We were about to get ready for bed at our hotel down the road and we got a hankering for gelato. This place was recommended by our hotel clerk as the 'best gelato in Roma' so we walked down the road to try it out. We tried a few different flavors but man o' man the cookies and cream was incredible. It is a vanilla cream based gelato with hard crunchy chocolate cookie bits. This is real gelato. I'm not even much of an ice cream/gelato/frozen yogurt person but this place is amazing. It was recommended to us by our hostel receptionist and I'm so glad we made it in a couple of times before we left Rome. There was line out the door but it moves fast and is well worth the wait. For only 2 euros, you get a cone with chocolate (I personally got the white chocolate which I loved), 2 scoops of gelato, and a generous helping of freshly made whipped cream (amazing stuff!). Definitely the best gelato that I've ever had. Our hotel happened to be located near this gelato shop and we just so happened to walk by it a couple of times a day... I won't deny that we actually ate gelato from them twice in one day (it was that good!). This is the ONLY dessert place in the entire world that my husband has actually been excited about. They give you a homemade waffle cone and fill the bottom with warm melted chocolate (either dark or white), add some gelato and then top it off with fresh cream. We tried a lot of gelato in Italy... and really none of the other places came in close to this one. I tried their walnut, almond, hazelnut and pistachio to name a few (all were excellent). My husband was partial to stracciatella. There was a language barrier... so it wasn't easy to communicate what the flavors were (otherwise I would have tried more!). We happened to be walking to a (closed) place and stumbled upon this place (like most people did). The lines and madness made us curious, but who can really pass up gelato? They do unique combinations of gelato and form scratch (because you can see their il laboratorio to the right of their shop). Everything is in Italian (you were warned) and the lady that helped us was not nice whatsoever (when we asked her a question). 3 scoops (con panna), it was the most amazing gelato I have had in Italy and I've had gelato at least one a day somewhere. The hubs got tiramisu and chocolate (the chocolate was decadent, heavenly, and amazing!). I tried the Pine Nuts, Orange, and Cookies & Cream. The pine nuts and orange ones were mind-blowing. La Romana has some of the best gelato flavors I've ever tasted in Italy. If you get a cone, you have the option of filling it with Nutella or white chocolate first! Then the gelato. Bacio had almonds in them which was amazingly good. The gelato is creamy and rich with flavor. They even give you am option of whip cream on top. Tomorrow I'm going to try the mascarpone and the pan a cotta. Honestly, the absolute best ice cream in Rome! I love me all the gelatos but this place is bomb for their unique and delicious flavors of ice cream. The workers are super friendly and always recommend good flavors based on what you like. My favorite so far is their caramelized fig with ricotta. Amaze balls! You get a choice of three sizes, small medium and large. Then choose come or cup. Chocolate sauce on the bottom? Yes please! Small gets you two flavors and medium gets you three. Not sure about large since I haven't gotten one that big yet. You also have and option to add a dollop of whip cream on top of it all. My tour guide in Florence said that the best gelaterias were the ones that did not present their colorful gelato on display, as the good ones did not have to do that. At La Romana you can't see the flavors, but they are happy to give you plenty of samples. After much taste-testing, I opted on a small cup (2 euro) with pistachio, lemon, and chocolate cream (you get to choose a cream to top the gelato!). I think about 3 scoops is only 3-4 Euros which is a steal! and then after they put on scoops they even ask if you want cream on top, which is essentially one more entire scoop of goodness. There was one boy there who knew wonderful English and he realized right away that I was American and made his way over to personally assist me. Wish we had gelato this good in the states. I've seen the Colosseum, visited Venice, seen works of art from Boticelli, Michelangelo, but nothing gets me as happy as the gelato here. Before I used to think what's the big deal with gelato... but this place sets gelato apart from ice cream. With most ice cream, you taste the creamy texture and the flavoring but with the gelato here, the flavors are so vivid and pronounced... OMG. The chocolate, is so insanely rich... it's like you're eating soft chocolate. (With most ice cream, you feel it's chocolate flavored.) The biscotti is packed with several unique flavors and so good. The vanilla with lemon is so creamy... I don't think you can go wrong with any of the flavors. We've been here twice in 2 days and trying to fit in another trip tomorrow. This place does fill the bottom of the cone with chocolate but the flavors of the gelato is so tasty, the chocolate isn't a big deal. It sure is a nice touch though. Lastly, the lesson I learned in Italy about gelato is to look for metal lids. From tips from locals and an another review is the places that have the best gelato have metal lids on their gelato. While most places have their gelato out in a metal container, the top places will have have metal lids on their prized gelato. You can't go wrong with this tip but with all the gelato places, not many will have metal lids. When you do find a place that does, be sure to get a cone. So good!!! read more

Knowing that I really wanted gelato one more time before leaving Rome and knowing my absolute curiosity, I convinced my partner to stop in here after dinner. Thankfully the line was shorter by the time we got inside. BEST GELATO WE HAD during our one week stay in Rome (and one day day-trip to Firenze). AND it's the cheapest we had. Small cup is 2,20 euros (2 flavors). The biggest BIGGEST size they have is 4 euros with 5+ flavors. Super cheap and ABSOLUTELY delicious flavors. I got the pistacchio and nutella flavors. My partner got some coffee flavor with chocolate. I typically don't like coffee ice cream because it's too strong, but this coffee flavor was toned down and just absolutely delicious. I am so sad I only discovered this on my last day in Rome, but I sure as heck will be returning!!!!! read more
