Had a sudden taste for ice cream, jumped on yelp to find the best one and boy did we!!! We passed by it pulled a u turn and the parking lot was packed!!! I got the large Sunday with peanut butter cup ice cream and muddy sneaker and it was amazing !!! A very popular ice cream stand on the Seacoast with ample parking out in front. It was a very hot and sunny Saturday afternoon outside, so I pulled into the almost full parking lot for a frappe. Great ice cream, they have lots of flavors to try and during shark week on Discovery channel, they even have a special flavor! The establishment is CASH ONLY so come prepared with a wallet full of bills. If you forget to bring cash there is an ATM in the seating area inside the building. The portion sizes are pretty big and I can usually share a baby size with someone when I need a little ice cream fix. My favorite flavors are Cookie Monster, khalua brownie and black raspberry. I just had the weirdest and most disappointing experience at the ice cream shop I grew up with and have loved for years. As many Lagos lovers know, the sizes are HUGE. A kiddie cup is the size of a small beverage and can easily accommodate multiple flavors of ice cream. I know, because I have been requesting multiple flavors in a kiddie size for years and paying for a large (because their policy says they won't allow you to put two different flavors in the kiddie, even though it fits multiple scoops. I've let this slide thinking it's because their ice cream is great and I'm depleting two different flavors so they'll have to put effort into making two instead of one/price of labor.) For YEARS this has been no problem. Until today. I had the most bizarre and nonsensical rattling off of policy from the scoop girl and then manager about how I could no longer get two different flavors in the kiddie cup like i've been doing for years. Now, if this was about cross contamination and COVID, I would've accepted that answer. But the reason the manager gave me was literally "it's scoops to cup." Um, what? I want to pay you MORE money to put two different flavors of ice cream in a smaller size. I would've given them a $20! This is a time for our brains to engage and say, yes, there is a policy, but we're going to reexamine it because IT MAKES NO SENSE. I WANT TO GIVE YOU MORE MONEY FOR LESS OF YOUR DELICIOUS PRODUCT. I do not want two huge kiddie sizes of different flavors or one large because I'm trying to eat in moderation and most of us do not believe in wasting uneaten food. I'm sad and frustrated and hope Lagos reexamines there nonsensical policy OR reexamines their sizing (the "baby" is the equivalent for a small). The interaction and scolding I had for asking for my ice cream the same way I've had it for years because the wrong people were on shift soured me on going there for a while. And YES - there are far more important things going on in the world, but that's why we should just be able to get the ice cream we want in the size we want - especially if we're willing to pay for it. read more

I've been going to Lago's before it was Lago's. I went there in my teens and I'm now in my 70's. My husband who lived in Rye when he was a teenager as well also went to "The Big Scoop." Tonight we ordered Sundaes. Small ones. Because this place has a habit of piling on the whipped cream we asked for bigger cups to contain it as it has a nasty habit of dropping to the pavement. We were told it wasn't allowed, she could speak to the manager but... My husband who has dementia got his sundae with a tiny cup given to him to avoid a spill and before we got to the car he had pretty much dropped most of his sundae, not just on the pavement but on his cane etc. When we went back to the window to complain we were told that the manager wasn't there? How odd!! Are you really going to tell me that you can't give an elderly gentleman a bigger cup to avoid his losing his dessert because it's not allowed? Shame on you!! Lagos is such a treat during the summer here in Rye NH. You can't not go. The variety of flavors is mind boggling. Every flavor is made there on premise. The quantity is huge. I ordered a "baby" size and I could hardly finish it. But it's unheard of not to. There's always a huge line but a lot of windows are opened so the wait isn't so bad. The ice cream is so creamy you can tell it's made fresh. Since it's only open in the summer, when it's close to closing for the season they give away the left over ice cream. It was ginormous for being a kiddie. Only complaint is that the only size that you can get more than one flavor is a large and I can't imagen how big that would be. I would think with such large portions and so many flavors they would need to let you pick more than one.
