I had such a special experience at La Parrillada de Covina, not only because of the food, but because of the story and people behind the restaurant. This woman-owned Mexican restaurant has been part of the Covina community for more than 20 years, and I loved learning that the recipes and traditions come from four generations. During my visit, I had the opportunity to meet Ana, the owner, and Lucy, who walked us through many of the dishes. We tried the queso fundido made with house-made chorizo and Mexican cheeses, guacamole con chicharrón that Ana prepared herself, café de olla, hot chocolate, eggs with chorizo, eggs with potatoes and bell peppers, menudo and pozole. And just when we thought we couldn't eat another bite, we finished with sweet plantains served with a sweet cinnamon cream. I come here with my family for the menudo and pozole. I like the taste, I can tell the menudo gets very clean. The bowls are perfectly serve. The Menudo comes with hand made tortillas, onion, lime, Chile and oregano. The pozole comes with a taco and a tostada plus the extra toppings. We also have Fideo soup and we open with a queso fundido They also have freshly made aguas frescas which we loved, Watermelon and Tamarindo. I hadn't been to this restaurant in years and recently remembered about it after seeing it on Instagram. The service is really great the staff is very friendly. I ordered the pina agua fresca and it was delicious! I also ordered the Chile relleno plate. The chile relleno was delicious. I was a little disappointed that the plate didn't come with rice, and instead came with salad aside from the beans. Beans were ok. Overall a great experience. Restroom was very clean. They offer champagne flights (three for $23) and terrific Mexican entrees. They have a pretty extensive menu. I tried their Menudo. The menudo was very tasteful, came with all the usually accompanying oregano, cilantro, lemon. My only dislike was the menudo was a dark color. I'm used to a light colored tripe, otherwise it was good. I akso ordered a side shredded beef taco which was amazingly perfect and fresh. My sister in law had the machaca breakfast, which she loved, and ate it all !!! Chips n salsa were also very good and served fresh. The customer service, once i was sat was exceptional. We had 2 horchatas ask for 1 refill and more tortillas since we only had 4 tortillas for 2 servings of menudo. This place has always been a mainstay for me as far back as the 90's. It's an oldie but goodie with consistent flavors and service! For the last several Sundays I've door dashed their menudo and cafe de olla - always *chefs kiss* the best for a Sunday breakfast. Today we dined in - for the first time in awhile - and it was like coming home. The restaurant is festive with lots to look at and homage to cultura from floor to ceiling, left to right. I had a blended margarita and the enchiladas suizas - all well done, flavorful, and good! Past dishes I've had include the molcajete which was always piping hot, flavorful, and complimented by hand made tortillas. Service was excellent. I had a very disappointing experience. I asked if my meal would be spicy and was told it was not, but when it arrived it was too spicy for me to eat. When I politely mentioned this, the server repeatedly insisted it was not spicy. I simply wanted to move on and leave. Additionally, I ordered a kids' meal that included a soda per the menu. The soda was flat, so I requested water instead, yet I was still charged for the soda. When I asked about the charge, the server told me "You know what? You need to leave. Just go." with a nasty stank face and attitude. I remained polite throughout, especially with my children present. Really upset with these people. I have been there before for breakfast and it was good. Their Cafe De La Olla WAS literally amazing. I emphasize WAS, as they never seem to keep the posted hours for business. They say they open at 8am daily, NOT! Today I brought 6 of my colleagues for breakfast at 8am. We waited until 8:45am and still no one was there to open. This has happened several times over the last few months. We couldn't wait any longer as we had a scheduled business meeting at 9:30am. I had referred a friend to go there the week before and he said the same thing, no one was there to open. He went in later that day and was told they open at 8am, but yet they were closed in the morning again. And Cafe De Las Olla was not available. So what gives? If they aren't going to open during the posted hours of operation, please re-post the correct hours so we aren't waiting needlessly. 4 or 5 stars is out of the question until they fix their corrected hours of operation. read more

Our waitress was Lizzie whom I give a 5/5 star as well. Feeling profoundly grateful and replenished following an epic last couple of weeks where my bride of 26-plus years and I just returned following a truly majestic eight day, seven night cruise of the Hawaiian Islands. Today's review is actually culled from meticulous notes I took from our visit on SAT, March 4th. Our group of four, amassed of my beautiful bride of twenty six-plus years and our two (grown) boys, met here to celebrate the boys nineteenth and twenty-third birthdays. La Parillada de Covina became an instrumental stop gap measure for us this evening, because the nearby Lincoln Room refused to let us enter because they've a strict "21-plus only" policy and Casa Moreno in the historic old town Covina district had a 75-minute wait at 6:30pm on a SAT night, aka "date night." Our accidental discovery of La Parillada De Covina (LPDC) was a glorious one! A colorful melange of bright colors, eccentric cultural tchotchkes and Mexican trinkets greets you with all of the sublety of, say, a Juan Gabriel or Elton John performance! We came on a SAT night, meaning it was karaoke night and our ears were anointed by celebratory sounds of a gleeful would-be Jenny Riveras and Alejandro Fernandezes as they wailed away on a parade of Mexican pop songs. The family who runs LPDC work hard and harmoniously to ensure your overall happiness. And their sheer work ethic is unrivaled. Wouldja believe their menu touts how the restaraunt remains open 365 days/year?! We ordered simply enough. My bride, still infatuated about her figure despite zero evidence to suggest she's anything to fret over, ordered Ceviche with Avocados, my oldest son ordered a steak platter that came with a trio of sides including thick spears of plantains and my youngest son and I both ordered matching dishes- 3-item combo of a cheese enchiladada and two crunchy tacos de machaca. The food was pretty good. The asada and machaca proteins arrived well flavored and cooked, yielding beefy goodness with every bite. My bride inhaled her ceviche and the plantains were thick and well fragranced with a sugary residue. The rice and beans were, however, below par. The type of under-seasoned sides that are mass-cooked in the titanic pots that your Abuela uses to steam her Tamales de Navidad in! The restrooms are clean and well stocked, the walls pronouncing upcoming special events. For its flair, family-friendly vibes and colorful decor, LPDC reminds me very much of the former SIETE MARES restuarant which used to occupy the corner of Dudley and Holt in Pomona. Similarly, LPDC also sells huge platters of seafood or grilled meats served family style, for reasonable prices. So long as you're not expecting a white-glove, sedate (read: "quiet") dining experience, then LPDC will leave your tummy full and your pocket not terribly disgraced. read more
