and the lobster bisque. Just the fact they have cameras to review when customers dispute food orders should tell you something. Great place to eat if you are nearby Sagrada Familia! The food here is FRESH and so delicious! The biggest surprise to me was the tuna steak, I would recommend that if you never have tried it. La Paradeta is a popular, fun and delicious dining experience just a short walk from La Sagrada Familia basilica. Basically, there is a huge counter with dozens of different fresh seafood sitting on ice and you tell them how much you want of each item and they will ask you the different ways that the item comes prepared such as grilled or fried, and also any flavoring options available. They will weigh your selections and you simply move to the next counter to order your drinks and pay and then grab a table. You wait until they call your number which they will do as different parts of your order become available. Note: I don't know why but google maps was completely wrong on directing us to the street (Passatge Simo) where La Paradeta is on and we ended up wandering for a bit and then asking some locals for direction.
