This review is for Churchville and Bel Air. I love La Tolteca! It's the best. Everything I've ever ordered is great. It's not Americanized fake Mexican food. It's the real deal. The cheese dip is a must! The place is clean and the staff friendly. It gets crowded on the weekends so be prepared to wait. (I think the Bel Air location is a little more crowded and smaller, so Churchville may be a better option.) read more

So I've gone here several times, and it's usually a good idea. Not last night. I ordered three tamales, ate two. Took the last one straight home and put it in the fridge. Went to bed, got up and ate the last tamale in the middle of the night. Bad idea. I spent the next two hours puking my guts out. I think the tamales were from different batches. This is the WORST location. The inside is filthy with trash all over the floor. The staff are dismissive and their wait times are always double what they tell you. I've tried to give this location multiple chances to redeem themselves, as I live close by and love Mexican food, but time and time again they get simple orders wrong. Love the table-side prepared Guacamole. Really good, fresh, and made to order (we wanted it a bit spicier). Had the street tacos. Good, not great. My daughter had steak fajitas. Well-seasoned, very tasty! Portion sizes were generous. Complimentary chips were warm and fresh. Service lacked. Wasn't checked on even once. We weren't asked if we wanted a drink refill until we were clearly done with our meal. I am pretty sure this was an isolated case, as I saw other servers very attentive to their guests. Stopped in for a late lunch on a Saturday. Service was great and our meals were delicious. My father ordered the beef tip chimichangas and talked about how good the meat was for the rest of the day! This place is my go-to restaurant prior to a movie at the Churchville Digiplex or an event at HCC (the other two restaurants in the area aren't even worth discussing). It used to be the best of all of the La Toltecas in the county, but it is rapidly losing its appeal to me. While the food is usually consistent and quick (the white sauce served with tortilla chips is the BEST), the alcoholic drinks have been lacking over the past few months. The last time I visited, my strawberry margarita was the weakest thing I have ever tasted. Last night, I had the Sangria. Note the picture I posted, they no longer serve Sangria with fruit. It is just plain old "sangria" wine- probably out of a box. I asked the server where the fruit was and he said they don't use it anymore. WHAT?? One of the best parts of Sangria is eating the wine soaked fruit! Also, on the past few visits, I have noticed that they are using a really strong cleaner that they spray on the tables when preparing them for new customers. The spray really turns my stomach. I appreciate that they are cleaning, but I am sure that they could find one without such a scent. read more

La Tolteca in Churchville is absolutely horrible. I live about 40 minutes away and picked up food for my husband and I while going home. I gave them his easy but specific order. 3 soft shell chicken tacos with no cheese. I specifically said that my husband is allergic to cheese. The hostess read it back to me and I agreed it was correct. Between both of us, our orders came to $27.00 which I don't know how because the receipt didn't show what we ordered, just a total. Whatever. I bought it bc I was hungry. Once I got home, I realized they gave me 3 soft shell beef tacos loaded with cheese. I called up and spoke with someone named Rosy. They said that we would have to come back in order for them to replace it. I said I couldn't drive back tonight but I could tomorrow. Rosy said it would be fine and we could come back tomorrow. Well today is tomorrow and I call to get my tacos. The person who answered said that she isn't fixing the tacos and I needed to take it up with Rosy tomorrow. She was very rude to say the least. Anyways I've been iffy about this place for awhile. I used to love it and went to the Aberdeen one frequently. But not anymore. For awhile it was either hit or miss but now it just plain sucks. Their salsa is too hot. Their rice is sometimes crunchy. Their chicken tastes dry. Never again. Tacos and Tequila in North East MD is where it's at. Go there instead of this dump. read more

Hungry on that side of town, so I put a to go order in... Only ordered a chimichunga (chicken) & enchiladas (chicken) I should've checked it... I get home a I have a cheese quesadilla and a bean burrito... So I call and explain & they said what do you want us to do? (how about fixing it) so I drive back up there (15minutes) I get there and they were so unorganized... The hostess opens up my food and said what's wrong with it, "it's not what I ordered", he walks around with it, and said I didn't take your order so I can't do anything... 15 more minutes pass by and they come back with a receipt... They realize it was their mistake and fixed it (20 minutes later) I'm so mad by now, I'm ready to go off... I can't go back it's bad enough the person @ the front desk gave me a hard time about the food I paid for and they messed up but I've been to A REAL AUTHENTIC MEXICAN RESTAURANT before and they don't put mixed vegetables in their rice... Lunch is half the price with the same size portions, but I have had better Mexican food before. The chips are always hot and fresh, and some of the best around Bel Air. My college aged daughter took me to La Tolteca in Bel Air last night for dinner; she is not a fan of Mexican food and she LOVES this place. I love it too. The service was the fastest I have ever experienced in a sit down restaurant that was FULL OF PEOPLE. We were seated quickly, had our drinks within 5 minutes and our food was on our table within 15 minutes of ordering. The chips come with salsa and a delicious creamy dip that was a delightful change from just the standard "chips & salsa". We started with queso and while it was not as thick as I've had other places, it was delicious. The portions are huge and I couldn't finish my burrito. There is a huge selection of dishes and I was able to 'customize' my burrito (no bell peppers) as well as have black beans instead of refried beans. These are the best black beans I've ever had. I know that if I offer to pay for dinner, my college student will be all too happy to accompany me for lunch or dinner again. read more

We had the veggie relleno's, chimichanga's and carnitas. The chimichangas were just large flautas that were totally dried out due to not being sealed at both ends. The carnitas were not bad but all you get is three tortillas to eat with them. Maybe some pico de gallo, cilantro, and a lime wedge would be nice. The beans were dried out and the rice was clumpy. The tortilla chips were good. They need to dust more around the windows and turn the AC on. read more

Food is pretty good but the service is awful! Every time I come in no one can say hello or "hola" they just look at me like I'm in their way cuz I have a pick up order. I love La Tolteca when I'm up in the Churchville/Bel Air/Aberdeen area. Each of the locations have their merits. Bel Air is always busy and has an awesome atmosphere. Churchville is relaxed and fun for hanging out with larger groups; plus, you can't beat the tableside quacamole being made. My wife and I were really craving some non-Americanized Mexican food, so we decided to give this place a try. We were very pleased with the food and the humility of the wait staff. The atmosphere is very nice, too. They really make the most out what looks to be an old Roy Rogers fast food building. The dining areas are partitioned so there never seems to be a large crowd, though the place could be full. They started us off with tortilla chips and white cream sauce and salsa. My wife loved the sauce, and the salsa was unique; seems original. I ordered a burrito and enchilada combo, their enchilada seasoning is out-of-this-world tasty. The best part is that you can cut the tortillas with the side of your fork, and the meat won't spill out onto the plate. Refried beans were up to snuff, no worries there. My wife had the enchilada platter. She was given another meal in error. We are not the types to get worked up over a little mistake, and the waiter was very humble and apologetic. He had the correct meal on the table in minutes. My wife really liked the sauce and platter design. Drinks took forever to get refilled. Our vegetarian dish was swimming in oil which made it unhealthy and inedible. We had our party of 115 people catered by La Tolteca in a drop and dash fashion. They barely gave us enough food for 60 people (one platter of meat). We ran out of food early and everyone was disappointed. We were suppose to get chicken and it didn't come with the order. When we complained the manager refused to talk to us...they would not return calls...we went to the store and they won't come out and talk to us. This is a definite favorite. We used to go to White Marsh to Don Pablos when we wanted Mexican, but finally gave La Tolteca a try. No need to make the drive, fight for parking and wait for a table, we found a better option. It's now a weekly event. Love that they make the guacamole tableside, the service couldn't be better and the food arrives quickly, even when they are busy.
