Staff was great! Unfortunately food was terrible. It was a last minute decision as we were walking by. I should have looked up reviews on this place before we decided to go in. I returned my chicken mole it was so terrible. I'm pretty sure the mole Sauce was from a jar. I didn't order anything else since I was not feeling confident of what had been served to me. So I dined on chips and salsa after I returned my meal. Hubby wasn't to impressed with his fajitas said it was edible but worst he ever had. Lacked main ingredient which is meat. We held a class reunion of 60 people here yesterday afternoon. Both the Owner Prabin and Manager Lalo were very accommodating, attending to our special requests with smiles. The wait staff was attentive and very friendly as well. The appetizer selection we had chosen beforehand were all served fresh and hot. The 2 different flavored chicken wings, taquitos, flautas, potato skins and poppers were all delicious not to mention the fantastic margaritas. The food is standard Mexican fare with an extensive menu. We only had nachos and drinks, which were okay. We mainly came to see the band, Vinyl Edge, next door, which was great fun. Worked with Prabin to have catering done for my baby shower. He was very responsive to all my questions. Everyone RAVED about the food, especially the cheese enchiladas! Everything was absolutely delicious. Received lots of questions about where the food was from. Prices are very fair and the entire staff was so helpful and kind through our ordering and pick-up process. NEVER AGAIN. Never. I'm trying to figure out how they are open. Nothing has taste. Nothing. The chips have no salt the salsa taste like I should dip mozzarella sticks in it. The bean dip is runny n again no flavor. Had dinner at La Tapatia last week. They do not deserve even a star. I had the tacos and my husband a meat dish with rice and beans. Chips and salsa with bean dip was decent. Our waiter seemed nice enough, but while he spent most of his time making sure the "regulars" were taken care of, he barely checked in on us. The meat on my tacos tasted old and tough, the al pastor meat was some nondescript meat and the seasoning was off...whatever it was, it was not al pastor. Then after we left I told my husband I would not go back to this restaurant ever again. He proceeded to tell me that that his meat dish was COLD!!!! I was so livid, I wanted to go back there and get my money back. Hubby is non-confrontational, so he said to leave it. Lastly, their bathrooms smell and look absolutely disgusting. Place was recommended by many. Staff here are friendly and made the birthday boy smile with a big sombrero and a happy birthday song, but the food wasn't quite what we expected. The tamales was hard needed another minute or two on the steamer. The hot plate fajitas smell nice, but the meat was too try. Great service for sure. The staff is really nice and they pay attention to how you're doing. The food was solid. I got the taco and enchilada combo. It's a lot of food. The taco was good. They put a lot of meat and it was topped with pico de gallo, guacamole, and cheese. I could have done without the pico de gallo had I known it was going to be on there but it was still good. They were very very generous with the amount of cheese they put on top. The chicken enchilada was delicious. The meat was flavorful and moist. The beans and rice were excellent. Lots of flavor and both cooked well. The ambiance is a little dark and dated but they keep the place clean which makes up for things. read more

While visiting downtown Martinez, we visited La Tapatia Mexican Cuisine: Martinez on Main Street for a snack. Roberto was behind the bar, and he's one nice guy! I mean, look at that smile and happy face! We wanted some guacamole, but I'm not a fan of pico in my guac. Not a problem. Roberto radioed to the ladies in the kitchen, and they made us a fresh batch, sans pico. It was a mountain of guac, and it was fresh and delicious! I know where I will be heading when I get a guacamole craving. I ordered a chimichanga and enchilada combo dinner for later that night and the next day, and both items were really good. The chimichangas had a perfect meat-to-beans ratio and was loaded with cheese; it even heated well in the air fryer the next day. The enchilada was really tasty; I would order the same combo again. I also got some tortilla soup that was loaded with veggies and very tasty. I used to go to La Tap for lunch pre-pandemic, and I would always get the delish shrimp salad! I love horchata; they have a heavenly horchata, which was pretty heavenly to me. Tequila, Kahlua, and horchata was a perfect combo. The specialty cocktails were $10.50, which was reasonable. The bean dip, salsa, and chips were free at the bar, and the busser kept them coming, which was so nice. They have daily specials, family deals, and drink specials. I wish I had taken photos of the specials they had on some of the walls. I did include photos of the menus, which include some of the specials. The Food was great as usual. They started charging a Back of the House Fee of 3%. That would go to workers like cooks , dish washers etc etc . They did take it off when requested . A restaurant should put it in the price of the meal. Call me protesting against fees If a business man should absorbed fees like this in the price of the food. It is the companies responsibility to provide a wage for their employees. What happened to the good old days when you had a minimum wage instead of a living wage . These low pay jobs were always for the purpose of getting young people and to the marketplace and learning how to walk and work they were never met for somebody to stay there for a lifetime even if we chose to go back to the old times of a minimum wage. Very bland and just meh. Locals like to talk this place up, but I've been here three times, ordered mostly the same thing each time and was not impressed each time. The chips were stale and had no flavor and the food was just mediocre and skimpy. ** The following review reflects my dining experience prior to the shelter-in-place order currently in effect. ** Listen, I had no expectations of what the dining scene would be like in Martinez, the county seat of Contra Costa and a city I had never visited before my recent visit to the Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline. I looked for the highest rated restaurant on Yelp, and this standard-grade Mexican restaurant showed up high on the list. So after taking a walk on the winding George Miller Trail, I drove here and took my chances on a menu I had never seen before. Meanwhile, I started to fill up on the complimentary tortilla chips, still hot from the deep fryer, served in a traditional molcajete, and accompanied by salsa and cheese-topped frijoles (photo: https://bit.ly/2wNw7xc). I was excited to see menudo on the menu, but I uncharacteristically demurred and went for the $13.25 Mexican Salad which as it turned out, was likely just as indulgent. Second time back since COVID. Sat in bar, not crowded. Received drinks and their amazing chips and dip. The bean dip was off. It Is not the same. No flavor, no enchilada sauce, coagulated before I even started. The wine was bad. The beer was flat. Paid and left. I don't know if I will go back. You can improve your customer service. My son and I walked into this mostly empty restaurant at 1:00 pm. There was one group seated at a table. Though a sign in front said to wait to be seated, which we did, no one acknowledged us at all. When we first walked in there was someone behind the bar. He looked at us and turned back to what he was doing. He could easily have said that someone would be with us shortly, good afternoon - something! We saw three workers and not one person acknowledged us. After standing there for more than 10 minutes without being acknowledged it appeared that no one was interested in serving us, so my son said, "let's go!" I will never go back and will encourage my friends not to patronize this restaurant either. Just plain Rude! read more

Our server was attentive and checked on us frequently even though there was a party of 10 and table of six in the dining room. What impressed us most was the new owner, Harry, was going from table to table introducing himself and asking how everything was and if we had any suggestions. This place has been there forever and it looks like it. I was there with a large party. We had to wave down the waiter to take our drink orders and people I was with said we would order when the rest of our party arrived. Only 1 waiter, place started to get full. Witnessed people waiting at door for 10 minutes, food runner and busser not acknowledging them before being greeted by the owner casually strolling around in his two-piece suit. The waiter was sweating bullets (poor thing) but no one checked on us and all of us arrived, had been sitting there for over 30 minutes. I watched the waiter whizz past us several times, getting other tables orders and not bothering to notice that we all had arrived or that our drinks & chips were low, no chips and no food order. Both owner and waiter didn't bother to ask how we were doing etc. I felt sorry for the waiter. There were too many tables for 1 person. I had to leave without eating. When I complained, both owner and waiter said we told them more guests coming. I said "yeh. 30 minutes ago we said that and you didn't check on us". Customers shouldn't have to wave down the employees or the owner to check on them, and tips are for the type of service where the waiter keeps an eye on the table. I dined in at La Tapatia over the weekend as a central meeting place with a few friends. My favorite part of this restaurant is that when you are dining in and ordering a meal, you not only get free chips and salsa, but you also get a yummy cheesy bean dip! I ordered one of their more popular dishes, the #1 combination with a taco and enchilada. The taco was great, but the carne asada enchilada had nothing other than meat inside it - no cheese, so sauce, just meat. Other than that, I really enjoyed my meal. Good bean dip and salsas. *Plus one star.* Unsure why the food costs twice as much (or more!) as any other Mexican joint. A single, basic crispy taco is $5.25. That's one taco, nothing else. *Minus one star.* Servers are absolutely fantastic, though, and are the reason we go back. Love those guys. *Plus one star.* Owner raises prices every 6 months... yet no staff gets raises. Instead owners proudly charge customers an extra 3% to "retain kitchen staff." When receiving my order didnt handle it with care, she literally shoveled it to me and shut the window. The reciept in my bag isnt even my receipt. Not sure why the food cost so much here. I don't recommend going to this restaurant if you're ever visiting Martinez Ca. When going to this restaurant I thought I'd be satisfied after a long day of not eating, I ended up going to sleep hungry that night. I ordered a torta, when ordering it the lady called it a Mexican sandwich so I asked what was in it and she was very rude but still answered. I was interested in what it was going to taste like so I ordered it, when receiving it it just had a nasty taste and my meat was completely cold.
