The food was just OK, but the check made me angry. We had a group of 9 people for dinner. When the check came, I noticed that they had added a 20% tip because of a large party. That's standard so, OK. The server didn't mention it though. I gave my credit card to pay and when the copy came back to sign, it had an extra line for ANOTHER tip with a helpful section to calculate 18%, 20% etc. This total included the other tip that was added, but did not list it. When I said to the server "wasn't the tip already added in?" she looked kind of guilty and admitted that it was. I feel like this was really deceptive and I won't go back to a restaurant that I feel was trying to get me to double tip by deceptive practices. If you go there, be forewarned. read more

Overall not bad for a place that serves pre made Cuban food. At least that means the food gets served up quickly. I had the Cuban sandwich and it was good. Tried this place again hoping it got better. Big mistake. As usual all of the food was cold. We ordered garbanzo bean soup, an arroz con pollo and a churrasco steak. Everything cold. When I mentioned it to the waitress she just responded "OK" and walked away. I don't think she understood English. The flan was a strange orange color and gritty, not creamy at all. The supposedly caramel syrup on it had no flavor at all. The cafe con leche was full of espresso film and residue assuming that they don't properly tap out the part of the machine with the coffee in it before making a cup. While visiting the area recently, we came across this intriguing and very good combination of Cuban and Spanish cuisine. Ironically the two go hand-in-hand as opposed to Salvadoran/Mexican! As Cuban foodways derived from Spanish eats along with Afro-Caribbean migration - it seems to have been a perfect fit here. Especially the way they've managed to effectively induce both cuisines under one roof. So, being in such a place catering to both genres of foods, we partook of both and were astonished at the excellent examples and preparation of each representation of their offerings. From their Cuban Yuca Frita, Cuban Fried Chicken, Plátanos Fritos and Flank Steak, to their Spanish Deviled Crab and Caldo Gallego (aka: collard greens soup) it was all well worth the stop to have a unique flavor experiences from two distinct, yet similar cultures, done superbly. After my local Cuban place stopped offering Pork Fricase (because it took too long to prepare they said) I searched for a new place. And boy am I glad I did. La Teresita's version was amazing! Tender chunks of pork in a light red wine sauce with potatoes and olives with white rice and veggies was exactly what I needed. Even the veggies were cooked perfectly. So, I've worked in the food industry here in FL for almost 22 years. I have never seen a service fee on eating in a restaurant. Nor have I ever seen a charge for a Togo container. All were deducted from the tip I left. It was a terrible lunch. My daughter's soup had rice instead of noodles. Not sure if they just ran out that day or forgot to add it to the soup. Oh...and I just realized they charged me a $1 for no onions on my pork! Laughable. It wasn't good food. The croquetta were burnt. The pork was dry. I stumbled on this place while working in St. Petersburg. The owner was very friendly and the restaurant has been in business over 20 years. I came back later for a late lunch, and our waiter, Jesse, was helpful when I asked for recommendations. Pollo Ala Russa was my choice with Yuca and Caldo soup. The chicken was breaded and juicy, with small peas in a light very flavorful sauce. I really enjoyed the collard green soup with beans. It was something new for me to try and it made me happy. The Yuca had a Mojo sauce on it, which added extra flavor. They even served some warm Cuban bread before the meal. I will definitely find my way back to this great little restaurant. We expected more. The menu has a good variety of Cuban foods but the quality is not there. The bistec de pallomilla was dry and bland, the black beans had a seasoning not tipicalnof Cuban black beans. The pork I will say was fantastic, moist and just bursting with flavor! The beans were just ok, a lot of liquid and kind of lacking flavor. I asked for collards and got plantains instead, I like plantains but wasn't in the mood that day. So I didn't want to drive all the way back. The service was acceptable for take out, but not terribly enthusiastic. The place was well decorated and seems like a decent place to dine in, I will likely give it a second chance. I've been coming here since I was a little girl, and they never fail to provide! Although the location is unassuming, the food is awesome. My husband had never been to a real Cuban restaurant. His experience had been Cuban sandwiches only. After twisting his arm and telling him that he would not be disappointed, we went for dinner. I got my regular Filete de La Rusa, which is amazing! A crisp filet of white fish about an inch think and plate long is topped with garlic, peas, roasted red peppers and butter. I always opt for the yellow rice and black beans as my sides with some fresh chopped onions. Portions are out of control...and delicious. My husband went with the beef stew, which I had never had but did nothing disappoint. Giant chunks of slow cooked beef (falling apart) paired with potatoes in a rich gravy. The sandwiches and cafe con leche were fine. The flan had a rubbery bottom suggesting that they over baked it. Service was good and waitress was pleasant. The reason for the 2 stars is that they tacked on an additional 3% service charge on the bill. When asked why, we were told that it's because we are paying with a credit card. My wife didn't want me to make a fuss so I ended up paying. If they choose to charge more for use of a credit card, it should be explained up front to the customer and not slipped into the bill. The menu doesn't state the extra charge, there is no sign stating it and the waitress didn't advise us of it before we ordered. Many customers may not look closely at their bill and pay the extra without knowing it. Bottom line is that what they are doing is not only deceptive but illegal. They may as well tack on extra on the bill because you wore shorts, or didn't wear a shirt of the preferred color. read more
