Pay at the cashier and bring your receipt down the to the scoopers and tell them which flavors you want-- I opted for medium which was 3€ for up to three flavors. I chose biscotti, pistachio, and dark chocolate. The biscuit one had actual cookie pieces in them--SO GOOD! Also decided to go all in and got the panna (cream), adding a nice delicate fluff to my gelato. Pro tip for you is that all the flavors they have on their wall (and their gelato is under a lid so you can't see) is in Italian so look up yelp menu pics for assistance beforehand so you don't hold up the line. During my stay in Rome, I tried many different gelato places, and La Romana was definitely my favorite! A small cup was 2.20€, and you get to choose two flavors. I chose pistachio and something called Biscotto della Nonna. It had little crunchy biscuits and chocolate swirled in. I originally wanted Croccante della Nonna, but unfortunately, they were all out. Nevertheless, the gelato here was excellent and better than all the others that I tried in Rome. All the flavors sounded so good, it was hard to choose. They also offer free whipped cream on top in 3 flavors: original, coffee, and chocolate. I got the coffee whipped cream, and it tasted like real coffee! This is the most aesthetic gelato shop I've ever been to. It's not only delicious, but sitting in there is such a pleasant experience because it's so clean and the workers are all very friendly! First time in Rome. Asked the hotel reception for good pizza and the La Romana recommendation came as a super bonus. After dinner I walked there and the line was wrapped around the corner! If you are in Rome on vacation, GO HERE FOR GELATO! I wish I could have gone x8000 more times. Before you go if you don't speak Italian, go to their website and decide what flavor you want: http://www.gelateriaromana.com/en/cat0_6657-the-tastes-of-tradition.php Why? Because you'll have a tough time deciphering the flavors written on the chalk boards inside. Also the gelato is kept in metal canisters to keep it fresh so you can't gawk at it like many other gelaterias you'll pass by. When I went the servers spoke English but your mileage may vary. You have to pay first and get a ticket before you get your gelato. The sign on the register is pretty clear, cono = cone and coppa = cup. "medio" is hefty serving and you can pick two flavors. Piccolo is small. I had caramel panna cotta with pignoli (pine nuts) and it was THE BEST GELATO I HAD IN ALL OF ITALY! I went to Florence, Venice and Lucca. La Romana is the best. I love the melted chocolate they put in the bottom of the cone and the real (not squirt can) whipped cream on top! My husband had "Bacio di dama con mandorle tostate" chocolate hazelnut with toasted almonds and it was also amazing. Someone recommended me this gelateria because it was just a few minutes from the hotel we were staying in, he told us not to leave Rome without having some ice cream there. We got pretty surprised when we got there: a queue of about 20 people, mostly locals, at 11pm on a cold February night. Can I just start by saying that this is absolutely the best gelato that I've ever had in Italy. It is incredible is just delicious!! After discovering the place I had to go in every night for the rest of my trip! The prices are incredible and cheaper than any other gelato place I visited while in Rome. The employees are all very nice and patient. The inside is very very clean and very modern as well. This is hands down the best gelato I've had in Rome (and I've had a decent amount of gelato, including Giolitti, Gelateria del Gracchi, Venchi, Frigidarium, Fata morgana - PS let me know if you have more places that are amazing). The only downside is that their menu is in Italian and there's no English, but the lady gladly answered in English when I asked what fruit flavors they had (mandarin, strawberry, banana, mixed berry, and I think one more that I don't remember right now) serving me. I then asked what the most popular flavor was, and she said it was the hazelnut cream with banana and chocolate while she reached for a spoon giving me a sample! The chocolate hazelnut was quite delicious, so I got that. She then suggested the banana with it, and I said ok! Great choice. I got a small in a cone, and they have chocolate drizzling out of a tap; she put a blob of that at the bottom of my cone. Both flavors were wonderfully flavored and creamy, and the consistency was amazing. The chocolate hazelnut was a tad sweet, but it was super delicious, had real whole nuts in it, and had real chocolate. It was so good. The banana blew my mind away; I was a bit hesitant getting the banana at first because I don't normally like banana-flavored foods (probably because they're all artificially flavored), but this banana, wow. It tasted like real banana, and I could see the banana seeds in the gelato. It was amazing. The entire time I was eating my gelato, I was thinking about how good it tasted. Then, as I was almost finished, I reached the liquidy chocolate at the bottom of my cone. Great ending to a great treat; I left so happy! There are some chairs and tables in the shop as well, so you can sit there to enjoy your gelato. They have a bunch of sweet cake-y desserts in the refrigerator that looked pretty delightful as well. One of the best gelato places so far on our Euro Trip! Completely recommend! Walked by this place while grabbing lunch at a pizzeria nearby and said I would return since it was close to our hotel. Entered a bright, clean atmosphere. Could not understand all the Italian flavors posted -- luckily they have an English menu available! I chose to get a cone (which they ask if you would like chocolate or white chocolate to fill the bottom) and I tried the Crema Del 1947, Pesto di nocciola trilobata, and the Zabaione come una volta flavors. All three were fantastic! The server also asked if I would like fresh cream on top so I said "Sure!" Why not? :) This single cone order came out to 2.50 euros which I believe is a very good price!! The Crema del 1947 was lemony due to the lemon zest while maintaining a creamy texture. Pesto di nocciola trilobata had tiny hazelnut chocolate pieces. On the last night of our trip to Italy, my boyfriend and I were walking back to our hostel and came across this gelateria. I got us turned around and we walked about 3/4 of a mile in the wrong direction, so it was dumb luck that we ended up coming this way. There was a long line out front of young, beautiful people, so we felt like this would be a good bet for one last tasty gelato. They put melted chocolate in the bottom of the cone for no additional cost! I wish American ice cream shops would take notes. SO good! I came here the second time I visited Rome and I can say that it was the best gelato I've gotten in Italy. The flavors are all in Italian but the workers are super helpful in translating or helping you pick out a flavor. I asked which flavor they recommended and they immediately asked if i was in the mood for fruity/nutty/chocolatey/light/rich and then recommended popular flavors as well as their personal preferences. There are many options to choose from and the price was very reasonable for a cone with three flavors. They have fountains of chocolate which they fill the bottom of the cone with. It's what dreams are made of - I need to get one of those fountains installed at home. All the flavors I got were wonderful and creamy, I never wanted my gelato to end. Even during a pretty chilly day in January, this place was PACKED and line out the door! Very cute location and it's somewhat near the Borghese Gallery (MUST GO). Prices are comparable to other gelato places in Rome (around $3 for 2 scoops). Seating is limited, but not impossible to find. Unfortunately for me, there weren't many English speakers working here and the flavors were in French.. Thinking quick on my feet, I awkwardly waited around to see what everyone else got and kinda just.. tried to get the same thing.
