It's been one great experience after another at Laboratory. I'm so glad they moved over to Morris Plains! This is a big salon and they have a ton of stylists. If you aren't picky about who does your hair then it's not hard to snag a last minute appointment. They also stay open extra late on Thursday nights which is convenient. I've had two haircuts here and both have been great! Gina did my hair last and she was fabulous. I'm really happy with how it came out, and she was so sweet. (The trips to NYC were becoming less doable for me) I am super picky with my blonde and unfortunately had not found a salon in Motown that was up to speed since we moved here from Montclair five years ago. Making an appointment is super easy! I made my appointment with Meaghan a few days out and was able to easily find metered parking in front of the salon. I came with intentions to donate my hair and chop it (mostly) off. Meaghan and the salon had experience with that department and were able to give me information on organizations who take hair donations and the steps to send it off to them. After telling Meaghan what I wanted and showing her a few pictures, chop! I left a happy girl and love my new cut. I'll be back for my next cut soon! read more

This was my first time at Laboratory Hair and I absolutely loved my experience. My stylist was Amanda and she did such a great job and gave me exactly what I wanted in our consultation. She gave me a full balayage and gave me a cut that made my hair less heavy since I have so much hair. The ambiance was great. Very professional and very clean. I have been a Laboratory customer for 4 years. Never had an issue with the service, great staff. Much better than the competition next door. The reason I am posting a One star is because until now I did not realize they have little to no appreciation for Long Term Customers. I had gotten late by 15mins for an appointment back in 2020 when the world was topsy turvy. I remember still making it to the appointment. Recently, again for an appointment that I had to wait for full 2 months, I ran late. The staff called me, asking for my whereabouts 11mins in the appointment. I told them i will be there in next few minutes, I was told that they cannot accommodate since I am already late. They told as per policy they will charge me 50% of the fee for the services requested ($40 for me). So had I added services for $200 that would have been $100 cancellation fee, regardless of how long it takes. I asked for an exception as a Long Term customer - clear NO! I told them to go ahead and charge it....well, only to receive a call back that the card is not working. I could have very easily not giving the card or not picked up the phone. But I did pick and also shared the card. As I shared the card , I told them not to save the card as I do not plan on coming back. Staff told me okay, not a problem and hung up. Only deserve 1 star for treating customers as money making machine read more

My first Devacurl haircut last year was amazing. This time I was very disappointed. The stylist had lots of great tips for my hair, but I was overwhelmed with the amount of information. My curls are dried out and frizzy, which I am trying work through and she gave advice on, but my hair was even more frizzy after I got home from the salon. Today (the day after) I noticed the haircut is very uneven and I may have to cut some of them myself (which makes me nervous!). I was willing to pay for an expensive curly cut knowing it would be a good one, but that didn't happen this time. They wanted me to come back in another 3-4 months, but last year I was told I only needed to come back every 6-12 months. I want to give this place another chance since they have so many Devacurl stylists, but this wasn't a good experience for me. read more

Don't go there if you value your curly hair. They claim they have Deva trained stylists but I just had a very nice hair stylist hack my hair to pieces. I got a dry cut, but she still chopped it all off even though I asked for a trim. This place is only good for straight hair. Save yourself the tears and go to Devachan in Soho. I still paid, and I still tipped just over 20 percent, but it's going to take a really long time to get my hair back. read more

With my hair grown out, I figured I'd look up a place with high reviews and splurge on my first cut of the quarantine. My overall experience with Laboratory Hair Studio was memorable, enjoyable, and marked with exceptional professionalism. I'm going to shape my review and experience in 3 major sections: Pre-cut; At the Salon; and Post-visit. **PRE-CUT: Before making the commitment, I called into the Salon to ask questions. Their reviews and pictures seemed to indicate that the salon's clientele was dominantly female hairstyling. However, the receptionist assured me that stylists have a lot of experience cutting men's hair, as well. My hairstyle is a very sensitive thing to me because my hairline has been thinning over the past two years due to stress. I made it a quarantine goal of mine to find a salon that would allow me to feel confident and good about my hair. I've been gladly & comfortably getting my hair cut by my previous barber for the past 10 years of my life but I was open to a possible change. The receptionist was understanding of my situation and answered all my questions with knowledge and patience. She gave me the recommendation to get my haircut by Carmen and set up my appointment easily. My pre-visit conversation made me feel a lot better about coming in and that I would be in good hands. **AT THE SALON: When I arrived at the salon, I was met with exceptional professionalism and care. They asked to read my temperature, fill out a Covid-19 questionnaire, and I was asked if I'd like a service beverage. They sanitize all areas, have access to hand sanitizer for clients, clients/stylists keep their masks on during the session, and the stylists are incredibly mindful and considerate of the client's comfort, as well. Once I sat down in my seat, I had the privilege of meeting my new stylist, Carmen. I came in communicating a very particular idea of how my hair was cut in the past, what my hair is like, and inspirations on how I'd like my hair to be cut and adjusted. My recommendation would be to go in with an idea of what you want, communicate, and trust that the stylists expertise will help you achieve a certain look you're hoping to become a reality. I did just that- I explained, and let Carmen show me her skills & artistry. She was incredibly thoughtful throughout the session as she asked me questions, made recommendations while still respecting what I desired, and she even explained the reasons why she was making certain decisions in the cutting process. This is precisely the reason why I wanted to transition from a barber to a salon. It's all about that care, precision, and intentionality. Layering, texture, weight... things so often overlooked in a barbershop setting (in my personal experiences). As a client, I very much appreciated her gentle, calm-spirited demeanor, and down-to earth personality. I'm grateful she was open to having good conversation, as well. :) Please don't make her really busy so it's harder for me to see her easily... Totally kidding. **POST-CUT: I loved that I walked out of the Salon with new knowledge, ready to style my hair on my own. I was set up for success. I purposely wrote this review 2-3 days after to see how sustainable my hairstyle would be. I've already gotten nothing but compliments on my new look. GOAL: check. success. Feeling confident and good about my hair. Carmen worked her magic to keep that hairline hidden and controlled. Since this is an honest review, my only hope is that I'll be able to get my hair cut in the same way with consistently. I'm new to the salon so I understand it'll take time. Not a bad hair cut, just okay. My stylist just didn't listen. I was incredibly clear - I told her exactly how many inches I wanted off - and she nearly doubled it. I was turned away from the mirror and head down - no way to see what she was doing. Even after she finished doing the front and faced me towards the mirror and said, "how's this?" I responded, "much shorter than I asked for but there's nothing we can do about it." She was nice, not really talkative but oh well. It felt as though she rushed through my style for her next appointment even though I was scheduled for an hour and I left less than 45 minutes from my arrival. Again not a bad hair cut - just maybe distracted or didn't think I was serious about what I wanted. Front desk ladies were warm and welcoming. Salon has a great atmosphere. Not a good experience. I found this salon trying to get my first deva cut since mostly the salons that offer this service are in NYC. First of all when I called to book this deva cut I wasn't told that I had to go with my hair untied and with no products on it. So that was a bad start. Then I asked for a short cut, above the shoulders, easy to manage. I ended up with a very uneven 80 dollars mullet. I had long strands coming out. I waited a couple days because sometimes it takes a bit for my hair to settle into a new haircut, but after a week I had to go to another salon to fix it. Laboratory fit me in for a last-minute request for a blowout when I was in the area for an event. I first phoned another, closer, salon who was booked-up and they suggested that I try Laboratory. When I phoned, they were kind and welcoming to my rather late-request. When I arrived, they were just as friendly and their service was great. I had a great blowout from Stefania who made my hair (that needs a haircut bad!) look great. I had been coming here for a couple of years and I have never been so disappointed in a hair salon. This place is known for its color, hence the name. Their haircuts are just as good. I am very picky when it comes to hair, nail and spa places. I find, more times then not, most places are mediocre at best and charge way more for their service then should be expected. This place was pretty decent. $50 for a cut $50 for a single process color $120 for full head of highlights $100 for partial. I mean for Morristown, its a given. Service was pretty decent too, I always came back loving my hair cut and color. I was there a few months ago and had discussed with my stylist that I would like to come in for a bridal trial updo for my wedding coming up the end of this year. She quoted me a price, which I thought was very high but given the area, seems to be the going rate unfortunately. She told me it was $75 for a bridal trial updo and $90 for the day of my wedding. Thinking it was expensive I looked elsewhere and as they saying goes, when you stray, you pay. And did I! So I then gave a call back just a few weeks ago, only a couple of months after seeing my stylist, to set up an appointment. Well, since they "expanded" their space, the prices more than doubled! A bridal trial updo was now $95 and an updo on my wedding day was $125!! I said to her, but you told me a different price only a few months ago. She said, well these are the prices now. I had been going to this salon for years and I was shocked that my stylist, knowing that she quoted me a price only a few months before, wouldn't grandfather me into that price given my history at the salon. I would even tip her 30% of whatever my bill came out to every time I was there! I feel she should have been fair and preformed the service for the original quoted price given my history and tipping record there. Oh well, needless to say, I didn't get the updo and I'll never go back to the salon again now. Yes they perform decent service, but don't think for a second that they won't bump up your prices in a heartbeat regardless of how long you have been going there. I was looking for a salon that offered a deva cut and found Laboratory on the DevaCut site. They aren't close to home but they had to beat reviews and now I know why! Everyone one staff I interacted with was amazing. From the young lady who took my call and booked my appointment to the one who washed my hair and of course, Alyssa, who cut my hair so perfectly. Everyone has information to share and was helpful, pleasant and safe. Will definitely be back for another cut with Alyssa. First curly hair cut was incredible, proper cut and styling was great! Went in recently for my second trim, unfortunately won't trust going back. When I got home by hair was styled so bad I had just put it up. Once I washed myself, the cut is totally uneven, long and then short pieces throughout, asked for a dust trim to better shape and when I finally styled my hair properly I have a section of hair as short as my chin. Can't give enough praise/stars/compliments to Laboratory! I've been a client for years now and every time I walk out I feel my best. I started seeing Elyse and she listened, gave expert advice, and always went that extra mile to make me look amazing. I loved her so much that I recommended her to my friend and roommate and she is also still going to Laboratory 3 years later! At one point when Elyse was out I took the receptionist's recommendation and tried Amanda, who I also loved! My hair never looked blonder and I got so many compliments. Amanda's schedule was limited, and Elyse was promoted and very busy, so on a whim I booked with Katie who I had watched move from assistant to getting her own chair. Another crazy talented stylist, and so friendly. You know that Laboratory is an amazing salon with great staff because they never made me feel uncomfortable about booking with another stylist based on my schedule and needs. If I would be in Katie's chair, Elyse would come over and catch up with me and say hi. My friend has also booked with Katie and really loves her work. Fast forward to 2021 and my dear Elyse and Amanda have left the salon, but I have such confidence in the expertise of the entire staff that I booked an appointment with Maria. Another perfect 10! I walked out with hair that looked styled right out of a Pinterest page. It's like the entire staff can understand exactly what I'm looking for before I can even articulate it. I used to go into the city for my haircuts but it was just too far. I've been to Laboratory twice. I read through the bio's on the site and chose Alana to cut my curly hair. She explained everything she did and asked me a ton of questions. My first cut was perfection. I was extremely pleased. (4 stars) My second experience was not as pleasing...same great service but my cut was lopsided. I didn't notice it until I washed my hair the next day. I was really disappointed. (dropped to 3 stars...really I would have given 2.5) The breakdown: The place is easy to get to, the staff is really friendly, the salon is VERY clean and their appointment reminder calls are really great (especially if you're like me and don't put it in your calendar). Oh and if you park on the street, they'll run out and feed your meter. They seem to be really good with color and straight hairstyles (from what I can see when I was there).
