After my experiences with different small animal vet clinics in Santa Rosa, I was skeptical to say the least about getting another vet in this area. I took a chance on LaPlaza and I was SO GLAD I DID!! The store front dressings may not be elegant but the team that works on the inside is the BEST! My Anatolian puppy has been a challenge that they met, and I mean THEY, ALL OF THE STAFF, with grace and kindness. So today I went to get my dog checked on and a vaccine. I was early on the vaccine and they told me after it was administered that it would not be included in the care plan because it was early. I got them to drop the charge and canceled my care plan. Then I get a call later saying that because my services did not equal the amount I payed in the care plan I owed them more money. They said the care plan is essentially just a payment plan for a set of services. This is NOT what was presented to me and essentially just means that they will make as much money as they can off you. Because if you don't reach the amount the of services equal to the care plan it's not like they refund you the difference! I find this manipulative and gross and not transparent at all! I really liked the staff which makes this suck even more but I wouldn't sign up for the care plan if I were you, it literally can't save you money the way they set it up it's just a financed way to pay for services and will likely make them more money than the services you get. I think this is taking advantage of clients! read more

The new doctors are great! We thought Jaxx had a simple eye infection and should be treated with a medication, so we took him in to be looked at. The doctor did such a thorough exam that he discovered Jaxx had a cut on his eyeball. Using special techniques and tests, he was able to give us an exact diagnosis with an explanation that we actually understood. The prices are a bit more than when Dr. Reif was there, but I will say it's definitely worth it. The previous staff were not a happy or friendly group of people, but I must say that the current staff is much happier and more friendly, and it definitely makes for a very pleasant visit. My kids (Rottweilers) can be a little intimidating and not exactly charming (yes, we muzzle them), but everyone including my husband and I work together with the staff to make the exams go smoothly without further traumatizing my kids and keeping everyone happy. Prices were fair and our vet was great with our dog. She didn't push extra procedures or testing on us and was very honest and open.

Went back for our 2 week check up and brought our new kittens in for shots and a well check. Saw Dr. Lester this time, she was just as kind as I expected. Gave me some advice on feeding kittens away from the older cats so they got their kitten food and rather than pushing tests (I mention because others have mentioned that) we decided to just give a deworming/parasite medication. I miss Dr Reif as much as the next patient does, I really do. I have to say the new Vets we have seen and office staff are really kind/friendly and I've felt listened to with zero pressure for testing or medications/fancy food. I have a pair of older cats who should come in for a check up and I won't hesitate to bring them. I really hope people aren't leaving low reviews just because they can't handle change. read more

I was looking for a new Veterinary clinic for my two Shichon dogs. After reading the reviews on La Plaza Veterinary Clinic's new Veterinarian and their reasonable pricing, I gave them a try. We recently added a 6 month old female Shichon to our family and she needed a check- up and shots. Crystal, the front desk representative, answered all my questions with patience and was able to book our Bella right away. Email/text reminders was helpful. Walking in for Bella's appointment was welcoming. Bella was nervous and unsure of other dogs in the waiting room so she was growling and barking, somewhat surprising and a little embarrassing but the staff led us to our room, away from distraction, so glad this was done. I was pleased with the way Veterinarian, Nate Fichtenberg and his assistant, handled Bella and took his time answering my questions and adding helpful information, his assistant was also tentative and sweet to Bella's needs. My experience with La Plaza was very positive and I was also pleased with the cost. I will be switching my other Shichon from Animal Hospital of Sebastopol to La Plaza. Nothing major wrong with AHS just the cost and a better feeling. read more

I had an appointment for my dog who is a 15 year old Chihuahua and is very sick. He's been a patient here for many years with the prior doctor. The new doctor wasn't being very caring nor the staff, with the exception of one very nice medical assistant. I asked the doctor how long she's been practicing and she told me to leave with my sick dog. I've never experienced this with the prior doctor or anywhere else. I had to take my dog to rhonert park veterinary hospital which was great. Don't go to laplaza vet, they are no longer the caring place it was before my dogs Dr retired. Sad. The day Dr.Reiff retired I knew I was screwed. I went today with my cat with a pretty obvious UTI but I couldn't get even a broad spectrum antibiotic because they need to know which bacteria exactly is they did not offer any pain relief. Vet tech acting like she knows everything, the vet telling me that my cat is peeing around the house maybe to a behavioral issue... I have had cats for almost 40 years, I know my cats. Last year I paid $100 for Dr. Reiff to help my cat. Today I have paid $200 and my cat is pain in home... because they don't want to make it worse for a poor 17 year old cat who may create a new resistant bacteria if we don't give her the exact antibiotic. Oh... they don't let you use Chewy. I paid almost $20 for 20 pills of medication. I pay $32 for 120 in Chewy... don't walk, run away read more

We went to Dr. Reif over 30 years like many reviewers here, and loved him! Dr. Nate took over practice and he is in the process of updating/remodeling the practice so I expected modest price increases. After visiting with my 3-yr old cat in January, I felt comfortable with both Dr. Nate and the staff. One lady was a carryover from Dr. Reif. Dr. Reif kept prices low, and Dr. Nate is upgrading/modernizing things so expect some increases. He's still lower than most Vets in our area. Most impressive was the service they gave us when my cousin was visiting from out-of-state when her dog got foxtails imbedded in one paw. The receptionist was able to get us in on THE SAME DAY. Dr. Nate performed surgery on the paw and removed 12 foxtails. Our cousin was so impressed and thankful with the excellent and kind service. Life is change, so give Dr. Nate and his staff a chance. The La Plaza vet team has taken care of my furry children (2 dogs and 2 cats) over the last three years. My kitten received their first vaccine free (part of the Rohnert Park animal shelter deal). My furry kids have been in for various reasons, including teeth extractions, infections, bladder infection and one sorrowful parting. They don't upsell me on things we don't need. Dr Reif gets the job done and is straight forward, and charges appropriately, which is refreshing! I only wish they had after hours care :) I am satisfied with them and will remain a customer as long as I have furry companions. read more

I brought my very scared and extremely strong, formally feral cat, Smokey, in today for a check-up and micro chipping. Katelyn (sp?) and Dr. Stone handled my Smokey firmly -yet with total respect. If it was possible to post -20 stars i would do it ! They were only supposed to remove 6 teeth from this poor dog , and under anesthesia 1 1/2 maybe 2 hours ! It ended up 4 hours under anesthesia and removed 24 teeth without notifying the owner ! No phone call , no notification except when it was already done ! And then add on extra fees ? WTH. ! The 2 assistants that did it should be fired and any fees paid should be refunded ! You screwed up big time. Some of us love our animals like kids. This is heartbreaking to the dog and the owner ! If more needed to be removed owner should have been notified immediately so he had a choice in the matter. Not just do it ! The poor dog is so miserable right now. Had to drive to my old vet 95 miles roundtrip to get some help. Had a bit*ch of a time with Crystal on the phone to reschedule the appointment because I took care of meds for the month. Chastised me and when I asked for her to send my records she said my records belonged to the business. I have not even stepped foot in the place and don't plan too. I have been to many vets in the area and I keep going back to Dr. Reif. I live on the north end of Santa Rosa so driving to Cotati is not ideal when there are so many other vets closer to where I live. And trust me, I have been to a lot to try to find the right fit. A little history about me and my dog. Like many others, my dog is my baby. I would do anything for her. I am 29 and my dog is 11 years old so I have had her since I was 18 years old. She is still in great shape. I feed her top quality dog food and run her every other day. My dog has only had two semi serious things go wrong with her health. One was a scrape on her eye. Which I started at another vet but all they wanted to do was put her on medication. I started to become nervous when I did not see any improvement in a weeks time. Its hard to see your baby in pain. Thats when I made an appointment with Dr. Reif. He got Nala in fast and diagnosed her even faster. He said she had probably scratched her eye when trying to scratch her ear at some point. He got right to work with a scalpel and removed the dead skin. My baby was healed and looking great THE VERY NEXT DAY. The second semi serious health issue was just recently. Nala had a huge mass looking thing on her left cheek. This thing was no joke, the size of a tennis ball. This developed over a time period of two months. At the beginning I brought her to a vet in Windsor. They had me pay $400 for this test to see if she had this Muscle disorder. Test came back negative. $400 down the drain. They then said that it still could be that disorder but I was tired of wasting money and time. The size of the mass seemed to be getting larger. I was losing sleep at night worried sick about my dog. The next morning I called Dr. Reif and begged for him to see her. He did. Just like the time before, he diagnosed her instantly. Turned out to be a nasty infection which caused a huge abscess on the side of her cheek. He told me to bring in her tomorrow and he would perform the surgery. That was two weeks ago and my baby just got her stitches out yesterday and is doing great! I paid less in three appointments with Dr. Reif than I did with that one appointment in Windsor. This place may not be the nicest to look at, They may not have the nicest staff working the front, but this Doctor knows what he is doing. If you love your animal and want them to get better. Trust doctor Reif. He know's what he is doing and I am so grateful to him. read more

A few days ago, we took our cat to the vet for her shots & check-up. Dr. Nathaniel Fichentenberg is the new vet and he goes by Dr. Nate. The place has been improved and modernized. Upgrades are ongoing. Our cat had no problem with Dr Nate's bedside manner. He was very gentle, kind, and thorough with the examination. The staff was nice and thoughtful. I miss Dr Reif. He treated our pets like they were his own children. We went to him for over 20 years. The new owners have no record of any of our pets in their system. They won't approve online prescriptions which we have had ongoing for over a decade. I had my dog there three weeks ago and now want me to bring my dog back in to have a checkup before the prescription can be approved. Ah yes...as for the visit a few weeks ago what a complete waste of time and money. The new vet quoted us a certain cost for two procedures on our pet when we were there for the examination and when I called back two weeks later to schedule for the surgery she did not honor that price and wanted much more money. She claimed that the cost which she originally quoted was actually the starting cost, which was not true, because I specifically remember her original quote. She clearly said to us that by doing the two procedures at the same time it would save us money and the reason for the price quoted. Boyfriend called only to see as they don't even have record of them being there!? How does that even happen after noting they dont have a computer. I can't believe this is my first time reviewing Dr Reif. I have been coming here for 24 years. I started coming here right before I had my first child. She's going to be 24 this week. About 20 years ago I recruited my parents to start coming here. I was working for Analy vet hospital at the time. And it was still a third of the price to come here even after my employee discount. I remember fighting with my mom about how reasonable his prices were here. She made the assumption I was exaggerating. Ha!! I was right. All though, I could never tell her that to her face. Right now I have four dogs. Bootie 11....Khloe 9....Junior 4 and Shug 2. (Yes I have a pug named after the prostitute on Hustle and Flow). Obviously Shug was named by my older daughter. Dr. Reif Has been the vet for all of them since day one. My parents consistently have two dogs. They had to put their German Shepherd Sky down last year. Her hips had gotten really bad. My mom and I took her in, Dr Reif put her to sleep. My parents had her cremated. She was put into a beautiful box with her name on it. It was a beautiful conclusion to a sad experience. OK...personal stories over. Here is what you REALLY NEED TO KNOW..... *** I'm not fond of the office staff. The staff they had in the 90s, so much more friendly. They all knew my name. I eat that up. These ladies are matter of fact & all business. Although one of them has his cute little tiny dog, a Pom I think. That lady was pretty nice. She let my crazy little three-year-old hold her dog. *** At first glance, The building is really old and run down. But let's be realistic he's been there for decades, Literally...I don't care if you have the best housekeeper in town, that shit is not going to stay new! *** You know.... the bottom line really is that you're not going to find a better veterinarian within this state. Period. Not only is he just a nice freaking guy. He's absolutely fabulous with the animals & you can NOT get a better deal for the $$$$$ *** I don't care if you think your current Vet craps GOLD bars.
