I lived in La Scala or as it's now called "Veranda" on two separate occasions. Despite the name and ownership change, the issues will remain the same as the entire building hasn't been gutted and completely overhauled. The first time I had a one bedroom corner unit on the second floor. The ventilation was okay in the unit but I always had my windows and both balcony doors open. The second time I lived here was a different story. This time I had a first floor two bedroom, two bathroom unit. Initially it didn't seem so bad, I was busy, not home a lot, and it was before Covid. During Covid it changed. In the span of just two months my unit had three major water leaks. The first leak I noticed and reported when I noticed wet carpet in the hallway outside my apartment. I reported the issue early on a Saturday and no one came to identify or attempt to fix the leak until Monday. It took over a week for the repairs to be completed and during this time there were extremely large dehumidifiers placed in my unit in the peak of summer, making the unit unbearably hot. And these dehumidifiers drove up my power bill and rendered my kitchen unusable. The second leak was actually an additional repair to this initial leak as they apparently repaired it incorrectly the first time. In the course of this repair they punched a wall through the kitchen into my second bathroom and lit a towel on fire... maintenance didn't notice but I noticed a burning smell in my apartment and went to investigate. This took another week to resolve and the wall was never properly patched. During this time my second bathroom was also unusable. About a month later I noticed water collecting in my first bathroom and they discovered yet another leak. Cue another weeklong repair. At one point my main bedroom closet's main bar collapsed and punched a hole in the wall. Maintenance repaired the bar but despite my call, they never repaired the hole. Ventilation in this unit was terrible. I ended up having to buy multiple dehumidifiers and somehow there was still mold in the closets and in the bathrooms. In addition as many other reviews have mentioned, noise was terrible. I called multiple noise complaints on my upstairs neighbors as they would throw parties until 3AM with people screaming "SHOTS" sporadically throughout the evening. Also someone above me had a dog that they would trap on the balcony and it would cry for HOURS on end. I mentioned this to management but they never did anything about it. They claimed no one above me had a dog in their unit but somehow dog toys would fall onto my balcony. Also, in 2018, my apartment was robbed by a former maintenance worker. He had copied a master key and was able to enter my locked apartment and tried to enter multiple times while I was home claiming a "work order". I never placed a work order. I left later that day and when I came home over $5000 of jewelry and designer goods was stolen. I called the police and have a police report and reported the issue to management. They just cited a rash of recent thefts in the building, changed my lock to one not accessible by a master key, but didn't compensate me at all despite me stating that the former employee had a key and entered my apartment TWICE while I was home. Honestly, if you have the option, don't live here. The mold issue alone is a huge problem not to mention the fact that the trash chute is frequently clogged and somehow fruit flies always get into your apartment even when you don't have fruit and infest because of the dampness. read more

Just a basic apartment nothing fancy except the vaulted ceiling unit (we didn't have that one) but if you can afford that one I'd find something newer or more renovated. Doesn't have central air or in unit laundry We lived on the second floor people beneath us complained we were loud. The people above us were loud too. The maintenance man walked in on me naked showering. All the doors were open. The shower is loud idk how it could have been an accident. He was changing the toilet seats which kept coming undone. I didn't know he was coming but he told me husband who was at work. My daughter was playing in the living room and that didn't make him stop and wait for a parent to come to the entrance. Weird. I wrote the office got a classic, I'm so sorry that happened to you response a month later. Extremely loud alarm. When I moved in my fridge wasn't working cooling properly, I was 8 months pregnant and bough groceries they all expired. The next fridge they brought was also not working lol what a coincidence. I had just washed the fridge down, the maintenance guy who Solely brought the fridge up looked like he had over strained himself. I felt really bad. I gave up and used an unwashed fridge the last time lol. They returned $50 for my expired groceries Clean outside of windows? What?? Have never heard of that in a lifetime of renting. Well we definitely didn't do that and there was bird poo. The cleaning fee is $200 and carpet is $180 if you don't do it yourself. I could keep going but I don't want to be nitpicking, that's what stood out most from my experience. read more

Kia was so helpful when we moved in, giving me a tour of multiple units when I couldn't go in person due to COVID. Amber and Sapphrina have been very kind and really helped us out with our new lease terms. thank you!! Only con I can think of is the walls are quite thin. We rarely have anyone over (very careful bc of COVID) because the folks below us have complained so many times (often times before quiet hours)!!. it's quite upsetting especially since we are respectful, feel like we are walking on eggshells. These apartments are lovely! We lived in them for 2 years. They're located off the California Interstate 5 Freeway in La Jolla, smack dab in the University City neighborhood. UCSD (University California San Diego) is located right behind these apartments, so it's a natural magnet and very affordable for students. There are a great many restaurants, shops, grocery stores (Ralph's, Whole Foods), and even movie theaters and a large Westfield Mall with an ice-skating rink, all within walking distance of La Scala apartment homes. This area has many more apartment rentals, all up and down Nobel Drive, from the 5 Freeway to the 805 Freeway. Another amenity for students who don't have a car is the convenience of a close commute. San Diego's intricate bus transit system is so close by, that the bus stops right at the corner of La Scala Apartments. We rented a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment and chose a unit on the top floor. With a top floor unit, your apartment will have a cathedral ceiling with transom windows that bring in a lot of light and cheeriness. Tall ceilings allowed us to have tall palm trees. Both bedrooms were sufficiently large and each was the same size (great for roommates), the bathrooms are a little on the small side but adequate, and closets are large enough for both clothes and storage for miscellaneous items. The galley-style kitchen has a large food pantry but I didn't like that there was no dishwasher. Cooking is electric and there's a built-in microwave. The separate dining room affords lots of additional storage behind mirrored sliding doors, plus there is a large balcony. We could watch Sea World's fireworks from this vantage point. The complex's amenities include a pool, gym (with instructors), an Internet space, coffee/kitchen area, laundry facilities, security buildings with night-time security guards, and underground, covered assigned parking. I loved the Internet cafe because I could get my work done without leaving home. It provided everything I needed: free use of their many computers, copying, faxing, and printing. The only negative here is that moving in or out is an ordeal. Since the security elevators that lead to all apartments are located in the underground parking area, and the underground parking entrances have such low clearance, it's impossible for moving trucks to enter this area to unload. Movers must trek all your belongings from the street to your living space. La Scala should've planned ahead more to provide an access elevator just for the purpose of moving residents in and out. However, in this respect, La Scala isn't any different than other, similar apartments along Nobel Drive, as many of them also have this same type of underground parking. My boyfriend lives here and even I can testify that you should NEVER MOVE HERE!! The apartments are actually disgusting. The carpet is stained and smells. The biggest problem I had was the ANTS. Ants EVERYWHERE! In the kitchen.. in the living room.. and even the bathroom. You'll find ants everywhere no matter where you turn. I have to spray the baseboards in raid every week just to keep them at bay. Absolutely ridiculous. You'll also find the building infested with these tiny flying bugs, I don't even know what they are. Additionally, the carpets in the hallways are nasty and have stains everywhere. The laundry room isn't much better. The locks on all the building doors are very finicky and you have to push the key a certain amount in to get it to unlock. The elevators are borderline unsafe. They're years past their inspection expiry date and malfunctions constantly. The doors will open without you fully being at a floor yet, there will be loud creaks and bangs as you're going up and down, and worst of all you have no option to take the stairs down to the garage floors. Also, what people say about the walls being paper thin are right. You can hear every bump, conversation, door closing, and shower running from every apartment surrounding you. It's clear they don't use a cent of your money to maintain the place. RUN FAR AWAY!!! read more

This place is horrible! Packed with college kids that show zero consideration for not only the residents, but the apartment building itself. The appliances are close to 15! years old, the washers are old, torn-up and filthy. There is no air conditioning!! They will rent to you with filthy old and smelly carpeting. The noise it outrageous and never stops. They claim you cannot have dogs, yet they are all over the property and the grass is completely ruined, as a result. They call this dump LUXURY and charge over $2,000 a month for a tiny one-bedroom. Motorcycles are ear-piercingly LOUD and you hear them all day and into the early morning. Be ready to hear your neighbor urinating, as the walls are SUPER thin. Doors are slamming both inside and outside ALL NIGHT LONG. The hallway carpets are very old and filthy and stink!! Also, the elevators are constantly out-of-order and the garbage stink from the place where you dump your garbage will blow you away!! STAY AWAY. You've been warned. read more

Don't believe the good reviews about this place. La Scala is the worst place you could pick to live! The property and the apartments are dirty and not well maintained. The water in the pool is really cold and gross! so is the Spa! cooler water than any other Spa! The equipment in the gym is broken and has not been fixed in the last 2 years. The parking lot gets flooded often and the leaks from the pipes in the ceiling will stain your car with dirty water coming from the pipes. The washers and dryers are so old and dirty!! The washers don't wash! Twice already the dryer stained my white pillow cases with big black stains that are impossible to remove. I had to throw away my white satin pillow cases twice already because of the black stains they got in the dryers. If you don't believe it come and check it out yourself. This is not an apartment I would recommend renting without seeing the apartment, the property and the laundry in person yet. There are tons of dogs in the property. I love dogs but the owners don't wash them so the elevator stinks. I don't blame it on the dogs but on the owners. And these are big dogs I am talking about. The appliances in the apartments are old and dirty and for some reason the apartments still have carpets. Our apartment was covered with fleas and they were all in the old and stained carpet. We found out the previous tenants had 2 big dogs so we know from where those fleas are coming. If you end up making the bad decision of moving to one of these run down apartments ask them to put a new carpet for you. Mold also grows in the carpet. You should also ask them to put a fan in your bathroom that vents to the exterior because the buildings are not well built and none of the fans vent outside. Fans only make noise but humidity and air will stay in your apartment. Watch out for Diego in the leasing office because if you need anything and talk to him he is useless and you won't get the help you need. He is completely lazy, unhelpful and he knows it. I am sure he won't last long at the leasing office because he does absolutely nothing for tenants or the property. He can't even read an email with a work order right. Save your words and try getting help from anyone else at the office. La Scala changes managers every 6 months. They used to have licensed Property Managers and now probably to save money they have managers that are not professional and have no license as Real Estate Agents or Property Manager. Their background is Marketing and they are not professional Property Managers. I would say the worst in this complex are the disgusting carpets and the thin walls that causes lots of drama between neighbors. The neighbor below you will complain you are stomping and making tons of noise when you are just walking in your apartment. Don't let the leasing office threaten you with eviction for that. You have all right to walk in your apartment. You cannot be held responsible for that horrible construction of the building. That is their fault , not yours. The unprofessional Managers will try to give you a really hard time just for walking in your apartment , All because the neighbor below you will complain. I suggest to stop them right there and even threaten them to get the help of an attorney. Only then they will stop sending you threatening letters telling you you are making too much noise just by walking in your unit. I think you will bring lots of trouble to your life by living in La Scala. You can always pay $100 more and live in a nicer apartment without carpets. I thought my room was pretty good. Was on the 4th floor, clean, no weird smell, lots of storage, wasn't noisy even though it faced Nobel. Loved the parking lot. Was the best parking I had for a while, even though the spot was a bit narrow. HOWEVER! One of my neighbors was effing noisy. She used loud bass early in the morning, she had parties that lasted past 2am... Was so pissed off that I skipped complex management and called police directly one night. Nonetheless, nothing was done, even after about 5-6 emails to management complaining about it. It remained like that until I moved away. Laundry was okay... They weren't the best but at least there's usually spare ones for me to use. Pool... Looked clean but try wearing a white swimming cap into it... When you get out you'll find a layer of some brownish slippery liquid on it... This was 3 years ago, it was still "clean" according to other comments on here. The only good thing is that everyone in the leasing office has great attitude. These apartments used to be a lot better 3 years ago that we moved here. For instance we used to have a security man and a clean pool. In the past year we experienced thief a couple of times to be exact 4 times. The pool is salty and i told them a couple of times in the past 6 month but no change. We also used to have free printing but now we have to bring our own paper and printer is out of service all the times. And rents are going up for at least $200 per year. read more

After living on the UCSD campus for two years, La Scala was a much better choice compared to many other off-campus places that my friends moved into. My first apartment was a 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom, which was VERY spacious. I especially appreciated the "closet" on the balcony for storage space. My second apartment was a studio, which was still quite spacious. No complaints about the quality of the apartments. I like that the pool and gym were in close proximity to where I lived and that the laundry room was located indoors so bad weather would not affect doing laundry. There is plenty of guest parking so visitors most likely do not have to park on the street. The doors and walls are very thin, but this was not usually a problem since I had quiet neighbors. The bigger issue is in the summertime if you live in an apartment facing the pool. Because the apartment complex is in a U-shape, all the screaming children and loud college students ECHO very clearly. The maintenance staff are also very friendly and good about fixing things in my apartment when they break. For example, my refrigerator randomly stopped working (by the fault of La Scala) so all the food inside spoiled. They applied credit to my next rent payment, but still... that should never happen. My son and his friend moved in a month ago coz they got accepted at UCSD we are really happy with the whole process all the staff are professionals and really nice....When we are looking for apartments sometime in June 2021 because of covid theres a lot of restrictions but only La Scala is the only one (Shelly) that did the tour in person and she was with us the whole time ...the other 3 places we saw that day they gave us papers and maps of the community and nobody went with us to look at the apartments and we feel like this the safest place all that saw that day... After nearly six months at La Scala, I can say that although it isn't perfect, it does it's very best, and earns a five-star review. Initially, what felt great about these apartment homes were the friendly and helpful service received by the leasing team, especially Zulay. She was very kind, real, and a pleasure to work with. The apartments themselves are at great value. Fairly modern, with updated appliances, decent amenities, and in great proximity to anything you need. The maintenance team is prompt and helpful in resolving any minor issue we've had thus far. We have had no major issues with neighbors, or employees of La Scala Apartments. Anything, whether it be a minor disturbance, is promptly addressed and resolved by the service team. No apartment home will be perfect, as so many factors are just beyond total control, but I appreciate that the team at La Scala does the best they can in making it a great place to live, and that's all that I can hope for. read more

I've lived here for the past few years, and to be honest La Scala has been pretty great. The good: plenty of guest parking, clean pool and gym, leasing company management, and security. It is close to the UCSD shuttle and MTS stops, within walking distance to the La Jolla Plaza & Vons Plaza. The bad: depending on who you get in the leasing office the individual can be super nice or incredibly rude. The ugly: noise. The walls here are incredibly thin. Overall recommendation: if rent is not obscenely high by the time you check this place out , La Scala is a good place to live for a UCSD student looking for housing. It isn't the best choice in terms of how pretty it is, but it serves its job for the students that need a place to live without a car. read more

Do not live here if you don´t want your apartment flooded on a regular basis and property destroyed due to water damage!!! This place has serious plumbing issues and the building is falling apart. There were 3 major plumbing emergencies in units we shared a wall with in the past year and a half, plus other smaller plumbing issues. None of them were because of rain, just maintenance issues.. On the most recent occasion, water leaked from our neighbor's unit and flooded our living room on Christmas Day. We had to move our furniture, have loud fans running 24/7, and live out of the bedroom for over a week, which included New Years. Management showed zero sympathy and was difficult to communicate with throughout most of the process.There is a psycho passive aggressive manager, Toni Stevens who sends weekly memos to residents threatening them weekly with eviction if they do not follow her rules to a T. She is no capable of managing all the issues the old building has and keeps sending also emails letting you know facilities has to enter into your apartment. Expect emails like this every 2 weeks! And if you complain they will retaliate and send you a letter of termination of tenancy. We were traveling for Spring Break and when we got back we found all our stuff in the bathroom and closet covered with water!!! Weekly emails notifying tenants of plumbing maintenance issues: "Our maintenance team found a leak in the garage and need to gain access to your unit tomorrow, Macr 12, 2019 after 9 AM to check for the origin of the leak. Please contact the leasing office with any questions or concerns. Once leak origin has been identified we will contact the unit with the leak and confirm details. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. La Scala Management" Make sure you bring a humidity thermometer with you go to check the apartment! Our apartment had a level of 86 humidity! Exhaust fans in the apartment do not run to the exterior so expect air condensation, high levels of humidity and a lot of MOLD GROWING!! New tenants are completely unaware because they do not tell them but all units in the have humidity and leaks causing mold specially all the units in the first floor The closer you are to the laundry room the more mold you will get in your apartment. They keep raising the rent $500 every year but this old smelly building with no insulation from external noise and cold air, really is not worth the price. It would get a bit better if they were to replace the old dirty carpets in the apartment with vinyl floor because we know for a fact most of the moisture, bacteria and mold growth is in those carpets. This plumbing issues coupled with the rudeness of the managers and the safety issues lately with homeless peeing in the garden makes me want to not recommend La Scala Apartments to anyone!!! read more

I've lived here 2.5 years and I've loved it. I'm a list person, so here's my list of Pros and Cons: PROS: Clean: The apartment (carpet, windows, blinds, etc) are all pretty close to spotless because of a deep clean between move-ins and annual complimentary carpet cleaning, which was a nice way to be welcomed. Great Management: I've always been treated extremely kindly by management. Obviously, kindness begets kindness, so be kind and they'll bend over backwards being kind in return. The new manager, Amber, has been honestly even more awesome. I had two really pressing issues come up recently that were not her fault, and she responded with such grace and compassion. Because the world is so tense right now, I did not expect her to be any different. But, she was a total breath of fresh air. I feel like she's "on my team" and not someone looking for trouble. Reasonable rent: The rent here is reasonable and I feel really happy with what I get for it. Very nicely maintained grounds, nice staff, attentive service on work orders, a clean, beautiful pool area, a great fitness room, an Amazon package hub, covered parking, locked entry, and nighttime security. Location: 10-15 min leisurely walk to the grocery store. Also, nearby movie theater (remember what those were like, in the Pre-COVID world? ;). Also, immediate access to two freeways (2-5 minutes). I love it here. I'll definitely be sticking around for a while. Oh yeah, also the CONS list: - Bathrooms have fan, but no window. Im not even sure where to begin. First and foremost, I would heed the advice of others when they say "DO NOT MOVE HERE". Paper thin walls/floors. Even if you're on the top floor, you still hear everything that goes on below you and on all sides of you. Forget about sleeping in, the construction site across the street takes care of that. If you're street facing on Nobel, your quality of life will drop dramatically. The back-up alarms on the construction vehicles are extremely loud and they never stop. It's like living with a 15 hour a day nonstop alarm clock. The only reprieve is to leave your apartment for the day. Also forget about working from home, studying, or anything you might need peace and quiet to concentrate for. Construction vehicles start at 6:30 in the morning and sometimes work into the night until 9pm. They're supposed to give you a day off but this noise continues Monday through Sunday. After the construction ends, the noisy neighbors kick up and they never sleep so you'll hear slamming of drawers and doors all throughout the night which will shake your entire apartment. Even with a noisy fan and a sound machine on full blast, they still can't drown out the noise. I haven't had a decent night's sleep in ages. Parking is atrocious and the parking spots are super tight. A consistent shower temp is nonexistent. I have to adjust the nozzle at every 2 minute intervals as to not be completely scalded. There's a strong smell of weed in the hallways on a regular basis. I've lived here for 3+ years and the ant problem has never been resolved even when they spray your apartment. They're always there. I've lived here far too long and as soon as my lease is up, I'm out of there. Go some place else. Your health and well being will thank you for it. read more

LA SCALA IS AMAZING!! It's such a beautiful place to live with honestly the best floor plans out of the other apartments nearby and everything is always so well maintained. The maintenance staff is awesome and always on top of everything. Amber is such an incredible property manager and always helps us with anything we need and is super responsive as well which is a huge plus. I've lived in San Diego for 5 years now and this was at the top of my most enjoyable places I lived. The room was incredible, view of the courtyard, sound of fountains, vaulted ceilings (fourth floor), great amenities, lounging by the pool in a cabana, and the Amazon locker are just a few features I remember that made my stay amazing. The manager (Amber) also always found a way to solve any issues I had concerning logistics, moving rooms (for preference), and ultimately on my move out. Honestly, only reason I moved out was due to purchasing a property - else I would have stayed here for the remainder of my time in San Diego. read more

The good: 1. Safe neighbourhood 2. Guard that walks around underground parking area at night to make sure everything is alright. 3. Within my house at least there was no weird smell and storage space for cabinets and stuff are plenty good. 4. Location is good, nearby marts and malls and UCSD bus line. The bad: 1. Walls on the sides are ok, but ceilings are thin and you can hear people walking above and below you from time to time. 2. I live on an upper floor and there is an overgrown palm tree that constantly hits my window as the wind blows 3. Hallway walls are peeling and carpets are old so there is a very slight odor but you get used to it over time 4. Underground car park has very very narrow lots, and is very dirty Note that this apartment only has a patrol/security in the night hours. None in the day time. Would I stay here again? Maybe. There are similarly priced apartments in the area that are slightly better maintained. Nevertheless being here already, there is nothing too good or too bad to shout about that it affects my experience living here - so Maybe. read more

I never write reviews but this just has to be said. DO NOT LIVE HERE!!! Been here for six months and what a nightmare!! Never had so many problems at any other places I've lived in. Cars aalways get broken into and vandalized as there's no gate to the garage and basically anyone can enter. A couple of times I came back from work and there was a car on my RESERVED tenants parking spot, had to park upstairs where there's barely any space to fit one car. Crazy upstairs neighbor keeps me up all night, he is so loud at night, keeps dropping things on the floor and drags them around, when he walks I feel like the ceiling is gonna fall. I go to sleep on the couch in my living room sometimes which is not comfortable and I don't get any sleep still. I told them about this problem multiple times and never fixed this problem. They said I can terminate the lease earlier if I want to. Horrible place!!! read more

My son is a student at UCSD who came home from studying abroad and needed housing mid-school year. No one near school was looking for a room-mate, so we got him his own one-bedroom. All the choices in La Jolla are $1800/mo or more but this property is by far the best value for the money. Great quiet, renovated clean apartment, beautiful grounds, HEATED pool, and most of all a great staff. I was very impresssed by their caring and fair business practices. Lived here for three years. DO NOT live here. There are ANTS everywhere, no matter what you do to prevent them or how many times pest control comes. They are infested in the apartment walls and infiltrate every room. We couldn't even leave uncovered food out for 30 minutes. Above all, the management staff are terrible. First of all, there are new employees almost weekly. So most of them don't know what they are doing (except Lisa, and Steve, who is now gone - they were very nice). The head Toni is rude, impudent, and completely uncaring. They pick a new rule to go crazy on each month, and police it like crazy, and then drop it and move on to their next ploy. Lastly, the parking spots are tiny, the apartment walls are thin, and the laundry machines are almost always broken. Despite this apartment being cheaper than other complexes in the area, I can assure you, it is not worth it to live here. read more

I love living here. Its very clean! The maintenance team is AMAZING! every time I need something fixed or help with anything, they are on it! They are super courteous and professional! They go out of their way to help me in fact, because i treat them with the respect that they deserve for their hard work here. The grounds are kept very nice, I see the gardeners often, they are also super nice! They always greet me with a smile. I have been here for 6 years and don't plan on leaving anytime soon. read more

They have a regular mail package thief that have been stealing for almost two years. I have had 4 packages stolen and they refuse to do anything about it other than telling you they can't do anything about it. The gym is so off, the equipments are outdated and in really bad and dirty shape. It is unbelievably noisy and the noise insulation of the building is just bad. I live in the first floor and even people living at the second floor above our apartment is just walking, it feels like they are slamming things on the ground constantly. Thank god I am moving out from here. read more
