We chose Ladybird Bakery because it was super close to where we were having our wedding and got good reviews, and we are so glad we did! Melanie met with us over a month beforehand to do a cake tasting, and we got to try the fillings, frosting, and the cakes themselves. We were able to select a cake that was beautiful, delicious, and in our price range, and the whole process was incredibly easy and professional. On the day of our wedding, Melanie personally delivered the cake and applied fresh flowers to it at the venue--it looked absolutely stunning! Our guests raved about how lovely and tasty it was--lemon cake with raspberry jam and lemon custard filling, with a cream cheese and buttercream frosting and cascading cream flowers. I came here today based off a recommendation from a receptionist at the hospital. I was looking for a sweet potato pie. Don't waste your time here because they don't make them here. CONS: 1. There was no health score posted (I looked around before I left & also on Yelp). 2. Some baked goods are just out in the open, UNCOVERED. (Cookies & pies) 3. I didn't feel very welcomed - I informed the person working behind the counter that it was my first time visiting and they just said "oh. Well let me know if you have any questions." No sales pitch whatsoever. Of course I have questions! 4. They also don't answer the phone, as I'd called ahead to see about the pie. 5. While I waited to place an order, some curly-haired woman came from upstairs and started helping me. She didn't wash her hands before getting my order & she looked visibly annoyed when I asked for a specific piece of pecan fudge bar. (Of course i asked for the one underneath the plastic. The most outer piece was just sitting out in the open like someone picked it up & put it back). After multiple attempts of trying to pick up my order with a sheet of paper, they put on a glove to get it from underneath the the plastic wrap. Then they made comment under their breath to the cashier when they bagged up my food. I should've left then. Overall, I will never visit this place again. The bar I purchased desperately needed more salt but it was good for a sugar kick. I didn't finish it, as I couldn't shake the poor experience I'd had there. Stoped by here because I was craving cupcakes. I bought the Brooklyn Blackout, Strawberry Blossom, and Marble cupcakes. Strawberry Blossom was my favorite, it consisted of a homemade strawberry filling that tasted so fresh with real strawberry pieces and strawberry cheesecake frosting. This was the most delicious cupcake I have tasted thus far, hands down! Brooklyn Blackout was three layers of dark chocolate with chocolate pudding filling, frosted with fudge and chocolate cake crumbs. I thought I would never say this but here it goes... it was too much chocolate! One bite and I felt as if I officially had diabetes. Good, but it was too much for me. The Marble Cupcake was almost not memorable, it was moist but there's nothing about it that stood out. The cupcakes are rather pricey at about $4-$5 per cupcake (unless you get the mini ones). Mouth watering, top notched pies. Had the Pecan pies, and the Raspberry Pear pie and both tasted so deliciously good. It is a bit small and on the pricy side, but it is worth it. The graham crust was done just right, it didn't fall apart and has a buttery texture to it. The Raspberry Pear pie was on the sweeter side, the custard filling inside balances out the outter jam. I went to get the blackout cake for a guy I was dating. I took an hour ride from UES to Brooklyn for him (time I will never get back). He loved dark chocolate cake but, alas, he never got a chance to try the famous blackout cake. We ended things that night so I had it all for myself. It was delicious. It is the best chocolate cake of my life. I opened a bottle of red wine and started off with his beautifully written name and worked up to the happy birthday part. There are layers of cake batter and fudge in every bite. It's sweet (unlike him) and very rich in flavor (again, unlike him). It brought me so much happiness and satisfaction. I ate the pretty yellow flowers last (there are two versions of the Blackout cake with one black and one decorated) and it was the perfect ending to a shitty memory. So thank you, Ladybird, for the birthday cake I didn't want but absolutely needed that weekend. *Recommended with red wine, Lord Huran and long phone calls with your best friend. read more

This is probably the best bakery to go to for blackout cakes and carrot cakes. I've never liked carrot cakes. I still don't like carrot cakes, except for theirs. Their carrot cakes are the best that I've ever tried. Now, I've had assorted cupcakes from this place and here are my reviews for each flavor: The BLACKOUT cupcakes are good or "okay" but for whatever reason, a whole blackout cake (by the slice) tastes sooo good and much better, especially at room temperature. CARROT CUPCAKES AND CAKES are absolutely delicious. Their VANILLA & RED VELVET cupcakes I've tried several times and unfortunately I've been met with disappointment. It's a little dry for my liking. The chocolate and carrot cakes are usually moist but their vanilla and red velvet are not as moist. So I would skip those. I also wish this place stayed on top of their blackout cupcakes inventory. If they know that their blackouts are huge sellers, then they should produce more. Today, I had a custom Brooklyn Cream cake and it was so delicious! It came out beautiful but be careful cutting it as it's not that "solid" because it's really moist. There was a simple flower design in a ready made cake that I wanted to replicate, just with yellow flowers. The cake they made for me was not the pretty simple design but more kind of over the top flowers which I didn't love . I ordered a pie for Thanksgiving and forgot my pickup time. I called and spoke with a woman that immediately gave me attitude when I asked her to confirm my pickup. I ordered online so you would assume there would be a confirmation sent but there wasn't. After waiting on hold for a while, a man told me that they have lots of tickets and can't find mine because there are too many. It's a freaking online order! They can't search for a name??? I asked to cancel my order and I hear that rude woman in the background with her snotty attitude saying she will gladly cancel. Picked up a Brooklyn Blackout cake here off the other Yelp! Reviews, and my fellow Yelpers were on the money! This cake is layers of chocolate cake interlaced with multiple layers of chocolate fudgey icing. The general consensus was 'this cake is "insert expletive of choice" amazing'.. As a non chocoholic, this cake was awesome. I also picked up a pecan pie looking tart from Ladybird on my visit. It's was excellent.. The pie was sweet but not overtly so, and the tart shell was very rich and tasty, stood up against the pecan pie filling very well.. I was really pleased with my visit to Ladybird. Chocolate cake was requested by the birthday boy, so I hopped in here early Sunday morning to try and snag a cake. They had a small, but perfect selection. Nothing over the top. I chose Brooklyn Blackout and was on my way. It was a hefty $45 or so, but the cake did not disappoint. It was fudgy, moist and delicious. Because they do wonderful things with buttercream, I had them make my wedding cake with got rave reviews from guests. After an evening of happy houring, we were in the mood for a nightcap in the form of sugary deliciousness. Our search led us here, and we were thankful for the tiny tables and stools where we could sip our lattes and take a respite from the cold. The place is charming and quaint and blue. I immediately noticed the adorable aprons on the wall, on sale for $25. Onto the desserts. When it comes to sweets, a little bit goes a long way. A small bite of something rich and decadent, and I'm a happy camper. Unfortunately, everything here seemed enormous...giant cupcakes ($2.75), tarts ($9 and $13, some piled high with icing), and all kinds of large cakes. There was a minimal selection of mini cupcakes and cookies, none that particularly called out at me. More unfortunately, our cupcakes were dry, crumbly, and tasteless. Sure, mine looked pretty. I'm sure it looked pretty sitting there ALL DAY LONG, and possibly the day before. Yeah, yeah, it was almost closing time (i.e. they would have tossed it in garbage 15 minutes later if I hadn't bought it). But if you're still selling it, I still expect it to taste good. Not a good place for walk-ins. Probably better for larger, custom orders. read more

This is my absolute favorite bakery in the area. This was a huge problem when they shut down my train station and I had to start getting off a stop earlier and walking past this bakery every single day after work and try not to go in and buy a cake. THIS WAS A HUGE PROBLEM I TELL YOU. Why? Because everything in this goddamn bakery is so goddamn good it makes me want to push all of the children waiting around for cupcakes out of the way and jump on the counter then eat my way out of the cake counter like a facehugger from Alien busting outta some guy's chest. I always get my birthday cakes here because it's too goddamn good to pass up. The Strawberry cake is gorgeous, the Brooklyn Cream cake is to die for, the Red Velvet is perfect, the Brooklyn Blackout makes me weep (and I don't even like chocolate cake and yet THIS one is amazing), even the plain ass Vanilla cakes are covered in gorgeous flowers and taste like a goddamn angel. I am a huge fan of the Two Little Red Hens Brooklyn blackout cake, and I found out about Ladybird Bakery when researching where to find blackout cake in Brooklyn to avoid trekking to Dean & Deluca. (Riding a crowded train while balancing a cake is too precarious for my taste) So I went here to get cakes for thanksgiving. The interior was cute, the cakes were all beautifully decorated. The 12$ cakes looked a tad small, so I decided to get two. The Brooklyn blackout and the Almond Princess. The Brooklyn blackout cake was as delicious as I'd hoped, and I loved the addition of the pretty orange flowers. The Almond Princess cake blew my mind. Was even better than the Brooklyn blackout, which was previously my favorite cake. It's superbly moist and almond-y. The raspberry was a perfect complement. Definitely one of the best bakeries in NYC even if it's technically in Brooklyn. This is the sister bakery to Two Little Red Hens (which I have yet to visit), which for all intent and purposes, is off the beaten path for most New Yorkers- deep in South Slope accessible only by F/G and auto. Fortunately, their goods can be found in many eateries within the city limits. You just have to look, and you'll find them easily. The staff is amiable and patient. The bakery itself is a quaint (read: cute and small) delight to visit... and visit I have- several times already. Amongst all the choices available in the display in the way of cakes, tarts, is the vast assortment of popular cupcakes, which I gravitate to all the time... perhaps the problem is choice. If you've never had their hallmark Brooklyn Blackout cupcakes, hang on, you're in for a wild ride. That's what I get each and every time, and the thing most recommend you try as a first-timer. It's fudge-y goodness surrounded by chocolate cupcake upon chocolate frosting with chocolate shavings adorning the top. Unfortunately, everyone can tell you what it is... but you'll have to try it for yourself. Simply Phe-NOM-enal! And I'm not a big fan of chocolate. I wanted cake on my birthday and my husband knows how much i love chocolate so he went to Ladybird and picked up a mini blackout cake. I haven't had a blackout cake since Entenmann's used to sell it and I used to love it. Their version was divine and brought me back to remembering how much I love blackout cake! It's a rich cake, so size wise you can get 4 portions out of it. The cake was so delicious! It wasn't overly sweet so it was perfectly balanced. Moist chocolate cake layers in between rich chocolate pudding encompassed in chocolate ganache. It was just heavenly. He also picked up a couple of scones for breakfast which were quite good, but a bit on the cakey side. The cherry almond version used fresh cherries (vs. dried) and the maple walnut had a good maple flavor. Overall some great stuff, I highly recommend the blackout cake. read more

Ladybird is one of my favorite bakeries. It's a small little place with about 3 spots to sit inside and a bench outside. The folks behind the counter are consistently friendly and helpful and they have a large selection of pastries to choose from. Every item I've had has been tasty, but nothing compares to the Brooklyn Blackout cake. It is my favorite cake. They offer it in 3 different sizes as well as in cupcake form. While the cupcake is incredible, I enjoy the cake more because there is more of the actual chocolate cake to it whereas the cupcake has a lot of the chocolate pudding filling up the inside. Apart from the cake, the orange marble loaf was a standout for me. Prices are middle of the road for bakeries around these parts. Many items are $3-5 and whole cakes are more. They do however offer a small selection of leftover items wrapped in plastic wrap that are a great value at $1 a piece. If you're a fan of chocolate cake, you should absolutely go get yourself a Brooklyn Blackout cake. Last I checked the small cake is $11. And if you enjoy your experience, try some of their other items. read more

Ladybird knocked it out of the park with a minimally detailed cake order! This was my first time calling for a cake and only my second time visiting the shop. Flavor selection was easy and the person assured me, when I asked, that my choices made sense together. I told them the inscription and name and chose flowers over balloons. I was nervous before getting it, as I realized that I hadn't said (and they didn't ask) whether it was for an adult or youngster. They also hadn't asked if I wanted the decorations in any particular colors, although I could have made that request when I called. A quick aside: They (understandably) required a credit card number when I placed the phone order (which is a *huge* plus over my usual go-to bakery, which does not take phone orders) but didn't charge me until I came to pick it up. I was absolutely thrilled with the decoration, mature, beautiful, and quite different than usual florets, leaves, vines/ribbons (see pic). At the party, all the guests loved the design and it got rave reviews from the birthday honoree and all the guests. The waitress even asked me where I got it, as she, too, loved the exterior and the look of the inside. She was astounded that the frosting was buttercream and not fondant, and went on to tell me her opinion on fondant cakes. Only small disappointment was that the seasonal cake menu on the website is being "phased out," so I wasn't able to get a particular seasonal creation (which may or may not have even been "in season" at the time).
