La Plaza is a cool place. They offer good Mexican food like sandwiches, soups, burritos. Their meat choices are all delicious. Personally I love the torta or burrito. They also have a ton of beverage options (think mini 7-11). They have a huge assortment of pan dulce (Mexican bread). All of the choices are yummy. They have various cake slices, croissants, rolls, jelly, custard, sprinkles, cookies, donuts, jello, etc etc etc. Anything to suit your mood. Prices are great. Worth the stop if you're driving by. read more

We bought bread and got some type of croissant, but it wasn't even baked all the way. You can see the dough. A kid was eating this too. I'll think twice next time when i come to this place. We wanted to eat bread, and not play with the dough. Disappointed. read more

I've been going here off and on for the past few years. Their pastries and other sweets are pretty good. The Mexican food they have is just ok. The little shop around the corner from here has much better food than this one does. The worst thing was an experience just the other day. We wanted to buy a cake, no decorations, just a cake. It was about 7:45pm when we called the bakery to ask if they had any cakes available. They did. We asked what time they close, and they said 8:30pm. We got ready and arrived at about 8:15pm. This was plenty of time before the store supposedly closed for us to arrive and purchase the cake we wanted, right? Wrong! The doors were locked! We checked to be sure we'd gotten the hours right, and sure enough, in big white letters and numbers on their door, closing time is 8:30pm, every single night of the week. Yet the doors were locked. An older "lady" opened the patio door and asked if we had called in. She said she'd only sell to us if we had cash, that their system had already been closed out for the night. Why did they close early? They don't want to be there past 8pm. Seriously, if you say you're open until 8:30, those doors better be open until 8:30pm. They don't get locked at 7:50, 8:01, 8:13, 8:20, or even 8:29! 8:30!! You will miss out on business and you will be called out on every social media outlet known to man. Hence this post. I don't care if your employees don't want to be there past 8. Your hours are posted and that's how long you need to be open, barring emergencies. Needless to say, I don't think we'll attempt to get a cake here again. We'll go to Costco next time we're in Salinas. They stay open until their posted time of closing and we know they're consistently good cakes. read more

On our way down to Soledad, we happened to stop by this spot for lunch and did not regret it. It's a well stocked bakery with a fantastic selection, but also had a great lunch section for tacos and burritos. Service was friendly and efficient. It has some of the best pastries I've ever eaten in my life! My favorite pastries would have to be the almond croissant and the pineapple glazed cream cheese pastry. This isn't the same La Plaza from when I was a kid. Prices continue to go up, and food quality goes down. Staff is always friendly, bread is fresh. Prices and quality are the main concerns and attention to detail when making orders for customers. I'd give it a 5 star rating, but it's not close to it anymore. read more

I was there a few weeks ago an d bought a torta with my sister. And she said why are the skimping our on the carnitas. Sure enough I look and it's small sliver of carnitas. Then two weeks ago I go the plaza by Kmart in Salinas and was given a way better torta with a good amount of carnitas . I will not be buying anymore tortas in their Soledad location. My friend who lives in Soledad now, likes to come here with her family. They order cakes from this bakery. What I didn't know, is they have a taquria counter? You can order lunch and pick up some dessert. Yes!!!! Prices are a little on the high side, especially for a town where there aren't a lot of jobs around. I know they can get in the people passing through to the Pinnacles. But...also the people should enjoy the deliciousness of eating sugar. Viva azucar read more

Whilst on an eating binge, my husband and I stopped by here after seeing the glowing light of the outside doors. We walked in and my eyes grew three times larger when I saw the bakery display. I was sad that I was on a diet because I wanted to buy one of everything, but had to settle for a pink cake. My husband got a torta and it was very good. Fresh everything with plenty of carne. When I came home, my baby was crying so I gave him some of the pink cake, and I'll tell you, it was good enough to make him stop crying. That should say enough about how good this place is! My family has been coming here for years and years. Service changes often because employees do as well. There used to be a rude girl that had colored hair...she's gone. That's a plus! There are many new employees now that seem to be more attentive and without the attitude. Same great bread and food as well! Will keep coming back here...so will my kids. read more

You can never go wrong if you come here to eat. Since I've been away, they have added a full on menu. They have posole and other Mexican dishes. Menudo is only on the weekends. The other cool thing they added for all of you health freaks is a juices. Yes they juice! Never asked them whether or not the fruits were organic. I doubt it though. As far as pastries go, they have so much to choose from. If you have a sweet tooth, look no further because they will fulfill your sweet tooth fantasy. I've been hearing about this spot forever from my sister in law and my husband. Anytime they talk about going back to Cali they talk about the best tortas in the world. Well we were up there for a week and probably ate here at least 5 times during that week lol. I didn't have the tortas, but their green chile tamales are AMAZING. So amazing that on our last day there I called in and order 2 dozen to take back home. Their breads and pastries are so fresh and soft. They have this one that looks like a big giant croissant but tastes more like French bread. Seriously, bread doesn't get any fresher than here. I planned on trying more than just tamales, but they were so good I just kept ordering them. La Plaza is a local chain bakery with locations in Greenfield, Soledad, Gonzales, and Salinas. I have only been to the Soledad, and Gonzales locations. The pastries are very inexpensive and delicious. Coffee is usually hot and strong. I enjoy their almond croissants they are crisp and delicious- although not as authentic as the French bakeries on the peninsula. However, you have to take into account the are half the price as well. If you love authentic Mexican treats this is your place.... If you're looking for a burrito this isn't the best place. I do see long lines for their Tortas so they must be quite yummy. They do not use lard in their frijoles for all my fellow vegetarians out there. La Plaza is clean, cute, and has a huge selection. The only area they lack is service with a smile. (: read more

I stopped here on the way up 101 for a break from driving, and it was well worth the stop. I ordered an al pastor burrito with avocado in it, and a separate corn tortilla on the side (because they make their own). The total was $5.12, and it was a filling, incredibly tasty lunch--maybe the best al pastor I've had. Great place to stop during a long drive! read more

Since I'm from the Bay Area this place feels like it's in the middle of nowhere. But, thanks to Yelp we found this place to appease our appetite after visiting the nearby historical Mission Soledad. What can I say...we ordered the Carnitas Torta, the Chicharon Taco, a Cheese and a Pork Tamale, and a plain Cheese Quesadilla and were just impressed at how good everything tasted..finger lickin good...but it doesn't stop there. Take a little stroll over to the bakery side and the not so sweet treats will just knock your socks off. They were so good we had to order more to take home. If you are ever passing through Salinas/Soledad..definitely give this place a try. read more

Fantastic! I had car trouble driving south from the Bay Area and ended up at this hidden gem while I awaited my car repair. They had a huge selection of sweet and savory baked goods and a full Mexican lunch menu (including breakfast burritos). Everything was fresh, service was very friendly and this find definitely brightened my day. The bakery is a revelation unto itself. We bought a whole box with a little of everything: The traditional pan dulces, a custard-filled danish that was recommended (oh boy was that good), almond croissants, bread pudding, and more. I wanted to bring home one of the little frosted "white dog" cakes for my mom (her dog looks like one of them), but refrained. The last time I was here six months ago, I ate a pineapple turnover that was delicious, too. The hot-food corner is great, too. I ate the special this time, a pork and red chile tamale with rice and beans, and it was good (although not very spicy). My husband had a great al pastor burrito, and my son ate a quesadilla. Judging from the other reviews, however, the tortas on fresh rolls are the way to go, so I'll make sure I'm hungry for a milanesa (thin fried meat) the next time we go through, which will be in two weeks - I'll update then. :) The first time we were here, it appeared to be the de facto cafeteria for the prison, as guards and other uniformed enforcement officers came through in a steady stream. When we read about this place on Yelp it sounded interesting, and that is the kind of place we like to try when we are traveling. This is the first place I have been to where everything is written in Spanish, but the people are friendly and helpful. Food is ordered deli style (at the counter). You can eat at the tables provided, or take out. We chose to eat in. The place is clean, bright and cheery. The food was very good, and very reasonable priced. And it is a bakery with delicious looking/smelling treats - I wanted one of everything. We ended up buying several things to take for dessert later. I highly recommend this place. So this bakery has been a family favorite of ours for 20 years now. The bakery has always been considered the half way point whenever we head north and whenever any family makes a trip it is not unusual that we'll get a text from them saying they are at the bakery and what would we like. So why has this become a must stop? Quite possibly the best baked goods periods. They are large, rich and affordable. Even their american treats like donuts, rolls, etc are out of this world delicious. You never feel skimped on with the bakery. The only reason I cannot give this a perfect score. I have been dissapointed in the service the last few times I've gone. Half the time the employees can seem to be aimlessly moving behind the counter without addressing me and it can be frustrating. The almond croissant was probably the best item we tried, the other bakery items were okay but the cookies we tried were rather flavorless. Tacos: The tortillas were good but the meat, ugh, the meat was terribly overcooked & chewy - really just tasted like salt & pepper. Tamales: decided to come back the next day & try different items. The tamales were clearly homemade but the batch we bought were super dry, had hardly any flavor & contained very little pork. Um, not sure if this is the norm for this area (it was very crowded with locals both days) & the bakery side employees were very nice, but in SoCal we have AMAZING tacos & Mexican food options overall & this place would probably never survive. read more

Expecting my Saturday morning pre-order would be ready for pick up since I ordered it early of course when I get there they haven't even made my order!!
