Hosts Travis and Amanda provided enough opportunities to create new friendships through rock painting, movie night, potluck, s'mores roast, and fishing derby. We felt comfortable joining in or opting to relax on our own. They were very accommodating and just a phone call/text away if we needed anything. I gave the resort 4 stars because there is some room for improvement on the resort. Repairing the swing set (broken monkey bars, adding fresh sand to the sandbox), making sure the paddle boat and beach chairs are in good shape would be a few of the things I would like to see. I know there is a staffing shortage at many places right now, so t's understandable.

The view of the storage or tool shed is off putting but the shed is disclosed in the write up. The cottage needs a makeover. Rotted wood on the outside and a paint job is needed. The cottage smells musty, the furniture is too big for the size of the living room (keep the futon. Lose the recliner) the refrigerator should at least be painted so all the dings and scratches don't show. Add a cutting board. Fix the drawers so they don't almost fall out when opened. The dish towel is old and discolored and only one. The sheets for the sagging bed are both low end. Get a good quality mattress and sheets forcrying out loud. There is no bedding for the futon. Nor does someone from out of state need to bring such items. Maybe put a screen around the water heater. Make the vent pipe above the water heater more attractive by painting (maybe decal with moose or fish) and cover the end with exposed insulation. Repair the wood rot by shower. Replace sagging ceiling in bedroom.

If you're looking for luxury, or a contemporary resort experience, this is definitely not your place. Service: I would describe the service we received as very competent. It's a family run business, and they've been doing it for decades. The phone was answered when we needed it to be answered. The reservations were fulfilled without any issues. Dean, the manager, only has one additional person on staff, but he knows how to make it all work. It's a little eccentric, when compared to a more corporate resort experience, but that's how a family run hospitality business can be. Location: Staying on an island was really fun. No cars or roads obviously, and not even many foot trails. A lot of peace and quiet. A bit of planning is needed to get everything and everyone out to the island, but we saw it as an adventure. Our group is all about being on the water, so for us being on the Eagle River chain of lakes was amazing. We brought two wake/surf boats, and also rented two pontoon boats from Gypsy Villa. The pontoons were old, rudimentary, and noisy, but they always got us where we needed to go. The chain of lakes is bigger than our group could ever see in a week. We spent the majority of our days on Cranberry Lake busy with watersports, and took the pontoons out to dinner three times. It was great having dining options available by boat ride. Facilities: The cabins are all 50 to 60 years old, including the décor. They were clean and fully functional. Most in our group were fine with their beds, some weren't. We all had hot water. The kitchen appliances were dated, but they worked fine. I had hot coffee every morning. Plenty of cookware and utensils. The TVs are old, but we never turned them on anyway. Overall, we all enjoyed the funky cabins. We stayed in the Executive Cabin, and it was generally good. It has a big screen porch that we were able to seat 17 people in for dinner one rainy evening. An odd characteristic of the cabin was that the vaulted ceiling is open between the two downstairs bedrooms, with the wall only going up to 8 feet. My wife and I were in one room, and our teenage son was in the other. Weird. The only real complaint from our group about the facility was that there isn't a fire pit at every cabin. That really should be changed. Having a well designed fire pit next to the water at each cabin should not be too great of a risk to manage. The game room is a total time warp, with all the "video games" being from the 1980's. The pool table worked fine. Everything takes quarters. The kids hung out there when it rained a couple times, but it's not a destination. We used the tennis/basketball court every day for pickleball (we brought our own equipment). Overall: "Up North" resorts with cabins on the shoreline of a Wisconsin lake are from a bygone time. They're like the lodging version of a vintage supper club. It's an experience that's not for everyone, or even most people today. With fewer and fewer people spending their vacation time in places like this, these resorts are disappearing. What this means from a quality stand point is that they've typically not been updated in years, and won't stand up to contemporary resort expectations. But, it has a rustic charm that my friends and I grew up with, and we're really very happy we can still find it, and share it with our kids. Gypsy Villa has rustic charm in spades. At the end of the week everyone wanted to start planning our return next summer.

Wasn't sure what he booked. When we arrived we were greeted by Lynn the owner. She had our cabin warmed and gave us a few tips. Upon walking in I found the nicest, cleanest, cozy winter getaway cabin I could imagine. Very nicely appointed kitchen and bath. Nice cozy living area with fireplace. King bed lots of pillows. The group that I've gone fishing with the last couple of years have been coming here for the last…read more10-15 years. This in my second time here with this group and the new owners running it, and will be our last. One big issue was, there weren't enough boat slips for all the patrons who brought boats! When we arrived on Sunday, we had 3 boats in our party, Nick (Manager) said that there wouldn't be an issue because they were putting in more slips (piers) on Tuesday. Well, that didn't happen because of the Duck Lice and the guys got "Lake Itch." Speaking with a couple of previous resort owners, those should have been in April/May before the Duck Lice came in season. With the boat slips, fisherman gentleman's agreement, when you go out on the water, you leave your tie lines on the pier, designating your spot, when we went out for the day, we came back and someone had taken our spot. It wasn't a serious altercation but words were exchanged. Should never have gotten to that if the piers were installed. There were not enough slips for all those who brought boats. The cabins are not quite suited for 4 adults. The cabins we stayed were 2 bedrooms. One bedroom had a queen bed and the other had 2 bunk beds, one of which were built in the size of the catacombs', barely room for a full-size adult. Because of the bunks, one of our guys slept on a cot he brought. There is no AC or ceiling fans fortunately we brought our own fans. It did get warm in the cabins. The bathtubs had good pressure but a very slippery bottom. They did supply towels which were a plus, some resorts of this nature do not. Ownership requires that everything be cleaned (kitchen) and tenants will remove all bed linens and towels and place in the sacks supplied. I have stayed in quite a few hotels during the pandemic and NEVER was I required to take down my own linens. Obviously, there is lack of qualified maid staff that the renters are required to clean the kitchen. When we arrived, some of the dishes on the shelf were dirty, dirty flatware put away as well as a frying pan. The deck which these cabins shared had some soft boards which could be a safety issue as well as a railing on one side that was ready to fall over. We made note amongst ourselves to stay clear. The grills were dirty and not in the best shape. When we arrived on Sunday, the garbage and recycling were full. On Wednesday, only the recycling was taken. Wasn't until Saturday that both gondolas were emptied. On the plus side the POV store was open this year and I was impressed with the basics available for sale and at fair price...but nobody was minding the store. We wanted a couple items and had to call to get someone so we could pay. I didn't review last year because their ownership was in its infancy and there were requests by the owner that we thought were unorthodox but related to Covid. It seems like not much has changed, except last year, all the piers were in when we arrived. The guys that have been coming here for years said this was much better before when Tom owned and ran. We all agreed that this was our last stay here, not to return.

The lodge is definitely a step back in time to the 60's/70's. But VERY clean and neat and comfortable! Will stay here again. No TV in the room... if you don't like it, don't come to the North Woods. We should all be outside enjoying the woods anyway. Pleasant lady running the lodge. I have no complaints.

I stayed at the Homestead cottage over Memorial Day weekend. It was my first time there, but my…read morefamily has been going there twice a year for fourteen years. It is a rather quiet locale, with only the occasional loud boaters and barky dogs at whom to make disapproving faces. The cottage we were in had a rather sloped backyard leading to the lake. It wasn't a difficult climb for me, but I could imagine anyone with mobility issues having a more trying time of it, especially considering there are no stairs. The TVs were plentiful (living room, bar area, bedrooms, even a bathroom), but they don't seem to all get the same channels. They did have a good enough variety of them, though. We even had a Bose radio (the one from the commercials) that put out some decent sound. Be sure to bring your own bedding (they charge extra if you use theirs... don't ask me why) and paper goods. They had a decent supply of plates, serving dishes, bowls, silverware, steak knives, and (most importantly) a corkscrew. The lake itself is oddly shaped, but that makes for more interesting boating excursions. Fishing off of the dock right behind the house yielded some bluegill, a perch, a couple of bass, and a few northern. Fishing from a boat resulted in one muskie. The water near the shore isn't too weedy, but it's also not very deep (about 3 feet at the end of the pier). I have AT&T, and I was able to get 4-5 bars of phone reception and a fine GPS signal, but practically no data signal. The iPhone said it had access to "E" (Edge) data, but about 80% of the time whatever I was trying to do would time out, and that was from the "good" spot near the dining table. There is wifi available at the main area, from what I understand, and also at many nearby shops/coffee places/bars. The ones that do typically advertise with signs. The closest grocery store is pretty high priced, especially for weekender gear, so try not to forget anything important. Cathy's ice cream is a nice place to go on a warmer day, since it's nearby and has covered outdoor seating. The coffee shop next door to it also has wifi, if you buy something from them first.

Close to the lake, great boat docks - perfect for fishing for the kids. The swimming area has a slow slope for our little ones to enjoy the water too. The older kids loved the swimming to the raft. Also, there is a great playground and soccer/grass space we definitely took advantage of. The water was great, we brought a small fishing boat and kayaks, all were well used during the week. Great experience over all, can't wait to book again for next year!
