Watching the sunset from my room

I've once again been admitted here for pulmonary hypertension, and luckily for me I caught it before it could turn into pneumonia. It's already frightening enough having to come here when I can't breathe, but it seems there's a disconnect between the triage staff and the sense of urgency. I get it, people who don't have a regular primary care provider come here for little aches and sneezes, things that clog up the emergency room for actual emergencies. But when I'm struggling just to walk to the front desk, for crying out loud at least have a wheelchair nearby. First pet peeve. Of course this ER is so crowded with people that should be seen by a PCP or urgent care doctor that there's no room. I am placed on 4 liters of oxygen and am seated rather uncomfortably in a wheelchair while having my labs drawn. I finally get into an actual bed in the ER, and my nurse assigned is Demi. She was my nurse the last time I was here, and I was so grateful to have her as my nurse that I started crying. Despite being busy, she was very attentive and caring. But of course change of shift came, and I got another nurse who apparently didn't pay attention to my vegetarian status. So fruit cup for dinner it is!!! Thankfully I got assigned a bed, so upstairs they took me. I'm in 6K. I'm hoping I get out sooner rather than later because I waited a whole day just for pain meds. My room is so small, it's giving me anxiety. I was nearly ready to sign myself out AMA, but the doctor managed to convince me to stay. And I was lucky enough to have Melody from food service bring me a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup, so that's the first good thing that's happened today.

I was very apprehensive when I was scheduled for testing that could only be done at the main building of Norfolk General. My late husband had been hospitalized there for about 3 weeks. So I knew of the parking horrors: full close lot & distant parking garage that's also used by CHKD & EVMS. The doctors office was "pretty sure" they had valet parking at the Kaufman entrance. But I had a doctor appointment to quickly follow at the Heart Hospital, which is in a different location in the complex. My dilemma was solved by having a friend drop me off at the Kaufman entrance then drive to the valet parking at the Heart Hospital where she could wait. They couldn't have been nicer at the check in desk. There was no line and plentiful seating. It wasn't as new and glitzy as Leigh but there was plenty of room to social distance. My technician also couldn't have been nicer. After performing the procedure she took me in a wheelchair all the way from the testing area to my doctor's office on the 6th floor of the Heart Hospital. It was service with a smile. I wouldn't hesitate to have further testing or Blood Work done at the main hospital This review is only for their testing. The rating isn't applicable to my late husband's hospitalization, their Palliative Care or Emergency Room. That was quite a different experience.

I ended up going here on a Tuesday for a TB test at the River Pavilion Lab. For me, the layouts of hospitals and their parking lots can be very confusing but this one was quiet intimidating. Instead of circling the buildings trying to find an empty parking space, there was a CHKD visitor parking garage that I just decided to park in. The ladies working at the front desk seemed to be a little bit irritable. Just as I was about to grab a paper copy of what looked like a map/layout of the hospital, the lady that was helping me interrupted me before I grabbed one and told me that she'd tell me the location in a second. My thoughts, "What if I was going to grab one for other reasons or to have a better mental layout of where everything is?" So I ended up leaving the paper on the counter and just repeated the directions she told me as I walked around (which were kind of incorrect) The ladies at the River Pavilion front desk were super nice and helpful. The lab had a bit of a wait but everyone was being helped efficiently. Looking around, you can see that the waiting room was clean and well maintained. When it was my turn, the gentleman working there checked me in for my test, I waited for maybe 10 mins, and then I was called to the registration area. I forgot her name but the woman plugging in all of my information was so sweet! After we were done with the registration, I signed all my forms, waited another 10 mins, and then I was called back for my test. Now to the test part. Maybe it was because I didn't drink as much water as I thought or maybe it was just really tough to find my vein but I was wondering why it was taking so long for my blood to fill up the tube. While the person was searching for their cotton pads to put over it and pull the needle out, the needle kept going further into my arm and it was a pretty long needle. As soon as I got home I went to check the spot she drew blood from because it hurt and there was a hematoma ): -- slight swelling on my arm, bruising around, and of course what's pictured --I'm used to getting blood drawn but never had that happen. It's been almost 2 weeks and my arm is still recovering from it. The whole process was fast and everyone was friendly at Sentara Norfolk General but for me, there's so much going on as far as buildings and parking goes. The whole facility inside and out is kept clean and they offer transportation around the centers in their little vehicles too.

4/22/21: I had to take a family member there for an MRI. Parking can be horrendous, but I was able to get dropped off. If I had to drive us, it would have been a nightmare. Covid social distancing and mask rules were followed. Upon entry, we had to check in at the security desk. The lady there was very nice to us. She was patient with my grandmother & made her laugh. She then pointed us over to the MRI office. The front desk rep there was less friendly & was preoccupied with her cellphone. As she was slowly checking us in, a man walked up and rudely interrupted because he claimed to have been waiting for his test for over an hour. She helped him & then got back to us. We waiting about 30 mins, but my family member was nervous and not rushing to get it done anyway. The sitting area was clean and organized. There was sanitizer available everywhere. Finally, it was my family member's turn & the tech was very patient and took his time with her. Once they were done, they brought her back out to us & she was so happy. They made her feel at ease & they were able to give us a disc with her results on it to give to her specialist. All in all, it was a good experience. **7/5/21 UPDATE: I had to go to the ER to pick up something that a family member left behind during a visit. As you walk through towards the entrance, there's a tent set up on the side. It looks weird. Then you walk in & there's a big red sign that basically tells you to stand there 6 ft. apart & wait for the registration clerk to call you up. I waited. There was also a nurse standing there with her computer. I finally got called up & I explained what I was there for. After that, things got really chaotic. Soooooo many people walked in after me. It clearly overwhelmed them because I pushed to the side & told they will look for the item when they can. That ER was so dirty and disgusting. I literally didn't even want to sit down on their chair. It smelled. It was just really gross. I waited and waited. There was a long line at the front now & no one was standing 6' behind the other. It was crazy!! Masks weren't worn correctly by staff & I just truly wanted to leave. If I had an emergency, this disorganized ER would be the LAST ONE I'd ever go to. I felt like I was going to catch COVID just sitting there. Though they had a sanitation station, NO ONE used it & there was even a lady EATING in there with her bare hands with all that hacking and coughing going on in there. Disgusting. I took 1 star off for this ER experience.

The waiting area is large and comfortable. the last time I went, we drove up to a platoon of First Atlantic Restoration vans. We learned that there had been a bad water leak. All outpatients were being sent to the nearby Brock Cancer Center. Lab & Check in personnel from Leigh had also been moved over to the detour location. When we drove up yesterday the front doors were blocked. There was a large sign pointed south that read entrance. We drove around the building and found no entrance. On the way back a person was walking down the sidewalk. She pointed us to the one door that could be entered. It was obstructed from easy view by the large entrance detour sign. Walking in I found so much completely different. One was first sent through security, which had never been in the lobby of Leigh. My purse was searched before I went through a scanner. The front area, which was previously a nice large entrance and desk, was now covered in plywood. The employees have always been nice and friendly. I was called back into the lab just as I finished registration. My regular bloodwork was done quickly and I prepared to leave. Sitting down in the main lobby I texted my ride that I was done. Of course I took a few pictures. When I picked up my purse I glanced at my arm. Blood was pouring out from the bandaid that covered what is normally just a needle prick. It was all over my arm, hand and shirt. Stunned, I finally moved when the really nice Security guy told me I'd better go back to the lab, Returning to the checkin area I asked if they could buzz me back in. They also stood there stunned before one asked if I had just had lab work done. When I affirmed they finally took action. The same person who drew my blood cleaned me up & used a big wrap around bandage on my arm. She said she had thought it would be fine. I really expected more of an apology. Thinking back I did remember that she had the drawer open a little longer than usual deciding what to use. Did she use the wrong size needle? Now I'm a little worried about the level of staff experience, which I've always counted on before. Even though the bandage was tight I was afraid to take it off until last night. I'm a regular at bloodwork and IV's. I have absolutely no problem with needles or having blood drawn. But today the inside of my arm looks like someone slit it with a knife. There's at least a one inch line where there should be an almost imperceptible prick or some bruising. I'm really debating as to whether I should change my preference for lab work.

She was exceptional, as was Ryan, the registered nurse who cared for my son in the post-operative unit. About a week before surgery, I was informed that only one parent would be allowed to stay overnight. After surgery, we were transferred to 7C - POD A, where Mikayla was our registered nurse during the day shift (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) on Wednesday and Thursday. I was told my son would need to stay overnight so the medical team could monitor his fluid intake and ensure he was able to take his medications. When we arrived in Room 718A, I noticed there was another patient area on the opposite side of a curtain. I asked Mikayla if another family could be assigned to the room, and she confirmed that they could. Since there was only one bathroom, it would also have to be shared. I immediately had concerns about this arrangement. There was very little privacy, and I did not feel comfortable or safe not knowing who might be staying on the other side of the curtain. Sharing a bathroom with another family also raised concerns about sanitation. After we settled into the room, Mikayla brought in IV Tylenol and explained that the physician had ordered Motrin to be given orally, which made sense because they wanted to monitor my son's ability to swallow. However, I mentioned that Ryan and Dr. Baldassari had both informed me that my son would also receive a steroid to help reduce swelling in his throat. Mikayla was unaware of this medication at first, but after I explained what I had been told, the steroid was eventually administered through his IV. At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, another family was admitted to the other side of our room. It appeared to be a husband, wife, and their child. My concern is this: if I was told only one parent could stay overnight, why was it acceptable for two parents to stay with another patient in the same room? In addition, I could clearly hear conversations regarding that child's medical care and upcoming procedure. This was a significant violation of patient privacy. Sharing a room separated only by a curtain, along with sharing a bathroom, did not seem appropriate from either a privacy or sanitation standpoint. Unfortunately, my interactions with Mikayla became increasingly uncomfortable. I felt that she became visibly frustrated with me. She rolled her eyes, and her tone of voice changed after I expressed that I did not want to stay another night with my three-year-old son. I understood the medical team's concerns because my son was reluctant to take his Tylenol and Motrin by mouth and had not met the required fluid intake. He drank approximately 190 mL instead of the required 300 mL for discharge. However, I explained that he is only three years old, had just undergone major surgery, and was not in a familiar environment. I assured her that he would likely drink more and take his medication once he returned home. Later that morning, after I asked when the doctor would be coming by, Mikayla stated that the physician had already seen me. I explained that a doctor briefly came into the room around 6:00 a.m., which startled me because I was asleep, and I was not under the impression that another overnight stay would be necessary. I politely requested to speak with the physician again. Mikayla appeared irritated and responded that she would send the doctor a message herself. After breakfast, Mikayla returned and informed me that she was preparing my son's discharge paperwork so we could "skedaddle." I found that comment to be unprofessional and inappropriate when speaking to a patient's family. While reviewing the discharge instructions, she repeatedly asked me, "Make sense?" I felt that her communication was condescending rather than respectful. I already had Tylenol and Motrin at home, but Dr. Baldassari had informed me that a prescription for Dexamethasone would also be sent to our pharmacy. I asked Mikayla whether that prescription had been sent. She stated that she was unsure and would contact the physician. After we packed our belongings, she returned and asked which pharmacy we used instead of confirming that the prescription had already been sent. I explained that we live in North Carolina and asked that it be sent to our local CVS pharmacy. I never received a notification from the pharmacy that day. The following morning, July 3, 2026, I contacted the hospital and spoke with the charge nurse on the morning regarding the prescription for Dexamethasone. The charge nurse searched the system and told me the prescription was sent to CHKD outpatient pharmacy located downstairs in the hospital. I informed her I told Mikayla before I left yesterday and I watched her right the pharmacy down to send the order to due me living in North Carolina. The charge nurse explained it wasn't Mikayla's fault.

The main waiting room area was pretty full with people waiting to be called to complete registration, etc. There is a bathroom in the waiting room. The facility itself was very clean in all of the spaces I was in for that day. The only difficulty I have found with this building is parking. Give yourself extra time to find a parking spot.

She was respectful, patient, and incredibly positive. She explained things to me in a way I understood, and she tried to keep the mood light even though she knew I was in pain. She checked on me often and made sure I was as comfortable as I could be. This isn't my first rodeo giving birth, but I can say she was the best L&D nurse I've had out of the four times. Mother and baby unit was also good. Bed was uncomfortable and I couldn't wait to leave. They were so accommodating though because I had really bad anxiety with the idea of baby leaving room without me. My night nurse, Marie did the hearing test in the room for me, and I was so thankful. My discharge nurse was Anne, and she was great for the time I had her. Funny and reassuring. I enjoyed my experience here with the nurses and recovery.

Bon Secours has been my go to for ER care when needed. I recently visited Bon Secours Health…read moreMedical Center in Harbourview, Suffolk, Va. and was very disappointed with the lack of patient privacy during my visit. Due to ongoing renovations, patients were seated and treated in the hallway. While I understand that construction can create challenges, there was little to no effort made to maintain confidentiality. Doctors were openly discussing patients' medical conditions, concerns, and treatment plans within clear earshot of others. Sensitive health information should not be easily overheard in a public hallway setting. Is it not important that healthcare facilities have a responsibility to protect patient privacy, even during renovations. I hope the administration addresses this issue promptly to ensure patients feel safe, respected, and protected when receiving care.

Wait until 9:00 a.m. to make sure the machine worked. Lady tells me "they'll be with you shortly to register you" WHAT??? It's now half hour past my appointment and I'm not checked in? I need to go to work people! At LabCorp (or where I used to live for that matter...) you walk in and you're out within 15 minutes of your time. What kind of craziness is this? I left. Please note - I previously tried to have lab work at one of their offices but fasted for nothing because their system was down. This is twice I haven't been able to complete basic labs due to bad customer service.
