I feel like this place would be a wonderful diner if it had more menu items to choose from (I'm a vegetarian, so perhaps that's my own fault), and if it served a decent amount of whatever food you order for the price. I've always left still feeling really hungry, but not willing to spend any more than I already have. Might just be due to my plate choices. The pie's pretty good though! Hubs and I stopped in for a late breakfast, place was jumping but we were fine with the counter so were seated quickly. We liked the eclectic service staff, they all seemed to have a modern/retro vibe going on, everyone nice and friendly. We liked the decor as well, classic old style downtown building with brick and stone walls that were probably exterior walls once upon a time and the embossed tin ceiling. Also had great retro type salt & pepper shakers, reminded me of my grandmothers collection! Food - hubs ordered the short stack which are pancakes at their finest, huge, hot and tender. I ordered the chicken fried steak with cheese grits. They use coarse ground grits which were great, the over easy eggs were perfect, the peppers on top were superb. If I was to order the dish again, I'd ask for the gravy on the side as there was just so much of it and it takes away from the crispy on the steak. As far as the steak, it was ok, the breading slipped off the steak in big sheets when it was cut which indicates a flaw in the breading process and the steak itself had no seasoning. So if the breading had stayed on the steak, it would have been fine, but with all the gravy things got a bit muddled and I ended up with naked steak chunks. It was an absolutely huge plate of food though, and we asked for an extra plate right away so hubs could have half. It would easily feed 2 hungry people. Hubs had coffee which had a nice flavor, not just standard Bunn diner coffee. It was good, flavorful and not bitter at all. The vibe of the place is great, folks of all sizes, shapes, ethnicities, and age eating up that home made food. We loved the experience of eating at the counter, everyone on the sides of us were friendly and talkative. I guess that's what counters are for, sure makes it easy to say hello to someone when you're sitting down beside them to break bread. We were too full to even think about PIE but I hear this place has it going on as far as pie. I didn't see any pies or a bakery counter, if we had, we probably would have taken a pie home, but we were too full to even think of it without having a visual to prompt our little piggy hearts. Overall, we'd definitely go back, a very enjoyable meal, it would have been an easy 5 stars if the steak hadn't had a slippage problem. read more

I ordered the chicken fried streak breakfast and my companions ordered the biscuits and gravy. Two of us ordered mimosas at brunch. The food was super greasy and the two of us who ordered mimosas got food poisoning. The absolute worst food poisoning I've ever experienced in my life. This is the only food/drink we had all day. Oh, Ladybird, I can't believe I've neglected you so long! My boys and I decided to have lunch out today, and my son suggested Ladybird, stating he had enjoyed lunch here with a college friend. I had tried to eat here once before, but the line was so long, I moved on and just didn't think of going back. My mistake! My sons both ordered a breakfast lunch that even a teenager couldn't finish. It consisted of HUGE pancakes, a pile of thick bacon, sausage, and eggs. They both raved. I ordered the chicken friend steak. It was actually two big steaks, served on a pile of hashbrown. It was covered in a delicious pepper gravy and accompanied by two eggs. I ate about half, but I wanted to keep going! It was soooooo good. Seriously haven't had a chicken fry that good in Lawrence since Don's Steakhouse closed. On the way out, we stopped to look at the donuts, and they gave us one since there were about to close. I was too full to enjoy it, so we brought it home. I just ate it, and OMG! Delicious. If you are looking for lunch on a budget, this isn't the place for you. The total price with food and drinks for three came to about $50.00. If you are looking for a great meal, with enough on the plate to make two meals, give this diner a try. I've unfortunately only been here once, but I certainly intend to go back. Ladybird Diner is a throwback to the old town diners of yesteryear. The decor is sweet with vintage salt and pepper shakers and the waitresses wearing kitschy aprons. They have a full service bar that gives the diner a modern flair. The menu serves down-home meals you'd expect at a greasy spoon but with some modern elements and fusion updates. Of particular note are their desserts! They have a variety of pies, kid-friendly creative milkshakes and gorgeous made to order cakes. The owner, Mama Meg, is the creative force behind the diner and she's often there greeting customers. This spot is a welcome addition to downtown Lawrence. read more

I will never ever go back to this restaurant. If your looking for a perfect plate of chicken fried steak w/ gravy, eggs your way and your choice of hash-browns or cheesy grits then this is it. My friend that was with me had the short stack of pancakes and yes it is a rather short stack of dinner plate sized pancakes that he throughly enjoyed. The wait staff made sure my glass was never empty and it was nice and clean. Good homemade food that will kill a person. I suffered 3 heart attacks just eating my breakfast and YES it was worth each bite. The main complaint I would have is that their online menu doesn't match their house menu but there still was plenty of things to choose from. I will dream fondly of this restaurant as I walk past but I can never go back. It truly is that good. read more

This is one of our family's favorite places in Lawrence. Super friendly staff, delicious food, fun atmosphere. I don't eat red meat, so my favorites are the chicken sandwich with a side of coleslaw or the spring potato hash. Don't forget their delicious milk shakes, bloody Marys and other good cocktails. My kid always wants to go here for the pancakes or chicken strips. They also have one of the best burgers in town (at least according to people I know)--and there are a lot of burger places in Lawrence. read more

The food was decent, but I was involved in a disappointing incident while there. In walking to the bathroom, I thought I felt a slick spot on the floor. Upon returning, I definitely hit the spot wrong, & fell, bruising my knees, & unable to catch myself, hit my forehead on the floor. A busboy witnessed the incident, asked if I was ok, but didn't offer assistance. When I said, "that floor is slick" he said, "I know." I replied, "you'd better get a mop out." The proof of the greasy floor was on my oil stained jeans. I didn't want to make a fuss since I was there with friends celebrating a birthday. I was shocked when my fall was never acknowledged. I finally asked our waitress for an ice pack for my head. She apologized, but management was never called to the table. Very disappointing experience. I definitely won't be back. I still have a lump on my forehead 5 hours later. read more

We went on a holiday. Very busy, we had no problem waiting for our food, however the waitress was very curt, short and rude! I am giving a 3 star rating based my limited experience with the diner. First I have never eaten a meal there, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I have purchased doughnuts 2 times, and inquired about the take home pies. I will give the meals a try too be fair, and the reviews do indicate a lot of people like Lady Bird. The idea of 'homemade' donuts seemed great, however regrettably for my taste the doughnut(sans glaze) itself was really without much taste. I did not pay much attention to the price. The next time I, purchased 2 doughnuts, gave the waitress a $5 bill, and got .35 cents in change. I was wow. that much but did not say anything. This would be at least $25 dollars for a dozen? These too were bland. I also had heard about the pies. I asked about the cost. Again I was shocked of the cost. It was either $25 or $27, I am not sure which. I declined. Seems way too pricey to me. Maybe a single piece with coffee, but wonder what cost would be for this. Now, again this place deserves a fair shake, and I will go to have a breakfast or other meal there. I like the whole concept, the "feel' of the place. I does seem like Lawrence-like if you know what I mean.. and I like that. LadyBird, I really want to like you a whole bunch, I hope I will when I eat a meal there. For example, I used to love the Paradise Cafe that closed I believe in 2004, for breakfast at least it was fantastic, and had that ambiance, and I think was at 728 Massachusetts. read more
