This is one of the best campgrounds out there. Plenty of space and very well-kept. The bathrooms are clean. The camp host/manager is very nice & helpful. My family camps here often. Great hikes (short and long) from the campground on the AT. No phone service, but you can get phone service with a short drive down the road a few miles or hike up to Jarrard's Gap (@ 30 minutes). Lake has great activities with fishing, canoe, paddle boat rentals, and swimming. Lots of wildlife. We love love love it at Lake Winfield Scott! We have tent camped at the following sites on the South Loop and like them all - 6, 8 (double), 10, & 11(double). My favorites are 6 & 8. Site 7 seems like it would be good too. They are all roomy!

The lake is a great place to fish, whether you're an experienced angler or just relaxing on the shore with family. The hiking trails are well-marked and offer a mix of easy loops and more challenging climbs, all with stunning mountain and forest views. The new visitor center is a real highlight--it's modern, clean, and packed with helpful information about the park's history, wildlife, and local attractions. The staff is friendly and always ready with tips on the best hiking routes or picnic areas.Overall, Vogel State Park is a peaceful escape that combines natural beauty, recreation, and great facilities. One thing I really enjoyed were the private bathrooms. Each has a toilet, sink (with handsoap), and a shower that can be adjusted for small children. The bathrooms are kept sparkling clean by the park. Dogs are more than welcome. In fact, most of the people there brought one or two dogs. The lots vary in size from canvas tent and car all the way to travel bus. It's great for a weekend trip away from the city noise!

It is a very beautiful section to hike, run and/ or camp on! Along the route you will pass over Preachers Rock! This is one of the best spots to watch sunrise if you're able to get up there before it begins! It is just over a mile from the parking lot of Woody Gap to the top of Preachers Rock. Along the route to Blood Mountain you will pass several designated camping spots (free to camp, first come first serve). I have yet to camp on this section, but I've picked a couple spots to try out next time! There are 3 water crossings along the route that you can fill up at; just make sure to filter the water before you drink it. I recommend bringing a Sawyer Mini water filter. It fits into the palm of your hands, so it doesn't take up any room in your pack. The trail itself is very easy to follow. I was a little nervous at first that I may get off course or take a wrong turn/ trail, but I can assure you that there is only one main trail that runs from Woody to Blood. There are some side trails that intersect, BUT they either lead to campsites or shelters. As long as you stay on the main trail, it is hard to get lost! I can't wait to go Bach again and run from Woody Gap to Neel Gap which will be around 20 miles round trip.

The entry fee was 8 per adult (kids are free) which also includes a van ride to the overlook. Or you can choose to hike which wasn't a long hike but steep from what I saw. A must do for anyone visiting the area! Ohh... and make sure you watch the little movie at the top, it's very cool to see how one place is its own little world in different seasons and the history behind the place.

The original 1935 stone tower was torn down in 1947 and replaced with a steel tower before the current structure was built - we'll folks looks like it's time to build another tower this one is in a state of disrepair. I came here to observe 4 states from the highest point in Georgia, but apparently the observation tower is in such bad shape that it is now closed to the public and your adventure will end after climbing a few flights of stairs ending at the base of the observation deck yeah there's a view from the lower level but in my opinion not worth the price of admission. Thankfully there's a shuttle van that takes you from the parking lot level to the top it runs about ever 10 minutes, our driver was very friendly and tried his best to entertain us during the short drive to the top but there's not much to say - the museum at the top is okay and takes about 2 minutes to tour it then time you walk the lower deck and wait for the shuttle back down - I purchased a refrigerator magnet for the RV from the gift shop and headed for the truck. I guess I am fortunate that I came and saw this, although it was never on my bucket list, I'm still trying to figure out why there's an old train engine in the museum it's quite the anachronism...
