Was on the way to Chicago and was craving Mexican food so decided to stop by this place. I've had pretty mediocre Mexican food around this area so I had pretty low expectations. That being said, this restaurant destroyed those expectations. The choice of ingredients is large and tastes fresh. I saw that they were known for birria, and it did not disappoint. Also, the staff included things like queso and the consomé for free which would never happen at other restaurants. There is also salsas that you can bring to the table which I think is always nice. When you walk in, the menu is clearly displayed in large print, making it easy to decide before you reach the window. We ordered the steak nachos and steak tacos, and they were absolutely incredible. From inside, you can see the entire kitchen, it's spotless, one of the cleanest I've ever seen, and I used to work in restaurants. The staff was friendly and quick with our order. You can also choose to sit at a table, scan a code, and have your food brought right to you, which is a nice touch. I stopped in for 3 tacos to go. I tried the steak, chicken, and barbacoa. The steak was ok. The other 2 were bland. Both salsas were bland, one red and one green. They were out of coconut cake. My husband informed me a few days ago that a new Mexican restaurant was in Benton Harbor. Last night we decided to try it out. My husband got 6 flour soft shell tacos with steak, cheese and Mexican rice. I got a chicken quesadilla with everything on it, and a order of Mexican street corn in a cup. We also got the small size of granola and yogurt for my husband's mom. Everyone really enjoyed their food and we are all excited to go back to try new items. Delicious! My husband and I tried Sabroso! last night and loved it! He had a burrito bowl and elotes. There were many choices for what he could put in his burrito bowl. He especially liked that mango habanero salsa (I think they were homemade). I got the quesabirria tacos. SO good! It was beef (not goat lol). They were made well and wonderfully seasoned. The employees were very helpful. They saw us standing by the menu talking and came over to ask if we had any questions about the menu or wanted any recommendations. It's counter service. You order, wait for your food, and seat yourselves. They came and checked on us twice during our hour there. They asked how everything was and if we needed extra salsa or anything. Prices were fair. When you walk into Sabroso, you'll see a giant chalkboard which serves as the menu. After making your entre selection, you'll head down the counter to pick out the exact ingredients you want in your dish. For instance, you have choices for different types of meats, beans, cheeses, rice, and sauces. They also have vegetarian options. My wife and I started with the Crunchy Burrito, which is built on a crispy corn tortilla. Meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and guacamole were piled on the tortilla and then it was wrapped inside of a huge fresh-made flour tortilla and grill-pressed. Once it was warmed, a thick queso sauce was poured over the top. We chose steak as our protein and went with the hot sauce. Both were good choices for our daring pallets. I loved how the warm, soft flour tortilla was contrasted by the crunchy corn tortilla inside. The other contrast that I liked was the heat from the grilled tortilla, yet the lettuce and tomatoes were still cool and crisp inside. The queso was over the top! (Pun intended.) The Calibirria Burrito is wrapped up potatoes, cheese, onion, and cilantro and featured a meat known as birria. I've only ever had birria in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in the state of Jalisco. Jalisco is proudly the home of tequila, mariachi bands and...birria. It is a very savory and tender beef, lamb or goat which is slow-cooked and often served as a soup or stew. (Think of grandma's tender pot roast, but with chili pepper as the primary seasoning.) The chunks of potatoes in this burrito were large and firm, yet fully cooked. I've had mushy potatoes in burritos before, but not here. The fresh, citrusy bite of cilantro and the crisp pungent flavor of fresh onion really balanced out the more neutral and savory notes from the potatoes and the birria respectively. I enjoyed squeezing a little fresh lime onto the burrito, which lent an extra authentic taste. The large chunks of meat and potatoes in the Calibirria Burrito will leave you very satiated. Despite being stuffed like a burrito, we just had to try one more dish. The Quesabirria is one of Sabroso's most popular dishes (according to the owner), and it, too, stars birria. Three piping-hot corn tortilla quesadillas were folded into tacos which enveloped a generous serving of birria. The tacos were topped with chopped onions, cilantro, and radishes. It is served with a side cup of birria soup. Growing up, I used to dunk grilled cheese sandwich into tomato soup, and I imagine people in the state of Jalisco grew up dunking their quesadillas into birria soup. This is one of my favorite Mexican dishes I have ever had. I loved the gooey, melted cheese inside the grilled corn tortillas. The meat was so tender and flavorful, and dunking the tacos into the birria soup was so scrumptious. The fresh garnish on top was visually appealing and pleasingly fragrant. I tip my sombrero for this meal. Their service is quick, so technically I suppose it is fast food, but these are family recipes, served by family. The word "sabroso" means "tasty" in Spanish, and I believe the name is perfecto! read more

So happy to have Sabroso in Benton Harbor! We have been wanting to try it for a while and finally got to try it this past weekend. This is the third day since I tried Sabroso and I'm back for round two. The first experience was terrific. If you're out in Benton Harbor shopping. Stop in to Sabroso. You will no doubt will be pleasantly surprised. On my first visit I had the Calibirria burrito. It was amazing. I'm not going to lie that burrito was messy, but that is not a criticism rather a celebration of flavor that dripped on to the paper lined basket and stuck to my fingers. I did ask for it with the cheese crust. Which I did not get, but I think that was a communication issue that was on my side of the counter. I am always a little distracted when walking into a new restaurant. Plus, I have a 4 year old who is buzzing around all over the place, so if there were any communication issues no doubt that is on me. So my food was delicious. My sister got the Quesabirria plate with consume (Wow!). I ordered a Fritos walking taco and the kid's quesadilla plate for my daughter (I alway over order for her incase she gets spontaneously picky.) She loves her food which is a testament to how good the food is. It was all awesome and I was a little sad I did not take any pictures, because I always like to plug new restaurants if I have a good experience and I most certainly did. Especially this time of year, because it's about to get really frigid business wise for the restaurant biz, but we have nearly two more months to squirrel away some nourishment for the cold months ahead. Two days after my first meal at Sabroso and here I am again. I'm a creature of habit and I got that Quesabirria plate today with the consume and once again a walking Frito taco and child's quesadilla plate for my kiddo. I'm so sold on this place.
