I visited this shop last year to replace a part on my 2017 Subaru and requested an alignment, for which I was charged $100. At the time, I was traveling to LA and didn't have the opportunity to return and follow up on some unresolved issues. Unfortunately, those problems resurfaced this year, likely due to the incomplete work from that visit. I decided to give the shop another chance a few weeks ago, but in hindsight, I was mistaken to be swayed by the low prices. I requested a diagnostic, but instead of a thorough evaluation, I was referred to the dealership. The dealership conducted their own diagnostics--adding to my expenses--and ultimately repaired the issue, which the shop had initially suggested replacing entirely, without exploring alternative solutions. While this shop may appear cost-effective, I've learned that cheaper isn't always better. Sometimes, the lower upfront cost ends up being more expensive in the long run. Our Ford Focus needed a new clutch so we took it to Lafayette Auto. As always John accurately estimated the cost and the time. While he had the car apart he noticed the brakes needed relining and he offered to change the oil and oil filter. Since he already had the car apart he charged us half price for the brake job. I have hired I don't know how many mechanics over the years. I was so fed up with bad work, dishonest mechanics and outrageous prices that I started doing all my own auto repair. I got to where I know pretty much what has to be done to fix a car. So when I got too old to climb around under a car anymore, I needed to find someone I can trust do the work. Took my Subaru Outback for a second opinion on front brakes and rotor replacement recommended elsewhere. Lafayette Auto did an inspection and said I do not need brakes and nothing was wrong with the rotors (other shop said the rotors were warped). Should've written a review for these guys a long time ago. Rarely...RARELY in life will you EVER find an auto mechanic who will actively SAVE you money. These guys have actually saved me money. It bares mentioning that you'll just never see these words put together in these sequences in life, hardly ever. At least I've never seen the sequence of words 'an auto mechanic who will save you money' before. The place down the street wanted to do my radiator on my old used Lexus for $600! Lafayette auto repair put it in for like $225 or close to that (I know it was no more than $250.. I remember it was close to one third what these other guys wanted). For valve adjustment this guy down in Dublin where I live now just quoted $800. Mike at Lafayette autobody quoted me around $350. If you want a latte and a massage while you wait, this is not the place for you. These guys work for a living so that's what you'll get. But, if you want honesty & integrity, then this is the place you want to take your car. read more

I was a customer of John's for several years, but now realize what a serious mistake that was. John touts how other mechanics charge to much and want to do work that is unnecessary. He repaired by BMW and Volvo for several years. I had an oil leak in the BMW which is continued to try and fix with very little work and apply sealant. He assured me that this is the best approach. AFter a while, I lost faith that he could fix it and took the car to another mechanic. The other mechanic noted significant areas of oil leaks and was aghast that in a BMW someone would apply sealant as a long term fix. There is not question that my car needed serious work that John ignored or just preferred not to do more heavy lifting (if you dont want to do the heavy lifting, just tell me!). $3600 later, my car runs beautifully, no leaks. John would rather just try and plug problems than fix them. On my Volvo, an even bigger issue. John recommended that we replace our front brakes and rotors, which he did. The brakes never felt right -- soft, kind of hard to stop. Anyway, we assumed it was a job well done and it is just our imagination. After the BMW incident, my Volvo made a couple funny sounds and we took it to the new mechanic (Lafayette German Auto Repair - very impressed by the way). They noted the problem and what was needed to fix it. Also noted we need new tires. They removed the tires and saw that JOHN HAD PUT THE WRONG ROTORS ON THE CAR. The rotors are too small for the car -- had limited contact with the brake pads. Could be very dangerous. He was amazed. He replaced the brakes and rotors and gave us the parts back so we could provide them to John to get our money back. So, what i have learned is that if a repair shop looks like crap and has crappy cars all over it and the inside is a shambles, the invoice is a mess and the price is too good to be true....run away. Because you are now at Lafayette Auto Repair! You get what you pay for, and sometimes you don't even get that. read more

I see that many people love these guys. I went here because they were recommended by a professional in the area with whom I do business. John cheated me and then lied about it. Here is what happened: At first, they did a good job. Then I needed to have a Body Control Module replaced in a handicap van I had purchased for use with my parents before they passed. The modules themselves are about $700. They charged me that and labor which came to over $1,000. Well, they did NOT follow the law and turn in the old module for a new one. Only authorized dealers can sell them because they are the component that tracks the mileage and the old one must be turned in where the authorized seller transfers the mileage to the new BCM. When I went to pick up the car, it turned out they had put in a USED BCM from a junker. The mileage on it was over 172,000 miles -- my actual mileage was under 69,000 at the time. I complained and when I asked where the module came from, John kept making up stories about "the place out on Diablo Blvd near Pittsburg, the Dealer (who had closed by then) etc. He just lied and lied. I took the vehicle back and instead of getting a new module and fixing it the right way, he TAPED a PAPER over the electronic mileage display with mileage written on it, and put some sort of DMV form on the door jamb -- which had no legal import whatsoever. I ended up taking the vehicle to the DEALER, where they used the Power Train Control Module to estimate the mileage -- which is a LEGAL way to set the mileage when the BCM is inaccurate or can't get a reading. They put in a new BCM and I paid over $1100 to get the work done. I should have sued John -- as a lesson to him not to lie and cheat people. I gave him every opportunity to confess what he did when I first called by asking him very politely that maybe there was a mistake, etc. But he just kept lying to me. Having just buried both my parents and being extremely busy and in mourning, I decided not to do anything about it at the time. It wasn't worth the extra stress even though it was a LOT of money. My car needs an oil change. Seeing the positive reviews on Yelp! I called Lafayette Auto Repar and schedule an appointment for a few days later. I show up at the appointment time and am toid my oil change will take 2 hours. Really? I can go anywhere, without an appointment and get a 2 hour oil change. Ok. I get an estimate of $60. This is the same as what my dealer charges. Ok. Almost 2 hours later I go to pick up my car. The charge is now $80 because there is a fee for turning off the engine maintenance light. The light comes one when I need an oil change, as it does on most cars. There was no mention of this up front. Wow. I never thought I would ever speak the words `Go to the dealer and save money` but these guys have made it happen. Honestly, I`d hate to see what the unexpected extra charges would be when I need some actual work done. Service was courteous, but then I`d be smiling too if I were charging $80 for an oil change. read more

I LOVE this place. Honest, friendly and awesome! I took my car in on Monday and got some issues with my fuel pump replaced, they did they work quickly and for a great price. Unfortunately the next day on my drive home from work my check engine light came on so I brought my car in first thing this morning. They fixed the issue which was a glitch happening with a computer memory component (no fault of their own) gave me a call, explained the issue and let me know that my car was ready to pick up FREE of charge. John charged me $80 for an oil change with inspection (the kind that's normally done with an oil change - he said he'd do a quick version because I was waiting with my baby). I'm used to paying $35- $40 at a place nearby for the same service. John's price included a $20 charge for resetting the "maintenance needed" light on the dash, something which takes about 15 seconds to do. Other places do this for free, without even mentioning it. Based on the great reviews of John, and this "amazing prices" and the look of the place (humble), I didn't think to ask for an estimate before-hand. That was a mistake. I was really disappointed with the bill, and it expressed it to John, but to no avail. Good lesson though: always ask for an estimate before getting any work done. read more
