While on a Southwest road trip, we found ourselves spending the night in Las Cruces, New Mexico. When we asked the staff at our hotel for a local dining recommendation, they pointed us toward the historic village of Mesilla, just south of Las Cruces. It turned out to be excellent advice. Mesilla is a charming, historic community with an unmistakable Old World feel. Founded in 1848, it once served as the Confederate capital of the Arizona Territory and is perhaps best known as the site where the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid was tried and convicted of murder in 1881. Today, the village centers around a picturesque plaza surrounded by beautifully preserved adobe buildings, shops, and restaurants that make it well worth a visit. One of Mesilla's most famous restaurants is La Posta de Mesilla, which has been serving traditional New Mexican cuisine since 1939. Over the decades, it has expanded into a sprawling 17,000-square-foot complex made up of a maze of interconnected dining rooms. Its menu is built around century-old family recipes featuring the renowned red and green chiles grown nearby in the Hatch and Mesilla valleys. After what felt like a two- or three-minute walk through the restaurant to reach our table, we ordered margaritas and waited for the customary basket of chips. I added an order of chile con queso along with both the red and green salsas. Our drinks, chips, and salsas arrived promptly. The salsas were pleasantly spicy and packed more heat than the average restaurant version, something I appreciated. Unfortunately, the chile con queso never arrived. After unsuccessfully trying to catch the attention of one of the busy servers, we finally flagged someone down to remind them. By the time it reached our table, our entrées were only moments away, leaving little opportunity to enjoy it with the chips. My wife ordered two tacos with rice and beans. I chose the Folded Tacos--three deep-fried folded corn tortillas filled with seasoned ground beef and chicken, then topped with lettuce, tomato, and shredded cheese, served alongside refried beans and rice. So, how was the food? It was simply okay. Nothing on either plate stood out. The dishes lacked the bold flavors, vibrant presentation, and satisfying textures that make New Mexican cuisine so memorable. My impression is that, over the years, La Posta has evolved into a destination built to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit annually. In doing so, its food seems to have been toned down to appeal to the broadest possible audience, sacrificing some of the authenticity and character that made it famous. Service added to the disappointment. It was slow, disjointed, and often difficult to find a server when we needed one. Since we visited on a Sunday evening, it's possible the restaurant was short-staffed, but regardless of the reason, the overall dining experience suffered. If you're visiting the Las Cruces area, don't miss Mesilla. It's one of southern New Mexico's true gems and absolutely deserves a stop. As for La Posta de Mesilla, however, I'd recommend looking elsewhere for dinner. In a town with this much history and character, I'm confident you'll find a restaurant that delivers a more memorable meal. read more

I came into town to help care for my uncle while he was battling cancer. This was not his first fight. It was his seventh round with a different cancer. He has beaten stage four cancer three separate times. Needless to say, his career military background and having just retired in October 2025 served him well. He has faced every diagnosis head-on like the true American soldier he is. During one of our quiet conversations, he shared something that clearly weighed on him. He was heartbroken that he never got the chance to take his wife out for their 55th wedding anniversary in December because he was in the hospital. The next day, I asked him a simple question. If you could pick one restaurant within a 100-mile radius, just one, where would you want to go once you had your strength back? Without hesitation, he said La Posta. Over the next few weeks, a lot changed. He was released from the hospital. He slowly began to regain his strength. First the cane went away, then short walks turned into longer ones, and eventually he was even driving himself from LC to EPT for doctor's appointments. When I finally asked if he felt strong enough to go to that meal we had talked about, he lit up. He started telling me stories. How his father used to bring him to La Posta. How it had remained top notch throughout the years. He went into detail about every menu item he loved. But the one thing he really wanted me to understand was the ambiance. You will get it when you are there, he told me. I called to see if they took reservations. We were not even sure they did. A young woman named Priscilla answered the phone. I explained the situation. My uncle was finally strong enough to return to his favorite restaurant, one that held a lifetime of memories, and he had missed celebrating his 55th wedding anniversary. I told her I wanted to surprise them and make the night unforgettable. I even mentioned I was planning to have flowers delivered. Priscilla did not hesitate. She immediately connected me with her manager, Teresa. I asked if we could have a larger table than one meant for three people because my uncle wanted to order everything. Honestly, I just wanted him to eat, to enjoy himself, to feel normal again. Teresa agreed without question. Then something unexpected happened. Teresa explained that Priscilla was a single mom of two who had recently started a floral business on the side and truly wanted to help make this night special. She asked if it would be okay to involve her. Of course, I said yes. I was transferred back to Priscilla and told her to go big. No expense spared. I gave her full creative freedom and an unlimited budget. Unbeknownst to me, Priscilla partnered with a friend who specialized in balloon arrangements. What she created was nothing short of breathtaking. Place cards. Multiple floral centerpieces. An ornate floral display. A large professional sign welcoming my aunt and uncle to the restaurant. She handled everything with grace, professionalism, and kindness, even as our party grew from three people to thirteen. And then the story took a turn. The day before the dinner, my uncle was rushed into emergency surgery. Suddenly, everything was uncertain. Half the family canceled to stay at the hospital. We kept Priscilla updated as events unfolded. Not once did she complain. Not once did she lose her composure. She adapted to every change with pure professionalism and empathy. She even adjusted the floral arrangements when we decided to bring flowers and food to the hospital instead. That is when I learned that the owners of La Posta had been informed of the situation. The male manager on duty, and I regret not remembering his name, passed along a message from them expressing their deepest condolences and gratitude. He also shared that they wished they could have been there to meet my uncle. There really are still good people in this world. After her shift ended at 4 p.m., Priscilla went to pick up her kids and then came back to the restaurant just to meet me. She walked me through everything she had created and explained the work behind it. When I asked how much I owed her, she paused and said she wanted to bless my family and could not accept payment. I was overwhelmed. Her work would have easily cost four to five hundred dollars. I insisted on tipping her at the very least, and she reluctantly agreed. The food that night was incredible. We had a wonderful server, and the food was amazing. We ordered extra meals to go so my cousins could bring my uncle his favorite dishes back to the hospital. It was a small way to lift his spirits during one of the darkest moments our family has faced. My uncle asked me to thank you for the food. And I want to thank everyone at La Posta for the hospitality, the compassion, and the humanity. When my uncle regains his strength and comes home again, we will return with his wife so he can finally give her the 55th wedding anniversary dinner they both deserve. read more

What better than eating at a historical building? Delicious food, exotic animals. This place has everything needed for a good time. Passed by Mesilla and definitely had to make a stop here for lunch. It's located in a historical 18th century stagecoach station and has all the charm. Once you walk in there are shops on either side before you reach the restaurant itself. Be sure to take a look at the jewelry store and the general store for chili goodies. Service is warm and prompt Love the complimentary chips and salsa that they brought out right away. Very efficient! I had the enchilada plate which was so delicious. Portions are HUGE. For 16 dollars this was both my lunch and dinner for the day which was a steal. History stop! Go here if you want to see this remaining post/ change stop on the Butterfield Trail from the 1800s. It had since been turned into a restaurant/bar. It is well known, so make a reservation if you can. You will also find yourself waiting a bit at the front to be sat, at your table for your server, and for your food/drink to arrive so plan accordingly. This last visit, we sat in the bar and had a margarita. The jalapeño and cucumber margarita was accompanied by a rim of honey and crushed pecans. This was by far an amazing experience for my mouth! While the restaurant itself is beautiful, full of character, and rich in history, the food was a major disappointment. The service was good overall, and the staff was friendly, but the food simply did not reflect true New Mexican flavors. I ordered the enchiladas, and the sauce was one of the worst I've had. My meal was also missing the egg that was supposed to be included. My husband specifically requested no tomatoes on his tacos, yet they arrived covered with tomatoes. This restaurant seems to rely more on its history, location, and atmosphere than on the quality or authenticity of its food. That's unfortunate because the setting is absolutely beautiful. With better chefs and a menu that stayed true to authentic New Mexican cuisine, this restaurant could be something truly special. In the heart of little historic downtown square this is a beautiful resturant that is so big and great for groups and parties. Maxed out in beautiful Mexican decor, a jewlery store and a bird cages filled with parrots all inside. The staff was super friendly and inviting. The black barrel margarita was delicious, New Mexico IPA hit the spot. Chips and salsa were provided to the table and were ok, salsa was lacking a bit in flavor but acceptable. I order shrimp tacos the shrimp and drizzle was good but the tortilla was store bought, hard and flavorless, no slaw and the rice and beans were ok but rice was a little on the dry crunchy side. With all this being said, I still would visit again without hesitation probably just for drinks and ambience because it is so pretty and inviting. We came here because I'd read in several places that it's a must-try if you're in the El Paso area (it's about 40 minutes away). We decided to make the trip and check out the village it's located in--which turned out to be a really nice spot to explore! The decor and vibe of the restaurant were definitely on point. They even had macaws and parrots in cages, which added a fun touch while waiting for our table. The service was also friendly and attentive overall. However, one downside was that our server wasn't writing our order down. While that's fine if you can remember everything, unfortunately, a few items were missed. Thankfully, we weren't charged for those, so it wasn't a big issue. As for the food, some dishes were really good, but others were just okay. Drove 400 miles for our awesome supper on Monday night! When we parked we wondered if we'd be able to be seated as the parking area was very crowded & a lot of people were walking in. We entered and to our surprise we were seated right away for our 2nd visit! Our server, Paul was great & attentive! We shared the Shrimp cocktail (cerviche) & the 3 chicken tacos with beans & rice. He had a beer & I had a margarita! Both great! And, an order of 5 Cinnamon Churros. We asked if we could get 2 instead of the 5 and Paul took the time to ask the kitchen if that would be possible since we were driving through to Fort Worth. We wrapped up the 3 remaining churros & had heated up in the air fryer the next evening at our son's....They were just as great a day later... Overall fun spot. Cool setting and clean. The food is ok. Not good, not bad, just ok, in my humble opinion. The main issue is the same issue that many other Mexican food spots around here suffer from which is that the meat isn't seasoned. The drinks are good. Service is fine. Great ambience with things to look at everywhere as only Mexican restaurants can get away with. Good was really great! Delicious and reasonably priced. This historic landmark has quite a story that includes the Wild West. The exotic parrots in huge cages are colorful like the entire interior of this beautiful New Mexican landmark. Though I arrived near closing, the waiter was patient and attentive. I have always wanted to eat at La Posta. When I was in Las Cruces over 10 years ago, I tried but they were full and a line went down the block. Now on this vacation in September I was able to. Very colorful decor in the multiple rooms. Nice menu with a large selection of margaritas. They also quite a few tequilas with stools & mezcal. I asked my server, Donovan for recommendations. I started with a Smoked Agave margarita with a float of mezcal. They serve a complimentary basket of fried tortilla chips and a spicy salsa. Next I got their signature La Patrona margarita with two tequilas. A much better drink. I got a cup of Pork Posole served with red chili, chunks of pork and hominy. Perfect appetizer. My entree was their La Posta Combination Plate with a chile relleno, a folded taco, green chili cheese enchilada with ground beef, refritos, rice and Mexican slaw. Lots of flavor. La Posta De Mesilla is in the middle of the plaza of Old Mesilla and very popular, especially on a Saturday night. Gorgeous interiors but with overpriced gift shops; but they do sell some pretty badass salsa that is served with our dinner. They had the whole lobby decked out in Disney Christmas themed animatronics of Mickey, Minnie and Donald Duck. Super cute!! We were sat in this very back room filled with so many other people and it was hard for our servers to squeeze right through us, it was crowded! PROS:Very beautiful interiors even the ceiling had hand paints flowers and fruits. The music, the water fountain, the experience. The green salsa smothered over my Fiesta Fries and the their hard working staff! They do have 1 vegetarian fajita dish. They have a Gluten Free Menu which is great in itself. CONS: the menu lacked a lot of vegan and vegetarian options. You could get the guacamole salad for $10.00 but who wants just guacamole with lettuce for dinner which everyone gets a big meal? I got the fiesta fries with no cheese or sour cream and with extra guacamole and the green salsa. I just wanted more. They did forget my extra guacamole and green salsa and My fries had shreds of lettuce and diced tomatoes but the fries in itself for bland. I was grabbing the salt and pepper shakers the whole time. 1 more Con: their parrots in the cages! It just felt so sad having the parrots show some sign of distress and they looked like they wanted quietness but they were gorgeous birds. I could tell the staff were really caring about them. I would say bad service if there was service at all. We attended a wedding rehearsal dinner in a RESERVED ROOM and there weren't enough seats. There was one server, had to beg for water (never got it), and waited over an hour and a half for my drink; leaving the room and ordering at the bar seemed to be the best bet to ever get a drink. Server was rude, and was obviously over whelmed. When the food was finally served two hours after ordering they yelled across the room to serve plates. The whole thing felt chaotic, and the staff ill prepared. I will NEVER host a large group at La Posta after seeing how they handle private parties. read more

I have come to La Posta my entire life, but after the pandemic I decided to take my in laws to the most "New Mexican" restaurant I could think of in Cruces. Unfortunately, the food isn't New Mexican anymore. The sopaipillas were dry, and only offered as a dessert. The food is now Tex-Mex at best. They really could have stood out more in this aspect, and because this wasn't a good representation of our culture and history the way I counted on, I had to leave a poor review.
