Dad and Hali on their walk with Bella in the background watching! :)

After my experiences with different small animal vet clinics in Santa Rosa, I was skeptical to say the least about getting another vet in this area. I took a chance on LaPlaza and I was SO GLAD I DID!! The store front dressings may not be elegant but the team that works on the inside is the BEST! My Anatolian puppy has been a challenge that they met, and I mean THEY, ALL OF THE STAFF, with grace and kindness. Like unruly kids, unruly puppies can be a pain but the whole staff acted as if they were well trained kindergarten teachers!! Lol. EXCELLENCE is the word I would use. Never judge a book by its cover has a whole new meaning and a reminder that Quality is far better than Quantity. Thank you to LaPlaza Veterinary staff, Techs, Front Desk, and the brilliant Doctors themselves. Halime, Miss Kitty, Rascal and Sissy (if I can ever catch her!), and I am very grateful to you all.

The new doctors are thorough & the staff is much happier & that makes for a great visit.

The new doctors are great! We thought Jaxx had a simple eye infection and should be treated with a medication, so we took him in to be looked at. The doctor did such a thorough exam that he discovered Jaxx had a cut on his eyeball. Using special techniques and tests, he was able to give us an exact diagnosis with an explanation that we actually understood. The prices are a bit more than when Dr. Reif was there, but I will say it's definitely worth it. The previous staff were not a happy or friendly group of people, but I must say that the current staff is much happier and more friendly, and it definitely makes for a very pleasant visit. My kids (Rottweilers) can be a little intimidating and not exactly charming (yes, we muzzle them), but everyone including my husband and I work together with the staff to make the exams go smoothly without further traumatizing my kids and keeping everyone happy. Jaxx and Moe are everything to us. Therefore, we will continue our many years of veterinary needs with LaPlaza! THANK YOU TO THE NEW AND IMPROVED LaPLAZA VET CLINIC! Hugs & Licks from Jaxx & Moe And their parents Tim & Karen.

    Kitten check!
    Christina M.

Went back for our 2 week check up and brought our new kittens in for shots and a well check. Saw Dr. Lester this time, she was just as kind as I expected. Gave me some advice on feeding kittens away from the older cats so they got their kitten food and rather than pushing tests (I mention because others have mentioned that) we decided to just give a deworming/parasite medication. I miss Dr Reif as much as the next patient does, I really do. I have to say the new Vets we have seen and office staff are really kind/friendly and I've felt listened to with zero pressure for testing or medications/fancy food. I have a pair of older cats who should come in for a check up and I won't hesitate to bring them. I really hope people aren't leaving low reviews just because they can't handle change.

We brought Taz in after he was bitten by a dog, and as stressful as the situation was, the team immediately made us feel like he was in the best hands. Bengals can be intimidating if you've never worked with one before. Taz has a very loud growl, and his meow sounds like he's ready to attack, but he's actually a sweetheart. Because of that, I'm always a little nervous about how people will react to him. Jacob was absolutely amazing. He worked seamlessly alongside the veterinarian, and together they made an incredible team. I was especially impressed with how calm, patient, and confident he was while helping treat Taz's injuries. When it came time to clip and clean the area around the dog bite, Jacob worked with me to keep Taz calm, and together we were actually able to get everything done without having to sedate him. That was huge for us because Taz has always had a very difficult reaction to sedation. Jacob's gentle handling and compassionate approach made all the difference. From the moment we arrived until we left, Jacob was attentive, kind, and genuinely invested in Taz's well-being. He made sure we had everything we needed, checked in on us throughout the visit, and gave Taz plenty of extra pets and reassurance. The thing that impressed me the most is that after roughly ten visits over the years, Jacob is the first person Taz has ever truly liked. If you've ever owned a Bengal, you know that's saying something! Thank you to the entire team at VCA Animal Care Center, and especially to Jacob, for turning an incredibly stressful emergency into such a positive experience. Your compassion, professionalism, and dedication to both pets and their owners do not go unnoticed. Jacob is an incredible asset to your hospital, and we are so grateful for the care he gave Taz.

Rather than addressing my concerns or attempting to discuss the situation, Dr. Karanveer Mann sent his technician to inform me that "he's not comfortable seeing me." This response is disappointing on multiple levels. First, refusing service to a client for leaving a fair review raises serious questions about how feedback is handled at this practice. Second, the lack of direct communication shows poor customer service and unprofessional conflict resolution. I also believes this demonstrates his character over all. If my previous review contained inaccuracies, I would have welcomed a conversation to address them. I would have even removed the review as part as an agreed resolution. Instead, I was dismissed without any attempt at dialogue. This experience has only reinforced my original concerns about the practice's approach to client relationships. On a personal level - look Dr. Mann, you need to humble yourself and although I might not look like it, I'm sure I earn more money than you as an engineer of 15+ years without the doctorate degree and your attitude that comes along with it. As long-time VCA customers, it is maddening to call for an appointment, only to hear that they are booked out for the entire month ahead. There are also no doctors working in the office today, which happens to be a weekday where one would expect at LEAST one doctor to be on duty. Our need today was to get a refill for a prescription steroid medicine for a cat that was seen for that issue in the past. This would normally be an easy thing to work around within a few days, even without an appointment, but the prior doctor had put instructions that this 11 year old cat, who has had these allergies his entire life, needed to be seen again in office prior to any refills being given. On top of being booked out for an entire month, and not being able to provide even a prescription for a short course until the cat can be seen, this particular veterinarian has left the practice. As mentioned previously, this is not a reflection on the hard-working local staff, but on VCA Corporate as a whole. VCA North Park, I have been told by the front desk, is short on veterinarians, so there are AT LEAST TWO DAYS A WEEK when there are no veterinarians on duty. VCA is a big enough corporation with many locations that they should be able to staff properly, even if they have to assign a doctor from another office. I do not see how VCA North Park can stay in business running things this way. On a positive note, VCA North Park was able to squeeze us in for an appointment two weeks ago (different cat who had been vomiting). Dr. Powers examined our cat, Samson, and recommended a special diet, which we have put him on and has been effective. Dr. Powers even provided an e-mail that she can check when she works (on Tuesdays), for status updates on Samson. Another VCA veterinarian, Dr. Leavey (who we have seen for years), provided a written prescription for the special when we ran out of what we purchased there. Veterinarians don't choose their vocations for reasons other than that they want to help animals. But it is ridiculous from a business standpoint to make customers wait a month because the corporation cannot keep the business staffed. From a pet standpoint, having to wait a month just to get a prescription -- or go to the busy (and expensive)?VCA Animal Care Center/Emergency Vet, as was suggested by VCA North Park, seems like incredibly bad service. I hope that VCA Corporate can run some numbers and see how many dollars they are losing doing business this way, and make staffing vets a priority. Meanwhile, our cat with the skin allergy suffers.

It cost me $564 to have them do two exams on my two cats, one set of shots, and flea medication. This is much higher than any vet I've used in the area. On top of that, this bill is after fending off constant upselling on the part of the vet. She couldn't tell me what was wrong with my elderly cat because, despite a $90+ exam, she needed to do a full panel of blood work to even guess why the cat is acting a little low-energy (he's 17 years old). Despite being unable to diagnose anything with my cat, she suggested I get him a monthly shot that "some people" feel helps elderly animals with arthritis. When she told me that, I watched her write $170 on my chart, as if she was calculating how much money she could get from these shots every month. Also, she said she couldn't tell for sure if the cat has arthritis or not. Likewise, when she learned my younger cat's vaccines were out of date, she told me she would have to start the whole thing over and that I would have to take the cat in AGAIN in 6 weeks for boosters. When I pushed back on this, she dropped it and gave the cat his shots. This isn't the first time she has done this. When my cat had an abscess in the past, she used it as an excuse to send me home with bags of medications, bandages, a cat collar... all for a fairly routine and not serious injury. It truly feels like a car salesman trying to add expensive seat warmers or stereo upgrades I don't want. It makes it so I can't trust anything she says. I was also shamed by this woman. She scolded me repeatedly for letting vaccines lapse and not coming to see her sooner, even though the last few years have been really hard on my family (unemployment, deaths in the family etc) and bringing healthy cats into the vet wasn't a priority. Here I was trying to catch up on the lapse and I was told how negligent I am as a pet owner. She also discovered one of my cats had a flea and acted like it was the most disgusting thing she'd ever seen and told me *three times* how I was going to have to clean my whole house. She was in the middle of telling my how quickly fleas breed before I asked her to please stop. It was way over the top and felt designed to make me feel like a filthy person because the cat had a flea. This is ironic because the office is feeling really dingy these days. There was also a toxic atmosphere between this vet and her underlings, and they passive-aggressively bickered in front of me. The assistant also gripped my cat in such an uncomfortable, harsh way during the exam that I intervened and told her I would hold the cat instead. It wasn't hurting the cat, but it was intrusive and was adding stress to an already upsetting situation for the animal. Overall I think this is a vet to avoid.
