I have always been a fan of La Playa. I thought they had the best seafood in town. And my last two trips have been a disappointment. I think they must've changed owners because the shrimp isn't up to the same quality that it used to be the fried fish is still very good but the Mexican cocktailwas not the same high-quality as before. Seafood and more served hot and fresh. Unlike other restaurants the shrimp cocktail is served with fresh shrimp not frozen. It was great. I also ordered the fried shrimp plate which comes with fries. Not the best but not the worst seafood in San Antonio but that is not the reason for the two star review. The one thing this place lacks is customer service. The waitstaff is friendly when they come to your table eventually. The wait was long to be acknowledged when you enter. No refills on drinks because staff will forget you're there. My husband ordered a fish and shrimp place with fries but plate came with rice instead. When they drop off your food the bill is automatically placed on your table which makes you feel rushed out. I have not been here in a while but wanted to see if anything new. It was pretty much the same. Place is not to big but way to noisy between the people who are present and the little trio musicians it just echos throughout the restaurant. We were seated and brought menus, after we received our drink order she took our lunch order and brought our chips and salsa. It was pretty quick considering it was packed. We order a plate and decided to divide it between both of us. The food was delicious and their stuffed crab was so good with chunks of crab in it not like other businesses I have been too. Only issue we had was the waitress never came back to our table after we were served. So never received refills on our drinks and we had a shrimp cocktail that we didn't touch so needed a to go container and we had to flag someone down to get it for us. Price was very reasonable. Took my buddy here for the first time. We had it all. Soup, popusas, seafood. The soup had maggots in it, several. We told the lady and she said no, that is cilantro... Look, we know guisano when we see it. We saw them still serving the soup but stirring it around too check for more maggots. The food is great quality on a good day and most filling but the price for 2 plates is at least $25 after taxes and depending how fast you get full it may not be worth the money. the amount of food isnt justified by its price. also it helps to know some spanish even if you arent a natural because they pride themselves in speaking mostly spanish. this location is great to come to once in a while but dont make a habit out of it because it will leave your pockets empty and the only thing they love is your money. they only see you as a cash cow. all they want is your money. it would be a lot easier if you just mailed them your paycheck directly so they could spend your money more easily. some of these waitresses are sluts. If going to La Playa was about service, I would not go. The wait staff at this place was pretty indifferent to my existence. Not a lot of drink refills and no friendly service. However, I did find the food to be good. I love that you get chips and salsa, as other restaurants charge now. The chips are crispy and a little thicker. Boyfriend and I ordered a family order of fried fish. Holy cow, it was A LOT of fish. The fish was delicious. The fries were not. Pro tip here: if you are going for a Saturday dinner, you better get there early. We were on a weird eating schedule and showed up around 3:30 p.m. By the time we left at 5 p.m., there was a line of people waiting. A friend and I went here the other day for lunch. He's not from here but wanted to try Mexican seafood and had heard about La Playa from somewhere. I thought it was just ok. I ordered fish tacos. Look, I'm not too picky when it comes to my food, and you can't really do fish tacos badly, but they're definitely not La Playa's specialty. The fish came fried, wrapped in a corn tortilla, covered in lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. It was missing a key ingredient: SAUCE. As a result, the dish was really dry and under seasoned. They needed like a chipotle mayo or something to bring the dish together. As a result, I just smothered the fish in hot sauce and left the fixings on the plate. It's not that the food was bad, it's more that someone should have thought holistically about the dish they served. It came with some mediocre rice and beans. We came during lunch and it was a little busy but not too bad. Our server was frequently absent but not to the point where it was bad, though I didn't get a refill on my water. I'll chalk it up to a bad, busy day for her. One of very few places in San Antonio to get Salvadorean food. They knock it out pretty good too. But orders of things like papusas do take a while since they are made to order. Their seafood is also on point. Consistent everytime we've gone. Price is real good and the portions are well worthy of being called San Antonio sized plates. It's in a bit of a barrio type area, their neighborhood vendors that usually pop in to slang goods and of course there mariachi and picture guys doing the rounds. It's a decent restaurant to dine in if your on that side of town. They have delicious carne gusida and enchiladas. The atmosphere and comfortable. It's a great place for large groups and families. If you like a whole fish and tasty then go this place. The people work there are very nice. Its not a high end restaurant. But, the food taste better then a high end mexican restaurant. I gave this place 4 stars, but only because this was my first time eating here. Right off the bat I was impressed with their service. The waitress was very polite and was hustling, which is nice to see vs. other places that like to drag their feet. The place was very clean and while it is a seafood restaurant, it did not have that fishy smell (fresh seafood should not smell fishy...a paradox i know). I ordered the Filete Veracruzeno with their rice and...WOW!!! It tasted so good, fresh, and the best part...it has 3 filets. I had to try one of their papusas and I'm so glad that I did...it was amazing...and so was the coleslaw that came with it...it was awesome...i could have a plate of that by itself. Their sweet plantains...I thought perhaps Jesus had made it because it was simply...Heaven. It comes with a side of refried beans and Crema Salvadorena and it is to die for...heck...it is to KILL for. We had a lot of food and the best part...it was so inexpensive...but it tasted high dollar.
