After being herded like cattle through the majority of the Vatican Museum all my wife and I wanted was a quiet place with gluten free options where we could sit down and talk about the experience. We did not expect to find a wonderful place so close without a hoard of people but were thrilled regardless. La Soffitta offers essentially every menu item gluten free which you don't see everywhere. We ordered the gluten free gnocchi and a gluten free salami pizza. The pizza was way more then one person should eat and was delicious. Being from Chicago we have tried numerous gluten free pizzas and always expect a less than tasty crust but at La Soffitta I could have made a meal with just the crust. The salami was slightly spicy but was super savory. The gluten free gnocchi was also really good. I had some non-gluten free gnocchi a couple of days ago that was really good and this was really close to matching that. Obviously the gnocchi didn't puff like real gnocchi but it was well worth what we paid. Finish off the meal with a beer and it was a perfect late lunch. The atmosphere is really cute here. It is in a basement and does not have outdoor seating but because of the piazza close by there is a nice level of background noise to allow for private conversation. The service was excellent and the next time I'm in Rome I will definitely be going back there. read more

Gluten sensitive in heaven! it's pretty tough finding restaurants in Rome with gluten-free options, but Yelp helped me find this delightful ristorante. We ate the GF spaghetti with clams and the margherita pizza. Wow, that was the best GF pizza ever- just like the real thing but even more so because it's Italian. I wish they could figure this out in the States. Now I can have fond memories of Roma when it comes to enjoying the cuisine. read more

The waiter went from friendly to rude/angry and we don't understand why. We needed to ask a few questions about the menu since one person in our party is vegan. Our friend asked if the chef could make a rigatoni with marinara and our server begrudgingly said he could. When I ordered a vegetarian dish (Pasta Fagiole) from the menu, the server told me it's too hot to eat soup and I must order something else. So I ordered the same rigatoni with marinara. To make it easier, we all ordered the same. After our first course, the waiter walked passed our table and literally threw a fork on our table! We finished and poltely asked for our bill. 35 minutes passed and still no bill after asking several times. Finally we got up from the table to pay the cashier without our bill. Came as they advertise a gluten free menu and they delivered. Every item on the menu can be made gluten free and just a few blown cos from St Peter Square. We paid about 60€ for a starter warm Caprese salad, bottle of local red house wine, veal, and two GF pasta dishes. All very well done and friendly staff with good English. read more

Went for late lunch during week. Service spectacularly pleasant -- Eddy, our waiter was lots of fun and very helpful. Very pleasant old-school atmosphere. Only a little bit more expensive than most places, which was surprising given location right next to Vatican at Piazza Risorgimento. Quality quite good, again surprising given location. The gluten free offerings were extensive -- everything on the menu had GF equivalents, and there were more GF desserts than non-GF desserts. Two of us had pizza, and the crust was perfect. The GF crust was delightful. Some original items on menu, pizza with truffles, etc. If you are looking for a fun place to eat near Vatican, and don't want to get fleeced, this is the spot. read more

When I was first planning our honeymoon to Italy I was a bit nervous due to my celiac disease and had resigned myself to watching my husband eat all the pizza and pasta while I ate some salad. To my surprise, Rome has this figured out (at least the gf pizza) better than New York. When we first entered this restaurant we were warmly greeted and ushered to a table. Our server explained all of the daily specials to us in English and was very nice. I ordered a gf margherita pizza and gf pasta carbonara. Loved it! It was the best gf pizza I have ever had and I was super happy with our choices. The pizza crust tasted like how I remember real pizza crust tasting and the sauce was amazing. My husband had bucatini amatriciana and was impressed. We also had a yummy gf tiramisu for dessert. Overall definitely go here! read more

Tom Cruise was here! I ordered a pizza that has ham, olives and egg. The outer crust is quite crispy and the crust taste is quite unique, seems to have a bit of wine in it, overall the pizza is good and its good value too. Would come again next time read more

It's nice to know there are restaurants that serve gluten-free food. The gluten-free ravioli were impeccable. But the pizzas (my wife had with gluten, me without) were mushy. On a recent visit to Rome I stopped by this restaurant because they have gluten free options and the reviews were good. I'm not sure why all the raving reviews because that was definitely not my experience at this restaurant. I ordered the caprese salad, a rice ball, a pasta dish, and a glass of the house red wine. All of it was very underwhelming and did not have much taste or flavor. I come from a huge Italian family so maybe I'm spoiled when it comes to Italian food, but the flavors weren't even there. The caprese salad was just tomato and mozzarella, nothing else. The rice ball and pasta was also very bland and seasoned poorly. When I go to a restaurant I would like the food to taste better than what I can cook at home or else what's the point. There was also a worker vomiting (very loudly) in the bathroom for 10 minutes while People were eating. I almost wanted to be sick myself and actually left feeling pretty nauseous. read more

By the time we leave Rome we will have eaten at La Soffitta 4 days in a row. It is that good. We must eat strictly gluten-free, so this restaurant with its dedicated kitchen was a true find for our family. The wait staff, particularly, Wasim, were amazing. We felt surrounded by dear friends as we consumed the most fabulous traditional Roman food (pasta, pizza, dolce, and more). At our request, Wasim chose a delicious wine to accompany our meal. Mary, the owner/ pastry chef was warm and welcoming even preparing a special dessert for us. She shared how she sources only natural ingredients fresh from the farmers. Yet, the prices were modest. The service at this place was absolutely awful. We (my wife, son and I) came in at dinner time based on Yelp reviews and were seated quickly. It took 15 minutes for anyone to notice we were not given menus. Then, after the menus were delivered, we were again left alone for far longer than it would take anyone to make a decision. When we ordered our dinners, Christian (our illustrious server) said he would bring us a wine list. Meanwhile, two tables near us who had been seated after we were were given wine and a first course. We were sitting at a table with a bottle of water. And we remained there. Waiting. With no wine list, the water nearly gone. Then, my son's Margherita pizza came. It was a perfectly acceptable plate, but we still hadn't seen a wine list. Christian apologized, and acted like he was too terribly busy to bring us a piece of paper. My son dug in. Christian came back with my wife's risotto, which again was good, but not worth writing home about. Finally, the wine came. I was left waiting for another 5 minutes for my dish, which was to be steak slices with balsamic and spinach and mozzarella. My family was half way through their dinner before mine came, which was fine, but when mine arrived, I was very disappointed. It was well-cooked steak slices in an absolute puddle of balsamic reduction. No one could eat that much balsamic. What's worse, the spinach was cold and its mozzarella was hardened as a result of sitting out. So, we were done. We had a passable meal at an okay price and when Christian came to pick up our plates he had the audacity to act like I owed him an explanation for how little of my steak I ate. "Signeur, what's wrong?" he demanded. I demurred. "It's fine," I said. He walked away honestly rolling his eyes at me with only two plates, leaving my son's pizza plate, which had of course been there the longest. We continued to wait, expecting to be offered coffee or a dessert. That never actually happened. We asked someone else for the bill who told Christian. He came over and said that she did not understand English so well, so what was it that we wanted? I said we just wanted the bill and he again ROLLED HIS EYES, and said, "Of course, just the bill, yes." We waited another five minutes, grabbed a menu off the adjoining table and added up what we felt we owed. We left the amount on the table and walked out. We have eaten at some of the finest restaurants in many countries, my wife and I have worked as servers in many restaurants, and we have never experienced anything like this. DO NOT GO!!! Our group of 6 just dined at this restaurant. While the food was very tasty, the service was beyond horrible. When we arrived and the waiter greeted us he said he was having a bad day. We should have left then. From not serving our wine or soda, to not bringing one of the meals, it was just terrible. He never apologized or said a kind word. Avoid this place! read more

Loved eating here for casual dining in Rome. I have a gluten allergy. The pizza here was great -- best GF pizza I have found -- and the house desert. Both GF. Also had lentil soup. We ended up eating lunch here two days in a row. Our waiter Christian was the best! Super helpful and friendly. I do not speak Italian but it did not matter.
