I've only eaten here twice but loved it both times. Chicken Tortilla soup is delicious. It had lots of chicken and just the right amount of spices. The New England Clam Chowder tasted just as good as you get at Fisherman's Wharf (Granted, it may have been because I was extremely hungry). $5.50 for a bowl of soup and a big hunk of sourdough bread, it's just the right amount of food for me and healthier than a cheesburger and fries. Pretty average soup to be called a soup company. I've only tried their chicken noodle, but I wasn't impressed and honestly wonder if it is completely in house made. It's a quick option in the neighborhood if you are desperate for some warm soup, but nothing to be raving about. read more

I come here often because it's cheap, healthy, and they are always changing the menu. The staff is pretty quick when it comes to the orders and they are friendly. I usual order the regular size, which I find to be enough for me. The soups taste fresh and it's great that they allow you to taste the soups. Their mac and cheese is a great deal, though it seems a bit heavy for me. I wish there were more of these in the East Bay because I would be going to the SF Soup Co more than I already do! read more

Came here for my first time a couple weeks back (after walking past it a million times). Ordered the clam chowder and picked up a half sammich... clam chowder was average. I've had better, but it was hearty and fulfilled my soup craving that day. The sammich was also average as well... nothing to brag about. Whenever I come to Oakland for business I know I'm going to spend at least 3 of my 5 week days at the SF Soup Company. I LOVE soup! They have a great selection of soups - small, large and really large. With each bowl of soup you get hunk of sourdough or a wheat role. My favorite is the tortilla soup. I've tried others but always go back to this. My only issue this time around was a thought it was a little pricey. I got a large soup, a chocolate chip cookie and a soda. My bill was almost $11. The guy that works here reminds me of the "soup nazi" from Seinfield.... stern and quickly wants to know what kind of soup you want. The variety of soups is so vast here! There's a some soups that are offered daily and then there are the specials that change every day. It's nice and thick and they put crushed tortilla chips, green onions & mozarella cheese on top. Now the only bad thing is it is a little pricey: around $5 for a cup depending on the type of soup. One thing I noticed it that when they are low on certain types of soups, they bring out "refills" in these plastic bags. Seems a little unfresh to me. The good thing is that on a not so busy day, you can try a little sample of the soups to see which one you'd like. If it's busy that day and you want to sample, you may be risking it with many busy & hungry business people around you. As you're cruising down the line to the cash register, they have already prepared sandwiches, green salads & fruit salads... all of which are overpriced and not that good. This place can't be that fresh as I found a piece of what appears to be aluminum in my clam chowder soup today. Tried to call twice today to let them know but nobody picked up the phone. I am only giving one star because they actually do have soup at the site, not that I would know about the taste or quality because they refused our certificates which were very valid. Apparently, the owner didn't let his employees know that the Soup Factory's credits are good at Ladle and Leaf as well. We don't go to San Francisco to the other Ladle and Leaf, because this one is closer to our house. Very disappointed with the rudeness of the employees. By the time we get to SF, the certificates will probably be out of date as well. read more

The split pea soup is too thick. More like split pea baby food. No liquid. You have to literally lick it off of the spoon. The chili I had yesterday was tasty, however the turkey is over ground up. Sorry to say I was disappointed in the Chicken & Roasted Corn "chowder." I was expecting the thick, creamy Boston-type chowder but instead got the thin soupy kind. My coworker and I agree that restaurants should stop using the term "chowder" for the broth-style cuz it's misleading. Just our opinion. That said, my wife enjoyed her Gazpacho and the sourdough was yummy. I will head back for sure to try more varieties, undeterred. read more

I always get the split pea with ham and they add cilantro on the top (they always ask if you'd like cilantro). It's consistent and really good! It tastes like there's not a lot of fat in it either so hopefully it is low fat. Lots of small carrots and tiny bits of tomato. The small size with a roll is a little over five dollars. I like their long menu of soups and decent prices. My favorite is the southwestern corn chowder. They get busy at lunch, but the line moves fast. I've tried their sandwich and salads... meh. i'm eating the vegetarian, dairy-free (does that = vegan? i hope so...) Caribbean Sweet Potato soup right now, and it is AWESOME. one of the tastiest soups i've ever had - thick, spicy, full of flavor. this soup is not low carb or fat free - i do wish they'd list the ingredients online or somewhere - people have mentioned they use lots of corn starch, which i'd like to know... i have the reusable bowl (which i use for other things too), and i like that they provide biodegradable utensils. overall - great soup. a little pricey, but unfortunately when you're trying to eat well and vegan you don't have too many other options downtown besides salad. read more

The thing about chain restaurants is that it's predictable, and sometimes predictable is good. I always get their clam chowder and even if there is a long line, they are efficient and the line moves quickly. It might not be service with a smile, but I really just want my soup. This place is 4 stars because it's close to my work (1 block away), quick and has tasty soups. - They have a selecton of soups staples that they serve every day. My favorites are turkey chili & mexican chicken tortilla - they have different specials each day -- it is quite varied each day so you never know what they may serve.. - you can taste the soup before getting one (like fro yo) - they mark each soup with special designations (i.e. vegetarian, dairy free, etc) - each soup comes with a big chunk of sourdough bread or roll -- great for dipping into the soup - for $5.50ish this is not bad and quite filling to say the east. you can easily make it a combo by getting a small sandwich or salad for a couple of bucks more - the line can get long starting around noon-ish but it moves quickly enough. read more

I love soup. I've lived in Oakland too long to have only recently discovered San Francisco Soup Company. It's extremely walkable from work, and I think I almost cried during my first visit when I saw that I could get soup AND mac & cheese. I've been coming in regularly for about 2 months and I can't get enough. I try to order something new each time. Today it was BBQ Pork Split Pea and Indian Mulligatawny, the second time I almost cried in this place. The soup is just so great! My soup habit is a little expensive at over $5 for each bowl (plus extra bread and a cookie for later), but well worth it. Variety and convenience are crucial. Even though it's "fast food" it's one of the best places to get soup for cheap in the area. I like the split pea soup. And the bread they serve with your order is decent. The sandwiches/wraps are a bit disappointing, especially if you pick them up later in the day -- they have that unfortunate Saran wrap taste and they're a bit soggy, but otherwise edible. A good spot for lunch. I have been a few times, and every time I go I enjoy my meal. The soups are good, very fresh and tasty. All they have are pre-made sammy's (-1 star). A bowl of soup cost 5-6 bucks, which i feel is a little over priced, and lets be honest, most of us want more than soup for lunch, so add a half sammy and a beverage and you can push close to $10... considering the near bu options, this is a good spot for luch in the city center area. read more

I work in city center, and frequent this place on most days when I don't bring my lunch. I am always impressed by the friendly staff and speed of service, even when there in a long line. I LOVE the Mexican chicken tortilla soup, seasonal Coconut Dal, Corn Chowder, Thai Peanut Salad, and Autumn Harvest salad. I appreciate that they have rotating seasonal specialities- so many options! The place was decent for a quick lunch. I ordered grandma Mary's chicken soup and had a half turkey sandwich. The soup was pretty bland and the sandwich was pretty good (could've had some texture to it). Thankfully they have a variety of hot sauces to spice the soup with.
