Honesty' Well, I will give Lake George a 4 rating for ambiance... clearly for its recreational warmth and a very tasteful (3) on the culinary apprise for all venue date-night seekers. That's if you're hungry for anything else, other than fresh "fish". I've experience a beautiful channel of water ways. Pilot channel with scenic sidewalks and remote bayside channel of restaurants and family oriented activities. But' My choice was the fish and I did not experience that. Hook line and sinker? "Nemo" he's my favorite! My opinion is this Lake George "Reservoir needs-a fish revival.‍ That's it'... where are the damn fish. Stock this channel with a variety of choice -like fish. And, this reservoir monument will be a historic go-to-place....forever. You've been informed. read more

My mom used to take me to Lake George every year when I was a kid. It been over 20 years since I've been here and it puts a smile on my face knowing that many of the places I remember from my childhood such as the House of Frankenstein wax museum, Capri Pizza, Lake George Steamboat Company, Battlefield State Park, the Million Dollar Beach, and much more are still here. The City of Lake George has done a great job keeping this town beautiful for the locals and visitors who come here. There is plenty of places to shop, eat, and enjoy some light entertainment. We stopped up for their annual Oktoberfest and had a blast. The weather was chilly in the am but warmed up through the day. We found parking for $10 in a large open lot and walked up to Shepard Park where the even was being held. We had a great time at the event and all the staff working were friendly and kept up on maintaining restrooms and trash. Oktoberfest was free to enter; drinks and food were reasonably priced. My family and I had a blast dancing to some iconic Polka's and joining in with the band on the Germain Cowbells. All-in-all, we had a wonderful time in Lake George and I can't wait to visit again soon. read more

There are places in this weary world that seem to have been dreamed up by a benevolent god on one of his better days, and Lake George is one of them. My wife's family has been going there since she was a little girl. When she brought me for the first time, she said, "Just wait until you see it." I did, and I have been waiting to see it again every year since. Now our children wait for it too. It has become one of their favorite places on Earth, which feels like a small miracle considering how full of screens and distractions the rest of the planet has become. The village itself reminds me of a Jersey Shore town that wandered too far inland and got stuck among the mountains. Canada Street is its boardwalk, bustling with arcades that still smell faintly of popcorn oil and ozone, and souvenir shops selling t-shirts, fudge, and wooden signs that promise laughter lives here. The food is overpriced and of moderate quality, but nobody really cares. The ice cream is cold, the fries are hot, and the people seem to be trying very hard to enjoy themselves. That's a noble thing. But the village is not the point. The lake is. Lake George is a long blue miracle cupped in the rough hands of the Adirondacks. The water is so clear you can see straight down to the rocks where the sunlight breaks into singular beams. The mountains stand around it like patient, benevolent giants who have seen every kind of human folly and still choose to protect this place. To be out on the water, really out there, with the motor off and the air quiet except for the call of a loon, is to remember that peace is not a metaphor. It exists. You can touch it. Something strange happened after the world shut down in 2020. When people were told to stay away from one another, they went looking for places that allowed them to be outside yet made them feel alive again. Many in the metro New York area found or rediscovered Lake George. It seemed to benefit in a way few places did, as though its beauty had been waiting centuries for this sudden rush of attention. The result was predictable. More boats, more traffic, more vacation rentals, more zeros on the restaurant bills. The lake became a little more crowded, a lot more expensive, and perhaps a bit less innocent. Still, it endures. Beauty like this can survive anything, even prosperity. Every summer, when we stand on the dock and the sun folds itself behind the mountains, I feel something I cannot name. It is part nostalgia, part gratitude, part disbelief that we are lucky enough to share this view. My children stare at the little waves as the sunlight plays among them, and I think that maybe this is what heaven looks like before the tourists arrive. If you go, do not just visit Lake George. Let it visit you. It has stories older than your country and water cleaner than your conscience. It has a way of making you forget what time it is. That, in the end, is the highest compliment I can give any place on Earth. read more

Lake George is one of my favorite places in Ny! I remember coming here with my dad for bike week. Watching all the motorcycle drive-by as we ate pizza from Carpri pizzeria. My dad would talk to his buddies well I watched more motorcycle and people. Staying with a family member that lived there walking around in the off season. Going to the winter carnival. Watching fireworks during the summertime. Going to the amusement park. Going to a Fort, William Henry, and watching all of the things they have to offer there. So many amazing things to do in Lake George. Worth the trip. I spent the day walking around playing Pokémon Go. If that is something you are interested in there's a lot of gyms and a lot of stops. Great little city (village?). Brought back memories of my trips to North Conway, NH as a kid 35-40 years ago. Bustling, but not so much so to make you agoraphobic and generally upbeat energy. A little weird in some sense, as there are 2-3 DILLIGAF stores all on the same street, 2-3 mini golf places with a 1/4 of a mile of each other, and 2 arcades within a 1/4 of a mile of each other. Almost bizzarro world like. That said, its an extremely nice area and was a satisfying visit after my steamboat tour. read more

If I could give this review unlimited stars I would. My friends and I were on our 2nd annual Lake George camping trip after falling in love with the lake last year. This year we found ourselves in an emergency situation when our friend got severely injured wake boarding. Within 2 minutes of calling 911 the Rangers were escorting our boat to the nearest Marina and the ambulance was there 2 minutes later. Their immediacy and EMS efforts allowed our friend to make it to the hospital to get stitched up and return home safely. We cannot thank the Lake George Rangers and EMS enough. #Teamheidi read more

We had a fabulous day out on the lake. Quite smooth in the morning, we were all about. I know Paradise Bay was one place we stopped for some swimming, then there was a campground near Bear Mountain and then there was some other swimming elsewhere. I wasn't paying attention, I just know that we were up and down the lake all day! Smooth in the morning but by 4 or 5pm, the water got quite choppy. State Police on patrol here and there to make sure that everything stayed friendly. Note that some of the state-owned land does not permit dogs. Enjoyed the ice castles in Lake George. Very organized event. Parking is $10 unless you can get lucky enough to find a free spot. The ice Castles are beautiful. As it gets dark the led lights turn a rainbow of colors spectacular setting. Climb in canes, through tunnels, under large icicles, just beautiful. Please don't lick or touch the ice. I saw kids breaking parts off which just ruins it for the rest of us. It's cold be prepared gloves, hat, bundle. There is a gas fire to warm your hands at if they get too cold. read more

If Covid has taught us anything, it's this: during the height of the pandemic, we needed a place to vacation and we discovered this gem of a town close enough to home to not having to quarantine once we were done. Lake George is a fantastic place to take your family to do whatever you would ever want. Go hiking or rent a boat on the water, Go shooting or go ride a horse. I have heard quite a bit about Lake George, and I was finally able to recently go and take a solo day trip to check it out. As for Lake George/the natural environment itself--it is really beautiful. I can imagine in the fall with the foliage it would be absolutely stunning. I decided to take 9N to the northern part of the lake in Ticonderoga. A good part of 9N is right on the water, so it is a pleasant hour or so drive from Lake George Village. If I am ever back in the area, I'll have to check out Prospect Mountain for the aerial view of the lake. As some others have mentioned, the vast majority of folks walking around Lake George Village (and densely so), are not wearing masks. Some of the shops on the the main street are outright hostile with selling offensive merchandise, and I got a similar vibe throughout the greater area. A quick drive through the towns and spending most of the time on the perimeter drive, and getting in some hiking would be my two cents on an overall recommendation here. read more

I grew up 1 hour south of Lake George, so I came here a few times each year for day trips. This seems to be a very popular destination for people from NJ for some reason. The village itself is extremely tacky. There are countless t-shirt shops selling offensive t's. Most of the stores are junk shops, but there are a couple of good ones. The village features a couple of ice cream shops and a plethora of restaurants, none of them are what I would consider foodie destinations. I'd try to dine at one of the spots that overlooks the beautiful lake, all of them are very casual. I've done a lot of hiking within 30 minutes of the village. I'd highly recommend Sleeping Beauty, Hadley and Buck Mountain. Be sure to research your trails before you go. I did the Tongue range one early September and we spotted multiple large rattle snakes. About ten years ago, I had the chance to visit a friend's family home on the lake and that's the best way to experience LG. I could certainly see the appeal of coming here and renting a spot right on the water. If you come here in the summer it is obviously crazy busy, but in the winter it's dead and many of the stores are closed. I suggest taking the short stroll from the village over to Million Dollar Beach to get some nice views of the mountains. There are a couple of different boat companies running sailings on the lake. I did this a few years back before moving away from the Albany area, it was nice at sunset. Lake George puts on multiple firework shows throughout the summer, so it's worth checking the schedule and seeing that. I'd consider this place more of a weekend destination, I think it would get boring after that. Be sure to head up to Bolton Landing, there also have a cute main street. read more

I've only been here twice, once last year and this week. Both times were for business and both times in the off season. As a result I can only speak to the off season. Driving through town you find a plethora of shops and restaurants. This time of year nothing is open. You can actually walk down the center of Canada Street/Route 9, and not have to avoid cars because there are none. Most restaurants are closed for the off season. Both time there I ate at the same restaurant only because there were no good choices. As I said I've never been there during the busy season but I can imagine that it would be super crowded and that's not for me. First trip was end of July and it was packed. Parking was impossible, walking down the sidewalk or along the lake was impossible but the scenery alone was worth it. This time around we visited the weekend after Labor Day and it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. We biked to the lake from our hotel. Sat and enjoyed the view of the lake and later enjoyed a game of miniature golf. It's a great place to visit because it has something for everyone. You can bike, hike, lay out on the beach, enjoy water sports, go sightseeing on a boat, visit a museum and there are many food and bar options. We can't wait for our next visit because there is always more things to try. read more

Lake George is a thing of beauty. Although it's a bit far away from the NYC area for a regular weekend getaway (about a 4 hour drive) if you can tack a Friday or Monday on it's the ideal distance for a long weekend. A stay in Lake George suits all needs. If you need a few days to relax and get away from it all you can lay on the lake and curl up with a good book while overlooking the lush green mountains. If you want more adventure there is a ton to do. Hiking trails, biking trails, kayaking, rafting, ropes courses, swimming...the list goes on and on. If you are really looking to get away from it all I suggest staying a bit further away from the downtown village area which is where you can find most of the touristy gift shops, restaurants and bars. The downtown area is a bit louder but it's more fun and there are some great local dives with cover bands. Plus, mini golf and ice cream shops are everywhere you look. The only negative thing I'll say about this wondrous lake town is that the food is pretty narsty. If 2.5 stars on Yelp deters you from trying a restaurant then you'll probably go hungry here, because that is the norm. Pro-tip is if you head away from Lake George village and out towards Boltons Landing / Diamond Point you can find some better food options. I come up here for a long weekend getaway nearly every summer and I have no regrets. It's cheap, a relatively easy drive and I can spend some time relaxing and some time adventuring. read more

Lake George is a long, narrow lake that lies within the upper region of the Great Appalachian Valley and drains northward into Lake Champlain and the St. Lawrence River drainage basin. Let me just say that the water is COLD, but that's real popular with them city folk that are looking to get away during the heat of the summer. There is a popular sandy beach on the south end of the lake in the town of Lake George Village, and that's where you'll find most of the people. The town has become a real mecca of weekend tourists, and as a result, Main Street has the usual collection of motels, chain restaurants, and touristy souvenir shops. If you can get past all of that, I suggest parking your car near the beach and going for walk along the shore. You'll see the famed "Millionaires Row" mansions along the west shore of the Lake. This was the area made famous by the likes of the Roosevelt, van Rensselaer, Vanderbilt, Rockefeller and Whitney families. Several of their spectacular homes can still be seen on the banks of the lake. One touristy, but very popular, thing to do is hop aboard the Minne-Ha-Ha paddlewheel steamboat for an hour-long cruise along the lake. You'll tour the southern half of the lake, including views of the large historic mansions that line the shores below scenic mountains. Each site and its history are fully described by your captain. And when you return back to Lake George as you disembark the vessel, you will be serenaded by the Minne's authentic steam calliope. With most people looking to this place as a vacation spot, of course a town local will say it isn't. Would anyone really vacation to their own home town? Ryan seems more like the rich guy. Anyways, I visit Lake George usually once every year. I will be going there for 5 days come August this year. There are many hotels to choose from near and around the town. At decent prices as well. I'll be staying at the Fort William Henry Hotel this year. The room was about $800 for 5 nights with 3 adults and 1 child. They have water front facing rooms where you can watch the fireworks that are shot off of the lake. Just be sure to get your rooms early as the good hotels will sell out fast. The steam boat company has several cruise ships. This year I will be enjoying the breakfast cruise on the Saint Sacramento. Some cruises are pushed out much longer than they should be so choose wisely. Also, dress warm as the ride on the lake can get a little chilly. The area around Canada Street has many stores where you can pick up all sorts of items. From clothes, sparklers, toys, and various other souvenir items. There's a Ben and Jerry's ice cream parlor. I do enjoy my Chunk Monkey ice cream. Various shops for other food items as well as arcades to play a few games. The Frankenstein Wax Museums is a must. It's one of the first things I do every year. The restaurants in the area, you know the sit down and dine ones, are not one of the better parts of the town if you ask me. I never really enjoyed them in the past, but then again I didn't really give too many of them a try either. Perhaps I'll have better luck this year. Great Escape is near by which is a fun place for kids. If you've been to Great Adventure in NJ, then you may find this place a little downgraded, but at least the wait time for rides is much much better. Waterslide World is also within the town. Another good place for everyone. Kinda on the small side though, but who doesn't like to look at girls walking around in bikinis all day. I know I sure do! Haha. Pirates Cove mini golf courses are also in the town. Two different places. One of which, has two separate courses. They are beautiful courses, but the kids may find them a little challenging. Be sure to watch for the secrets at some holes. I won't go into detail as I don't want to reveal any spoilers. All in all, if you're a young adult looking to go on vacation, but don't think you really have enough money to do anything fun, then give Lake George a try. It's no Hawaii, but you should enjoy it and there's many other things around that I didn't mention. I can go on and on, but we all know a long review doesn't get read as much as the short ones. We took the steam boat as well for $17 it's an hour trip. There's ducks and dead fish floating. At this time July the water isn't a good place to be at. It's a little chilly. Why all the bad reviews? I go to Lake george every year and I am never disappointed. Lake George is a small summer vacation town, so do not go there expecting 5 star restaurants, white sandy beaches and cocktails with umbrellas. If you like mom and pop stores, mini golf, water sports, arcades, local restaurants and good fun, this is the place for you. There is a ton to do here, so you won't go bored. They have shopping, restaurants, a beach and even a six flags. Almost every hotel has a pool. There are enough ice cream shops to make you gain a good 10 pounds while visiting. Fireworks on Thursday nights during the summer. For adults, definitely visit the winery on Canada Street. Super congested touristy area.. I'd like to return and give it another chance for hiking, but if you're into tourism then this is a good family spot. Lots of activities on the lake...boating, parasailing, and skiing and snowboarding in the winter. I am the only guy from Queens, NY who goes to Lake George over the summer. I love this part of the NYS, it's my kind of world where I can relax and escape the stressful place called NYC. Lake George has everything from riding in a steamboat to swimming in the lake!!. They got great restaurants to eat breakfast/lunch/dinner. Best place to dine is the Adirondack Pub & Brewery. How I got there? I don't drive, I took a round trip ticket on the Adirondack trailways bus from NYC to Lake George. The price was around $130 for each. For people who live in the five boroughs that doesn't drive, do what I did, take the Adirondack trailways at the port authority bus terminal for a round trip from NYC to Lake George. Lake George doesn't have a bus terminal, they'll let you off at the court house in Canada street. Come to Lake George, it's more relaxing than having a picnic in Central Park or a cookout in Randall's island. read more

The Village of Lake George is certainly enjoyable in itself for several days, but just a warning for those of you who are Covid-wary, that a LOT of people do not wear masks in the main commercial / dining areas. The restaurants are pretty good about keeping tables socially distant and asking patrons to wear masks until they sit down to eat, but on the streets, especially at night around dinner time, folks seemed fairly resistant to taking basic precautions. So, if you are in a higher-risk group, I suggest you put off your Lake George vacation until the pandemic is really over. read more

If you have come to Lake George in full tourist mode, I am sorry to disappoint. Lake George is a place for serenity and relaxation as you look out at that view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Came here for a weekend with my parents, we've always done those hectic touristy vacations but I am about to change that. Reserved a night at Sun Castle Resort. What I recommend for your trip here: 1. Reserve a lodging with a close view of the water. Just sit out there and relax and forget about all the troubles in your life. There are hotels that do allow you do canoe and kayak with their equipment. 2. Go to Prospect Mountain - for $10 per car (cash), you can drive up to three view points. The highest point, there is a free shuttle that drives up to the highest point where there are picnic tables. We brought food up and just enjoyed the quietness and the view as we ate. 3. Steamboat Cruise -There are 1 hr cruises to cruises for 2.5 hours. Choose to your liking. There is a $1/hr parking nearby. 4. Walking along the side of the coast. 5. Sagamore - I came here for dinner (not rec) but was able to walk through the resort and had a great view of the sunset, the mountains, and the water surrounding the resort. On the drive back to NYC, we of course stopped at Woodbury. read more

Easily one of my favorite places to go on vacation. I have been camping in Lake George since I hopped out my mothers womb. We tend to come here at least once a year and I love every second of it. The Lake: Really clean, relaxing and plenty of activities to do on it. Boating, fishing, tubing, water skiing, wake boarding, cliff jumping, paddle boarding, and just straight chilling on the water. Town: The town itself used to be so much more amazing to me as a child with an arcade on every corner now a days it seems less exciting. I have found a few spots on the strip that catch my interest like the winery and Indian store for some cool incense and hippie bracelets. They have mini golf pretty much everywhere so check one of those out! They also have horse back riding that is pretty awesome more towards Bolton's Landing. Food: Like others have said there are few options try going a town over for better options. GEORGES IS AMAZING and you should go and have a big fat prime rib! (located in Lake George) Housing: Staying here I have always either rented a house or a campsite so I really don't know too much about places to recommend unless you are looking to do either of those options. Rogers Rock is where I have always stayed and rented a personal friends house for the week. Overall this is great family vacation area with an easy ride from NYC area ( about 3 1/2-4 Hour drive) Great for an extended weekend getaway! The trip itself is relatively cheap over all and provides great memories for years to come! read more
