I Don't even know how they have 4 stars at all!My son got a flat and AAA towed his vehicle to This place because it was near by where he got a flat all he needed to do was patch his tire up! Before he even arrived he called the place to ask if they can patch up his flat tire and explained the Situation (mind you it's 4 brand new tires bought 2 months ago on this car!) the guy said come On down when my son got there and greeted him the guys tone and demeanor changed! Another customer who got played by this shop. I had a battery under warranty that AAA would have replaced for free and honestly, the car drove fine and never had starting issues. This guy tells me that my car's battery can break anytime and I need to get one immediately. He charged me over $500 for a battery replacement out of which $155 was just "installation labor". I could have just gotten the battery and installation for FREE from AAA because of the warranty. All in all, I paid over $750 for an oil change and battery for a 2015 Subaru. Absolutely deceptive business and they have no regret for their unethical practice for a customer who lives around the corner. Never going there again and informed my neighbors as well. read more

After some consideration, I've decided it is time I talk about my experience a couple of years ago. I came here twice for an oil change, with no issues with either of them before this fiasco. The third time I went, I came back home with my car and noticed the engine bay starting to smoke. I lift the hood to see the matter, and the oil cap had not been put back on! I called them up and asked them to clean up the engine bay, which they did, but the smoke was still coming out. The second time I brought it back to the shop, they cleaned up all of the oil, and the smoke stopped coming out. Needless to say, I have not returned since that last experience. read more

This was my second time having my car (first was a 2009 Infiniti G37, second was a 2016 Nissan Rogue, so pretty standard/not out of the ordinary) serviced at Greg's and it won't be the last! Both times I've walked away feeling fairly dealt with, and confident that the services done on my car were top notch (and at better prices and more personal attention than the dealer). Would I come here just for an oil change? No - you can find a better $$$ deal elsewhere. But for tune ups and inspections, absolutely. Also just because other reviews touch on it, no work is performed unless you OK it. Are some things pricier (wiper replacements, for example) here than they would be somewhere else? Sure. Don't have them do it here if it is an issue. I will continue to go to Greg's for any ongoing maintenance or issues as they arise. Thank you for another great experience! read more

Caveat Emptor If you don't mind spending $100 in labor (plus materials) to replace windshield wipers, by all means throw your money away in this establishment. They claimed it took 40 mins to replace three wiper blades (or at least that is what was charged given the $150/hour labor John said was appropriate). Upon reading other reviews, I see my 85 year old mother isn't the only person to have a similar experience. I'm truly disappointed they would take advantage of an elderly woman who didn't know any better. She was charged $120 for an oil change, $104 for cabin air filter, $170 for wiper blades, and $205 for brake fluid exchange (relatively cheap given the other charges, but likely an unnecessary upsell). BTW, this service charge was for a 4 year old Fiat 500 with less than 13k miles truly driven by the little old lady who takes it shopping and to church. Shame on John and Greg's Automotive. Enough said. You have been forewarned. read more

I would give Greg's automotive as zero if I could! They charged me $1300 for a clutch -and when my car came back it was leaking all over. It never leaked at all until after I brought it to them! I Purchased that vehicle brand new and it has 75,000 miles on it. The whole clutch was overpriced to begin with! when I questioned the mechanic he said I must've ran over something or it was my fault it wasn't at all they took it apart and they damaged it. Okay. So I took a candy bar and have to review. Haha I took my car in for an oil change. Took them 4 hours to do it. Longest I've ever waited for an oil change. But that is not my issue with this company. I was called during the oil change and told that my break fluid needed to be changed and they could do it while they had my car. I said no because I had just gotten it done 3 months prior. I wasnt sure which company was lying because gregs auto said that there was no record of the break fluid being changed on my car fax report. So I was worried that the other company charged me for a service they didnt perform. So I called the other company and they said to bring it in and they would fix change it. So the next day I took it to the other company and they tested my break fluid. (While I was watching them and they even gave me the test results) and it tested clean. My break fluid was not dark at all. It was really clean. Gregs auto lied and made up a problem hoping I'd just say to fix it so they could make extra money. So now I'm completely terrified that they are a shady company so I checked my oil... and it appears that they may have (I say may have because i have no proof) instead of changing my oil they just topped it off. Because its pretty gritty and still appears slightly dirty. I will never take my car to them again. The service is slow. And they arent honest. If you choose to go here for an oil change check and compare. Meaning look at your dirty oil before you take it in and check it when you leave. If they recommend stuck ask for proof. I.e filters and testers for stuff. I assume they give you a discounted oil change so they can upsell you with other odd maintenance needs that arent really needing change, or service. read more

He then asked me for the vin on the car and when I told him I did not have it he quoted me a price of "less than a million ". That was pretty disgusting. I have had both good and bad with them. So I am in the middle. First, I found out my truck break lights went out and took it in. They figured out the problem and repaired it the same day. However since some of my brake lights were also blown. they claimed they couldn't let the truck go unless all the lights were replaced. This could be true by law I am not sure. Either way they diagnosed and got the job done the same day and I picked up my car that night. Second, I was disappointed in them on this one. I called to see about scheduling my car for a tune up. I proceed to ask them how much a typical tune up would cost for my car. The person on the phone almost sounded disgusted that I even asked that question. Like " I can't believe your calling and then asking for a quote". He said he would call me back and I never heard back from them again. I live on a budget so I need to know what to prepare for. Sometimes people trying to make money just don't understand that. Would I go back, yes and no. It depends on the situation. They get the job done when needed and professionally. They (Gregs automotive services) actually went to my husband's place of business and asked him, to please remove my yelp review. 3:47 PM 6/28/2020, 11:55 AM Thu, Jun 25, 9:40 PM (3 days ago) Looked up materials online and found: 70-450% mark up on similar parts. Could not get an update on my truck, and he said, "Don't call me. I'll call you when it's done.", and it took ten days to fix my truck, my livelihood, during which we lost thousands of dollars of income. Fixed parts that didn't need to be fixed imo. Brought it in day before my birthday, and that am, he misdiagnosed the problem and said, "It's a rear wheel bushing." I told him it was the differential, and asked if I could drive it out without doing much damage until he got parts for bushing. He didn't believe me and didn't check the differential by removing the plate cover. The differential blew up later that day, and caused way more damage than if he had checked it, and I had to pay: $750 to tow the truck back to mechanic. then he charged me $7,900 and change and took ten days to do the work and it was pulling teeth to get him to update, or work on the truck at all. Also recommenced tie rod end should be replaced when I replaced both about a year and a half ago. More mark up than the dealers charge, and less service! Refused to accept any responsibility for the bad diagnosis, and listed a charge to me $138 for it! Wow. Also told me a tie rod needed work when I had both replaced recently. Also on top of all else, truck engine was clacking like never before, I brought it in, while cold, and then stopped at it warmed up as if an exhaust pipe was damaged or loosened during the work, and he claimed it was clacking when I brought it in. There was no way he even checked it when it was cold, and never recommended it be fixed, as the truck was not driveable after it was towed into his shop, and was not cold at all when he drove it other than after he did the work, so how could he claim, that it was there when I brought it in? It was not driveable at all until he did the work and not cold when he checked the truck first day. It's call lying imo. And refusing to take responsibility for bad diagnosis that cost me thousands more damage imo, after I drove it off and it blew up the same day, and the damage to the exhaust that is not causing the clacking imo. Going to file a complaint with the bureau of automotive repair, gregs' automotive services, lafayette ca., ford truck e 350 super duty dual axle, truck repair, lafayette, oakland, concord, walnut creek, and charged about $5,800 for parts, that I suspect cost him about $1,500-2,000. read more

If I could give Greg's Automotive more than 5 stars, I would. We called them based on the 5-star yelp reviews when our 2006 Infiniti QX56 starting making a metal-on-metal grinding sound the day before we left for a vacation. John at Greg's got us in immediately, diagnosed and fixed the problem while we were away, and had our car fixed -- AND washed and vac'd -- ready for us when we returned. He communicated with us while on our trip via email and text, and sent us thorough results of the inspection, and detailed information of what was wrong with the car. In the past we have always gone to the Infiniti dealership for repairs, because we were wary of private repair shops. Never will we go to a dealership again for anything! I thought they only did exhaust for many years until I was referred by Diablo Services across the street... Really awful experience here. Service manager, John, is calm and mild-mannered, but I paid over $4K for my head gasket to be replaced on my Prius. About a week after they took my money and "repaired" the car, my engine imploded (as I was driving across the Dumbarton bridge). I had it towed (at my expense) back to Greg's Automotive and they said, "This happens very rarely. Coolant leaked into the cylinder and it compromised the connecting rod. It does happen from time to time but we didn't see anything and couldn't have known." This oversight resulted in a completely damaged engine. Now, it's been at least two weeks that they've had my car. They won't give me the name of their insurance carrier so that I can file a claim. And every time I call, John tells me, "I'm swamped." Very disappointed. Others beware! If something bad happens, you will get a runaround. Per my insurance company, I am filing a complaint with the BAR. read more

Left my vehicle with them to get a quote on a repair. They never called me all day and finally before close I called them. They said they were ready and I can come get it. They were not prepared and made me wait longer. The quote they gave me was astronomical. This place really seems to me a place that over charges the rich folk of Lafayette who know nothing about cars and/or are unwilling to do anything themselves. The part quote was 4-5 times more than getting the parts yourself from any parts store or online retailer. Steer clear unless you have money to burn. read more

Cost me 300$ (rounded up my 2.5 hours) of labor to diagnose my car. Took 9 days just to figure it out and Quoted me $~2.5k. Take it to a another shop, free to diagnose, 1 day and only 1400$ to fix what Greg's said the problem was. But the funny part is they couldn't find any issues with the part Greg's said was faulty. I'm extremely disappointed with this service, it could have been a mistake or on purpose. But when you charge more than everyone else, at least get it right. If you wanna throw money down the drain, Go to Greg's or I would just stay at home and use the toilet. read more

His price on the hitch itself (a Curt aftermarket hitch, which is what everyone uses) was higher than the installed price from the most expensive other installer I spoke to. If zero stars were available I would give it to them. We took a car in for inspection that we were hoping to purchase. Every time I would try to speak he would freeze as if I was rudely interrupting him and then continue on exactly where he left off. The prices tripled from that of a normal shop. I do not even use yelp yet I felt the need to let the public know how bad this shop is. During the "inspection" they even missed a huge screw in the tire. After taking the vehicle elsewhere and telling them about the problems Greg's had found they told me almost half of them didn't exist. Based on a recent visit, beware of the "sell up" in this establishment! yes you might need something done. However, just maybe the recommendation from greg's is more than is needed, sooner than its needed, and with a large measure of doom and gloom predicted should you fail to heed the warnings. After leaving Greg's we consulted a long time mechanic in the town from which we moved who had serviced the car on an ongoing basis. Our former mechanic, with nothing to gain, walked us each recommendation from Greg's...We chose to pass on all of them as either unnecessary or premature. We won't be going back to Greg's. I have no ulterior motive here, I am simply relating facts of an incident for customer awareness. I have never been a customer. . but this is on behalf of my mother who was, and she was an honorable person who just did not lie. Approximately 12 years ago her car was running rough and she took it here, mainly for the reason that she knew Greg & his family from when they lived on our street many years prior. That in itself seemed to be a recommendation to her, although any contact was far in the past. He barely remembered her. So she as a senior citizen left her car there for diagnosis and was later told of multiple repairs and parts replacements necessary... a sizable amount of $$. Thankfully she felt uneasy about that and took her car someplace else for a second diagnosis, where it turned out only a minor part replacement was necessary! It seems clear they were trying to take advantage of an elderly lady. She was pretty upset about that but never confronted Greg (as the shop owner) about it at the time, although I urged her to do so.. She thought there was perhaps a possibility he was unaware of what his employees did.. although as owner he had, and does have, ultimate responsibility. and accountability. I see from other reviews this is not an isolated incident of questionable integrity and business practices regarding false claims & unnecessary charges over the years. Beware ! Greg's Automotive is the only place I take my vehicles for service & repair. They do an excellent job at a reasonable price. I have been going here for over 10 years. Recently, my car had an electrical failure while I was at a stop light in Walnut Creek during lunch hour. I was stranded, blocking traffic and receiving honks and the bird from angry motorist as they drove around my broken vehicle. I called Greg's immediately. He arranged for a tow truck to pick up my car and bring it to his shop. I waited only ten minutes for deliverance. Greg's shop diagnosed the problem quickly--a failed part they were able to replace and have me back in my car later that day. I thought the bill would be astronomical but it was way less than I expected as well as way less than I was willing to pay. I appreciate Greg's honesty and excellent customer service.
