Our daughters (2 and 4 yrs old) have lessons down at Santa Monica High School Pool. They absolutely love it and look forward to it every week! They make progress really quickly here compared to other classes we've experienced - the focus is on getting comfortable in the water and actually learning to SWIM. Rather than just playing around. They still have fun though, building up their confidence and reaching new milestones. The coaches are generally warm and friendly and have built good relationships with our daughters, so trust and knowledge develops week-to-week. The one-on-one nature of the classes means they feel safe, and learn quickly. The staff are super communicative and quick to respond to any email queries or issues. They always inform us if the usual coach isn't going to be available and provide a stand-in. And they are flexible to our needs when we have to miss lessons and need to find a make-up class slot. I would absolutely recommend these classes, if you want your kids to genuinely learn to 'swim' and build comfort and confidence in the water. and have done to friends several times. read more

I had a really great experience with my kids classes! Everyone's super nice and friendly! Venice's spot is perfect for winter classes cause the water is warm like a bath, but it's residential, so is not good for loud or crying kids. Santa Monica location is my favorite, but it could get chilly in winter, so gear up if you pick that location. read more

Coach Clover has been great about working with our daughter to get her to the next level in preparation for swim team. This review is long overdue. We've been coming to LA Surf and Swim since my older daughter was two. Throughout our experience, we have had fantastic coaches. We've had Danny for the past two years and he is stellar. Danny is patient, kind and really understands how to channel your child's energy. He finds ways to connect with each of my girls from sing-alongs in the pool to mermaid tails. During the pandemic, he has taken all safety precautions and made swim class each week feel normal. We couldn't be more grateful to Danny and the love of swimming my girls have both developed because of his guidance! read more

I love LA Surf and Swim! It took me 7 years to find them and so glad I did. All of the instructors are great and because the kids go on an ongoing basis they are making a ton of progress. We are so fortunate to have found LA Surf & Swim. Coach Adrienne is the swim whisperer and we are so thankful for her! She has an incredible personality and is fantastic with children. If a certain approach is not working she reevaluates on the fly to figure out another way to teach the lesson. My son looks forward to his swim classes because not only are they effective, but they are very fun! Adrienne got my son swimming in 2 weeks of intensive. My child had no prior swim training. I didn't know this was even a possibility! They are flexible, kind, courteous, affordable and professional. We have also worked with Chris to schedule and discuss progress. He is fantastic! Kind, professional, and very knowledgeable. I've had a few questions about beach safety classes/ coaching which we want to look into once my son is a little bit more of a stronger swimmer. Lastly, all the coaches I have seen at our location are very friendly. I have chatted with Paula a few times and I really think she is great. I was feeling pretty bad that my 6yo son hadn't learned to swim. He wouldn't enter a pool without his floaties, even if I was holding him. He didn't like to have a drop of water touch his face, so any splashes in a pool he was in were not acceptable. I felt I hadn't done my job as a parent, and worried it would take years before he made any progress. Just to give it a try, I took him to LA Surf and Swim, with low expectations. I figured he'd hate it and it would be a waste of time. I was shocked that he had fun in his first lesson (even though he cried once after his head went under water), and he actually wanted to go back for a second lesson. He ended up looking forward to his swim class every week! The school has figured out a ton of games that kids enjoy, that also teach them how to swim without even realizing it. It's really amazing. The teachers are patient and nice with the kids. Five months later, my son now will jump in a pool, swim under water, and can basically swim on his own (though he's still a bit unsure about swimming on his own without swim fins). I'm completely amazed by his progress, and couldn't be more satisfied with LA Surf and Swim. To me, the change is a miracle. I highly recommend them. read more

I'm disappointed because I believe they have too many kids swimming at the same time. Running in to each other and the kids bumping their heads on the other end of the pool with no one to stop it. I feel like they care more about the bottom line ($$$) than the children! For example, I have 3 kids going to their school and pay monthly for them to go. So, today my 2 year old school woke up with a fever of 102.7. I cancelled the class as soon as I checked his temperature & asked if they could reschedule him they said it would be $10 to reschedule a makeup because I didn't give them enough notice! Nothing but a great experience. All teachers I have seen are exceptional with kids. My son is a bit of a 'negotiator' and tends to want to get off the target of instruction. The instructor keeps the instruction upbeat and on target. Nice facility - great instruction. Sometimes you get cut short 2 minutes - which I know doesn't sound like much - but hey - it's only a 20 minute class altogether. Unrelated to the school - parking is kinda a stinker. But where isn't it. The old man across the street on the corner somehow has gotten a red zone painted, handicapped zone painted, has no parking for street cleaning until 11:30 on Tuesday s and now is asking no one to park there either - yeesh! He must know somebody at the City! read more

We could not be happier with LA surf and swim. Our 4 year old daughter went from not willing to get a drop of water on her face and head to full on swimming and diving to the bottom of the pool in the matter of a few months (we were doing 20 min lessons once a week). All the teachers have been great and it was actually very helpful to have different coaches since they all added their own personal ways of teaching and encouraging our daughter to make progress. I also want to comment on how great they have adapted during covid to ensure we all felt safe. Unfortunately we are moving away from the area, otherwise we would continue going for a while. I am an adult working on ocean swimming, stroke mechanics, becoming more comfortable in the ocean, and now surfing. Syd has completely transformed how I feel about the ocean and my comfort in the water. I've always known how to swim but was never confident in the ocean and lacked good swim technique overall. After about two months with Syd, I now find navigating waves thrilling rather than terrifying and can confidently swim laps for 45 mins in the pool. I can't thank Syd enough for bringing this new joy to my life. Syd gave me my first surfing lesson today, and now I'm even more hooked! He is not only extremely skilled, but also very attentive, great at explaining concepts clearly, and is an all around awesome guy. LA surf and swim has been amazing. We have been going a year and a half and my daughter loves her lessons. They are all toddler whisperers and know how to make swimming fun! Even when my daughter is having a more spirited day, they are incredibly patient with her and make the swimming instruction easy. They have many props, toys and equipment that engage the kids in a new way each time. This is a review for the swimming lessons, which are held at a private residence in the Mar Vista area. Pro's: - Flexible scheduling. LA Surf & Swim has an online calendar where you can check availability and schedule lessons. You aren't bound to one day of the week and time, though that's an option if you'd like - Good student to teacher ratio - Reasonable rates for private lessons - Pool is under a canopy which provides shade in the summer. Toys are on the deck for siblings who aren't swimming - Parents do not have to go into the pool with the child - Instructors knowledgeable and friendly, with one exception below Con's: - The "open house" format doesn't allow for much consistency, which can be an issue for some kids. The child shows up for the lesson, wades into the water and the nearest available teacher grabs them. The instructors don't seem to have a set schedule so you could have a different teacher each lesson - With the above scheduling format it's possible for your child to be in a class with kids that are nowhere near his/her age. Teachers adapt to the child's skill level so it isn't a big deal -- but my 5 year old was in a class with 1 year olds, which wasn't much fun. - After the lesson there's zero time for free play. You have the lesson and get booted out, which is fairly standard for swim lessons. City pools have open swim, though, so free time can be dovetailed after lessons if you schedule properly. - Most of the teachers here are great, with one exception. My kid was excited and wiggly during the first lesson and the teacher threatened to make him sit on the deck where it was cold. Seemed a bit harsh. This school gets rave reviews and was recommended to me by a friend. It was not a good fit for us, but I do believe it's a good school. read more

This swimming school is OUTSTANDING. For the past two years I tried three other swimming schools in the area and saw very little improvement in my two kids. But oh Lord, in a little over two months of weekly classes in this school (9 in total) my daughter was swimming from one side of the pool to the other in all four styles!! Of course, they are now working on perfecting the styles, but she is now a confident swimmer. My son, 4, is already learning freestyle and back stroke. Some instructors are great and other not so great. You can not pick or request a particular person, which means you have to leave your child's instructor up to chance. I had one great experience and two so-so. The instructor could be more aware of how many lessons a student had taken, any fears and try tailor their teaching style to accommodate different learning needs. read more
