I left a $20 - still super cheap considering four scoops! Just note, they don't allow samples. 1 of the people in my group did not like monkey mess - she took one bite and asked our hostess if she can get something else immediately. Great ice cream shop in Rye where they make their own ice cream. It's a casual spot with outdoor seating (there are some picnic tables nearby), and cash only. It is a popular local spot for good reason, lots of various flavors and they're always coming up with some new flavor combos or profiles. There are no taste tests though, and only the large size allows you to get 2 flavors. Their Maine blueberry ice cream was delicious with real blueberries and not overly sweet. The ice cream was creamy and had a nice consistency. They also offer some yogurt based and non-dairy options plus soft serve. Would definitely go again if near the area! read more

Lagos has the best ice cream near Portsmouth. They have an awesome range of flavors, from fruity to chocolatey to grape nuts. I LOVE trying their fruit flavors like banana and pineapple. They're super rich and never icy. They always have chunks of real fruit and are absolutely delicious without being too sweet. The service is fast and efficient, although I wish they offered samples. Service was good. The young lady was courteous and quick. There wasn't anything special about the ice cream that you couldn't get somewhere else. I ordered one scoop of rum raisin and one scoop of grape nut in a dish. They served it up in a tall cup making it hard to access the bottom flavor. The rum raisin wasn't very good. Not much rum, not much raisins. The grape nut was very good though. It was a favorite amongst my group as was the blueberry. Both were flavorful and creamy. I really don't like the concept of a cash only business, which has a funky looking ATM machine sitting right out front in the event that you need to get cash desperately in order to buy that businesses product. Although I don't wanna make this, a political review, becoming cashless has been talks of the government for ages and although I know it will never happen. I feel that these companies that go cash only should do as many do and just charge a percentage premium if you decide to use plastic. As for the ice cream .... Not many options on the dairy free/lactose free variety which as well as becoming more of the norm these days. I find them to be behind their times in this department. In addition, asking for two different flavors and being told that the only way you could do that is in a large cup is ridiculous considering the volume of ice ice cream that they put into the smaller cup I physically watched the girl put two scoops of ice cream into that small cup but this is a way of them up selling you if you want to get more than one flavor. Another poor business tactic if you ask me. During the summer, this place has very long lines indicative of the fact that they have very good ice cream, which they do. However, there's so many other ice cream shops that don't have these ski mix and provide for a better environment all around, which would be my first stop if I was looking for a sweet treat going forward. read more

Outstanding walk-up roadside ice cream stand. Very delicious and creamy ice cream. The portions are immense. Over the top immense. I wanted two flavors so I had to get a large, which is a bit ridiculous. They should offer a smaller option to get two flavors. A large comes in a large fast food drink cup totally filled with ice cream. I had to, very sadly, throw away half of the top scoop so I could taste the second flavor without bursting. Really a shame and a waste. I got the cow pie which is chocolate ice cream, fudge ripple, chocolate chips, and huge brownie chunks. Devine. Came here when visiting my wife's family back in summer of 2023 and it was absolutely heavenly. Let's get into it... Ambiance - This was an outdoor only place at the time we visited. It looked like they had an indoor area, but it was not open to the public. Nothing else to write about the ambiance as you're pretty much outside in a large open parking lot. Service - The staff were very nice and friendly. Lots of smiles and overall good vibes from the staff. No complaints here. Food - The ice cream was incredible. We stopped here twice over the week that we visited and it was amazing both times. Honestly, I would have stopped here every day if I would have had the authority to do so. The portions were huge, the prices were very reasonable, and it just tasted so darn good. There's just something about homemade ice cream that hits right. Had a great experience at Lago's! Visiting the area and I was excited to see Maine wild blueberry ice cream on the menu. I ordered it and it was soooo good! They have so many other great flavors I want to try too, I must go back! My wife had vanilla soft serve which was good, not spectacular, but I think soft serve isn't their thing really, it's more the homemade hard ice cream. Lago's has some pretty good ice cream which if I remember correctly it's all handmade here. I've been here plenty of times so now here I am finally writing a review!! lol They have so many different flavors to choose from it's pretty impressive. They use to sell food but not anymore. Their indoor seating is closed not sure if it's due to COVID or because they stopped serving food?? They have COVID precautions in place right now outside. The counter employee's take the ice cream orders & tell you how much you owe then another employee will take the money & give change as needed. They use these cute painted rocks for you to set your cash down on the counter & put the rock on top so your money doesn't get blown away & the employee dealing only with the cash transactions comes along to get the money. Right now they are only accepting CASH, but don't worry if you show up with none they have an ATM right on site. They have a rope in front of the windows to prevent customers from getting right up on the counter. They're instructions on where to stand & what to stand on. They still have their picnic tables over on the grass to sit down at but just seeing all that green grass & the woods right next to them it just makes me think of ticks since they're so bad right now. I went yesterday with my Mom & we couldn't even make it to the car with our ice creams due to them quickly melting & making a mess all over us...more so my Mom. The ice cream flavors have alway been very tasty. I don't have a favorite as I usually get something different every time I go. I've been coming here since I was a kid. They definitely don't' skimp on their ice cream. Even a baby or kid cone is a good amount. This place is my favorite place to stop for some ice cream. Let me start by saying we have been going here for over 30 years. Sadly today makes us question if we will go back. The staff were incredibly rude. When we asked about trying a sample as they had a new flavor we were told they no longer did samples, surprising as we have been going for years and they used to do them but okay not a big deal. We then asked about the flavor since we couldn't try it, the employee rolled their eyes as if inconveniencing them and told us it was blueberry - that's it. We passed after that starky comment and ordered another flavor. While we were waiting for our order a gentleman came up to the window to explain that the "no samples" had nothing to do with her and that it's the new policy causing a scene and totally embarrassing us in front of lines of people after we had already moved on and tipped her so clearly we weren't taking anything "out on her" as he alluded to nor were we phased about it. The ice cream itself is great but the terrible customer service really overshadowed our experience today. read more

I was on the area for lunch. Since it was a very hot day I made the " tough" decision to stop for some ice cream : - ) It had been some time since my last visit So I pulled in and noticed not much of a line. Well, if there had been a long one it wouldn't have made much difference. Today was definitely a day to hit an ice cream stand! The flavors are endless and some I would love to have tried. But I can't help but lean on the conservative side & it's rare that I try anything new. My flavor of choice today was cherry vanilla. I ordered the smallest cup. I was served a heaping cup of top quality vanilla studded with colossal dark cherries & I couldn't wait to dig in! Again, it was a very hot day .
