Went in for a cleaning and found a small cavity "they could take care of right away" I said if it's 30 minutes or less I'll wait and do the filling now. I waited over an hour and a half then finally said I have to get to work and I'll just reschedule. Fast forward to today, I get 3 reminder texts about the appointment, but still has to be rescheduled because I didn't confirm. I said if you can't see me today, I'll gladly find a new dentist. As a generally healthy human, the dental work was fine (they completed 4-5 cleanings, nothing major) but the staff always try's to upsale every experience. I have straight teeth and do not need Invisalign, a night guard, a water pick, or an even fancier toothbrush. Office hours aren't that great either. read more

Horrible experience! I should have read all the reviews before going in. I went in last month for a long over due cleaning and left terrified. First off they had me wait over half an hour even though I was 10 mins early to my appt. Then after X-rays and all that, they said I'm at HIGH risk for periodontal disease and the cost of treatment was $2k out of pocket (and I have great insurance) and it was vital I proceeded. I was shocked and scared but confused because I know I needed a cleaning but I brush and floss daily and am generally healthy so doubted my teeth were that bad. My husband was equally shocked and we both agreed they're just price gouging people. My mom told her dentist the cost and treatment plan and he was also shocked! The overall treatment was great. I went in for tooth pain on a same day appointment which was great. I did not love how the staff was super salesy on Invisalign. Seeing all of the other reviews about a similar experience makes their pitch very incredible in my opinion. That all being said, they were all friendly and took good care of my tooth. Let me start by saying I am terrified of dentists, I broke a tooth and needed a crown. I went to Aspen dental and was told theres no way to save the tooth I need implants and a sinus surgery. Well i made an appointment here and Dr Penland said she could fix it no problem and didn't try and tell me I needed a million other procedures like Aspen dental. I live six hours away but Dr Penland made me feel comfortable so I made the drive and my experience was amazing. Dr Penland was able to do the entire procedure with zero pain and worked very efficiently because she knew I was afraid of dentists. I cannot recommend Dr Penland enough. Horrible experience! Wanted cleaning and xrays as covered by my Humana dental plan. Sat in waiting room extra half hour past appointment as they forgot about me. Told the 5 people that I interacted with only do what is covered and if not I will not pay for it. Dozens of xrays, poking and proding they presented me ith a multipage list of many things they said I needed to the tune of many thousands of dollars which I said will nevr happen so they refused to do the cleaning and bill Humana a lot of money and they paid for the non requested comprehensive exam which I did not want nor ask foe,r and months later sent me a bill for $150. I will never pay as I consider that to be a predatory practice. I am a totally disabled senior. I was told I would be turned over to a collection bureau. I was, initially, impressed with the efficiency of the office but after two visits, I can see how profit on unnecessary products and procedures is a driving force. I have a tiny gap between my two front teeth so I wasn't surprised that they tried to sell Invisalign at my first visit. But when my 24yo son went in for his initial visit and he has not only had traditional braces recently but also another invisible aligner company and has beautiful teeth and they still tried to sell a person in their young 20s who's a graduate student a $5000 service and make him self-conscious about the alignment of his teeth, it was a red flag. I did decide to return six months later for my second cleaning and planned to talk to them about this. They, then, solicited more procedures that are not covered by dental insurance including an oral cancer screening (which is often free at dentist's offices) and hydroxy gen which retails for far less at other dental offices. I paid for it there but of their sales pitch and the concern they present you if you don't get them especially right after a cleaning. I, subsequently, did some research regarding the price of the product wholesale and the average retail at other dental offices. I will not return. Well, I chose this dentist based on good google reviews. First, let me start by saying Dr. Penland seems like a nice person and a good dentist, however, her office staff, in particular her office manager Marilyn, are HORRENDOUS, UNPROFESSIONAL, liars. Long story (kind of) short they tried to sell my husband Invisalign, showing him a fancy picture of his teeth and told him he grinds his teeth ( I have been with him for 25 years and know for a fact he does not) and will lose his enamel if he didn't correct this with the Invisalign. My husband has a disability that makes it difficult for him to retain and process this kind of information. I was not present for this conversation and my husband was convinced he needed this. At 6pm when we were checking out I signed a consent for him (which we did not get a copy of) and they charged my HSA card $1000. Well that night me and my husband talked about it and he realized he did not need an Invisalign, was concerned about using that money that he needed for other important medical expenses, and felt like Marilyn was using some high pressure sales tactics. Additionally, his teeth are perfectly straight, he has never had braces, and no other dentist ever told him he needed anything like this or that he grinds his teeth. So I called first thing the next morning at 8am to cancel. Marilyn said it was too late?!?! Ummm it was far less than 24 hours you can cancel a house or a car in that amount of time. She gave me the run around (her best skill set) and said she would get back to me the following week. She also said to only deal with her. This didn't sit right with me so I called the next day and spoke with Cat. She said it was no problem to cancel, Dr. Penland hasn't signed off on the case yet, and she would make sure she didn't sign off so we could be refunded. So the next week I had to leave several messages for Marilyn, had to complain on the last one and ask for a call back from Dr. Penland to get her to call me back. She told me I would have a check in about two weeks. I wasn't thrilled they couldn't just refund my card, and my husband was having other medical issues that we really needed this money for. Well 4 weeks later and no check. I call Marilyn and again have to leave her several messages before I get a return call. She tells me my check is in process and she isn't sure when I will get it?! She also calls me sarcastic and rude-what great customer service skills! Meanwhile she is condescending and talks over you. She tells me the regional manager will call me. Today she had one of the regular office staff call and tell me "Marilyn spoke with the regional manager and it will be a few more weeks before you receive the check". I asked for the regional manager's name and phone number and was told I couldn't have it. I asked why Marilyn didn't call me herself and if she was in today. Staff member said she was not in and hung up on me. Called back and got answering service and was told Marilyn was in fact in today. I am so disgusted and have never dealt with any medical or dental office ever that has been so unprofessional. I regret ever going here and now have to find a new dentist for me, my husband, and my daughter because I simply don't trust this office with my money when they have been blatantly dishonest and rude. I pride myself on writing honest reviews that can help other people. In closing, I ask the office please not respond "please call us to discuss" because that is a joke!!!! Update 9/30/2020: well I got a call from Sheena, regional manager who seemed to care less about my concerns. BEWARE!!! They like to overcharge you for unnecessary procedures. I came here in 2016 to see Dr Gonzales, who I loved, with no issues. I recently went back 12/9/17 and was told that Dr Gonzales left the practice (Warning sign #1) and that I now have 'periodontal disease' and needed 2 crowns and 4 fillings (Warning sign #2). The bill to treat the supposed 'periodontal disease' ALONE came out to $706.60 out-of-pocket. The crowns and fillings would be even more 1000+. I have never had issues like this before so I sought a second opinion. My new dentist was shocked that I had been prescribed so many antibiotics because she saw absolutely no signs of 'periodontal disease' and saw that I only needed 1 crown. My new dentists is charging me $427 OOP for the fillings,crown AND cleaning. That's it!!!! This place is an absolute rip off please seek a second opinion if you're treated here. Also most insurance policies cover a SECOND OPINION visit so it was free of charge for me. It's 2017 and I don't have the time or patience for scams like these read more

Updated review: when I started going here a few years ago they were really great. Things have gone downhill since then. The dentist is great, and the hygienists are good, but I cannot deal with the incompetency of the office staff and scheduling. Twice my appointment was changed or rescheduled super last minute which made it difficult since I had already taken off work. Every time I've gone for the last 2 years there's always been some sort of billing issue. First they billed my old insurance, even though they had the new one on file. Then they received the insurance check at "another address" and just sat on it saying I owed them money until I had my insurance look into the issue. At least twice there's been issues where I've been over billed, and until I get the insurance involved and have them threatening to investigate they insist I owe them money. They purposely over billed me a higher rate other than the insurance negotiated rate and tried to bill me the difference. I spent hours talking with the office staff and my insurance company trying to get the issues resolved. And wouldn't you know it, I was correct every time. They are constantly trying to upsell you on unnecessary things, which is incredibly annoying. The breaking point for me was the last time I went, I was told after my cleaning "oh the dentist is busy, it'll be at least 30 minutes until she can see you". The whole reason I am going is to get my teeth cleaned and get everything checked BY THE DENTIST. I was told I either had to wait, come back another time, or just waive the dentist's check. So I waited, even though I was urged not to. This recently happened to another friend of mine who is a patient. If you can't have the dentist check teeth after appointments within a reasonable time frame, you're clearly overbooking! read more

I came to Lakeside for my dentistry needs for about a year after a recommendation from a friend. This was not a good recommendation. The whole time, I felt a bit scammed and pressured into treatments I wasn't sure if I actually needed.lts of pressure for oral cancer screenings on a yearly basis ($50 cha ching!) and they had me coming back every three months for a checkup. When I finally went to a new dentist, they had me back on a 6 month cleaning plan and had to replace my crown that was done incorrectly at Lakeside. At first, my experiences at Lakeside were perfectly fine. When my husband began going, he had trouble from the beginning. It began with him 'needing' a deep cleaning. Next thing we know, he's in 'need' of a root canal. My husband as having pain after a routine filling and went back to the office. As soon as the doctor began messing around, he began experiencing EXCRUCIATING pain. They continued to pump him full of numbing medication to no avail. Finally, they left him for a few minutes... during this time he passed out and even wet himself. When he woke up, he was delirious, in horrible pain, crying, and they told him they were going to send him to a specialist. They let him LEAVE the office and DRIVE in this condition. INCREDIBLY IRRESPONSIBLE. I rushed home from work after receiving a very confusing phone call from him. It was not until he drove himself to the CVS to fill a pain prescription that he began to regain his bearings and realized that he was wet... not from sweat. We talked to the office. We talked to the Dr. We submitted a formal request to the office and didn't even receive an apology. AVOID THIS OFFICE. Referred to this dentist by a friend, everything was great at first, I called to schedule an appointment on a specific day and time to match up with my orthodontist, receptionist repeated to me numerous of times the time and day. Got a message through text telling me a month earlier appointment, called to correct, another receptionist said he did not see me scheduled for that day to change it, however, the day he did see was 4 days prior to the day I asked for. I asked for this to be corrected, he refused and said I'll have to choose another day, I told him I'll just find another dentist, he said ok like he didn't care. The dental hygienist is wonderful and the doctor is pleasant. What is not pleasant is the terrible way this office handles billing. Never in my life has a company been so incompetent in this area. I paid upfront for everything was advised everything was covered, and then had to cough up more money. On day of the removal of invisiline stuff, I now had to pay more money! Mind you I had paid almost a year ago for everything, and again for retainers. Now I was charged even more, well over 8 months past because it can take up to 90 days for insurance to cover? When asked why then I was being charged after 8 months, no logical explanation could be provided. Don't even get me started on the confusion between dental and ortho appts. I would not recommend this dentist office to anyone. I went for a new patient appointment/routine dental cleaning and was unexpectedly drawn into what it felt like a timeshare sales-pitch for Invisalign. I was told that I had a severe overbite (previously undetected by my prior dentist of 5 years) that was causing my existing fillings to crack. They wanted me to come in the next morning to have my fillings redone and also pressured me to sign up for the Invisalign program immediately (out-of-pocket cost: over $5k) to "correct the bite issue." I was reluctant to sign anything due their high-pressure tactics and asked a dentist friend of mine what she thought. She stated that she always referred patients with "severe bite issues" to an orthodontist as these can be complicated to repair properly (and would be unlikely to be fixed by a cosmetic procedure such as Invisalign if truly severe). She also told me that this dental office is owned by a corporate group and it seems to be common practice for them to recommend expensive and possibly unnecessary procedures. I sought a second opinion yesterday and was told that my fillings are not cracked (slightly stained by coffee, yes) and are fine as is. I'm so grateful that I sought a second opinion. I used to love going to this place when Marilyn was the office manager; Dr Pendlen Is amazing but the lack of organization is outrageous and falls on her! Nope Nope Nope Nope! Short Review: Take your business elsewhere! This could be a VERY long review of why to avoid this dental office, but i'll make this short and to the point.. This office will max you out of your insurance in no time at all! On top of that I've had to file 2 formal complaints both with my insurance and with the dental review board for fraudulent billing(Collecting for services they never provided) and quality(or lack thereof) care. In my opinion, this place either missed something that was HUGE and potentially life threatening, or overlooked it in order to keep billing my insurance.. Either way, thats not something you want to deal with! After beginning the process of a root canal(after HUNDREDS of dollars in other dental care that should have never even been started) i was told.. seriously, sit down for this.. we're working on the wrong tooth and should have been doing work on a different tooth.. You're kidding me right? Nope.. can you hear the cash registers cha-chinging in the background, i certainly can! To add to my own grievances, every time i was in that office i saw elderly patients being taken there by caregivers.. If they're falsely billing and improperly caring for me, not elderly, not needing a caregiver, and someone who checks my bills, can you even imagine how they're billing and caring for them?? Needless to say, after hearing the basically whhhooops my bad comment, i left the office and immediately went elsewhere for a second opinion.. thankfully! please do your research.. you'll want to both like and trust them as they're super friendly and seemingly looking out for your best interest.. but read all the reviews, ask around.. Me and my insurance company spent a lot of money here and now i'm spending even more because of the negligence at this office.. They stop at nothing to make you feel comfortable and welcome and the facility is always kept so clean. Avoid like the plague. Keep getting unexpected bills. They try to reschedule on a monthly basis for absolutely no reason. Well, the reason is to get more money. After being quoted how much I would have to come out of pocket and explaining if it will be anymore I do not want the appointment, they promised that was it. What happens a few weeks later? I get a bill. Shocker. The receptionist is rude, I never even saw a dentist, only the assistant, and the lady in billing actually argued with me. I have damn near perfect teeth and meanwhile they wanted to book me for a 3rd time within a 3 month period. When I asked why, they said as a checkup from my last visit. My last visit was a deep cleaning. Since when do deep cleanings require follow ups? The place will book you and milk you dry. I ended up asking my friends father, who is a dentist, if any of this was necessary and after giving me an exam he thinks I have been scammed. the authorization specialist totally dropped the ball when getting auth from Tricare for a root canal for my husband. i ended up doing all the legwork. i ended up having to get the damn auth. Natalia totally became rude to deal with and did not even do her job to obtain the auth! My son was an ortho patient there as well. He showed up today to pick up his trays for invisilign and was told they had closed his case because the teeth weren't shifting and it had to be because he wasn't wearing his trays. they wanted $3000 to reopen the case!. i paid upfront for his invisilign and was not paying anymore! they were rude and unprofessional when telling me his case was closed and accused him of not wearing his trays.
