Big hospital with friendly staff! Visite someone here recuperating and was impressed at how it was run. Good compassionate people working in their appropriate respective field!

Sentara Leigh Hospital has been my favorite local hospital for many years. It's big enough to offer everything one would expect to find in a full-service hospital but small enough to not be too confusing to find your way around. It can get very busy in the Emergency Room but staff is friendly and informative and operates efficiently. Waiting areas for all departments are comfortable and of adequate size. Patient rooms are well equipped and spacious allowing room for family or friends to visit or even stay overnight with a patient. My wife and I have both had cause to visit the ER several times as well as having a couple outpatient procedures. My wife had a week long stay in the hospital last year. The staff provided great quality care and made her feel comfortable, they did a great job of putting us at ease during a very stressful time. I appreciate the parking situation at Leigh. I have always been able to easily find a parking space, this is often not the case at some other local hospitals. Entry and exit to and from the facility is easy with two traffic light controlled access points. Sentara Leigh is not the closest hospital to my house but it is always my first choice.

Omg what the hell is going on with this hospital it sucks. I came in for a injury I was put into the back hall stretcher H for 2 hours Clearly there were empty rooms. I never saw a nurse. I kept waving my hands no one came my daughter was told they told the nurse. No nurse. Finally after approximately 3 hours we got a room. Now that I am being discharged Gabby the Nurse disappeared. After 1 hour was told she went home. I was never given prescription a brace nor removed my IV now it's 8 pm told waiting on Angela who is she? Warning go somewhere else never again totally ignored

The lovely woman checked me in and handed me over to two other lovely ladies who were very kind. They got my weight and asked some basic questions. One of them actually had the same pair eyewear Larkin frames as me (we chatted about our magnet frame collection) before telling me to pick a seat and wait to be called. They had me seen very quickly, maybe it was 5 minutes before I was brought to the back. My ride didn't even make it in the door yet. They placed me in what felt like a cubical. Only wide enough for one person. Matt (in-take nurse) was very kind. He put in my IV. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to communicate that the vein he went for was a rolling vein and the hardest one to stick. He did an amazing job getting the IV needle in with all the uncontrollable tremors I was experiencing. If my arm hadn't bruised, I would have been absolutely shocked. I was moved into a make shift "private room", which I'm very grateful for. Dr. Michael J. Bono, MD was my doctor and, would you know it, it was his last shift EVER (42 years) before retiring. It was GOD who blessed me as his last patient. Turned out he and my Like-a-Dad (EMT) actually worked together 20+ years prior. Dr.Bono made sure to get the answers I needed and the treatment I so desperately needed. He gave me a few referrals and recommendations on great physicians. There was a gorgeous lady nurse who kept checking in on me but I was so out of it that I did catch her name. I wish I got it because she was so sweet and funny. She kept my spirits up. She felt like a guardian angel. Before leaving (mind you I'm completed drugged up on meds they gave me) Chris (nurse) made sure to get a very important message through my drugged up head. I remember seeing just his face with a flat cap on, playfully yelling at me about the do's and don'ts on the prescription they had given me. This was the best experience I ever had with a hospital. I was scared to death and you all worked together to keep me calm and playful. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. If I ever end up back there again, I pray to have the same experience.

He was seen in the Emergency Department, the Pediatric ICU, and in the in-patient Neuroscience unit, along with being seen by doctors in Endocrinology. Every single person, from the nursing care partners, to the nurses to the doctors and specialists, were fully engaged in his treatment and care. They provided regular updates on his status and the treatments he was receiving. Their professionalism and dedication made this scary experience much easier to deal with and I was confident that my son was receiving the best care possible. In addition to the amazing medical staff, the rest of the CHKD staff was very helpful and attentive as well, to include the dietary specialists, the intake registration, the janitorial staff, the Chaplain, the pharmacy and the integrative care team. I've never had such a positive medical experience in my life and I really want to thank CHKD for helping my son through this difficult situation.

She was exceptional, as was Ryan, the registered nurse who cared for my son in the post-operative unit. About a week before surgery, I was informed that only one parent would be allowed to stay overnight. After surgery, we were transferred to 7C - POD A, where Mikayla was our registered nurse during the day shift (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) on Wednesday and Thursday. I was told my son would need to stay overnight so the medical team could monitor his fluid intake and ensure he was able to take his medications. When we arrived in Room 718A, I noticed there was another patient area on the opposite side of a curtain. I asked Mikayla if another family could be assigned to the room, and she confirmed that they could. Since there was only one bathroom, it would also have to be shared. I immediately had concerns about this arrangement. There was very little privacy, and I did not feel comfortable or safe not knowing who might be staying on the other side of the curtain. Sharing a bathroom with another family also raised concerns about sanitation. After we settled into the room, Mikayla brought in IV Tylenol and explained that the physician had ordered Motrin to be given orally, which made sense because they wanted to monitor my son's ability to swallow. However, I mentioned that Ryan and Dr. Baldassari had both informed me that my son would also receive a steroid to help reduce swelling in his throat. Mikayla was unaware of this medication at first, but after I explained what I had been told, the steroid was eventually administered through his IV. At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, another family was admitted to the other side of our room. It appeared to be a husband, wife, and their child. My concern is this: if I was told only one parent could stay overnight, why was it acceptable for two parents to stay with another patient in the same room? In addition, I could clearly hear conversations regarding that child's medical care and upcoming procedure. This was a significant violation of patient privacy. Sharing a room separated only by a curtain, along with sharing a bathroom, did not seem appropriate from either a privacy or sanitation standpoint. Unfortunately, my interactions with Mikayla became increasingly uncomfortable. I felt that she became visibly frustrated with me. She rolled her eyes, and her tone of voice changed after I expressed that I did not want to stay another night with my three-year-old son. I understood the medical team's concerns because my son was reluctant to take his Tylenol and Motrin by mouth and had not met the required fluid intake. He drank approximately 190 mL instead of the required 300 mL for discharge. However, I explained that he is only three years old, had just undergone major surgery, and was not in a familiar environment. I assured her that he would likely drink more and take his medication once he returned home. Later that morning, after I asked when the doctor would be coming by, Mikayla stated that the physician had already seen me. I explained that a doctor briefly came into the room around 6:00 a.m., which startled me because I was asleep, and I was not under the impression that another overnight stay would be necessary. I politely requested to speak with the physician again. Mikayla appeared irritated and responded that she would send the doctor a message herself. After breakfast, Mikayla returned and informed me that she was preparing my son's discharge paperwork so we could "skedaddle." I found that comment to be unprofessional and inappropriate when speaking to a patient's family. While reviewing the discharge instructions, she repeatedly asked me, "Make sense?" I felt that her communication was condescending rather than respectful. I already had Tylenol and Motrin at home, but Dr. Baldassari had informed me that a prescription for Dexamethasone would also be sent to our pharmacy. I asked Mikayla whether that prescription had been sent. She stated that she was unsure and would contact the physician. After we packed our belongings, she returned and asked which pharmacy we used instead of confirming that the prescription had already been sent. I explained that we live in North Carolina and asked that it be sent to our local CVS pharmacy. I never received a notification from the pharmacy that day. The following morning, July 3, 2026, I contacted the hospital and spoke with the charge nurse on the morning regarding the prescription for Dexamethasone. The charge nurse searched the system and told me the prescription was sent to CHKD outpatient pharmacy located downstairs in the hospital. I informed her I told Mikayla before I left yesterday and I watched her right the pharmacy down to send the order to due me living in North Carolina. The charge nurse explained it wasn't Mikayla's fault.

Once I passed the background check, I was given a parking pass valid for the next few days. I parked in the parking garage as instructed by my nieces husband. On one of my visits, I walked through the oldest structure on campus which was the original hospital built in 1827. This is the oldest military hospital in the US. It still had the original stone exterior (outsise of original hospital) which had been closed in with hallways surrounding it. I checked out some cool paintings throughout the hospital. The discussion appeared to involve the patient's private medical information and was conducted in a manner that sounded more like gossip than a legitimate clinical discussion. Before the physician became involved in the conversation, the female and male nurses referred to the patient by name and appeared to access or review his medical chart while discussing him. During the conversation, they discussed details of his medical condition, treatment history, and other information that appeared to come directly from his medical record. The female nurse stated that the patient had arrived at the hospital earlier that morning, between approximately 9:00 and 10:00 a.m., because antibiotics previously prescribed by Sentara Hospital were not improving his strep throat. She further stated that the patient had remained in the waiting room for approximately seven hours and discussed delays related to his testing and/or retesting for strep throat. The nurse also mocked the patient for crying and becoming emotional while seeking care for his worsening condition. The tone of the discussion appeared dismissive and disrespectful toward the patient and his medical concerns. Additionally, the female nurse stated that she had not documented everything that had been discussed or communicated regarding the patient's condition in his medical chart. The statement was made in the context of discussing the patient's care and raised concerns about whether relevant information had been omitted from the medical record. The conversation further suggested that concerns raised by the patient may not have been fully reflected in the chart, potentially affecting the evaluation and timeliness of his care. The fact that the patient was identified by name, that his chart appeared to be accessed and discussed outside the context of direct patient care, and that multiple healthcare professionals participated in the conversation raises serious concerns regarding patient confidentiality, professionalism, and compliance with healthcare privacy standards. The statements regarding prolonged waiting times, delayed testing, and incomplete documentation also raise concerns about the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of the care provided.

The MRI room can feel a little intimidating. I'm claustrophobic so I'd recommend taking an anxiety med before going. Your doctor can prescribe one prior to your appointment. The process took about an hour, so be prepared to be inside the MRI machine for a bit. You will hear strange sounds and it's tight in there. But it's really not that bad. Ask for the mirrored glasses so you can see outside of the machine, so you don't freak out. Also you have to be still, but expect everything you never expected to itch, to start as soon as they strap you in. Lol. But the procedure went well, the staff was accommodating and friendly, and I recommend them for your MRI needs!!
