When I was growing up, we only had this tiny shack of an Asian market so most of the time we would make regular trips to Korean grocery stores in Chicago. More recently, I kept hearing about this place so I had it bookmarked to check out the next time I was visiting family. Before we visit, my husband and I load up suitcase with non-perishable Asian goods since it's cheaper where we live. So the pricing was fairly fresh in our mind when we stopped by Pacific Rim. I was pleasantly surprised that most of the pricing was within a few dollars of what we paid in LA. I think if you need anything in a pinch, this is the perfect place. Although I have to say that the Sriracha was double the cost here, but that's pretty understandable. They have a wide variety of just about everything. Pho noodles, pad thai noodles, Korean style noodles, sauces, frozen goodies, sake, soju and veggies. It also looks like they rotate out their fresh produce with whatever is in season so it was nice checking to see whatever was new. Staff here is friendly and very helpful. Their restaurant always seems busy, so it'll be nice if they can one day expand and have a sit down spot at some point. It also seems like they rotate out some dishes so they can offer a variety. My mom really wanted to try their jjampong, but when we went to look for it, it wasn't on the menu. I'm so happy that Kalamazoo/Portage has better options now for Asian groceries and food. read more

Walking into Pacific Rim I was in awe! The staff is AMAZING. Helpful, courteous, friendly, well-trained. I was VERY impressed with the cleanliness and perfect order everything is. The shelves are well stocked, and everything is authentic. If you have a question and the staff doesn't know the answer, they will FIND the answer. If they are out of stock on an item, they will take your information and call when it's in. Will definitely go back. Plenty of parking, easy to get to their location. Don't forget to check out the "Turtle Chips!" and "Asian Oreos." But beware, oh, so good, but addictive! Definitely recommend PACIFIC RIM. read more

It is a self service style restaurant where you order at the counter, pick up your food, choose a seat, and clean up yourself. Visited Pacific Rim for the first time. I went in specifically for boba tea because I haven't tried it before. The store is very spacious and upon walking in, I walked straight back to "Cravings Deli." I was greeted by 2 employees who were SO nice and welcoming! My anxiety for being a first time customer was gone. I ended up getting what one of them recommended and I literally chugged it LOL. It was so so good! Also - the wait time for my tea was less than 3 minutes. All of the workers were friendly and eager to help! There are also tables and an area to sit and work - or chat and drink your boba tea with friends. I cannot wait to go back and just walk around the store with my boba tea! read more

This place was awesome! If we hadn't already eaten lunch, I would have loved to try some of the food they were cooking! I was able to find a few great things that I've had a hard time finding in Battle Creek, like my favorite sweet soy sauce and certain types of ramen (they have a ton). Big selection of snacks and candy and all sorts of grocery items, frozen foods, fresh baked goods. I tried a caramel crunch dessert and a berry cake that were both fantastic. Pacific Rim is a unique spot in Kalamazoo. You can come in for a meal or you can find quality groceries to prepare your own. But you know you really want to do both. I have had the Ramen, Spicy Beef Pho, a Korean Style rib, and pot stickers. The food is always full flavored, hot, and comforting. It doesn't feel as though you are eating in a grocery story. The eating area is large enough that it feels more like a little café. There is even a little structure that looks like a building with a window which give the space character. On the grocery side I have seen some outstanding food: large shrimp with the heads on, giant clams the size of your fist, and fresh fish. They have the least expensive tofu in town, a selection of quality produce and herbs, and a good refrigerated and freezer section. Ever since I came here, I have been making all sorts of Asian soups: Ramen, Pho, Miso, and a few I just make on the fly with Asian flavors. I love experimenting with the range of seaweeds and dried mushrooms they have available. They also have an assortment of dishes and cookware that have explored to had to my cabinets and draws. The staff here are nice and really knowledgeable about the products in the store. I asked one what I need to make hot and sour soup and he pointed out all the various ingredients with ease and told me how to use them. I have even talked with owner as she walks around helping people and checking in with how the prepared food is. If you have any inclination to eat or cook Asian food, you should get to know the people and produces at this store. read more

Finally I got over to check out the new location. I was really happy to see that they left the castle-like area and turned that into part of the cafe! (I did buy my son's crib here and then my boy's bunk beds when they were older! The location used to be a children's furniture and clothing store!) I enjoyed the larger space than their last location. It was really nice to walk through the aisles and not bump into towers of boxes like before. Their supply of Asian foods is amazing! And everyone is super helpful if you need help with what something is or what you're looking for. I do however think the prices are a little on the steep end, but I guess if you can't buy these products elsewhere that makes sense. The cafe food was excellent, but I was not prepared to spend $16 for one bowl of ramen and a boba drink! I think if they could somehow lower the prices they would be able to attract more people. I can't wait until they move to a new, larger location (229 W Kilgore) - they're targeting September but no word on an official date! The current location is packed to the Rim (pun intended) with various goodies. I've always found what I've needed here. I love that they carry Mae Ploy curries and Arroy-D coconut milk so I don't have to pay an arm & leg for Amazon to ship it to me. Every time I've been, it's always been the same gal working & she's always really nice and helpful. I typically have a hard time finding things and she's very patient. What an amazing place this is, a true asset in Kzoo/Portage! Once an easily overlooked gem hidden behind the Oakwood plaza, PRF is now located in a much larger and nicer space beside Lee's Adventure Sports on Kilgore. The sheer variety of fresh and frozen and prepackaged food, produce, spices, snacks, beverage - including imported beer, sake, soju, etc. - is dazzling, and the service is second to none. The new location is radically larger than the previous spot on the back side of Oakwood Plaza, so they're really able to offer an incredible selection. I've never seen so much ramen in one place! Not to mention so many different varieties of sake! Their refrigerated and frozen section is also significantly expanded and well-stocked. I do wish they had a little bit more in the way of fresh produce. Hopefully that section will expand as I feel like there's room in the aisle where they keep the produce to expand that section. While you're there, be sure to visit the incredible Cravings Deli as well (but keep in mind they have different hours so plan your visit strategically). Let's get this out in the open, first: I love lots of things about Japan. The culture, the animation, the games, and especially the food. I was that guy at college who'd stay in all weekend playing games and binging whatever, and the one who had stacks of manga in his room to counterbalance the stacks of fantasy novels and everything. One day last week, my sister came home with some noodle meals- these were usually nothing special; I kind of like them and we've brought home a number of the ones from places like Wal-Mart and the local Family Fare- you know, peel the top off, empty all the enclosed packets over the brick of noodles, fill with water to the line, nuke, and enjoy?- those. But these were covered in actual Japanese characters. I wasn't courageous enough to try one (it turned out to be spicy beef, if you want to know), but my sister told me that she was going to go back for more because they were super tasty and she wanted more, and I could come take a look for myself, if I wanted. Of course, I came along, and I found what is more than likely one of my favorite stores in the area. If you love things like pocky, sushi, ramen, udon, pretty much anything Asian and edible, you owe it to yourself to come visit this store. They have an absolutely huge selection of snacks, sodas, all of it imported from overseas. Craving a box of pocky? Come here instead of the Meijer's next door; where Meijer's might have three flavors, this place has a bunch. Chocolate, strawberry, covered in nuts, even some of the more out-there flavors like corn. Are you looking for something to drink? They have imported teas, sodas, coffees- they even have shelves and shelves full of ramune sodas, as well as more different things to try- I have a box of green tea wafer cookies I'm breaking open one of these days, and I'm hoping they're pretty good! But the big find was the noodles. Forget the preformed bricks with the little flavor packets that usually go for pocket change in the big box store, Pacific Rim has actual Japanese ramen, and udon noodles, both in brick and in bowls. If you need giant bags of rice for your next gathering, well... they have those too! Need sushi fixings? Come check their selection of asian fruits and vegetables- I saw Thai bananas, and many other things. Finally, yes, they do have an Asian bakery/deli that serves hot food. I will definitely be back to try something out from here, because we got there and there was a big line for it. I'd love some fresh ramen or to try a few other things out of there, but that just gives me an excuse to come on back and try more awesome stuff! Its new location is also incredibly easy to find- if you can find the Lee's Chicken on Westnedge, you can find this place. Like others have said, it's on that street between the Meijer's on Westnedge and the shopping plaza with all the stores (Fanfare, the chinese restaurant, Big Lots, etc.) . All you have to do is turn down that street and then turn into the parking lot, and there you go! We'll definitely be back again- 5/5, easily! read more

This was a surprisingly pleasant find! There are not a lot of Asian grocer in this area and while out here visiting family, we wanted to see if we can get something we are used to getting where we live in California (where there are Asian markets galore). What we found here blew us away. Given the smaller Asian population here, we were expecting the bare minimum. But this has everything we would want. It's a decent sized store, immaculately clean, and really great covid precautions. Mask worn by everyone, cleaning agent for the baskets, hand sanitizer available at the entrance, and even plexiglass barriers at the cash registers! We feel safe and every staff member we've came across are super friendly and nice. What more can you ask for??? They have a healthy selection of Asian vegetables (our main reasons for visiting), good frozen dumplings and buns selection, a really good selection of noodles and sauces, and even this Korean tofu soup starter that I typically get back home! New Asian grocery and deli in one! This place has been an Asian staple for me a long time since I first came to KALAMAZOO about 8 years ago. Finally, they have more space and deli which is a great combination. Shopping and get some brunch/ dinner. It's a great spot to catch up with friends and family too. It could get a little busy during evenings and sometimes on the weekends though. As a side note, When we went in to check out the deli, the cakes weren't labeled. As a person, who has a lot of allergies, I was afraid to try any. I tried to ask someone behind the counter and she wasn't able to give me the full contents in the cake. If there was one thing that discouraged me from shopping at the original location, it was that the physical plant felt like a cluttered basement. There was never a time when I didn't knock something over or trip on some carton as I walked through the aisles. There was so much wonderful stuff inside, only the inside was too small to contain it all. This new location on Kilgore - the former home of Tots to Teen - is a major upgrade. It is big and spacious with room to expand. It is the store I go to because I remain a faithful and dutiful devotee of the occasional instant ramen (must watch the sodium intake), and Pacific Rim has so many brands to offer. I have been recently enjoying a couple of brands that were previously unfamiliar to me but were recommended by the store: Nongshim Shin Black and Samyang Hot Chicken Flavor Ramen (Both are yummy but be advised that latter will burn your face off - seriously, Samyang should have a warning label because the sting of the spiciness takes my breath away). And I have always had a fondness for the soft and slightly sweet taste of Red Bean Buns, and Pacific Rim has them. And Pocky. Pity the billions who have never eaten Pocky. I favor the Chocolate Cream Filled Biscuit and Chocolate Almond Crush Biscuit flavors. I have never understood the Corn on the Cob Pocky. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. And the added attraction of an eatery (Cravings Deli) means that if I could award this grocery store 6 stars, I would. read more

This place is great! Always expanding. If you're Asian and homesick this definitely helps with that, or it'll make you more depressed because it makes you more homesick. Withe way, it has most of the Korean products you want/need, seems like all the Chinese stuff you'll see/want, but not a wide selection of Philipino and Vietnamese products. But they mostly have everything you'd want. They don't have too wide of a variety of vegetables. Good selection of drinks and alcohol. Medium selection of snacks. This is probably one of the nicest Asian food markets in Michigan. They packed a lot of things in their last small location, but their new spot near Westnedge has so much more room and the light from the giant windows. Usually, I wouldn't think to compliment a grocer on their decor, but this is probably one of the nicest and trendiest looking grocery stores I've ever been into. They keep a lot of their food refrigerated, so unlike other Asian food markets in Grand Rapids, they don't have that common odor in most asian markets from un-chilled produce, eggs, or seafoods. Their selection is grand, probably the biggest Kalamazoo has ever seen, and they make frequent pick-ups so they if they ever run out of something, it's never more than a short while. They also have a nice blend of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese foods. I'm hoping with this larger location, they might be able to expand further in their selection as well. Their staff is friendly and always knowledgeable about a lot of things and are always willing to help out and suggest new or more authentic ingredients so whether you're already an experienced cook or if you're trying to experiment with something new, Pacific Rim will probably be your go to. The new location now has a cafeteria, bakery, and patisserie section. Their tonkotsu ramen was pretty good and their cakes looked phenomenal, they're still brand new and are working on the rhythm of things, but so far, I'm very impressed with all the things this store has accomplished so far and all the new things they're trying. read more

Grocery store overload! But in a good way. Pacific Rim just recently moved to their new location off Kilgore across from Big Lots, next to Meijer. With the expansion of the grocery store, they added a "Cravings Cafe" which is pure genius. Cooked to order and fresh menu items from Beef Pho to Spicy Miso Ramen to Fresh Salmon/Tuna Poke Bowls. Such an amazing addition to not only Pacific Rim but to the West Michigan area. If you have the chance, come grocery shop while feasting on an amazing item from Cravings.
