While on a Southwest road trip, we found ourselves spending the night in Las Cruces, New Mexico. When we asked the staff at our hotel for a local dining recommendation, they pointed us toward the historic village of Mesilla, just south of Las Cruces. It turned out to be excellent advice. Mesilla is a charming, historic community with an unmistakable Old World feel. Founded in 1848, it once served as the Confederate capital of the Arizona Territory and is perhaps best known as the site where the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid was tried and convicted of murder in 1881. Today, the village centers around a picturesque plaza surrounded by beautifully preserved adobe buildings, shops, and restaurants that make it well worth a visit. One of Mesilla's most famous restaurants is La Posta de Mesilla, which has been serving traditional New Mexican cuisine since 1939. Over the decades, it has expanded into a sprawling 17,000-square-foot complex made up of a maze of interconnected dining rooms. Its menu is built around century-old family recipes featuring the renowned red and green chiles grown nearby in the Hatch and Mesilla valleys. After what felt like a two- or three-minute walk through the restaurant to reach our table, we ordered margaritas and waited for the customary basket of chips. I added an order of chile con queso along with both the red and green salsas. Our drinks, chips, and salsas arrived promptly. The salsas were pleasantly spicy and packed more heat than the average restaurant version, something I appreciated. Unfortunately, the chile con queso never arrived. After unsuccessfully trying to catch the attention of one of the busy servers, we finally flagged someone down to remind them. By the time it reached our table, our entrées were only moments away, leaving little opportunity to enjoy it with the chips. My wife ordered two tacos with rice and beans. I chose the Folded Tacos--three deep-fried folded corn tortillas filled with seasoned ground beef and chicken, then topped with lettuce, tomato, and shredded cheese, served alongside refried beans and rice. So, how was the food? It was simply okay. Nothing on either plate stood out. The dishes lacked the bold flavors, vibrant presentation, and satisfying textures that make New Mexican cuisine so memorable. That said, my sampling of their food only included two plates. Perhaps another entree would have delivered a more authentic taste. Service added to the disappointment. It was slow, disjointed, and often difficult to find a server when we needed one. Since we visited on a Sunday evening, it's possible the restaurant was short-staffed, but regardless of the reason, the overall dining experience suffered. If you're visiting the Las Cruces area, don't miss Mesilla. It's one of southern New Mexico's true gems and absolutely deserves a stop. Let's start off by saying its very pretty & festive. Walking in really makes you feel like you're definitely going to have a good time. I got started with a sangria, received complimentary chips & spicy salsa, and went with green enchiladas. The sangria tasted like cough syrup, probably the worst i've ever had. When in NM you gotta try green chile dishes, so I went for the green enchiladas, the waitress suggested to upgrade to chicken for a few extra bucks, i agreed. My dish was delicious, but had very little chicken, only like 3 pieces, I've had enchiladas many times before, not what I expected. However- the green chile sauce was excellent, the dish came with a generous portion or rice & beans. When i got the bill they did charge me for the Sangria, i asked about it, and they said they did a 'same price substitution', but the michelada was half the price of the Sangria... so not sure if that was a fair practice? My wife and I had visitors from out of town and they wanted to go to La Posta for dinner. We had stopped going there because the food quality has gone down since we began going there 10 years ago. Our visit was last night and it was really disappointing. The food is always lukewarm never hot. My wife ordered Cheese Enchiladas, our visitors one quesadilla and the other one shrimp tacos. I had a Chile Relleno Burrito that came with a side of rice. In the past we have had complimentary sopapillas but not this time. The rice was dry so overcooked. Mexican rice is so easy to prepare that it is hard to mess up, but they did it. It was the worse meal my wife and I have had in Las Cruces, no good seasoning. I didn't complain because our visitors chose the place. It is a shame that such a historic charming restaurant has terrible food. There is no excuse that because it is a large place they quality is bad. We have eaten in more larger restaurants with great consistency of the quality of their food. You just need to have an executive chef to properly lead the large kitchen team. None of our friends go there unless they are dragged by their family and friends visiting our town. What better than eating at a historical building? Delicious food, exotic animals. This place has everything needed for a good time. Passed by Mesilla and definitely had to make a stop here for lunch. It's located in a historical 18th century stagecoach station and has all the charm. Once you walk in there are shops on either side before you reach the restaurant itself. Be sure to take a look at the jewelry store and the general store for chili goodies. Service is warm and prompt Love the complimentary chips and salsa that they brought out right away. Very efficient! I had the enchilada plate which was so delicious. Portions are HUGE. For 16 dollars this was both my lunch and dinner for the day which was a steal. Not to mention super delicious as well. Sauce is so tasty. The Mexican slaw was my second favorite item on the plate. Overall a great stop if you're in the area. Must visit! read more

History stop! Go here if you want to see this remaining post/ change stop on the Butterfield Trail from the 1800s. It had since been turned into a restaurant/bar. It is well known, so make a reservation if you can. You will also find yourself waiting a bit at the front to be sat, at your table for your server, and for your food/drink to arrive so plan accordingly. This last visit, we sat in the bar and had a margarita. The jalapeño and cucumber margarita was accompanied by a rim of honey and crushed pecans. This was by far an amazing experience for my mouth! Maxed out in beautiful Mexican decor, a jewlery store and a bird cages filled with parrots all inside. The staff was super friendly and inviting. The black barrel margarita was delicious, New Mexico IPA hit the spot. Chips and salsa were provided to the table and were ok, salsa was lacking a bit in flavor but acceptable. I order shrimp tacos the shrimp and drizzle was good but the tortilla was store bought, hard and flavorless, no slaw and the rice and beans were ok but rice was a little on the dry crunchy side. With all this being said, I still would visit again without hesitation probably just for drinks and ambience because it is so pretty and inviting. We visited this historic restaurant yesterday and were excited to try what we thought would be authentic New Mexican cuisine. While the restaurant itself is beautiful, full of character, and rich in history, the food was a major disappointment. The service was good overall, and the staff was friendly, but the food simply did not reflect true New Mexican flavors. I ordered the enchiladas, and the sauce was one of the worst I've had. My meal was also missing the egg that was supposed to be included. My husband specifically requested no tomatoes on his tacos, yet they arrived covered with tomatoes. This restaurant seems to rely more on its history, location, and atmosphere than on the quality or authenticity of its food. That's unfortunate because the setting is absolutely beautiful. With better chefs and a menu that stayed true to authentic New Mexican cuisine, this restaurant could be something truly special. As it stands, it feels more geared toward tourists than locals looking for a genuine New Mexican dining experience. read more

We came here because I'd read in several places that it's a must-try if you're in the El Paso area (it's about 40 minutes away). We decided to make the trip and check out the village it's located in--which turned out to be a really nice spot to explore! The decor and vibe of the restaurant were definitely on point. They even had macaws and parrots in cages, which added a fun touch while waiting for our table. The service was also friendly and attentive overall. However, one downside was that our server wasn't writing our order down. While that's fine if you can remember everything, unfortunately, a few items were missed. Thankfully, we weren't charged for those, so it wasn't a big issue. As for the food, some dishes were really good, but others were just okay. Drove 400 miles for our awesome supper on Monday night! When we parked we wondered if we'd be able to be seated as the parking area was very crowded & a lot of people were walking in. We entered and to our surprise we were seated right away for our 2nd visit! Our server, Paul was great & attentive! We shared the Shrimp cocktail (cerviche) & the 3 chicken tacos with beans & rice. He had a beer & I had a margarita! Both great! And, an order of 5 Cinnamon Churros. We asked if we could get 2 instead of the 5 and Paul took the time to ask the kitchen if that would be possible since we were driving through to Fort Worth. We wrapped up the 3 remaining churros & had heated up in the air fryer the next evening at our son's....They were just as great a day later... This place is decorated so cute for Christmas with the 'dining nooks & crannies'! Will be back next week Monday when we head back to Phoenix!! I came into town to help care for my uncle while he was battling cancer. This was not his first fight. It was his seventh round with a different cancer. He has beaten stage four cancer three separate times. Needless to say, his career military background and having just retired in October 2025 served him well. He has faced every diagnosis head-on like the true American soldier he is. During one of our quiet conversations, he shared something that clearly weighed on him. He was heartbroken that he never got the chance to take his wife out for their 55th wedding anniversary in December because he was in the hospital. The next day, I asked him a simple question. If you could pick one restaurant within a 100-mile radius, just one, where would you want to go once you had your strength back? Without hesitation, he said La Posta. Over the next few weeks, a lot changed. He was released from the hospital. He slowly began to regain his strength. First the cane went away, then short walks turned into longer ones, and eventually he was even driving himself from LC to EPT for doctor's appointments. When I finally asked if he felt strong enough to go to that meal we had talked about, he lit up. He started telling me stories. How his father used to bring him to La Posta. How it had remained top notch throughout the years. He went into detail about every menu item he loved. But the one thing he really wanted me to understand was the ambiance. You will get it when you are there, he told me. I called to see if they took reservations. We were not even sure they did. A young woman named Priscilla answered the phone. I explained the situation. My uncle was finally strong enough to return to his favorite restaurant, one that held a lifetime of memories, and he had missed celebrating his 55th wedding anniversary. I told her I wanted to surprise them and make the night unforgettable. I even mentioned I was planning to have flowers delivered. Priscilla did not hesitate. She immediately connected me with her manager, Teresa. I asked if we could have a larger table than one meant for three people because my uncle wanted to order everything. Honestly, I just wanted him to eat, to enjoy himself, to feel normal again. Teresa agreed without question. Then something unexpected happened. Teresa explained that Priscilla was a single mom of two who had recently started a floral business on the side and truly wanted to help make this night special. She asked if it would be okay to involve her. Of course, I said yes. I was transferred back to Priscilla and told her to go big. No expense spared. I gave her full creative freedom and an unlimited budget. Unbeknownst to me, Priscilla partnered with a friend who specialized in balloon arrangements. What she created was nothing short of breathtaking. Place cards. Multiple floral centerpieces. An ornate floral display. A large professional sign welcoming my aunt and uncle to the restaurant. She handled everything with grace, professionalism, and kindness, even as our party grew from three people to thirteen. And then the story took a turn. The day before the dinner, my uncle was rushed into emergency surgery. Suddenly, everything was uncertain. Half the family canceled to stay at the hospital. We kept Priscilla updated as events unfolded. Not once did she complain. Not once did she lose her composure. She adapted to every change with pure professionalism and empathy. She even adjusted the floral arrangements when we decided to bring flowers and food to the hospital instead. That is when I learned that the owners of La Posta had been informed of the situation. The male manager on duty, and I regret not remembering his name, passed along a message from them expressing their deepest condolences and gratitude. He also shared that they wished they could have been there to meet my uncle. There really are still good people in this world. After her shift ended at 4 p.m., Priscilla went to pick up her kids and then came back to the restaurant just to meet me. She walked me through everything she had created and explained the work behind it. When I asked how much I owed her, she paused and said she wanted to bless my family and could not accept payment. I was overwhelmed. Her work would have easily cost four to five hundred dollars. I insisted on tipping her at the very least, and she reluctantly agreed. The food that night was incredible. We had a wonderful server, and the food was amazing. We ordered extra meals to go so my cousins could bring my uncle his favorite dishes back to the hospital. It was a small way to lift his spirits during one of the darkest moments our family has faced. My uncle asked me to thank you for the food. And I want to thank everyone at La Posta for the hospitality, the compassion, and the humanity. When my uncle regains his strength and comes home again, we will return with his wife so he can finally give her the 55th wedding anniversary dinner they both deserve. read more

Fabulous experience for a first-time visitor to Las Cruces/Mesilla NM. The vegetarian combination includes their signature dish; a bean tostada compuesta, one chile relleno, and a cheese enchilada. Delicious and reasonably priced. This historic landmark has quite a story that includes the Wild West. The exotic parrots in huge cages are colorful like the entire interior of this beautiful New Mexican landmark. Though I arrived near closing, the waiter was patient and attentive. I have always wanted to eat at La Posta. When I was in Las Cruces over 10 years ago, I tried but they were full and a line went down the block. Now on this vacation in September I was able to. Very colorful decor in the multiple rooms. Nice menu with a large selection of margaritas. They also quite a few tequilas with stools & mezcal. I asked my server, Donovan for recommendations. I started with a Smoked Agave margarita with a float of mezcal. They serve a complimentary basket of fried tortilla chips and a spicy salsa. Next I got their signature La Patrona margarita with two tequilas. A much better drink. I got a cup of Pork Posole served with red chili, chunks of pork and hominy. Perfect appetizer. My entree was their La Posta Combination Plate with a chile relleno, a folded taco, green chili cheese enchilada with ground beef, refritos, rice and Mexican slaw. Lots of flavor.
