This is a small business that serves family style authentic meals. We ordered the 2 tacos ( one chicken and one carnitas) and the steak Al caballo ( they were beef) that came with beans m, rice salad and 2 home made tortillas. My husband really enjoyed his meal. My tacos were good but I liked the chicken better than the carnitas as I thought the carnitas were a little to salty for my taste. I also ordered a cheese palisades, it was delicious and fresh. The service was good and quick, The bill was not very expensive given the rising cost of food.

Complimentary appetizer with bean dip was quite good.

Very disappointed in my first experience here. After reading the reviews, I thought that it would be at least decent. Coming next back from D.C. after a long day, my friend and I just wanted some food and we were craving so we decided to stop by. Such a shame because we wasted our time. Walking in, there was an awkward vibe in the air because I guess we looked lost or somewhat like we were "in the wrong territory" so we got a lot of stares and it made us feel uncomfortable. Well I just ignored the feeling and came up to the register to order some food. I showed the cashier exactly what I wanted through a picture on Yelp. The lady then proceeded to answer me back in Spanish. I thought it was force of habit at first but then it became clear to me that she did not know much English. This made it difficult to communicate and the more I asked "what?" the responses just came back in Spanish. I was trying to cooperate within the best of my ability but in the end I settled for what she thinks I wanted. Well needless to say, the order was incorrect. We came there around 8:45 and our food ended up coming out around 9:30. I guess....I ordered one chicken and one steak tacos order with rice because that's what it said on the receipt. The one error that I might have done that caused them trouble is that I changed our order to "for here" instead of "to-go." And even in that case, the cashier lady said it was fine and told us to take a seat. Also when she told me the total for the meal it ended up being around $15 and I didn't understand why but when I asked why, she couldn't understand me. Anyway so I just gave up on ordering and handed her the money. I asked her how much it was because I probably had change but she kept repeating it back to me in Spanish and insisted on taking the $20 I had in my hand. I must say I have never experienced such service before. After sitting for a while and waiting for our food, I noticed that several people that came in after us had already gotten their food. I didn't know what to think of this, but I certainly was annoyed. I didn't think that our food should have taken as long as it took them because I noticed they brought out the same dish we ordered but to another table that had come after us. Well, even though at this point I was pissed off, I still tried to remain calm. We asked the people and the cashier behind the counter what was up and they said it would be about 2-3 more minutes but it ended up being about 7 minutes. Now about the food... It was okay, not great. I don't think I would have thought it was even okay if I wasn't as hungry as I was. They brought us two steak instead of one and one chicken. I was too hungry to complain so I just went with it. The steak was very chewy and hard to swallow. The rice was good along with the beans. Overall, the food was only half decent and definitely not worth the wait. Maybe I didn't get the right dish, or maybe I just came on a bad day. Well all I can say is...if you're ever thinking about coming here, bring a translator or speak the language. That is all.

    La Roca plate and tacos

--Food-- -Bean Dip- The complimentary black bean dip with homemade fried tortilla chips alone is enough to keep me coming back for more. It seems so simple but it's delicious and unique to this place. -Tacos- The beef tongue taco is my favorite item on their menu. It's simply prepared and come sprinkled with a little bit of onion and cilantro. The beef tongue is very tender and juicy and that's why I love it. I think about 3-4 tacos are enough to satisfy since they aren't very large. -Papusas- I thought their papusas were decent and definitely really cheesy. Not the best, but I would probably order it again. -Beef and Yucca- I've pretty much enjoyed everything I have ordered aside from their beef and yucca dish. The beef was dry and the yucca fries were just okay. They also have plates like the La Roca special or Plato tipico which come with various items. I think these are good if you're like me and are reallllly indecisive and it's your first time. It's just a good way to scope out the whole menu instead of just committing to one item and not liking it.

    Carne asada burrito

Burritos!!! All my Cali friends swear there's not good taquerias in DC and while one place can't conquer the Mission, I'm hoping for more competition in these neck of the woods (DMV area that is) They have a really good carne asada burrito (although we could've had more meat) that was nice, hot and crispy. My better half had the tacos and while she's not a fan of corn tortillas, she said these were the best she's ever had but the burrito was the star of the show.

I've visited this Salvadoran place a couple times and I say that my biggest suggestion is eat as much of the free appetizer as possible. That stuff like is like crack... It's thick, freshly made, slightly greasy chips with refried bean dip and parmesan cheese on top. So, so good. It's probably the best thing in the whole restaurant. It's a hole in the wall type joint with lots of latin folks as customers so you know it's going to be pretty good and authentic as it's less Americanized. I'd recommend trying the pork and cheese pupusas as the other ones are kind of dry or bland. The pupusas are made of two thick tortillas with cheese and pork (or bean, beef) inside. They cost about 1.75 each and are about the size of a teacup plate. Some of their other dishes look good such as the soft tacos but I have to warn you that the meat can be very dry for any dish including the yuca con chicharron (beef and yuca). The yucca was under cooked on the inside but the skin was crispy. I highly suggest using the sauces on the table! So delicious. There are two green sauces, one spicy and other tangy. The orange sauce is a bit of both and a bit on the creamy side. It'll make anything you order taste delicious! I'd stop by again and just eat the complimentary appetizers, pupusas and yucca!

The food is simply amazing here. I ordered the El Catracho and every single bite is good. The people are extremely friendly (unlike the other place right across the street) and the food is good too. I've been twice and can't wait to go again.

When we were driving on Hwy 1, my friend and I passed a bunch of pupuserias, panaderias, and other Latin shops and I knew I was gonna have to hit one up while I was in town. Luckily on our drive-by meal run, I picked the right place! Cute decor, clean restaurant, friendly people, good prices, and great food--what more can you ask for? At first, I wasn't that hungry when we walked in, but like a true Yelper, I wanted to get a nice variety of items. We ordered 4 pupusas, 3 queso and 1 revuelta (beans and pork). My friend doesn't dine on the swine, but really the queso were better anyway. We also had sopa de res (beef stew with a rich, flavorful broth, cilantro, lime, beef, cabbage, yucca, and corn). Of course I can't go to any Latin place without getting platanos! Theirs come with refried beans and crema fresca. Yum! I also just had to get flan, which really wasn't worth it, not creamy enough, maybe over-cooked? They had other desserts, so maybe try one of those instead. The total bill was less than $25 and it fed 3 of us til we were fat & happy :) Overall I am really in love with the food and could see myself going back tomorrow before my flight back to Texas! :D

    Mar y Tierra, delicious!

I had a really good experience at this place. I ordered a Mar y Tierra and I have no complaints. The food was served in a timely fashion. The waitress was very nice and attentive.

La Roca has always been a favorite of mine since I started going here like a year ago. Almost everything I have tried is great. The only reason I don't give them 5 stars is because for me their service has been hit or miss. I usually like their balaida, a nice thick but soft tortilla with beans, sour cream, avocado, and cheese with a choice of eggs or meat. I also like their pupusas. One of the most interesting things I have tried here is the camarones guisados. This well seasoned and sauced shrimp was above and beyond what I expected. When I tried it, it surprised me the most because it tasted like my mom's cooking. I go crazy for something like this; rice, beans, and a meat/seafood with a well seasoned orange in color/paprika looking sauce. I definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a cheap place to eat and a place that has that home made taste.

Plus it's really the only type of food from South of the Border that I know my stomach will not have a problem with. Some of the other Latin food I sometimes need to be careful about eating. I found this teatau ant online, and I came right over here during my break. Instead of ordering regular fried chicken, I decided on their baked chicken platter that came with four pieces. A chicken breast, wing, leg, and thigh. The platter also came with a side order of potatoes which also a sure bet for my body. The service was fast, and I basically ate my lunch right there in the restaurant. The chicken was great and I will remember to come back here in the future.

Unfortunately, the El Pollo Rico Woodbridge, VA location is a huge disappointment. The chicken is consistently dry, over-grilled/burnt and noticeably spicier than it used to be, completely missing that signature flavor. There's nothing worse than dry chicken breast and a hard wing. I went three days in a row just to be sure, and it was the same result every time. This isn't a one-off issue. It's a clear drop in quality. Sadly, I won't be back. Time to find another spot.
