We were walking down Congress Street mid-afternoon and in looking in the window decided to wander in a see if there was something that we might want. We were allowed to have tastes (thanks Chelsea) and my wife and I got 1/2 Chocolate Carmel Fudge and Maple Walnut Fudge and we both loved them. I grew up in the Boston area, so I unfortunately never had the chance to experience a dessert tasting session at Kilwins. At first glance at this cafe, my girlfriend who was familiar with this gem in the DMV area emoted with joy and begged for us to go. I was happy to see there is one in NH. Kilwins has some of the best fudge, flavored chocolates, s'mores I have ever had-- WOWZA! Especially the chocolate covered s'more... getting one was a mistake. My two children and I went to get an ice cream last Friday night (11/21) and the entire staff was so rude! It was 9:50pm and we knew they closed at 10pm and told them we were aware when we went in and they completly rolled their eyes at us. I would've just left then, but we really just wanted an ice cream. We ordered 3 smalls in dishes and were done and paid in 5 minutes. On the way out I joked we had 5 minutes to spare and some older staff lady reiterated "we close at 10". My wife and I drove up to Portsmouth, NH for the day and had a lovely lunch on the water @ Old Ferry Landing. Afterwards we walked all over the downtown area. After an hour or so we stopped by Kilwins for an ice cream. As soon as we walked in the door it was a beautiful shop, and smelled very sweet. The young lady behind the counter, Manuela was very nice to both my wife and I. Her customer service was a 10 out of 10. My wife asked her about the vegan ice cream choices. Then I asked if they had Maple Walnut ice cream, she said unfortunately they did not on. But she recommended her favorite which turned out to be excellent choice. I love it. So as we were waiting to pay we were just standing there waiting for the cash register to come available. Then she told us to come over to the next cash register. As soon as it came open this KAREN, in a Yellow poke a dot dress, freaked out and said I WAS NEXT, I WAS NEXT! I'm sure they could hear her out on the street. I felt so bad for Manuela because the woman was such an ass! I just looked over towards her and NO PROBLEM, you go right ahead. We are in know rush, and she didn't even have the common courtesy to thank us. But at the end of the day, we really don't sweat the small stuff. But that lady had a chip on her shoulder. Amazing ice cream but terrible customer service. The owner's son should stay behind the counter and let his products and his awesome employees speak for him. His totalitarian behavior at the door is a huge turn off for many people. During my last visit I watched 4 groups walk away after being scolded by him. Come on people. As Covid fades in the rearview mirror, families are finally trying to get out and make a nice memory. It's hard to ruin an ice cream trip, but you managed it. Then my husband ordered a mint chip with hot fudge on it. He was given caramel. When he said he ordered hot fudge, the girl insisted he ordered caramel, and begrudgingly switched it out. Want to gain weight? Have a $20 bill burning a hole in your pocket? Then this is the place for you! I didn't think Portsmouth needed another ice cream place, but that hasn't stopped me from eating a whole bunch of it anyway. The pumpkin pie flavor taste amazing. The Kilwin Mud is addictive. The cake batter has real bits of cake in it. The Superman is awesomely fun with lots of bright blue and yellow and other colors swirled together without sacrificing on creamy sweetness. The Pistachio is lovely. Their caramels are really good too ($0.99 by the register). Really sticky though, and prone to melting so don't just toss these in your bag. They have a loyalty card for ice cream - buy 10 I think and get the next one free. THey also let you keep your card there by the register, so you don't have to carry it around all the time and risk losing it. It's expensive though. I really want to try their sea salt turtles, and their coconut clusters, and toffee, and all this other loveliness they have but the turtles are $15 for a small box and after ice cream, caramel apples and such I just never have enough... Good thing summer's over and the outdoor pool is closed. With this place around, I'm not likely to fit into that bikini! read more

Four stars for the ice cream, two for the prices. Sure, everybody's smiling and friendly, and tiny samples of everything are free. But a kiddie-sized ice cream was $3 and the ice cream wasn't all that amazing. The pistachio tasted okay but the overabundance of food coloring was a total turnoff. And the colors of the superman were so ridiculous that I can't imagine anybody older than six or seven considering it. I had the strawberry and it was nice, but the size and the price didn't go together. I could have also tried the fudge and they were making it right there, but fudge is too sweet for me. There are already enough expensive ice cream stores in Portsmouth and there are more on the way. I wish them luck but I can't think of a reason to go here again. Once the tourists leave and it gets cold, is there really going to be enough demand for fudge to pay the rent? Time will tell. read more

When you walk by a store, and there's chocolate smells wafting from it tantalizing your smell receptors, what do you do? You walk in. And then you take a second and stop to smell the chocolate. And then...you indulge. As noted in my profile, I have a slightly unhealthy obsession with caramel, especially sea salt caramel. Caramel came in lots of shapes and sizes at Kilwin's. Sea salt caramel ice cream (I had a kiddie size), sea salt fudge (I bought some), and lots of "tuttles"...a play on turtles (I bought some of those too). That's where I drew the line. Ladies make the fudge fresh daily, and you can see them in the storefront stirring and slabbing the chocolate together to make the gooey goodness.
