The woman who seated me made had an attitude and made a weird awkward comment about how my "bright truck headlights lit up the whole restaurant." Let's try the empanadas as an appetizer...to arrive 5 minutes later, soggy, clearly microwaved with inconsistent hot and cold patches. Dissatisfied I was ready to indulge in my steak burrito...mediocre, kinda burnt but tolerable. My sister, the 2nd party, requested chicken in her burrito as opposed to the pulled pork she received. My husband, daughter and I are in LOVE with this place. The servers are so wonderful and friendly and welcoming! Our food is ALWAYS fantastic. We love the mariachi band that plays as well. Truly such an amazing restuarant and such good vibes. We've been here least 7 times and we're quickly becoming regulars. Once a week I'd say! What a weird experience. A+ for presentation, but D+ for actual flavor and quality. We got a pitch of Margarita the were 99% sure didn't have alcohol in it... And was $25 Our cheese dip was extremely flavorless, watered down, jar cheese. The salad was for sure not fresh or homemade. I was excited to try the new Mexican restaurant in Bartonsville area. This is a sister restaurant to the original one in the Wilkes-Barre area and we're happy to see them in our area. The restaurant has two large seating areas with mostly 4-5 person booths but also some tables. There is a large and welcoming bar area with TVs for watching some local sports. The food was very good and very plentiful, with most platters easily sharable. They offer fresh guacamole made at the table. I ordered the Chipotle and Shimp Pasta that included many steamed shrimp in a cheesy chipotle sauce over pasta. This was a tasty dish but more cheesy that I would have preferred. It was like an Alfreda consistacy and intensity, if that's your preference. I also tried the chicken and steak fajita which was a really winner. The meat was tender with a nice chared grill flavor. The vegetables were grilled but still crisp. The beans and rice were both enjoyable, plus the pico/lettuce and sour cream sides. There was a health portion of food that made this easily sharable, which I was happy to do. Our table also ordered the Enchilada del Puerto, which was crab and shrimp filled with a lobster bisque sauce. And we ordered a combo platter with a taco, tortilla and a chili rellano. All were tasty and plentiful. The meal also started with nice and crispy chips with a mild and smooth salsa that was enjoyed by all. Everything was fresh and the flavors were on point all except their rice. It was very mushy and tasteless. The white sangria was so amazing the bartender definitely knew what he was doing with that BUT the pina colada tastes like a generic mix that you buy at the supermarket with barely any rum, it was kind of horrible actually. I'm from California and grew up on Mexican-American food. I've also ate in 12 different cities in Mexico. I've ate in Mexican restaurants all over America. My wife and I went to La Tolteca for lunch. The service was fine. My chicken fajitas were a little over cooked, but I like it that way. My wife's burrito had a 1 1/2" long chicken bone in it that she choked and gaged on. She lost her appetite and didn't finish it. The waiter apologized but the manager refused to talk to us. She ordered a margarita but said there Was no alcohol in it. She is a lightweight and can feel the smallest amount of alcohol. The waiter said there was alcohol in it without talking to the bartender. They said we'd get a discount for the chicken bone burrito, but we didn't. We will stick to Moe's and Taco Bell across the street from now on. read more

My wife and I went for our 23rd Anniversary. We went in with no high expectations. That said our critique stayed at the door. Our observation of the place was that we attended at time that was busy [Saturday night]. We were given a pager by a very distracted pleasant lady and were told we had a 25 min wait. We waited the 25 min and a bit more. We knew this not only because we were keeping track but because the hostess came over and asked if we had a pager and then went back to check on the number of the pager and indicated by her"oops" facial expression that we had been overlooked. And by now we were 40 min into our wait. 5 minutes later we were seated. And it gets worse. 2nd, our chips and dip were pretty decent when received 15 min later. 3rd, once we placed our order at the same receiving the chips we didn't get our main course until 45 minutes later. At this time we were already here 90 minutes + and were pretty hungry. Note- we did not order an appetizer because we did not want to be full when our main course was received. When we ordered the drinks we also ordered water but did not get the water until receiving the main course. 4th, the Verde sauce we ordered was served warm. Perhaps that's cultural but not to our liking. To comment on the food- we ordered steak, which was served warm but cooked medium rare. ( We weren't asked how we wanted the steak.) For us that was ok but, if we were anyone else that did not like it that way that would have been another complaint. This is the 5th complaint with the possibility of a 6th. Finally, I have to add the food was tasty, the atmosphere a bit cold and needs improvement. The waitress seemed overwhelmed and constantly apologizing for the wait which we appreciated. So she knew service was compromised. I will say that our waitress was very nice. Because she was nice and knew that the service was not up to par I did not take penalize her. This review is for the Bartonsville location. This is really good Mexican food! We stopped in on a Tuesday night and there was a decent crowd there already. I will admit my biggest negative here is it is so BRIGHT in there. I felt like I was in a school gym. They nNEED to lower the lights a little! Their chips and salsa were really good. Salsa is very pureed, but flavorful.. the chips weren't freshly fried, but they were a good brand! I ordered the Fish Tacos which were really good! The fish was fresh and charred and the accompanying cabbage and chipotle mayo was delish (maybe a little more chipotle but it comes with a different salsa which gave more heat.. hubby had the chicken and spinach enchiladas.. they were ok. The chicken is grilled and it was kind of dry. Suggest they stew the chicken instead.. we ordered sides of rice and beans which were delicious! Was there today for the 1st time. We were a party of seven. I had the mixed fajita which consisted of chicken and steak. It was delish! It comes with rice and beans however I did not eat it. I was done with two fajitas. The portions are very big. We also ordered Guacamole which by the way they make it right in front of you so you know it's fresh. You tell the person what you want in your Guaca. It was Sunday afternoon and it was pretty crowded and the waiter seemed to take long in serving us and a few times he forgot a few things but all in all it was good and I will definitely visit again. This is authentic Mexican food. They have music playing but not so loud that you cannot hear yourselves talk. This is definitely a family oriented restaurant. It pains me to have to post a review on this place because it was a decent restaurant at one time. Made the mistake of thinking I could have lunch here on a Wednesday afternoon. Should have known better when you pretty much see an empty parking lot. Anyhow I figured how bad could they mess up a couple of taco's ? Well it started off bad with a watered down " house margarita ". Awful. Then I had to deal with the watered down salsa. Horrible. One star cause the chips weren't too bad. Partner had the chicken tacos and I had the pork. Meat tasted like it was withering away on a shelf somewhere in the back room for days. Wouldn't feed it to my dog. And lastly , don't let me forget about the side of rice ! Cold , sticky , and would make good mortar for a concrete mix. I was texting with a friend and told her I wanted to surprise my gf with dinner - she immediately recommends this place. So, I call my gf, tell her to get dressed because I'm treating her to Mexican food tonight (it's her favorite food and I'm not good at cooking it). We find the place easy enough....we immediately are shown our booth. The food was typical Mexican.... nothing great/nothing horrible....just the prototypical confusing menu of every other Mexican restaurant. This place gets a 1 star because our waitress was appalling. She couldn't even get the basics correctly. After she took our drink order she disappeared for a good 20 minutes. I asked a different waiter passing by and I was told he was unable to assist us but begged forgiveness because she was new. She wasn't new....she was clueless. What waitress doesn't know to take a drink order and then return with said drinks within a reasonable amount of time (say 10 minutes). She got our order wrong, she was ambivalent about it and still expected a tip. While we were waiting (at least she was consistent....we over-waited for everything) we overheard the same excuse from the same waiter apologizing to ANOTHER couple about her service. She was attentive and would check on us. I ordered a strawberry mango frozen margarita (jumbo size it) can never have too much for a couple dollars difference! Empanada appetizer (2 chicken and 2 beef), chicken was a bit mushy/salty so nothing to rave about. My friend got the wings...again nothing to rave about. Main meal: shrimp and steak fajita. I already struggled as I love food and add on Mexican food mmm! And can never go wrong with fajita but boy was I wrong! The tortilla had to be sent back cuz it was hard on the two ends, our waitress gladly replaced it. And the 2nd was just the same as well. The shrimp was fine but the dear steak....so super dry. Didn't even enjoy it one bit. I told our waitress and the manager took the fajita off, I basically returned my entree after eating if even one of it. I'm thankful the chips and salsa was good, between that and the empanada and margarita it was ok. Stopped in for lunch. Food: Was recommended to try the Spinach & Chicken Enchiladas. The presentation was well done and aroma was appetizing. Taste... individually: the green sauce was creamy and rich; the chicken wasn't dry and had a decent seasoning; the spinach was cooked perfectly but very bland. As a combined bite it became very muddled and almost bland, if not for the crema this wouldn't have been worth eating. Drink: I ordered the Texas Margarita and it wasn't as great as it could have been, but was worth the price point and went well with the meal. Service was absolutely horrible. Couldn't finish your sentence without the waiter either interrupting or walking away. We had to rush talking so he wouldn't walk off. Bottom of the plates were filthy with dried food on the bottom. Food was mediocre and very obviously microwaved with the outside being cool and the inside being piping hot. The pastry was undercooked complimented nicely with chewy chicken. A nearby table complained about the same things and when he addressed the waiter, the same one we had, he simply laughed and replied with "no one ever complains" and walked away. We were trying to find something in the area that wasn't a chain and decided to give La Tolteca a shot. We are so glad we did! Drinks were great-- the white sangria and micheladas were both highlights. Tableside guac with pineapple was fantastic (and a big step up from the salsa, which was the only part of our meal that was subpar). My wife ordered the Chori Steak, which was done correctly and topped with well-seasoned (but not overly salty) chorizo. I had the Carnitas dinner-- wonderfully crisped and full of flavor. Our waitress was exceedingly friendly. Now, add on top of all of this a live mariachi band, and it was just a really fun evening.
