Omg what a cute little book store! The outside of the store is super cute and inviting. The window decorations are super cute too! Inside is cute and intimate but spacious. They have a great selection of books. They also have cute notes from customers about the different books offered. They even have a "blind date with a book" section which is always so cute. In addition to books, they also sell super cute jellycats, and games, puzzles, and card decks based on books. The kid section has chairs for kiddos to sit and read. I love shopping in local bookstores and am happy to purchase books from this store :) read more

What a fantastic bookstore! The route you will find recommendations from the staff with short, write ups and notes on what they loved about the book. When you walk in, they have books wrapped in paper bags for a blind book date. So clever! The staff was so helpful and you receive a bookmark with each book you purchase. Looks are deceiving with this bookstore. To be honest I didn't have high expectations coming here but I was pleasantly surprised when I did. This store is deceptively large and has a ton of books. I even found a couple titles I wouldn't find in a small B&N! I didn't end up getting anything (was trying to be good...), but I would definitely not hesitate the next time I come here and have more shelf space. Love this store! read more

Laguna beach books hits the mark for you one stop bookshop. If you it's not there they will get it for you and they have such a verity for you to choose from. Price wise they were not to pricey at all, I did do the Amazon check and I always prefer to buy from local shops so they were competitive . Independent bookstores are a rare breed, especially with the rise of Amazon and other online retailers. It makes a personal choice impersonal, and being able to browse a perspective purchase is a fun way to find out if the impulse was genuine or not. Located on Highway One, parking is available from the lot on the street behind. The selection was nicely arranged and currated. In many ways I miss how the original (non-corporate) Border's Books was. Employees groomed and oversaw certain sections and their choices were better than computer-generated algorithms. That's the feeling Laguna Beach Books evoked as I perused the cookbooks. The Paris themed section was a treat, and as I went deeper into the store the discoveries continued. The vibe was nice and the open access to boutiques in the same complex makes this a great way to avoid the heat and walk off a satisfying meal. Support your indie sellers! Been to this shop a few times and popped in when it started raining. I was greeted by two staffers behind the counter. I was able to take my time and not feel rushed while perusing the books and trinkets, then more books, and the kid area. The sales person helped me pick out gifts that fit my budget and shared upcoming events and new items. Sweet place. Love the whimsical kid section, and the store's variety. You can tell it's a real community store as people bumped into each other and chatted with staff, and joined other people's conversations. Will be back! read more

I am such a FAN! I'm a local, home for a visit from Northern California. I had finished the book that I had brought, and was in dire need of a good mystery read. I came to LBBS and inquired...they sent me to the area for my specific interest. I couldn't land on something and so I chose a book that I was lukewarm about. When I got to the cash register, the owner was able to answer my questions about the chosen read...BUT the other person at the cash register had a recommendation! The Thursday Murder Club. Well, I couldn't put it down and I've already ordered the next book by this author Here is my takeaway. These ladies were conversant in everything that I picked up, there were hand written critiques from various staff members next to all the books that they had read. The selection of books here was well chosen. This is not a large store but at every step I took there were attractive books and magazines. I found the store to also have friendly customer service. be careful when entering this store. don't expect any form of greeting, welcoming or service of any kind if you don't fit their likes/preference for a customer (i guess?). get ready for straight faces and being stared down at the register if you unfortunately decide to buy something like i did. walked in, was ignored even though both ladies working were chatting and walking around right next to us. greeted every other customer after us that walked through those doors with smiles and conversation. when i went up to the register and smiled waiting to be helped, one lady was just standing there staring at me, almost discontentedly, never said a word. the other lady who rung me up gave me short, harsh responses and then dropped my books in the bag roughly on the counter (as i reached my hand out to grab it), not giving a care towards the condition of the books i was buying. during the entire transaction, both ladies were staring me down according to the person with me, i hadn't noticed because i was too uncomfortable to look up. i said thank you and have a nice day with a smile and all they did was stare and ignore me. read more

Not impressed. The staff asked everyone in the store if they needed help... except us. We were passed by multiple times and every time ignored. Yes we have tattoos, but guess what, we also hold degrees. Normally I would let this go and move on. However, when I walked by the cash register to browse more of their selection, I caught the two ladies staring at me and whispering behind my back while pointing at me. You are not invisible and this is complete inappropriate as well as childish. The selection of books is fabulous, well organized and it was nice to see some personalized notes on staff recommendations. Too bad the staff working behaved in such an appalling manner. I love visiting independent bookstores, so when my husband Matt B. mentioned Laguna Beach Books, where he'd bought a George Saunders book during an Orange County bachelor party weekend, I insisted on stopping by while we were in Laguna Beach. We managed to find metered street parking--not the easiest--and wandered in on a sunny Sunday, before leaving town. The bookstore was lovely, with a cheerful, welcoming vibe and a whole lot of books. I spent some time browsing the fiction section and picked up a few books I'd been meaning to read, including The Stories of Breece D'J Pancake, a guy who wrote twelve stories then killed himself, and also whose odd middle name is actually the result of The Atlantic misprinting his initials. I'd heard good things about his writing years ago, but this was my first time coming across his book in a store. The fiction selection was great overall, and I really liked the recommended novels on display, were low key heavy on titles by women writers and writers of color, many of which would not be known to casual readers. There were also showcases of local writers, which I always appreciate. I noticed there was also an in-store reading happening that weekend. I know I depend on my local bookstores as literary hubs, and it seems like Laguna Beach Books plays that role here. The people here were also super nice. I had a pleasant little conversation with the woman who rang me up, and she sent us off a few books richer than we were when we came in. I'd recommend this bookstore to anyone living in or passing through Laguna Beach, and will make a point of coming back whenever I'm in town. read more
