7/21/21: The NASTY & RUDE receptionist who has no customer service skills whatsoever. Get a different job please Cassandra.

7/21/21: My grandmother was transferred here from the hospital after an injury. I got some great reviews about this place, and she's been here before. So, I was comfortable about signing the paperwork for her rehab. The first few times I came to visit, the front desk staff was extremely friendly & helpful. A few of the nurses were unprofessional & seemed to be more concerned about personal conversations, but I let that go. It wasn't until this evening that I really started having second thoughts. I showed up around 6:30 pm to bring my grandmother some food & was met by this NASTY, RUDE switchboard operator/receptionist. Rude from the start, I TRIED to remain polite. She was short and her tone was negative & as if I was bothering her. I wanted to put the food in my grandmother's hands MYSELF! I don't know her or anyone else, so why would I trust them to handle her food?? I calmly explained how far I had driven to get there & asked how to get an exception to this 6 pm visiting hour timeframe. She abruptly told me to call her social worker. ???? She didn't even tell me who that was. She just kept doing what she was doing in between calling whoever she called to come pick the food up off the table she told me to leave it on. I just didn't like her attitude. People like this shouldn't be on the front line in customer service. Put her in the back somewhere where she doesn't have to be seen. This 1 interaction just changed the way I see this place. I was excited for my grandmother to be here for rehab. Now, not so much. I'm sure this is NOT her first complaint. People like her always get complained on, but she doesn't change because her job doesn't require her to. I tried HARD not to be rude in return, but I couldn't help it after awhile & told her a few things about herself. People like that make it impossible for a family to trust that their loved ones are safe away from them. My granny's cellphone doesn't have reception in this place nor does her room phone talk volume go up. It is extremely LOW, we can't hear each other, & there is no other way to communicate with her. It makes me feel like she's in a JAIL & not a rehab facility. I've left messages for everyone I could about this. If I don't hear back tomorrow, I'm looking to have her moved. I won't be prevented from seeing/speaking to her especially when their own admission documents state that visiting hours are 9 am - 9 pm. She could've allowed me to see her for a minute. Her nasty self just prevented it because she could. Let's hope we don't have to interact again. I won't be as nice next time. Think twice about coming here if you value your freedom or expect professionalism. You will be disappointed. 7/22/21 Update: The owner & the boss of the nasty receptionist (Cassandra) called me today. They are trying to rectify the issues I had as well as reprimand her (I guess). The social worker, Kara, still hasn't called me back about the so-called special hours exemption, so I can't give them over 3 stars at this time. I appreciate these 2 gentleman immediately responding to my concerns though. I went to visit my granny this evening around 5:05 pm & the evil woman was there with another lady at the desk. She has a completely different attitude. Lol. I wonder why. Anyway, once I get all of my issues addressed, I will edit my review. Right now I'm changing my rating from 2 stars to 3.

The lovely woman checked me in and handed me over to two other lovely ladies who were very kind. They got my weight and asked some basic questions. One of them actually had the same pair eyewear Larkin frames as me (we chatted about our magnet frame collection) before telling me to pick a seat and wait to be called. They had me seen very quickly, maybe it was 5 minutes before I was brought to the back. My ride didn't even make it in the door yet. They placed me in what felt like a cubical. Only wide enough for one person. Matt (in-take nurse) was very kind. He put in my IV. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to communicate that the vein he went for was a rolling vein and the hardest one to stick. He did an amazing job getting the IV needle in with all the uncontrollable tremors I was experiencing. If my arm hadn't bruised, I would have been absolutely shocked. I was moved into a make shift "private room", which I'm very grateful for. Dr. Michael J. Bono, MD was my doctor and, would you know it, it was his last shift EVER (42 years) before retiring. It was GOD who blessed me as his last patient. Turned out he and my Like-a-Dad (EMT) actually worked together 20+ years prior. Dr.Bono made sure to get the answers I needed and the treatment I so desperately needed. He gave me a few referrals and recommendations on great physicians. There was a gorgeous lady nurse who kept checking in on me but I was so out of it that I did catch her name. I wish I got it because she was so sweet and funny. She kept my spirits up. She felt like a guardian angel. Before leaving (mind you I'm completed drugged up on meds they gave me) Chris (nurse) made sure to get a very important message through my drugged up head. I remember seeing just his face with a flat cap on, playfully yelling at me about the do's and don'ts on the prescription they had given me. This was the best experience I ever had with a hospital. I was scared to death and you all worked together to keep me calm and playful. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. If I ever end up back there again, I pray to have the same experience.

The waiting area is large and comfortable. the last time I went, we drove up to a platoon of First Atlantic Restoration vans. We learned that there had been a bad water leak. All outpatients were being sent to the nearby Brock Cancer Center. Lab & Check in personnel from Leigh had also been moved over to the detour location. When we drove up yesterday the front doors were blocked. There was a large sign pointed south that read entrance. We drove around the building and found no entrance. On the way back a person was walking down the sidewalk. She pointed us to the one door that could be entered. It was obstructed from easy view by the large entrance detour sign. Walking in I found so much completely different. One was first sent through security, which had never been in the lobby of Leigh. My purse was searched before I went through a scanner. The front area, which was previously a nice large entrance and desk, was now covered in plywood. The employees have always been nice and friendly. I was called back into the lab just as I finished registration. My regular bloodwork was done quickly and I prepared to leave. Sitting down in the main lobby I texted my ride that I was done. Of course I took a few pictures. When I picked up my purse I glanced at my arm. Blood was pouring out from the bandaid that covered what is normally just a needle prick. It was all over my arm, hand and shirt. Stunned, I finally moved when the really nice Security guy told me I'd better go back to the lab, Returning to the checkin area I asked if they could buzz me back in. They also stood there stunned before one asked if I had just had lab work done. When I affirmed they finally took action. The same person who drew my blood cleaned me up & used a big wrap around bandage on my arm. She said she had thought it would be fine. I really expected more of an apology. Thinking back I did remember that she had the drawer open a little longer than usual deciding what to use. Did she use the wrong size needle? Now I'm a little worried about the level of staff experience, which I've always counted on before. Even though the bandage was tight I was afraid to take it off until last night. I'm a regular at bloodwork and IV's. I have absolutely no problem with needles or having blood drawn. But today the inside of my arm looks like someone slit it with a knife. There's at least a one inch line where there should be an almost imperceptible prick or some bruising. I'm really debating as to whether I should change my preference for lab work.

On one of my visits, I walked through the oldest structure on campus which was the original hospital built in 1827. This is the oldest military hospital in the US. It still had the original stone exterior (outsise of original hospital) which had been closed in with hallways surrounding it. I checked out some cool paintings throughout the hospital. I learned a lot of history by reading the captions of the paintings. This biulding was turned into an administrative building. The campus was huge! The discussion appeared to involve the patient's private medical information and was conducted in a manner that sounded more like gossip than a legitimate clinical discussion. Before the physician became involved in the conversation, the female and male nurses referred to the patient by name and appeared to access or review his medical chart while discussing him. During the conversation, they discussed details of his medical condition, treatment history, and other information that appeared to come directly from his medical record. The female nurse stated that the patient had arrived at the hospital earlier that morning, between approximately 9:00 and 10:00 a.m., because antibiotics previously prescribed by Sentara Hospital were not improving his strep throat. She further stated that the patient had remained in the waiting room for approximately seven hours and discussed delays related to his testing and/or retesting for strep throat. The nurse also mocked the patient for crying and becoming emotional while seeking care for his worsening condition. The tone of the discussion appeared dismissive and disrespectful toward the patient and his medical concerns. Additionally, the female nurse stated that she had not documented everything that had been discussed or communicated regarding the patient's condition in his medical chart. The statement was made in the context of discussing the patient's care and raised concerns about whether relevant information had been omitted from the medical record. The conversation further suggested that concerns raised by the patient may not have been fully reflected in the chart, potentially affecting the evaluation and timeliness of his care. The fact that the patient was identified by name, that his chart appeared to be accessed and discussed outside the context of direct patient care, and that multiple healthcare professionals participated in the conversation raises serious concerns regarding patient confidentiality, professionalism, and compliance with healthcare privacy standards. The statements regarding prolonged waiting times, delayed testing, and incomplete documentation also raise concerns about the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of the care provided.

Feeling defenseless while in physical pain is not something I wish on anyone. I'm glad she is going to be on & is back with me. I still would think a million times before bringing her back to this hospital's ER.

The process took about an hour, so be prepared to be inside the MRI machine for a bit. You will hear strange sounds and it's tight in there. But it's really not that bad.
