I yelped some places my husband and I could check out because we are in Michigan for the weekend. I found this supermercado with La Perla. I loved the straight forward simplicity of a grocery store with a small spot where you can sit down and eat some authentic Mexican food. The agua frescas were delicious and perfectly sweetened it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet. Our food was delicious as well. The only negative I have to say is that the younger woman working there was acting extremely unprofessional and loud, she was screaming, acting obnoxious, flirting with men and my husband and I couldn't help but notice her playfully running from a man she worked with into a back room. My husband and I usually mind our business but it was hard not to when she was being very unprofessional and had a super flirtatious and inappropriate work demeanor. One should maintain some sense of decorum especially in a restaurant. Her behavior made us feel uncomfortable. She was too much. read more

La Perla es Muy Deliciosa! The tacos are so good we drive a half an hour to go eat at La Perla & it is so worth it! It is a grocery store w/ lots of options & produce. But, they serve food and there is a bunch of booths where you can sit. The atmosphere is vibrant & always buzzing. My hubby had the steak tacos & I ordered the chicken. Since my husband and I started dating back in 2011 we've been frequenting La Perla and it is most definitely our go to spot for Mexican food. I had a dire need for tacos, so we decided to get some from here since we hadn't been since the beginning of the year. I asked for 3 beef tacos on a flour tortilla with cilantro, onion, sour cream and cheese. My husband also got tacos, but he didn't tell me what he put on them. While eating, my husband kept saying what a good idea getting tacos from here was and I couldn't agree more. We plan on coming more regularly again, as we used to come at least one every other week if not once a week. Everything about this place is just great. They have a grocery store and a restaurant, so you can get some premade tacos along with some things to make food at home. I do appreciate all the baked goods as well and often request we get a few items. I'm so glad I got hungry for tacos because it means we got to come back to one of my favorite places. Biggest downside is sometimes the lines get super long and thet often won't answer the phones if they get busy. If they don't answer the phone, either come in or try a little later. The only reason they won't answer thre phone is if they are closed or swamped with orders. read more

OUTSTANDING Mexican grocery store and restaurant in Benton Harbor. My sister, brother-in-law, and his parents had came to La Perla once after finding it on Yelp. After their experience, they said it's a must-see whenever you're in the area and craving Mexican food. They were oh-so-right. There was plentiful parking. As we walk towards the entrance of the store, it was impossible to miss the signs written in Spanish advertising tours to cities in Mexico. Awesome. After passing through two automatic doors, you'll see a well organized and stocked grocery store with refrigerators full of any and every beverage you can imagine. Walk further straight and you'll likely see a line for the restaurant. That was the focus of this visit. The menu had variety but was focused. There's classic options that encompass tacos, quesadillas, scopes, tortas, and more. Long story short, everything was incredible. From the freshly prepared and supremely flavorful salsas through the piping hot tortillas and meat, it was a fantastic meal. The standout was Lengua/tongue. Ridiculously tender AND flavorful. Highly recommended. Pricing was reasonable too. Most items cost under $5/each so our meal for three people came out to just around $12/person including drink. It's a little sit down area of a Mexican grocery store. On the right when you walk into the store. We are not judgy if the food is good. Order at the counter. They will bring you chips and salsa if you are dining in and bring the food as it's done too. Ordered 4 regular corn Mexican tacos with chicken, one with avocado, half order or 3 chicken enchiladas, large guacamole and Jarritos mandarin. The salsa and guacamole are both mild, better with the green tomatillo sauce for urn guacamole and the red bottle salsa for the salsa bowl. The chips aren't fresh and must be from a bag. The chicken tacos weren't bad, as were the enchiladas. The chicken taco chicken was not grilled but marinated pieces of chicken. The meat in the chicken enchilada is a mix of dark and light meat. The refried beans have a deep flavor, maybe cooked with lard? The rice is bland and boring. The food overall wasn't too bad. read more

Had both an el pastor and a carne Asada taco (Mexican style) and they were quite delicious... both hot and mild in house salsas were great too. So lucky to have found this place while passing through on a trip from Madison to Ann Arbor! Wanted something quick to eat but didn't want a fast food option, and this was perfect. Walked in and placed our order for three tacos and a quesadilla and it only took a few minutes to get prepared, so at ate inside before getting back on the road and everything was so good. We have been coming to La Perla for 10 years and love the food. However we have notice, in the past couple of years, a steady decline in the cleanliness and pride taken by staff in this restaurant. Tonight we went, and it'll be our last time. The restaurant was absolutely filthy, I had trouble letting my kids eat there. We couldnt find a clean table and the floors were covered in food and trash. This wasn't "hole in the wall" type of material, this was "is it safe to eat here" kind of stuff. There are a couple other service/order-related issues that cropped up as well, but they are nothing compared to the mess. this is the best Mexican food in our area and all the surrounding areas as well, we love it. But we won't be back until some pride in the cleanliness of the restaurant is restored. read more

The food here is really good and, they have a good selection of hard things to find. If you need something for a unique Latino dish here's where to go. Speaking Spanish well is helpful because the workers here speak Spanish as a first language. I have always had a good experience here and will continue to go. We came here to look for s'mores ingredients. Unfortunately, they did not have graham crackers, but instead we stayed for dinner. I ordered the carnitas plate (great portion, perfectly warm flour tortillas, wasn't that big of a fan of the skin), while he got the 3 chicken enchiladas (just the right amount of food for him). Talk about a hidden gem. This place like Arby's, they GOT THE MEAT. Their tacos and burritos are filled with not just meat but perfectly cooked and seasoned which is what makes them so perfect! Highly recomend the pastor, not many places can make it as good as they do I promise. Especially loved how you can have their burritos with pastor or chorizo with no extra charge. Get the pastor though! They stuff it so well with meat that they don't even use beans as a cheap filler. They do put cheese and sour cream in standard which I usually opt out of the sour cream to get more of that juicy meat taste. Their red sauce is pretty hot for the average person but with great flavor. The green was nothing special to me but still good. Not many places can knock out great meat and great salsa but this place does it right. The best tacos in Michigan are always in half Mexican grocery & half Mx restaurants and this one reconfirms the standard. Found this place when making a drive back from Chicago to Detroit.
