During the winter season, there is the added element of snow and icy roads. For some peace of mind, I brought a pair of crampons and gaiters. The hike started around 7:45am with a cool and crisp breeze. Best to keep cozy and layer up. First three or so miles were pretty similar to what you would expect during the summer, terrain-wise. The trail was fairly clean and clear with a few spots to climb up boulders or take a break near the river. One moment you pass through a cluster of trees surrounded by freshly fallen pinecones, and the next you are met with what seems strikingly like the same scree as the last. At a certain point though, the trail became icy and the air slightly chillier. Upon reaching the end of the saddle, there were a number of folks sipping from their thermos and playing with their pooch. After eating our packed lunch, we ventured further up towards Timber Mountain. It was here where patches of snow gradually became blankets as far as the eyes could see. With that said, crampons were unnecessary. The trail was no longer visible since we could not see the ground, so we kept heading up towards the trees till the sign "TIMBER MTN. ELEV. 8303" was within sight. We were greeted with a stunning view of snow-covered hills. There was also a little box of guestbooks to sign. We decided to take the Chapman trail back down. Whereas Ice House was more spread out, Chapman was more narrowly defined with more ups and downs. A few more areas looked like boulders worth a climb. Most of the manzanitas along the way were healthy and bushy with many of them bearing fruit. If you have the time, Chapman is easily the more scenic of the two and worth the extra mile and a half. In total, we hiked around 11 miles and enjoyed it immensely.

Took me 3.5 hours to get up to saddle and 1.5 hours to get down. Make sure you fill out the free permit form in the brown box at the start of the trail (very important, in case something happens to you on the trail, ie, you get hurt or lost, etc).

People slid down it, but their feet hit the bottom real quick. So I don't recommend going head first or diving in. It is shallow at the bottom of the falls. Their are alot of people here now due to social media. Parking is packed. You might have to park across the street. Get an adventure pass from 7-11. Big 5 has them, but they don't open till 10. I've only heard about this spot, but have never been so I was excited to explore. The hike is not shaded and has a steady incline, so I was grateful that it was overcast and cool most of the day. The trail is wide enough for a car to drive on, and no major rocky areas, so I would say that if you were reeeeeally ambitious and wanted to push a jogging stroller up and down, you probably could. There are occasional bikers that we passed, but otherwise just a few hikers doing this trail, much less than the number of people doing the loop, which I actually liked. With the exception of the ugly graffiti on the concrete thing at the top, we were rewarded with a beautiful view of the valley on one end, and snow capped mountains on the other end. It didn't take that long to summit ( I think it took us less than an hour each way), so if you have a couple hours for something a little more challenging than the loop, this is a good hike! Parking is available in the lot starting at $10 (Yikes!) on the weekends. Enjoy!

First time visitor There are not bathrooms anywhere…read more There are a few (3?) trash can / compost / recycle green bins at the start of the trail There is not a designated parking area if coming on MT Baldy RD, park after the last No Stopping Any time sign (will see Angeles Forest large sign) then can park on the side of the road and forward Be aware of oncoming traffic both directions when walking to the trail head Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunblock, water, snacks It is dog friendly but tough for stroller I think based on continual incline and gravel and rocky terrain Also note air may feel thinner as you start the trail so be mindful of your breathing and take rest stops Start of trail will be walking through shaded area with tree and can hear water and as continue the pathway make your descent up As you make your way further up, there will be part to turn left or go straight to the right, head to the left to continue upward - you'll see amazing clouds surrounding the mountain and the trail continuing You'll see a pathway that curves down the hill then back up, a right triangular metal sign will indicate going the right way and almost to the end of the trail. For walker hikers and runners. Be prepared, take extra socks shoes and clothing. Plus snacks. DO NOT TRASH THE AREA! PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF. The river crossings have been amazing...right after the rains and melting snow..the water level is great. The trails are twisty and rough, laden with jagged rocks and fallen trees... get there early, or during the week. In groups, take walkie talkies if need be. This trail is for those who are fit ready and determined... it's long and challenging. A pass might be needed, and please park in designated areas, as I saw highway patrol taking photos of license plates for cars who are not parked correctly. Have fun and enjoy.

First one not too too bad, it's the second one that you need help with someone holding the rope tight. There is a big while that will take you under. We were the only 50+ year olds on this hike and we did it. The trails are pretty much gone. Your climbing over and under ditched the rain took out. There are steep hills to go down and up. Also something like quick sand. Mountains of trees also to get over. You can miss markings on where to go up out down so be super watchful. Non stop, it took 7.10 hrs to bridge and back including 20 min lunch and helping others cross the river "stream" Hard challenging but we did

Pick up after yourself. Don't tag. Nobody cares about your tagging name or art or whatever. There's a time and place. Tagging the wilderness is not the time nor place. There's many secret places I hike, I won't put it out there because when you do, just look at Lytle creek. That's the outcome. Highlight of hike was seeing a herd of Bighorn up close. They were drinking from the creek. Absolutely beautiful.

If you get here at prime-time around 8am on the weekends, should be fine but past 9am and you're going to be SOL. Better to wait until the first wave of visitors finish... Takes about 1.5hrs. More parking in the afternoon but then you're risking peak sun which can be unbearable depending on the weather. Little to no shade on this tail. Lots of areas with loose rock, so be careful with casual shoes. It gets very, very windy towards the top of the trail and some areas along the hike. There is some graffiti on the trail. The waterfall is okay, can't complain considering limited hike options nearby.

There are QR codes to scan to buy a day pass. It's $4 for 4 hours. That's plenty of time to get to falls, enjoy them for a bit and get back. Keep the trail and waterfall preserve area nice by taking your trash home with you. We all want to enjoy this space
