Hands down the best fajitas anyone any my group has ever had!!! The steak is exceptional and prepared to perfection. Our waiter did a great job at providing suggestions. It did end up getting very busy by the end of the meal so the speed of the service slowed down. This is a great place to come for a special occasion as it is expensive however the ambiance and rooftop views are unmatched. We came to celebrate our friend's birthday and they made her feel so special by wishing her a good day and gifting her a delicious dessert. We sat inside and noticed it was extremely warm inside and by the end of the meal was ready to head outside to cool off. However, the delicious food made up for it! Came for the fajitas stayed for the rooftop vibes and amazing service. Good vibes from the moment I arrived for dinner at this 5th floor rooftop restaurant at the proper hotel. I was seated immediately since I had a rear batik which I do recommend making one in advance. I ordered ceviche appetizer and it was OK, nothing special but the appetizer I got chicken fajitas which were so yummy and a generous serving and come with unlimited homemade tortillas both corn and flour. The mezcal and Sotol drink I ordered was amazing. Servers were very attentive and seemed happy to be working there. The complimentary chips and salsa kept coming. We ordered churros for dessert which were also good, personally I wish they had cinnamon on them but that's just my personal preference. There is valet parking for 25 dollars plus tax at the hotel but if you can find street parking that's your best bet which also can be free on certain days and times of the week. I went to La piscina on a Monday morning for a lunch date. I had seen their place online and thought it looked really cute, plus it's on the fifth floor of a nice hotel so I figured the vibes would be good. I did make a reservation just in case, but I figured on a Monday morning it probably be pretty empty. I was correct - when I got there I was actually the first/only one there because they open at 11 AM and the reservation was for 1130. they give you the option to sit inside or outside, sitting outside is actually not that bad because they do have fans so even in the summer, it was decently pleasant. The pool right there next to the tables is also very nice in terms of vibes. Our server Pedro was very kind, very attentive and very helpful. The portion sizes were not that big relative to the price, that's the only reason I knocked off a star. The presentation of the food, however, was really lovely and the flavor was excellent! I got the snapper aguachile for myself - I think about two plates that size wouldve been enough food for me, but that was the only thing I wanted to order as it was about $22. My date got the tuna Crudo, which was even slightly smaller in terms of a portion size, and I think about $21. They serve everything with large thick chips and red and green salsa to start. I actually didn't really like the red salsa too much since it wasn't spicy enough for me. The green salsa was also not spicy, but it did have more texture and flavor than the red at least in my opinion so I preferred it (my date preferred the red though). The bathrooms are immaculate here; in order to get to them, you have to actually exit the restaurant part of La piscina and walk to the glass door on the other side of the walkway from where the restaurant hostess sits. Inside, there's a small hallway there with men and women's bathrooms that are booth style. Overall, I would come back to La Piscina if somebody invited me again because I did enjoy the quality of the food, however, the portion sizes were a little bit too small for me to justify seeking it out again. It makes me wonder though if they do have a happy hour, since I think the ambience around sundown would probably be excellent on the pool deck! read more

The Proper Hotel has gorgeous, tastefully eclectic decor throughout the property, and La Piscina is no exception. Located poolside on the fifth floor of the hotel, the restaurant will make you feel like you're on a tropical vacation rather than on a rooftop in downtown Austin. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and just about every item on the menu sounded good. We ordered: - Queso Fundido (5/5): It's hard to be picky about queso when you love cheese as much as me. The real star of this dish is the tortillas, which must be made fresh based on how soft they were. - Green Chorizo & Huitlacoche Quesadilla (4/5): I was expecting a lot for a $26 quesadilla, and this one did not disappoint. It's as big as the plate, and comes with a refreshing slaw on top to help balance all the cheese inside. - Steak Arrachera and Achiote Chicken Fajitas (no.10) (5/5): Now THIS is the correct ratio of cheese to meat. As a slow eater, I was so glad that the fajitas arrived on top of a grill setup so that the meat stayed hot and the cheese stayed melted throughout our meal. Honorable mention for the table chips and salsa, which were perfectly salted and crispy. Plus, who doesn't love when the chips are served warm! Full disclosure, I ate here after spending the weekend at a wellness retreat (aka eating unsalted, unseasoned, oil-free food), so any decent food would have tasted incredible. I came here with 4 girlfriends at around 10 am on Sat. We really enjoyed our experience. I made a reservation in advance but there seemed to be plenty of brunch seating at that time. The ambiance is what really sets this place apart. As others have mentioned it's above the Peacock within the Austin Proper hotel. The place feels fresh and airy with beautiful desert coastal decor. The service was also great. Valet parking at the Austin Proper hotel is expensive, so I always ensure to find street parking in this part of downtown. Even if I end up walking a few blocks haha. Unlike the majority of places in Austin, your brunch meal includes complimentary chips and tasty salsas. I ordered the queso fundido which is usually a favorite at Mexican restaurants but to be honest it was a little lacking. I won't hold this against them as my queso fundido standard are high. My friend ordered the chilaquiles and they looked delicious so I highly recommend that plate for brunch. Overall looking forward to coming back with a group of girlfriends! read more

Location: On the 5th floor inside the Austin Proper Hotel. Take the elevator Parking: Valet or nearby parking garages Food: Poached gulf shrimp soaked in coconut tiger milk! Lobster Quesadillas and the Table Top Sizzling Fajitas -- 10 oz. Prime steak arrachera al carbon fajitas (enough food for 3 people) with Bacon wrapped gulf shrimp. We also added scallops, but they tasted a bit odd. The flour tortillas are thick and soft... perfect with the tender prime steak! The cheese though... must be the secret ingredient that makes everything tastes so good! Drinks: Try the La Fresa if you like rosé. Elote Cobbler is interesting with bourbon and almond milk. The cocktails are very pricy. $18 for a cocktail, but the $44 meals come in great portions. Worth the try. Service: Seems understaffed, but we weren't in a hurry, so it was just fine. Overall I'd give it 3+, but not quite 4 stars. I met my friend Julianna here for drinks, snacks and a catch up. It's one of her favorite places and I imagine that on a night when you can take advantage of the patio not in the heat of summer, it's a delightful location for a rooftop bar. We were inside and the AC just didn't seem to be able to keep up with the windows and the opening / closing of the doors to get to the patio area. Parking: There is valet, but they were slammed when I drove up, so I ended up parking at the Austin Library Parking garage, which is just a short walk to the Proper Hotel. You will likely encounter homeless in this area. Drinks: We got the Texas Sandia and it was nice and refreshing with watermelon agua fresca and the glass had spicy tajin salt on it. Food: The chips and salsa that come on the table are good. The salsa is quite flavorful and very fresh tasting. We also ordered the piscina nachos with achiote chicken. They were good - I think it was 6 nachos per order. Be warned that as a fajita place (which we didn't eat), the restaurant is rather smoky inside as they are sizzling tableside and the ventilation is not that great. If that's something that you're sensitive to, you may want to prioritize patio seating. The service was attentive and friendly. We had to get moved midway through our visit as they needed our table to make a larger table for a group of 15. I've never experienced that at a restaurant before, but they were helpful in moving most of our stuff for us and apologetic (but I think they didn't have a ton of flexibility given how small the space is). On the note of the space being small, it does get loud in there if there are large groups - there were two large groups they night we were there, so it was pretty lively and noisy - with some guests opting to brave the heat on the patio for a slightly calmer vibe. I'd like to return when the weather is better for outdoor seating and to try some other food given the strong reviews I've seen from others in Yelp. read more

Overall it was a good experience - beautiful space, great food, nice ambiance. The staff was attentive however we did have an order mixup, hence the 4 stars instead of 5 stars. Along with drinks, appetizers, other entrees- we ordered 2 brunch fajitas ($32) which comes with eggs/hash browns. When we didn't receive our eggs/hash browns we asked about it and our server said "you ordered the brunch fajitas". I agreed, and said it comes with eggs/hash browns. She then states she entered the fajitas meal for us. Then asked us if we want to PLACE AN ORDER for eggs and hash browns. Very disappointed because I had been raving about the brunch fajitas with eggs but instead got charged for the fajita meal ($46 steak, $34 chicken) and then would have to place 2 orders of eggs/hash browns. The "proper" (pun intended) thing that should have happened once she realized she entered the wrong order, was bring us 2 orders of eggs/hash browns at no additional charge. Outside of this, everyone enjoyed their food. But when you are paying $250 for 4 people, you expect to receive what you ordered and not because the server entered the wrong order. read more

While looking for an outdoor brunch option to meet up with a few girlfriends, I came across La Piscina. Being a big fan of the Proper Hotel, didn't look any further. There was no availability in Open Table for outdoor seating, but added the request in the comments and they delivered. Our server was friendly and attentive. Gave us enough time to catch up, but also made sure we didn't feel forgotten. I ordered the crab tostada and the chicken torta. The torta was huge, definitely enough to share. The tostada order brings two bite sized tostadas with chilled crab. The crispy leeks are a nice touch for texture. Had a margarita de la piscina and a madre tierra. They were both great choices. Had to deduct a star due to cocktails taking forever, especially the last one of my friends ordered. Our server at some point told us they had a new bartender that was not up to par and she had to redo a drink, so maybe that was the reason for this. This was easily the best fajita I've ever had. First off the location was beautiful there was a soaring view of the park. The bathroom was bigger then my apartment, there's also a rooftop pool. The pickled vegetables with the guac were tangy and crunchy. They bring out a silicone skillet that is constantly caramelizing the queso as you're eating. The lemonade was tart and refreshing. They have vegan and vegetarian options. The tortillas come in a holder that keeps them warm and the skillets are kept on a burner at the table. It's delicious. Service was so fast and attentive. This has easily become my favorite restaurant in ATX. Everything about La Piscina is perfect: the ambience (Austin Proper Hotel in general is awesome), the friendly + helpful staff, and the FOOD! Our first time was mainly focused around raw fish + seafood which I definitely recommend. The aguachile is an explosion of different flavors and textures (has cute mini tortilla chips) and the big-eye tuna melts in your mouth. For the main course, the filet was great but the gulf (aka jumbo) shrimp stole the show. When you order any fajita dish, they also bring out fresh guac, pico, tortillas, and rice+beans. We came for my girlfriend's birthday so they comped the churros which again...just AMAZING. We have a reservation to go back in a month so will check back in after trying more of the menu! read more

Fajitas can with sides - the rice was a little bland but that's rice for you. An order of the no 1 fajitas comfortably fed 2 ppl. The tortillas seemed homemade and came out hot. This was once a really fun place to go meet clients for snacks and happy hour. I just called to inquire about reserving a spot for 10 of my clients and curtly was told by the entitled and unfriendly young lady at the hostess stand that I would be required to do a pris fixe menu either $75 or $100 per person. When I told her we just wanted to come for snacks and happy hour she scoffed, "We Don't DO happy hour" Cool. You just assured that I won't EVER return to your establishment again. Was able to get a same-day dinner reservation on a Wednesday. The service was great and we really enjoyed the vibe! From the furniture to the natural lighting, you can tell this restaurant was designed with intention and care. And most importantly, the food and drinks were amazing! They start you off with free chips and salsa (we loved the green one!), and we ordered margaritas de la casa. I liked that there was the option for frozen/blended, which is my preference. We got the Baja oysters that come with yummy sauce which we asked for on the side (normally it comes on top of the oysters). We also got the steak arrachera al carbon fajitas and added two bacon-wrapped gulf shrimp -- this dish was so delicious and our favorite part of the meal! The steak was cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. The cheese was also so good! This dish comes with rice, beans, and tortillas, so it was super filling (we had leftovers!). I've been to La Piscina at least 20 times. I love the food and I've experienced good customer service. Tonight, after receiving the bill, my friend noticed that we were charged $24 for ordering a tajin rim on our margaritas - $2 per drink for the tajin. We were not told about the up charge when we ordered. It is atypical in Austin to be charged for salt and/or tajin rim on a drink. This seems ridiculous given the $18 base price of the margarita! Please tell your customer about this crazy up charge when they order. read more

La Piscina is all vibes, great music, and incredible people. Justin and Ally made it our best afternoon in Austin, bar none. It's the perfect spot to chill, drink, and have delicious food by the pool. The gulf shrimp ceviche was so great we had to get it twice, and the guac was the perfect chilling snack. Justin's aperol spritz's gave me the perfect buzz, and we're incredibly balanced. We had big plans to go see all of Austin, but found ourselves relaxing and exhaling here, detoxing for a rare weekend without the kiddos. On a (long) side note, we felt so bad for our new friends in the burlap sacks the hotel makes them wear. This unbreathable fabric in 100+ degree weather in the summer is a bit tone deaf and not understanding the Texas climate. No one can pull off that tan color. No one. Downstairs the front desk folks look like they are in an Obi Wan Kenobi cult in their sandstorm beige. Proper execs listen up- culturally appropriate outfits (and maybe loose guidelines but why uniforms?) Allow your amazing staff something breathable and stretchy in a flattering color. Hit and miss dinner at La Piscina. Let our experience help guide you. Skip the guacamole and queso fundido appetizers. The queso was separated and just not good. The guac needed spices (salt) and the curtido vegetables were too vinegar flavored. Needed more oil and water and less vinegar when cooking the vegetables. Also, the fajitas (you need to get fajitas) comes with a proper queso fundido (a good creamy version) AND guac on the side anyway so no need to order those appetizers. The chips and salsa (brought free to table) were very good. The tuna crudo was a hit but a small 5 bites for $21. The beef (no 1 on the menu) were excellent, flavorful, juicy, tender. The chicken (no 4 on menu) was very good also. The rice and bean accompaniment to the fajitas was okay but could use more salt and rice cooked in a chicken broth instead of water. The flour tortillas for queso and fajitas were just okay. They were kind of stiff and lacking flavor (need some lard perhaps). After a few minutes they get very stiff. We also ordered the snapper tacos which were good but the tortillas didn't hold up and broke apart which is not good. These 2 fajita items were enough for 3 to 4 people easily. The waitstaff uniforms are cabo beach vibes but in a high rise hotel are more papillon prison vibes. Nick, our waiter, was awesome. Very helpful, friendly, fun. We did have a cilantro issue though. We asked for all cilantro garnish to be eliminated from our food (after seeing other yelp photos) but only a bonus mistake guac had it removed. The pictures show everything else covered with it. The total bill with no drinks before tip was $32 pp so very manageable. So skip the duplicate apps and add another fajita dish would be the right move. Fajitas are 5 star but unfortunatley too many other things just not good enough for an upscale place in Austin for this native Texan!! read more

I was at La Piscina for dinner on Christmas Eve recently, at the suggestion of my son while visiting Austin. It turned out to be an amazing experience and I had the best Mexican food I've ever had. I tried an array of different dishes and all the food was outstanding and fresh:) The chicken and beef fajitas were tender and juicy, the beet, feta and pomegranate salad was incredible, each salsa was distinctly unique, and the homemade tortillas were excellent. I also had the Tres Leche cake for dessert which was moist and paired well with the accompanying fresh fruit. The staff was amazing, especially the night manager Fedor, who made sure I was comfortable and had everything that I needed:) I highly recommend La Piscina at the Austin Proper if you want authentic Mexican food in a 5 star hotel:) read more

One of my favorite meals ever! The photos don't really illustrate the small, upscale hotel restaurant with dimly lit, moody vibes. So, when I rolled in to start off my bachelorette with an obnoxious veil, you could almost hear a record scratch if only the music was quieter, LOL. The staff were extremely welcoming and welcomed our silly energy. We started off with delicious drinks, I ordered the watermelon margarita with added Serrano flavor- so yummy! For two people we ordered shrimp ceviche (agua Chile) and the no.1 10 oz prime steak arrachera al carbon fajitas. Let me tell you... this isn't your average sizzling fajita plate. They place the plate on top of this table top stove thing so it stays sizzling lol. The steak was tender and flavorful. Oh and there's also a pool of cheese served alongside your protein of choice.
