I asked the consierge for a recommendation for casual dining and not a tourist spot. He pointed me to La Republica as his place to go after work. A short walk later I arrived and yes it is mainly local. They have an impressive bar as it must be 20' plus tall. After a brief "discussion" with the host as they insitied I either sit by the door or restroom I secured a nice table near the bar. I started off with their vensison sausage ans I should have stopped there. It was 2 huge links and enought for an entree. Cut to the chase they were awesome and the dipping sauces that accompanied them were perfect. At the servers suggestion I ordered the schnitzel. It arrived luke warm and rubbery not exactly what I was expecting. I picked at it and ate most of the delicious potato salad that accompanied it. Service was fine even as they started to get busy. Great find ! After walking out of another Resturant because of really bad services we walked in here. Immediately warm , friendly , and inviting. Seated promptly and drink orders taken. They had zero problem with preparing pork knuckle ( see previous review of Havlickova Resturant ). Live music , great beer, and a ridiculous tender knuckle without the attitude! Good food. Certain dishes really are large portions! I've never photographed a meal before, but the Roast Duck with Dumpling was so big I placed an iPhone 5 beside it for scale. Nice ambience with live music in the evening. They vast selection of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails fills more pages of menu than the food! Friendly staff, even if they are a little forceful with their recommendations... We noticed the waiter was as emphatic with the people at the next table about the duck and dumplings... The place has a modern interior with a lot of empty different beer bottles as a part of decor; their large menu book has an enormous cover and offers traditional Czech cuisine. The portions are also traditionally big and the meals are tasty. Besides, this restaurant has a great choice of beer including German, Belgian, American, French and even Australian types. Our second night in Prague our tour director from Scenic recommended La Publica since it was just across from the Marriott where we were staying. It's a beautiful space with an upstairs for music. We got seated right away and our beer and appetizers came right away. My bean soup was ok. Unfortunately our main course took and hour and 10 minutes. When I complained the waiter said it was only 40 minutes which is way too long, but he later apologized because it took over an hour. We dine out all the time and this has never happened before. Our deserts got comped, but our entire meal should have been. But, that is really besides the point. The food was just average and worth waiting that long for. I could only suggest going there for drinks at the bar at best. read more

The food is traditional Czech food which was reasonably priced and pretty good. The portions are very large especially the mixed meat plate! We were staying at a hotel nearby and tried this place for dinner. It was pretty good. We had duck rillettes and terrine for apps, one was bland, the other good, don't remember which. Main entrees were pork knuckle, pork ribs and roast duck. The ribs taste just like your typical American BBQ ribs, decent but nothing special. The pork & duck were good, they do need to go with the accompanying sauces. The portion was huge so we only took a bite or two of the dumplings and still couldn't finish the meat. Pricing was very reasonable. Environment was nice, decent service, there's a guy playing 60's music, not loud, worked well for background. We didn't understand the Czech wording but recognized many songs. One complaint, we were in a table in the back with bench on one side and tall chairs on the other. The chairs have arms and their back is next to railings so it was difficult to get in and out. read more

My wife ordered a pork knee 2 days ago ang the waiter told her to wait 30 mins for preparation (its for to go). Pork knee was good. Today i came back for another one after i placed my order for to go they let me sat on the bar to wait. I was expecting like 30 mins as previous waiting time. So i ordered a glass of beer while waiting but after my first sip my order arrived thats kinda odd. So i finish my beer and went back to the hotel. When we are ready to eat i opened the foil, not bad but once i slice the skin its like a RUBBER and the FATS was coming out... Ending was...it went all to waste. read more

I don't think this is a tourist trap, in fact we felt they weren't interested in attracting tourists (or Americans?) because the moment we arrived the host brusquely announced they had no tables available when clearly they did! So off-putting! We said we were happy to wait at which point he hemmed and hawed a bit before deciding to grudgingly lead us upstairs to a table overlooking the main room below, which was great for people watching plus we were right next to the band. The best part of the experience here (and only reason for three stars) was the live music from a combo (enthusiastic banjo/vocalist, trumpet, sax, and tuba) playing very fun jazz/Dixieland/oompah selections, and the warm energetic slightly rollicking feeling of a local beer hall with lots of fun old pictures and offbeat decor. And then there's the food: reasonable prices for mostly sizable portions (but not the highly over-salted goulash we ordered, which was meager), but sadly quality seemed lacking. Besides the aforementioned nasty goulash, we had the half duck which was a generous portion but too dry and very little flavor. The excellent cooked red and white cabbage that accompanied the duck was delicious and helped a lot, but sadly the two types of dumplings that also accompanied were disappointing as well. For desert, we had a decent apple strudel with a delicious scoop of vanilla ice cream, but we had less enthusiasm for our second desert choice, a local specialty cheese dumpling with a bit of apple filling in a thick sweet white sauce - we ate over half then gave up and concluded it is probably an acquired taste! Pilsner Urquell on draft to drink was very nice and looked like a big selection of bottled beers and respectable list of local wines to choose from as well, again all at reasonable prices. Service beyond the rude lying host was pleasant but uneven. So go for the music, drinks and the ambiance at a very good good price but don't expect great food. read more

The service we received really sucked. I think our server was apparently trying to live up to the Czech image of coming across like they did not care if they have your business or not. We visited the restaurant with our company yesterday. We made a booking at this place as we heard it is a nice place to go to and we had an important visit from America so we wanted to impress. However, the evening was very disappointing. There was a huge issue with my colleague's dish - I will not go into details. I had to deal with the manager as I am a native Czech speaker and his behavior was outrageous, he was very arrogant and rude and made me feel stupid as he basically tried to say that we are making up what we found in my colleague's dish. I understand that even in a very good restaurant something bad can happen with their food but the behavior of the manager was absolutely awful and we would never go back to this restaurant. read more
