Last week I was pulled over by Sergeant Macdonald for not having a properly displayed license plate. I pulled over safely and I had my driver's license ready but my insurance and registration were on the back of the plate because I am a car dealer. Sergeant Macdonald was very respectful and thorough with her inspection of my vehicle and credentials. The reason why I went out of my way to write this review is that I feel like police officers in general probably don't get recognition by the public. Got an accident and am currently still waiting on the police to arrive when it's literally been an hour and a half and we've called them 9 times. Said it was because of shift change which is literally no excuse for a police department. 5 different police officers have driven past us and we've even waved them down. What a joke. I have lived here since 1980 and I only wish that everyone on this site would have the privilege of signing up for a 2x or 3x a year with a courtesy course to learn how our security forces are taking care of us and surrounding area. I don't know if this inside information class is still being offered but you will come away with nothing less than GRATitude AND A KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT IS BEING DONE TO PROTECCT LAFAYETTE AND THE BAY AREA. I needed to do a long distance equipment pickup, property left for me at the police station when I briefly left the country. At the time, all I knew is that my belongings were left for me at the Lafayette Police station. The Sergeant at Lafayette PD was extremely helpful by email and guiding me through the process, paperwork, certifications through Sacramento licensing agencies, and general helpful advice. If anyone decides to bash or speak negatively of any law enforcement officer I would suggest that you walk in his or her shoes for a little bit. Honestly, I don't think you would be writing negative reviews... I was hit by a car this morning while I was walking across the street with a hot and delicious Cafe Mocha. I had pressed the walk signal button, the walk light had turned white, I had looked both ways... and 3 steps into the crosswalk I was on the hood of someone's car!. sadly, the mocha was a total loss. I was ok, though a bit shaken and bruised. several people stopped as witnesses, called 911 and within 3 minutes of being hit... there were 3 cop cars and a sheriff's dept car onsite. All of the police were polite, efficient and sympathetic to the driver and myself... they waited with me while the paramedics were on their way and did a great job of taking care of the situation without completely fucking up the morning commute for everyone. they even measured the distance my coffee was thrown from the point of impact (30ft). I was actually stunned by how pleasant the entire experience was (excluding being hit and rolling off the hood of a moving car) hooray lafayette police! read more

Lafayette law enforcement is a collection of grossly unprofessional, incompetent, self-righteous officers, actively training a younger class of police to exhibit the same unacceptable behavior. [I will update with badge numbers as soon as I can track down the information.] I moved out here from Minneapolis, after my girlfriend's 24 year old sister passed away a year ago this week. Unfortunately, the tragedy has spurred the parents, a dentist and a child psychologist, into increasingly greater levels of emotional and physical abuse toward both me (24 year old, independent, professional, working hard to build a life in the Bay) and their daughter (27 year old, dependent, struggling with the death of her sister). One of the abuse tactics particularly favored by the parents is the threat of homelessness to their daughter, while hurling a slew of unprovoked and demeaning pejoratives, as the dentist father "restrains" the daughter to avoid "domestic violence" by dragging her to the ground, from her bed, and digging a knee into the small of her back. Meanwhile, mom phones the police, feigning shock and terror, to request backup for the "mentally ill and violent" daughter. I've now witnessed and tried to mediate this routine on 4-5 separate occasions. Nearly every time the police arrive, they posture annoyance and not once have they sought deeper understanding into this horribly destructive environment. They handcuff the daughter and wave threats of arrest, although they never follow through, preferring a 51/50. They spend 20 min subjecting me to verbal and emotional abuse, saying things like, "No one wants you here, you lowlife, piece of sh**", "Relationships like this never last, why are you dating this girl?", "You think these folk [the parents] should put up with you? Get a job! [I have a job]", etc. On one occasion, as they began to process the daughter for a wholly fictitious "domestic assault", I was told by one rare and upstanding younger officer that they aren't able to kick me out, but it'd be best if I left for awhile. As I readied to comply, Mr. Veteran Cop arrived, initiated his ritual of abuse, asked the father, "Has he threatened you? It sounds like he's threatening you", laughed as the father replied, "Yeah, as a matter of fact, he has threatened me!", forcing me to stand shoeless in the rain and to abandon my work computer. It was at this point that Veteran Cop realized they were processing for assault, and that there would be follow-up and a record, and exclaimed, "Oh sh*t, are you kidding me? Why did I even head out here. G*d d**n it." He dismissed the younger officer, saying, "I'll take her in." Then negotiated yet another 51/50 with the parents. Where is the oversight? It'd be great to see some productive problem solving, or a general sense of humanity on behalf of our peace guardians. I, for one, am tired of being called worthless scum by the people dedicated to protect the weak and vulnerable. Alas, it happened again today, and the parents are validated one more time. I even overheard one cop comment, "This guy [the dentist father] can't control himself. I've told him to stay inside three times." When my girlfriend asked, "They can't just lock me out at 7a, can they? Am I doing anything illegal?" The cop stood silent for a few seconds and replied, "You know what? You wanna go to the hospital?" read more

Something happened in our neighborhood yesterday that has me beaming with pride at our local police. Our neighbors house was broken into at around 1:45 pm while she was in the shower. She heard noises and figured out it was a break-in and called 911. The operator told her "Police are already there." We live on a main street in Lafayette and an officer was driving by and noticed something amiss at her residence. I'm not sure whether it was the strange car parked at a weird angle in her driveway, or four people who looked out of place or what. Whatever it was, he noticed and stopped. We were coming home from lunch and traffic was stopped in front of her entrance. We noted several Lafayette police cars as well as Moraga, Orinda, and BART cars. There was also an unmarked car with its lights on (I won't give away the make and model) and for reasons we can't understand, the Orinda Taxicab. We joked that it took the BART police to come to scare the four invaders into giving up (all were caught and arrested), but we are truly proud to have whoever the officer was who was paying attention looking out for all of us. Further, the police chief came and spoke with our neighbor and gently counseled her about how she would feel later and what she would likely go through after having her home invaded. She said it meant a heck of a lot to her that he cared enough to do that and felt that at least she was as safe as she could be knowing she lived in a town in which the police pay attention and have our safety in mind. Tell these cops to do their job. I just got scammed by 2 people rolling around in a new Nissan Versa hybrid. No license plates. They claimed to fix the rust on my car. They put wax/putty all over, told me to remove it in 1 hour. Then I did and the rust is still there. WATCH OUT FOR THESE 2 people, their names are Sammy and Sonny. They have LEGIT signage that say Bumper Medics. They even have this phone number on their car: 415-574-1242. read more

The cops I've dealt with in Lafayette are assholes. Very harassing. Pulled me over saying he "paced" me at 50 in a 35 zone. He wasn't ever going the same speed as me! He came flying up doing 60 plus and put his lights on immediately. I was doing 40. This has happened twice. Lafayette PD can suck a dick. They definitely think the badge gives them special privilege. Hmmm. So they didn't indicate in the police report that you were the cause of the accident? That's what they did to my daughter, age 10, who was crossing in a crosswalk on the way to school in Lafayette. Because of the wording on the police report, the driver's insurance company decided not to talk full responsibility for the ambulance ($1,900!) and hospital bills. Attempts to get decent copies of photographs taken by police at the scene have been been fruitless. Glad you were treated well... my daughter was, too. Ya know the saying one bad apple ruins the apple cart - well, N Black it that apple. For the most part the LPD is amazing and we have had wonderful experiences with them - this one officer is grossly unprofessional, aggressive and self-righteous officer. Twice he said he'd cuff me and throw me in jail when I ask him a very valid question. I had to tell him 1) we are in Lafayette not Iraq and 2) he was being very aggressive beyond what was called for. I, a responsible, nice, non-violent citizen of Lafayette keep trying to pay my ticket, even went down to the courthouse to do so but this guy doesn't even have the professionalism to have entered my citation into the system yet - it's been over a month. Good job! Maybe he is too busy to waste his time on such small details - he has a whole lotta house wives to pull over this month! read more

I just spoke on the phone with a supervising officer of the Lafayette Police Dept. and couldn't have been treated better. I had called to make a complaint about an unwarranted traffic stop and it turns out the officer who stopped me was likely with another agency (because he pulled up behind me, I didn't see the jurisdiction on his car so he was probably a CHP officer). But one way or the other, the Lafayette supervising officer I spoke with was polite, helpful, open-minded and from what I could tell, sincerely interested in my experience and feedback. I'm not a Lafayette resident but have been left with a very good impression of their police department. read more

DASH CAMS NEEDED FOR LAFAYETTE POLICE CARS. I really feel that dash cams need to be placed in every Lafayette police car to protect the Lamorinda residents from unethical, overzealous cops. Which brings me to my encounter with Officer B. While traveling home from work, and following 2 other cars, we came to a stop sign in a residential neighborhood. The car in front of me was turning right and moved into the bike lane, then stopped dead. I was behind him, so I moved over about a foot and approached the stop line. I stopped the same way I have stopped at stop signs (without cross-traffic) for 31 years. Officer B. hit his lights and pulled me over. He didn't like the way I "swerved into the other lane". After some discussion, I think I convince him that I never crossed over the line and there was plenty of room in the lane. He then changed the charge to running the stop sign and to "tell it to the judge" when I disagreed. If I would of ran the stop sign, I would of paid the fine and promptly forgotten about this entirely. But instead, I've thought about this every day for the last 2 months. This brings me back to my point of protecting the citizens from cops like Officer B. I made an inquiry to Police Chief Hubbard to see if dash cams were installed, since this would of cleared me without doubt. They don't have them. THE PEOPLE OF LAMORINDA NEED DASH CAMS INSTALLED FOR THEIR PROTECTION This whole event has soured me on Lafayette and I'm loathed to spend any money there. As for the police dept, I know logically that it's only one bad cop, and most likely not pandemic, but as far as I know, Officer B. is still employed there. This reflects poorly on Police Chief Hubbard. read more

How impressive. We went to the police dept on Sunday and it was closed. Does the police dept really close on Sundays? Not in the city I live. There was a running police car in front of the building and we waited 45 minutes for someone to come out, which never happened so we left a note for the officer to call us.
