All right place, but kind of a tourist trap. They have gluten free pizzas and pasta available, and I sincerely think that is why this place has so many customers. It's good too (the pizza), but 2 euros extra for it? Seriously? They also had gluten free beer, but being on a budget I skipped it. The pizza itself was quite delish, good crust and overall taste. I ordered the capricciosa with extra rocket salad. The ham was good, but there were too much mushroom and the artichokes were so hard it was difficult to chew them properly. The waiters here are working their asses off, and no smiles are given at any time. This is sadly the same all over Rome, but I still keep hoping I will meet a nice waiter soon. In three days, I still haven't met one. Oh and another thing - if decide to go here to eat, do not under any circumstances order anything other than pizza if you're really hungry. Gluten free and truly delicious! I had the gnocci with mozzarella and tomato, my dad had the (non gf) linguine with mushrooms and pecorino. It was such a delight to have gnocci again. The linguine was spectacular. For dessert, we had a creme brulee (gf) and a Roman specialty chocolate and cheese dessert (non gf). House red with dinner was very tasty. Service was so Italian - thanks, Alessandro! We felt very comfortable and could easily stay and overeat. The price was unreal - we both overstimated the bill by 15-20 euros. And the restaurant was filled with foreigners and locals, including the local police. (In so Cal, you can count on a restaurant being good if the cops eat there). Ambiance and setting was great for lunch or dinner. Plenty of room for large groups. The food was pretty good but I wasn't a fan of the veal as I thought it was too thin and fatty. Otherwise all other entrees and desserts were wonderful. We started with the suppli and I enjoyed that you can order the number you wish so we only got one each. We loved this place! We stopped by here in a hurry on our way to the Roma game. The very understanding and super helpful wait staff completely won us over! He pointed to the Roma jersey hanging on the wall. He brought our food in 5 minutes, I kid you not. And the food was fresh and delicious. They had nice single-use bibs for the children and made their food as per our request. I highly recommend this place! read more

My hotel recommended La Soffita for a simple pasta carbonara because my family was jet lagged except for me and they needed to sleep. The hotel called the restaurant knowing they were fantastic for gluten-sensitive people. I walked five minutes to the restaurant to get the pasta and the owner himself met me with a big smile. There were many people in the restaurant and they had 6-8 gluten free desserts in a display case that I would love to try (very GF friendly). I walked past 10 restaurants were no one was eating on a Saturday night, so I was pleased to see this place almost full. It has a small sign next to the door, so you must look for it. A bit of a tourist trap (and a bit rough around the edges with dated decor and a basement style restaurant) - and excellent GF pizza. Honestly, the pizza was as good gluten-filled pie. The cheeses are super fresh and the crust is a good split between a chewy northern Italian style and a thin Neapolitan brick oven crust. Mmmmm. First day it was great. Our waiter was great. The wine was great. The gluten free gnocchi was good (notice I didn't say great. I don't lie. It was good. Wasn't the bed I'd ever had though.)it was a nice spot AND I got to have gluten free beer. I hadn't had beer in so long. The icing on the cake was the creme brûlée. Gluten-free options are great! The pizza is the best I've had. The crust was chewy, almost like real pizza. Appetizers and dessert were delicious too. We ate here twice while we were in Rome. I ended up ordering two meals, so I could eat the leftover pizza for breakfast or lunch. Found this place near the Vatican City where there aren't a whole lot of non-tourist traps to eat at. Truly a locals joint, we stumbled upon it because of the collection of local awards posted in stickers on their door. The first night we ordered the Renovatio Frito Misto. It was light, airy, not greasy, included eggplant, haricot verts, arrancini, and some other delightfully fried things. It was enough to share and did not feel greasy and heavy after eating. Next, my husband ordered the neopolitan pizza and I had the traditional roman pasta that is shaped like spaghetti but it's hollow, with tomato sauce and some crispy fried pancetta or some other type of meat. The meal was delicious if not a bit salty. My husband lived in naples for several years and we visited naples on this trip and had a LOT of pizza. He said it was very good =) We returned a second night. I had a delicious spelt pizza with tomato sauce, mozzerella cheese, sausage and chicory root tops. It was AMAZING. I enjoyed the hell out of that pizza AND it gave me the much needed veggies which are a bit scarce in roma in the winter. Sis-in-law had the cappricone pizza which was good. Husband had a pasta dish that was good. Everything was delicious. It was a little on the salty side at time, but overall very good. read more

Had a solid lunch here. Service was good, if not great. Appetizers were good. Not outstanding but the rice balls and zucchini flowers were very tasty. My gnocchi was good, the sauce was decent but was saved by the texture and taste of the gnocchi themselves. Don't expect good service here if you're an American. We were ignored for a good 20 minutes after arrival, while locals who's came AFTER us were attended to first. We ordered bread which never came. We requested plates so that we could place our pizza on them like civilized individuals but that was also ignored, so we had to eat them off napkins instead. Our pizza was not cut by the server, and we were forced to make due ourselves with a butter knife. After the fact, we noticed that our server did manage to cut pizza for a local couple. Our requests for more wine were repeatedly unheeded. Worst of all, the food was only average. If you're a local, best case scenario, you will be treated well. My husband and I, who are both gluten free, truly enjoyed this quiet place after braving the throngs of people visiting the Sistine Chapel. He is also allergic to corn, and although he could not have the pasta and the pizza had some corn in it, the waiter checked everything with the chef before putting it in for order. We enjoyed the pizza (he took a Benadryl so he would not have a reaction) and we also enjoyed a gluten free tiramisu after lunch. A wonderful place, we will visit again. read more

The best carbonara and the best service I've had since being in Italy, the chef even came out and we were able to tell him how much we enjoyed our meal. I am from NYC, as is my wife. We love pizza, with my wife being Celiac the past 10 years have been a challenge. Luckily, I was not scared away by the review from Wisconsin. Maybe he expected Brat on his pizza? The Gluten Free Pie was on par with my wife's favorite GF in NYC, the very popular Risottoria. My Margarita (gluten) was great. It could easily be served in the west village and hold its own along with the stiff competition on Bleeker Street. I really loved the sauce, very fresh. My life loved the sauce and cheese, and wishes the bottom of the crust stayed crispier. A common issue with GF Pizza. But overall she was very happy. The Prosciutto w/melon was wonderful. The reason I do not give this place 5 stars is the staff pushes a bit to hard, and you can tell they are trying to up sell tourists. Just not the amazing service you find in some of these other restaurants in Italy. If you are Celiac, you want to come here, and your companions will be happy too. The only better GF pizza my wife has ever had is in Milan. Le Specialita. If you go to Milan, you must go there! This place is great, your going to the Vatican anyway! Its right across the square! Ok so I honestly hate the fact that I have to give this place one star because honestly I would give zero. The food was very disappointing. We ordered cod as an appetizer and it was not fully cooked. The oxtail dish has no meat at all, I mean I was served two bones and I had oxtail recently in Spain and other countries and there is always some meat on the bones. The Lobster pasta came out with just lobster shells (no lobster meat- what a rip off for $20 euro). The pizza & calzone we ordered came out last after everyone in our group had finished their entire dishes. There was a very large Italian party that arrived after us (and after we placed our order) who received all of their food before us (including their pizzas and calzones). They had the entire wait staffs attention. We very much got the impression that Americans are treated as second class citizens at this establishment which is sad because Rome is such a diverse city. We asked for or check and waited over a half hour for the check and each time the waiter would just roll his eyes at us when we asked. My recommendation is do not visit this establishment if you look like you are not from the country. read more

We read several great reviews but our experience did not match such proclamations. The roasted Lamb which was ordered was later told they didn't have only to produce the stewed Lamb within aeconds that was all bones and no meat with 2 day old cold potatoes. Quite disappointing. The Grilled Chicken Caesar was awful. Bits of chicken with piles of croutons and colorless chopped up lettuce. The worst ever. The sliced steak with Spinach was missing the Spinach. The Gnocchi and the Calamari were ok. Hopefully for their sake this was just one bad night. The locals get preferred seating and tourists are placed in cramped seating. Delicious and fresh! Ordered pasta from the daily menu which was fresh tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms....so good. The diavoletto pizza was great as well - they all taste good though to me. La Renovatio Soffita is in an unassuming building without any awning to identify its existence. But once we found it, we discovered it's tasty offerings both regular and gluten free. We had fried appetizers which they made entirely without gluten..they were so hospitable that they made the Roma favorite supli (sp?) just for me because I had not had it since arriving in Roma. My gluten free pasta was great, as was my party's meals. What shined just as much as the food was the friendly, humorous servers. They were some of the friendliest we encountered in Roma. Convenient location coming from Vatican City. As mentioned, they have a fantastic selection for gluten free. I had a GF pizza while my boyfriend had a regular one. We both enjoyed it for the most part - maybe it's just the style in general, but I would have preferred my pizza to have been a bit more cooked on the bottom. The middle of the pizza was just a little too soft. The crust was perfect, though, and the toppings were delicious. It took forever to find this place even using our Yelp and Maps apps on our phones. We realized after about ten minutes that we had already passed it. Maps has it a street over, where a museum or shop actually is. It's a non-descript entrance where you go down from street level into the basement. We were seated right away but it seemed like it took forever to get our food. I asked the waiter for a recommendation and ended up ordering the gluten-free pasta with prawns. My husband had a platter of buffalo mozzarella and parma ham, and a latte. As we waited, and waited, and waited, I saw waiters going by with bread baskets. I asked the waiter if the bread basket was gluten free and he said no but he could order me some. He brought me a slice of toast, one side practically burned and the other side raw. It was cold and not at all yummy. My husband's latte never came and he had to re-order it. When our food finally came, my pasta was completely uncooked. I understand gluten-free pasta is never going to taste like real pasta, and I understand the concept of "al dente." This was just uncooked pasta. To their credit, the waiter sent it back and they remade the dish for me. I had to wait but didn't mind at that point. It did taste good overall. I am not sure if I would eat there again - if I lived in Rome I would probably go again to check out the gluten-free pizza. read more

Italian from California and Gluten intolerant. Raised on Nonna's homemade pasta and bread, I know good pasta and finding good gluten free food is quite challenging. The location is good just easy to miss if you're not paying attention - walking down the stairs felt mystical but inviting. The charcoal pizza was recommeded "good for the gas" which I just have to laugh at. Had good flavor but was not for me. But then, I tried the gluten-free pasta special which was out of this world great; Fettuccine noodle, mushrooms, wine sauce, and more... recommend this to gluten eating folks! I tried to go back the next night for a late dinner but found they closed at 10pm. I dined at a few other establishments but found that this restaurant had the best pasta, service... and the most darling waiter - Christian.
