Another disastrous day at Sentara Leigh Hospital yesterday! Their lab is the quickest place to get bloodwork. Checkin is easy. The waiting area is large and comfortable. the last time I went, we drove up to a platoon of First Atlantic Restoration vans. We learned that there had been a bad water leak. All outpatients were being sent to the nearby Brock Cancer Center. Lab & Check in personnel from Leigh had also been moved over to the detour location. When we drove up yesterday the front doors were blocked. There was a large sign pointed south that read entrance. We drove around the building and found no entrance. On the way back a person was walking down the sidewalk. She pointed us to the one door that could be entered. It was obstructed from easy view by the large entrance detour sign. Walking in I found so much completely different. One was first sent through security, which had never been in the lobby of Leigh. My purse was searched before I went through a scanner. The front area, which was previously a nice large entrance and desk, was now covered in plywood. The employees have always been nice and friendly. I was called back into the lab just as I finished registration. My regular bloodwork was done quickly and I prepared to leave. Sitting down in the main lobby I texted my ride that I was done. Of course I took a few pictures. When I picked up my purse I glanced at my arm. Blood was pouring out from the bandaid that covered what is normally just a needle prick. It was all over my arm, hand and shirt. Stunned, I finally moved when the really nice Security guy told me I'd better go back to the lab, Returning to the checkin area I asked if they could buzz me back in. They also stood there stunned before one asked if I had just had lab work done. When I affirmed they finally took action. The same person who drew my blood cleaned me up & used a big wrap around bandage on my arm. She said she had thought it would be fine. I really expected more of an apology. Thinking back I did remember that she had the drawer open a little longer than usual deciding what to use. Did she use the wrong size needle? Now I'm a little worried about the level of staff experience, which I've always counted on before. Even though the bandage was tight I was afraid to take it off until last night. I'm a regular at bloodwork and IV's. I have absolutely no problem with needles or having blood drawn. But today the inside of my arm looks like someone slit it with a knife. There's at least a one inch line where there should be an almost imperceptible prick or some bruising. I'm really debating as to whether I should change my preference for lab work. read more

This revue is strictly for their outpatient lab. This is clearly the best place for lab work and testing. The staff is quick, caring and efficient from check in to technicians. The facility is always clean and nicely decorated. I highly recommend them. read more

Terrible! Worse hospital I've been to. Staff are very nice, they try their best, but terrible procedures. Let's start with my hysterectomy back in August.... I was led to OR about 11:15am and I was home by 2:15pm????? I don't remember my husband picking me up and bringing me home. Flash forward to Tonight I was having some issues that was told by a nurse needed urgent matter and went in as their portal told me 25 min waiting time. Here I am 3.5 hours later. I have already read all my results and was left in a room for over an hour when they said they would be right in and made me get ready for an exam. I had to go out looking to see if anyone was coming and their response was oh wait no one came in??? Uhm no. I asked to go home and they are now trying to do everything in a rush because they forgot about me. In between waiting time they had me sit in a recliner that wreaked of urine smell and I was just so uncomfortable the whole time. I don't remember to being asked if I wanted to go home. Will never come here again willingly. Again staff was all nice just their procedures need work. read more

I loved talk with their staff about my stay at the location and all of my healthcare needs. The location provided great needs for extended care, above others than I've seen. This review is for the ER. The nurses and front desk were very helpful and sweet but the PA Sarah Groft was terrible. I came in with painful cramps and literally felt as if I was dying. After a pelvic exam and lab work the PA told me I was just "having a painful period". Why would I come to the hospital if I wasn't truly worried about my life? No further investigating for a proper diagnosis and not even an ultrasound was offered. I never even spoke with an actual doctor! They discharged me while I was still ill, in pain, and left untreated for my condition. I was there for 4 hours and was billed $3000... Not to mention Sentara is under federal investigation for FRAUD. They are stealing the taxpayers money and continue to provide terrible service to the people. If you care about your life stay away from Sentara. read more

I recently gave birth here and the experience was exceptional. I toured the maternity ward about a month before my due date and the nurse giving the tour was exceptional - easily providing advice, tips, and answering all our questions while showing us the rooms/spaces/birthing suites and momma baby recovery rooms. All of the staff were wonderful. Our overnight L&D nurse, Gabbi, was a rock star. Very attentive, paid close attention to me and made me feel like I was the only patient on the floor that night. They have snacks, coffee, drinks, and made it easy for me to walk around with a wireless monitor as per my request so I could have a more active labor until I was ready for my epidural. I was a planned induction at 39.5 weeks and was supposed to come in on a Friday night but they were so busy with active labor all that night that I was on standby - alllll night. I called several times but they didn't have a bed for me. Finally, after a sleepless night I was called to come in at 12:30 noon the following day. When we arrived they were all ready for us, had a nice birthing suite all set up, and check-in was a breeze. All the nurses were wonderful - our overnight nurse, Gabbi, was an angel and was really there for me the entire step of the way and was constantly checking on me. By 3am I was birthing my baby girl. I chose an epidural at around 5cm and the CRNA was exceptional. I was terrified of the epidural process and Gabbi held my hands while it was done and it was nowhere near as bad as I had made it to be in my mind. I was fortunate that everything was easy(ish) and normal and my baby girl was healthy so I was able to leave within about 28 hours of birth and was discharged and able to go home. All the staff - down to the food service - were prompt and efficient. This is a well-oiled machine and they have got this down to a science. Still, while providing individualized care and compassion. They treated us with such kindness and had all these little touches - like bringing a birthday cake and book for my daughter for us to celebrate her birthday, bringing little snacks and checking on me often, and just giving such loving care. First time mom here - and I couldn't be more pleased. My husband, who has a son from his first marriage, said this was head and shoulders a much better experience than when he had his son (in Missouri). He was very impressed. Sentara Leigh Hospital has been my favorite local hospital for many years. It's big enough to offer everything one would expect to find in a full-service hospital but small enough to not be too confusing to find your way around. It can get very busy in the Emergency Room but staff is friendly and informative and operates efficiently. Waiting areas for all departments are comfortable and of adequate size. Patient rooms are well equipped and spacious allowing room for family or friends to visit or even stay overnight with a patient. My wife and I have both had cause to visit the ER several times as well as having a couple outpatient procedures. My wife had a week long stay in the hospital last year. The staff provided great quality care and made her feel comfortable, they did a great job of putting us at ease during a very stressful time. I appreciate the parking situation at Leigh. I have always been able to easily find a parking space, this is often not the case at some other local hospitals. Entry and exit to and from the facility is easy with two traffic light controlled access points. Sentara Leigh is not the closest hospital to my house but it is always my first choice. read more

Got the care and relief I needed immediately! They numbed me up, explained what they were doing to me as doing, stopped when I asked, and cared about my health! Some people are special and give establishments unnecessary bad reviews simply because they don't know how to use google... Bleach is not just a "whitener" it is, in fact, a disinfectant AND a sanitizer. Now, the fact that they did not dilute it IS dangerous and needs to be put out of service for a while for it to air out... It has taken me some time to write this review as the events were traumatic for me, but I don't want this to happen to any other mothers or families. My son was born on 12/29/23 at 36 weeks but he was small so needed to be taken to the special care nursery. We were told that they should be able to care for him but if for some reason his case was more severe than expected, they transfer to Sentara Norfolk but if that were to happen we'd be communicated with ahead of time and given a chance to spend time with him before a transfer took place. The nurses were pleasant and everything was going well until Newport Year's Eve. We had spent some time with our sweet boy that night and told the nurse we would be back to ring in the new year with him, after I pumped and got a little rest. My husband and I made our way back to the nursery around 11:30 and were met at the door by the nurse letting us know the doctor was trying to put an IV into our son and she'd be down to speak with us shortly. We sat by his empty incubator while our son was having an IV inserted on the other side of the room. While this is happening, the doctor asks the nurse to get his paperwork ready because the transfer team should be there any minute. I remember my heart dropping and looking at my husband with tears welling up in my eyes. The doctor finally comes over and tells us that he has to be transferred because his previous IV fell out and she thinks it'll be better for him to go to SNGH. I asked her why we weren't notified and would we have even known if we hadn't made our way down there when we did. She preceded to essentially blame us saying that she expected us down there before now. And when she realized that was not okay she backtracked and basically said she has a lot of patients. All of this is being said to us in a room with two other families. So we weren't even given privacy to learn this information. Within minutes of us getting to the nursery...the team from CHKD transport. The doctor then gives us a half ass apology(excuse my language but there's no other way to describe it). The other families were decent enough to excuse themselves when they realized what was happening. My postpartum nurse that night worked hard to get me discharged early so I could follow my son to the new hospital. She even genuinely apologized that we found out the way we did. She had known well before we did and was expecting us to be notified by the doctor as is the policy but that never happened. I'm praying no other family has this experience especially when it's already traumatizing not being able to have your baby in the room with you. read more

sentara Lee Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. This hospital uses bleach to sanitize the elevator. Bleach is not a sanitizer. It's a whitener. It's not even diluted the proper way. They used it in the elevator that left a very strong smell no ventilation to expel the chemical. I got extremely ill and vomited in your elevator. it is misinformed. That bleach is not a sanitizer and bleach has a very strong scent. I definitely do not recommend this hospital. They are cleaning procedure is dangerous to people's health. Bleach does not and should not be used as a sanitizer. and they used it in an elevator with no ventilation doors shut. I would definitely not recommend this hospital to anybody. I experienced this problem while my daughter was giving birth to her second child. when my daughter was put in the second floor for recovery after the baby was born The staff was awesome. Excellent care follow through on every thing that needed to be done. Extremely happy with the aftercare they went on and beyond the call of duty. So the visit wasn't a complete disaster I put three stars in because of the nursing staff on the second floor thank you for your time and have a blessed day Christine Allen so the problem is the cleaning procedures. Sent home with referrals to schedule an appointment only to discover they don't "make referrals" and also referred to a primary care md that is actually a concierge sentara group md and not taking new patients!!! Try calling them back to remedy their mistakes and you will encounter the rudest, uncaring group of individuals. Please, take your loved ones elsewhere!!! read more

Omg what the hell is going on with this hospital it sucks. I came in for a injury I was put into the back hall stretcher H for 2 hours Clearly there were empty rooms. I never saw a nurse. I kept waving my hands no one came my daughter was told they told the nurse. No nurse. Finally after approximately 3 hours we got a room. Now that I am being discharged Gabby the Nurse disappeared. After 1 hour was told she went home. I was never given prescription a brace nor removed my IV now it's 8 pm told waiting on Angela who is she? Excellent experience from ER to transition unit. Nurses were very compassionate and helped me heal.

I had to be driven to the ER because of a severe pain in my calf. Upon arriving at the ER, it was full and out the door. The registration staff was efficient and friendly, Jan was funny and helpful. In no time I was in front of Dr. T and his concern, was the same as mine, could this be a clot? In no time they drew blood, had films processed and I just have a small muscle tear in my calf. Some meds and rest and I will be fine. We are very lucky to have so many great people working for Sentara. Jack Peirson, not the best patient, but I got the best care. read more

I was supposed to have surgery yesterday at the Ambulatory Surgical Center, and because registration/pre-admissions screening didn't do their jobs, I was in my gown about to get an IV to get started when the anesthesiologist cancelled for safety concerns. It turns out one of the medications I took the day before meant I couldn't undergo anesthesia. The pre-admissions screening nurse never called me prior to the surgery, and nothing was indicated on my pre-op paperwork or on the Surgical Center website to alert me that I should avoid this medication. I tried to reach the nurse and registration several times leading up to the procedure; no one ever answered the main number and the nurse line went straight to voicemail every time. I was never called back even though I left a message. Now it will be 6 weeks until I can get back in for the surgery, all because someone didn't do what they were supposed to do to make sure I was properly prepped. Waste of my time and the doctors' and nurses' time. On top of that, the surgery was related to fertility, so there goes 2 more cycles out the window. Two stars only because the nurses and doctors at the Surgical Center were VERY nice and apologetic. They were also very frustrated, and it sounded like this wasn't even close to the first time something similar has happened. read more

My mother was here visiting my sister who lives in VA, When she had a medical emergency. My mother was taken to Sentara Leigh ER by paramedics in septic shock, as a nurse myself I know how this might go. I flew from CA the same day to be here. My mother is going to be discharged soon, thanks to the phenomenal care she received from the physicians and most importantly the nursing staff from the ER to the ICU and intermediate care! A family member was here for surgery and so I was visiting a number of times and stayed in the room for quite a bit. A private room, there is also a sofa which isn't ideal for sleeping but is certainly much more comfortable than any chair. The room was very quiet with no hallway noise as long as the door was closed. The speaker for the television was over there by the sofa which was nice if the guest wanted to watch TV while the patient slept. Free speedy wifi. Nice! Now if we could just cut down the number of interruptions throughout the night so that people could get more than an hour's sleep at a time, that would be awesome. read more

We have been here 12 hours, no vending machines, due to construction , and not one staff member has offered my sister even a drink of water. Being weak and barely able to stand, dizzy and confused is not stable. The so-called medical professional lied on my paperwork and told me things that were different than what was shown in test results. Again, if you value your life and take being cared for seriously, this is not the place for you. I went in with severely high blood pressure, I was sick to the point of vomiting and you know what they did? Gave me potassium. There was no care plan. They talked amongst themselves and told me they didn't know what was wrong. I knew I wasn't going to be helped when I was sitting there unable to sit up in my room for a damned hour before someone finally thought it was high-time to check on me. The medical professional was rude and when I asked if she could at least give me something for my headache and nausea she caught an attitude, sucked her teeth, bawled up her face and said that's something I need to see my primary care physician about. Well guess what? People don't go to the emergency department for fucking fun. I wouldn't be writing this if I didn't get notification that data was added to my chart from this BULLSHIT VISIT I had on the 6th of March. The issue has persisted and I wasn't helped. At all. I have no will to talk to these people. Not that the woman who so-called 'cared' for me would even reach out or try to make things right. She clearly doesn't care about the well-being of her patients or their concerns. She couldn't even be bothered when I was sitting there right in front of her face. read more

had the most amazing birth experience here at sentara! everyone was so nice and encouraging and did what they could to make me most comfortable thru my labor and and recovery, and were so kind and discreet with my issues after as well. Absolutely horrible with the exception of the daytime nursing staff, especially Stephanie, and the night nurse attending my father. My father was there for a week. Not once did a physician talk to a family member and we were there almost around the clock. The only time a doctor (Tran) came in was to initiate palliative care and he said absolutely nothing to anyone and was brief with my father. We did see a PA once, to tell my father he had essentially no hope of recovery and would most likely not come off high flow oxygen. It was only after this, and an uninvited visit by a pastor from Lake Taylor that my dad decided to accept palliative care. The charge nurse on my fathers last night lacked all compassion and was straight up rude. I left the room and was told by her I am not allowed to roam the halls. I told her I was on my way to the restroom and asked if if that was ok. She did attempt to rally and be nice much later in the night but the impression she first made was what I will remember. I also do not recall one time seeing a patient advocate. Not sure why my dad was not assigned one or maybe they just ignored him. After my father passed we called a funeral home and talked to a nurse passing along some info on where he was going and phone contact numbers. Another nurse confirmed my dad's passing and other than that no one came to talk with us on what will happen next. We thought we were set with the funeral home and departed. I get a voicemail from security and apparently they are the ones who arrange transport. Well someone from the hospital staff should have been there for us and provided the proper information. Instead my dad was stuck there an extra day. In a nutshell the entire experience was nothing less than horrible. My dad did get lucky having very nice attending nurses but the rest of the staff pretty much sucks. If this is the best service you provide I feel sorry for any patient that walks through your doors. If anyone from Sentara would like to discuss or personally apologize my number is 757-560-3828. And a foot note, once my dad started palliative care his blood oxygen levels remained in the normal range until he was down to 2L on the regular oxygen machine, contrary to the PA's prediction. read more

My wife recently gave birth to our first child here. While we didn't choose Sentara Leigh (it's the hospital her obgyn delivers at), we are more than pleased it's where the big day went down. All the nurses were incredibly helpful. It wasn't just a job to them...they cared about my wife and baby's well being. The other staff that we interacted with (cafeteria workers, maintenance people, front desk and clerical workers, cleaning crew, etc) were all over the top kind. The hospital itself recently finished major renovations and it showed. Everything looked and felt brand new and was as clean as could be. read more

This review is based on my mother who had knee replacement surgery at this hospital. My mother had knee replacement surgery here and I am completely impressed. Sentara called my mother (per instructions) the day before the surgery and gave her a time of arrival. She was ready and prepped 3 hours later. An hour after that, she was in revcovery. Everything went as expected and without any hitches. By early evening she was already completing her first physical therapy session. They were intern students of Old Dominion University and very professional. By the time dinner came around they handed my mother a delicious looking meal consisting of roast pork with gravy, sweet potato mash and steamed broccoli. I forgot I was at a hospital for a second. The nurses were very friendly. Another lady came by asking my mother if she'd care for some snacks. Speaking of snacks, there's even a corner of refreshments for the families in the waiting area. They had soda, water, coffee, juice, milk, and even frozen dinners in the freezer. WOW! Talk about hospitality. The facility was perfectly lit (no too sterile), very clean, it didn't smell like a hospital, and easy to find your way. I think this is a beautiful hospital that truly cares for it's patients. I still can't get that dinner entree out of my head!! read more

I've been coming to Sentara Leigh Hospital for many years to get labs or x-rays and I cannot remember if I had a bad experience. The staff are super friendly, compassionate, professional, all around extraordinary. In addition, I did have my left knee replacement surgery performed here back in 2017 and I am looking forward to getting the right knee replacement surgery performed here soon. read more

I don't even know where to begin.. when we got admitted to Sentara Leigh Hospital I was very excited but nervous to meet our little boy. Every single nurse we had, blew me out of the water. Each nurse helped me, guided me, comfort me, and secured me in every way possible. I work in mental health where I know health providers and each position in the medical field are not appreciated enough. We wrote thank you cards to each of our nurses and wrote one to the entire floor to make sure they knew they were HIGHLY appreciated. To receive this in the mail, Bryce and I were just beyond amazed and grateful. We couldn't have asked for a better experience, even though things went a different way then originally planned. Went to the ER for abdominal pain on Thursday, 2 December. Arrived around 10 am and by 3:30 I was on my way to surgery for appendicitis. All ER folks were awesome. They asked questions, actually listened to my responses, and got all testing and surgical consults done in great time. Surgical staff were also awesome. Extremely professional and caring staff. I couldn't have been more pleased with the care I received. Thank you for the attention to detail and devotion each staff member provided during my stay. read more
