I would not recommend this hospital. They seem more interested in greed than pet care. They tried to bill me $250 just for a doctor to return a phone call for advice. Now, they are refusing to refill flea medicine--even though the box doesn't expire until April 2026--insisting on a paid visit first. It feels like they are out to get every dime they can. Happy to be able to bring my two dogs to Dr. Kong at Cotati Small Animal Hospital. She's very thorough and knowledgable. Took over an hour with us (two dogs, first visit) and caught a positive anaplasma on my new little rescue pup. My oldest dog has been licking and chewing her paws for 4 years. Vets have always noticed it, but that was it. One look and Dr. Kong said it's the result an allergy and here's what we're gonna do to treat it. For FOUR YEARS nobody has given me an action beyond the question "does she lick her paws?" yes. Yes she does. Since she was 8 weeks old she has licked her paws and that is why they are rust colored. We all knew this. Oh. You mean there's something we can DO for her? Well, thank you Dr. Kong! Taffy shall have relief soon. The staff is fantastic, and you can tell they all really like each other. Plus they have therapy dogs in there to boot. ALSO! Yes, there's MORE! I got right in at a time when it's nearly impossible to get an appointment as a new patient. Dr. Kong was my go-to vet for my senior dog and gave her the best care that she could. She really went above and beyond - she immediately diagnosed her with a UTI when other vets previously dismissed it, she would be on-call with us even after hours when my dog's dementia/anxiety got the best of her, and she always updated us on our pets as soon as any test results came in. She yelled she hung up on us several times she wouldn't even let us give her the correct information, so I hope that this office will find someone who can handle their clients. Not too sure what is going on at this place but when I take my dog to the vet and spend $500 on tests I expect to be able to speak to the doctor who is treating them either before or after - if not both! Apparently that is not the way of business here. I had to be way more assertive than I prefer to be in order to communicate with someone who knew what was going on with my dog... I got two vastly different diagnoses from two vets here and they still couldn't tell me anything for sure and didn't do the procedure that needed to be done to find out what is going on; Just prescribed 5 days of antibiotics when 7-10 is minimum recommended to get rid of the issue. Also as a bonus the lady at the front desk is so rude it's actually kind of funny. I'll take my dogs elsewhere from now on. read more

We have been coming here for over 15 years with our multiple pets. They are on time mostly, and very knowledgeable. The most important thing is I can trust them. They don't bill for ridiculous things like other vets and they are accommodating in being cost effective if you can only spend a certain amount. They care about the pets and the staff and vets are great. We have seen other vets in pinch emergencies but are always disappointed and are excessively charged. Dr.Cook has retired and Dr. Kong (?) has taken over. The staff is on edge, the prices always change. They quote you a price you pay but get the receipt and they put I extra charges. It was a fight and I was told well " if it's not a good fit it's not a good fit" this is very sad as my dogs and cats have been going to Dr. Cook since they were 7 weeks old. Vicki just said sorry you feel that way but I'm not arguing.... you can go somewhere else. They have no customer service skills anymore, and the animosity is beyond words. I brought my dog here because he started piddling in his sleep and my other vet had been injured and was out of his practice. I was told by the vet here that she thought he had a neurological disorder and would lose function of his hindquarters. She told me that in order to be referred to the neurologist I would have to first do x-rays and rule out arthritis. I moved forward with the x-rays and she told me that he had arthritis but what was more concerning was that there was a mass in the lower part of his spine. We then had him scheduled for ultrasounds to see what the mess was. His sub lumbar lymph nodes or swollen and without notifying me they did a fine needle aspiration of the lymph. I was told it could be a simple infection, inflammation, or cancer. She said she was concerned that it was cancerous. When the test results came in she told me that they found atypical cells that she thought were cancerous. She wanted me to come back in and do the same procedure a second time so that she could take a larger sample for a proper diagnosis. I decided to look for a second opinion. In doing my own research I found that the most typical form of Cancer associated with swelling of the lymph is anal gland adenocarcinoma. I called her office many times to see if she had checked his anal glands. After finding another doctor I received a call back from her THREE WEEKS LATER when her office was contacted to forward his paperwork. The specific type of cancer associated with the lymph has an estimated two months of lifespan and she waited THREE WEEKS to return my call. She had in fact NOT checked his anal glands and said "yeah that's a good idea, bring him in!" I was not going to give her another penny and she did check him for free but it was a very awkward conversation. It is now been about six months and his condition remains because I chose not to put him on a medication that may deteriorate other organs. Turns out... he's just an old dog experiencing incontinence. The other vet showed me the paperwork from this office and there was nothing in the paperwork that said atypical cells were found. She lied and left me terrified I would lose my baby many times over. Oh and also made over $3000 on my fear. read more

Got a recommendation from a local dairy owner who brings her dogs here. We are traveling in our RV for the next 6 months and our 2 yr old rescued Chihuahua needed teeth cleaning. Friendly staff at reception and the doctor who examined her at 8:30am on same day as cleaning appt was just so professional, thorough , and passionate about his patients. Our Chi is usually afraid of strangers but she just in his arms and was relaxed. Dr( sorry, forgot his name.... he had an elderly yellow lab he brought to work with him) did a very good estimate of cost and cleaning procedure. I wish I had done a before and after pic to post. Chichi had moderate plaques and the worse breath. We picked her up at 1:30 and she was fully revived and everyone on staff loved her. I would recommend this place 100% and this comes from an RN who knows about assessments and procedures. Total cost was like 425.00 approx. with no extra charge for 3 front teeth having to be pulled.( our last dental cleaning with other Chichi cost us 1000.00.! They charged 100 per tooth to extract extra on top of cleaning) We are very, very happy with this clinic! Will return to them if needed while we are in the area! read more

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Kong, her medical assistant Carol, and the other staff members at Cotati Small Animal Hospital. Our 12-year-old dog arrived in serious condition, and, while there is no cure for his kidney failure, Dr. Kong came up with a treatment plan that is enabling him to enjoy life again for as long as he has left. His eyes are bright again; he has a little pep; she has helped bring him back from death's door. The folks there all treat our little guy with tenderness and treat us with compassion. Dr. Kong also helped us consider the costs of different treatment paths so we could decide what was right for us. Plus, she calls after hours, after long days treating patients, to give us updates when necessary. read more

With such a range in ages things can change in a heartbeat. If I have one issue it's the hours, Monday thru Thursday 8-4. I am so glad I decided on this vet for my Suki. She had to have many teeth removed and I was so nervous. Everyone at Cotati Small Animal Hospital is exceptional. I cannot remember everyone's name. The secretary is very sweet and understanding, Suki loves her. The day after Sufi's surgery they called to see how she was doing. I brought her in for her follow up, everything went perfect. I have been a fan of Cotati Small Animal Hospital for more than 30 years! (My parents brought my childhood pets here.) I have brought many pets here and met many doctors. The current vets and staff are great. Dr. Cook and Dr. Kong are especially skilled at foxtail extractions, sometimes finding more than one at a time! When I've had emergencies they have often taken in my pets without appointments and fit them in during the day between appointments. They do not upcharge for expensive antibiotics like Convenia; it seems they actually discount that one, and perhaps they do others! The people at Cotati Small Animal hospital do not judge; they advise and then accept an owner's decisions. read more

I went to this vet on a recommendation and it has been the WORST experience. I understand there has been a practice change and a new vet is practicing. My puppy was given unnecessary antibiotics for a UTI that did not exist. I confirmed lab results with another vet after doing some research of my own. They don't let you in resulting in me being overcharged 3 different times. Keep in mind I have been here 4 times. The last straw was clear communication with the vet tech to ONLY give DHPP vaccine to find out on the bill my puppy was given other unauthorized vaccine. Dr. Kong charges a fee to speak with you in your car outside the vet to explain lab results. Horrible! read more

I've been taking my dogs to Cotati Small Animal Hospital since 1979. I started with Dr Groverman, and then along with Dr Cook. And now, Dr Kong has joined the practice! My dogs have presented normal things, and some very unusual and complicated things for the Doctors to deal with. They made referrals when necessary, and handled the follow up from those referrals wonderfully. I have NEVER had a bad experience in all the years and the many visits my dogs have had. I have been bringing my animals here (two dogs and four cats) for several years now after trying 1/2 dozen other vets in the Petaluma/Cotati area. From day one I have been continuously impressed with Dr. Cook and his staff. They are consistently friendly and professional and their fees are very reasonable. I love my animals tremendously and Dr. Cook has helped in emergencies as well as the day to day exams. What I like best is that he always takes time to explain the options when my animals are ill yet has never pressured me to take extreme measures of care nor made me feel guilty for not spending thousands of dollars to extend the life of a geriatric pet. I took my dog here today because he didn't eat last night and was acting like he needed to go to the bathroom but couldn't. I showed up without an appointment. I was greeted with, "And who is this?" Me, "This is Dusty, he's not feeling well." Clerk, "Hmm I don't see a Dusty on the appointments so we can't see him" Me, "Ok" Clerk, "But we can see him in an hour if you want to make an appointment".... Me, "Sure thanks!" I felt the approach to seeing my dog in an hour was a little odd, and full of attitude. This was just the beginning of doom. An hour later I bring dusty back and I greeted kindly by the clerk and then the vet. The Dr. did his exam and we concluded Dusty was having urinary difficulty and we discussed what to do next and how much it would cost. We decided he better put Dusty under and use a catheter to clear the tract and that he would most likely dislodge the stone fixing the problem. This was going to cost about $600, and I would pick Dusty up in a couple hours. I get a phone call an hour later explaining Dusty has stones in his blatter and more than likely needed surgery TO SURVIVE. I inquired about when we could do this and the Dr. replied that I should take Dusty to the VCA clinic for an ultra sound and surgery. I asked about how much that would cost and he replied "around $3000."! He told me I could pick up Dusty in a couple hours. I hung up the phone in a whirl wind of emotions. Is my dog gonna die? Can I afford this? is my dog worth this? Why do I have to take him somewhere else?..... I called around and was basically told they would have to do to Dusty everything I had just paid for again prior to Surgery. I learned that Vets love that initial consultation and exam... It's $600 !!! Don't wanna lose that! So that got me wondering why the Dr. was directing me away, I just wanted to keep my dog where he started off. I called the Dr. and he simply explained it was Friday and too short of notice for a surgery, that he was capable but just couldn't do it today. That is understandable. What I don't understand is why he didn't just tell me that from the get go. During the exam before the catheter and xrays. He knew then what was going on, but failed to express high likelihood of surgery within 24 to 48 hrs just to keep my dog alive. This wasted valuable time for me. I was now confronted with a $600 bill and my dog not one bit better than when I took him in. I asked for the xrays to provide the next vet. They weren't there.... They were out being made digital at the VCA clinic and wouldn't be available till the next day.. I offered to go pick up the physical copies myself and explained this whole thing was time sensitive wasn't it????? They agreed but requested I returned them because they were not my property but theirs.... Are you kidding me? My dog is ill and you just told me he might die if I he doesn't see a vet right away even though I'm standing in a clinic and just handed you $600 to get my dog back with advise to get him helped elsewhere. Now I'm faced with finding another vet with fear they will all do this to me. My guard is up and I'm sad, scared, and angry. This is how I left here today. My dog is scheduled for surgery tomorrow and a different vet who I had to beg to give me a free exam . Fun All I needed was honesty. They wanted a few bucks, so they inconvenienced me by starting a job they knew they couldn't finish. If you go here, you may want to confirm how committed they are to you. read more

Dr. Cook is wonderful and the staff is friendly and helpful! We have a very sweet, elderly dog, so we see Dr. Cook fairly often as you can see by how many check ins I have. Berry, our Sheltie, has arthritis , so we get his medicine here. He has had his teeth cleaned and toenails clipped. He had a strange abscess on his side, we were sent to another vet hospital for a scan, then returned to Dr. Cook for the follow up care. The office called to check almost daily to see how Berry was faring, with the draining wound and antibiotics. Dr. Cook does not do procedures needlessly, if time will help, then time is given rather than an expensive procedure! We really appreciate that! I have been a fan of these guys for almost 3 decades. I have story after story of them that shows their heart is all about the animals. I'll stick to two - the first one seems sad, but imagine you are me. My cat was sick, and I knew it was time. My husband took him in, and all fears confirmed. I got stuck at work late, of course! And then traffic, of course! Dr. Cook and one tech waited for me. Just so I could say good bye. Just so I could be with him. He had gotten me thru so much in his 15 years - I wanted to see him through this. I got there late, I held and hugged and kissed my boy. That was a gift that not every vet would have given me. It meant absolutely everything to me! My second story is of a lighter note. I was there with my dog, and they had a kitten they were bottle feeding back to life. She had been found in a ditch and brought to them. They had named her Slappy because the kitten got so excited when she saw her bottle, she would slap it trying to make it come out faster! I fell in love. I brought my pre-teen boys in to meet slappy, and a tech discussed what it meant to take her - feedings every 3-4 hours etc. The vet talked with them about how generous they were, and also that her life expectancy may be compromised because of her start. That was 2009, and Slappy was re-named Xena... (the warrior princess), and she still runs the house. She started her reign weighing in at a grand 9 oz.! The time they took with my boys made them better pet owners, and better men. I know that seems extreme, but I watched it. Until you've seen your 13 year old son set his alarm clock to feed the kitten, you have not seen miracles! So - through death and life - this vet has my loyalty! Recently moved near this vet and my neighbors go here so I thought I would try it out. I have a serious pet peeve when it comes to vets making you wait for your appointment. It seems like no matter what time your appointment is, you end up waiting an extra hr. I understand to a point, but over an hr and I get slightly miffed. I actually spent close to 2 hrs waiting at this vet the other day and that is just too long. After the long wait, my cat recieved care. Honestly, I just don't like the way this guy cares for animals. He's not a bad guy, but doesn't have the love a vet should have. H the shot he gave my cat went into the skin and out the other side, he then squirted the medicine onto the exam table and said "your all set" I had to tell him it didn't make it into my cat...so sorry, well do it again he said....i didn't leave with a good feeling about this place or this vet....try animal hospital of Sebastopol read more
