The sandwiches were great and the side salad too has a special maple vinaigrette. The word I would use to describe this place is eclectic. Theres a lot going on with this place. There's five different places to sit at, two of which are outside. You can sit inside at the main room or head downstairs where it's more private and comfy and then there's the quiet wine bar off to the side. Lots of mismatched new and antique furniture with old wooden plank floors. Parking is limited as there are only four spots behind the place and street parking otherwise. No drive up window either. They do offer some breakfast sandwich choices, but there were no croissants or other pastries to choose from besides one scone. I got the ham and cheese sandwich and enjoyed the crunchy ciabatta roll it came on. The coffee here is as good or better than Starbucks, so they get that important part of the formula right. When you finish your order and run your credit card, the tip screen will be waiting for you or add to the tip jar. The prices are reasonable and the service is friendly with free Wi-Fi. While in Madison for the weekend, Lakeside Street Coffee House became our go-to coffee shop. Open early in the mornings through early afternoon, it was the perfect spot to get our coffee fix! [[HIGHLIGHT]]One morning we physically went to Lakeside Street and were pleasantly surprised by the plethora of seating options: 2 spacious seating rooms upstairs and a full seating areas downstairs.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The cold brew was flavorful and delicious. Lakeside coffee is one of the best coffee shops in Madison. However, I wouldn't say it's because of the coffee drinks they serve. As a former barista, I have some training in the art of espresso. I have always felt the spro at lakeside it's a bit too bitter and light bodied for my taste. I am also slightly disappointed in the lack of latte art on their signature espresso drinks. However, lakeside has a special place in my heart for many reasons. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is outstanding. Well, this is a first. I've never seen a full service coffeehouse in Madison. And the yelp reviews didn't help either. Granted, I only searched a year back in the reviews, but saw no mention of this being a "wait for a table, have a waitress take your order" type of place. And seeing as the (sole?) waitress didn't have time to seat me (only two tables occupied on the upper level), I didn't have time to stay. I'm not rolling the dice on how efficient she would be, since she was covering two floors of patrons. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This was beyond confusing, seeing as there is a chalkboard menu right when you walk in. Gives the vibe of ordering at a counter, yet a waitress it is[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Always a lovely atmosphere in here. It's nestled right along the edge of Monona Bay (hence Lakeside) and it's the perfect place for this homey café. The service is always excellent. There's always a local artist's art up on the walls, and available for purchase. Oftentimes there's a local musician playing. The patio is amazing. The whole place is pretty big, but not crowded. Still really cozy. There's vintage vibes going on. The food and coffee has never disappointed. Highly recommend as a place to meet up with a friend or to study. read more

One of the cutest coffee shops I've ever been to. It felt like I was in a friend's cabin up north, the vibes were immaculate. Plus the windows overlook the lake so it really really felt like a cabin. I got their turkey club and a plain iced latte. Both were FANTASTIC. The sandwich was soooo delicious, and the latte was the perfect amount of bitter and flavorful. I absolutely loved both items and wish soooo desperately I lived closer to this place. I'd love to work or read here. They also seemingly have a wine bar at night, which sounds so freaking adorable. The decor the was vintage but bordered on dingy. Some of the seating was really nice but other spots just felt like filler. The food was tasty but the menu was not particularly inspired. The coffee was solid. I ordered a macchiato which was strong and tasty. My friend ordered a caramel latte which was a bit off and served with more foam than a standard latte. My favorite part was the location which sits at the edge of Monona Bay! On a nice day, this makes a good spot to get coffee or lunch! This isn't close to my home so I had never been to this neighborhood coffee shop. I'm glad we tried it. Overall positive experience. Cute setting with the waterfront, lots of outdoor seating and indoor seating and there would be plenty of shade on a sunny day. We waited a while for our drinks but we were not in a hurry. They use Rishi tea which is a favorite and local brand. My London Fog was delicious. My husbands Chai Latte was also good. There isn't a lot nearby it, so most people arrive on foot. I read about the confusion of entering the building, while the door in the center of the windows is a way to enter, if you go to the right side there's another door that leads immediately to the ordering spot. The menu's are right there. It is a bit tight if it's busy. There's outdoor seating by the door under the trees, another small porch spot at the back. Lots of indoor space in the front, back and downstairs! FAMILIES: there is a park with a path! If I would have known I would have considered bringing my kids. I came by on a Sunday morning at around 10:30 by my friend's recommendation. It was such a nice day and when I arrived, there was definitely a line out the door. I ordered a normal black coffee and a chocolate chunk cookie. A lot of the pastries were already sold out by the time we were ordering. My friend ordered a breakfast sandwich and a mocha. The cookie was good, pretty buttery and paired really well with the black coffee that I had. My friend's sandwich and mocha came out 20-30 minutes after we ordered and said that the sandwich was really tasty. I think my recommendation would be that if you're looking for something fast, this might not be the place on a summer weekend morning. If you have more time to spare and want something that requires time to prepare (i.e. not their ready made stuff like hot black coffee or pastries), then budget an extra 45 minutes between waiting to order and waiting for your food. read more

Flavorless, visually bland, and the combinations are utterly dull. When curry chicken tastes like baby food and baked goods taste like mush, something has gone gravely wrong. The service is a step below the food. The staff generally seems upset about the tasks before them and upset about the presence of customers. The management is the crowing achievement. They will the extra mile to make you feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. For thirty years, I've eaten out five to ten times a week and no place has worked so hard to be so unpleasant in any way, at any time. So much effort goes into being so consistently unpleasant in so many ways to so many people... whatever goal(s) this place is pursuing, there must be ways of getting there without being so aggressively unkind. It would be difficult to find a worse restaurant experience in Dane County Nothing in this review addresses live music, which I have not seen here. read more

I must start by saying that my cortado with almond milk was absolutely divine. I was a bit confused when we walked in because you have to walk through what looks like an ordering and dining area and go all the way to the back to find the cafe. The ambience is nice once you get back there though with some seating on the main level and cozy couches downstairs. The lunch menu seemed small but somehow all 4 in my group ended up getting something different and everything was phenomenal. They have gluten free bread but i didn't see it on the menu so just have to ask. I'm glad i did! It was absolutely delicious and held up great toasted for my pesto melt. I always try to find a local coffee shop when traveling and this was so great! It was a short drive from the Alliant Energy Convention Center, so skip the Starbucks! I just wish I had more time to hang out here.. It looks like an old house and there are so many comfortable seating options. You could totally go here to work or read a book, and not feel rushed. There is a front room, plus the main room where you order and they're preparing the food. There even appeared to be a downstairs which I didnt have time to see, plus seating outside. You order at the counter and they will bring to you. Coffee options were pretty typical, I was kind of disappointed that I missed their seasonal offerings.. FYI they are not on the big menu board but just a small sign at the order counter. You can tell the food was fresh and of good quality. This is my fourth year in Madison, as as a graduate student I was always trying to find the "right" coffee shop (i.e., affordable, not too crowded, good vibes, good food/drink). Lakeside has undoubtedly checked every single box. With bottomless coffee options, great sandwhiches, uh-mazing staff, and well, a lakeside view, it's the ultimate coffee shop vibe. They are taking the health and well-being of their customers seriously with their whole process set up to be minimal contact and maximum physical distancing. The baristas were friendly and welcoming, though it did take a pretty long while for our orders to come out. My veggie pesto sandwich came in perfectly toasted ciabatta with cheese, wilted greens, and an egg on the inside. My wife liked her croissant. Love at first sight. I stopped by on a whim on a drizzly Sunday afternoon not knowing what to expect. Last time I was here, years ago, it was for yarn and knitting classes. Now it is what it's supposed to be: the spirit of the place has settled into its old storefront bones and offers no pretenses only warmth, comfort, a true neighborhood vibe. People understand what to do here. Witness the spacious front room, quiet as a library or chapel, everyone on their laptops, relaxing at small tables or on comfy and worn furniture. The bar is here occupying a very incidental though convenient space, becoming a wine bar for evening musical events (classical guitar, traditional Irish music). I sat at the bar with my coffee and scone (Lazy Jane's) and read Cormac McCarthy. Complete satisfaction. At the 'back of the store' a wall of windows showcases the bay's water; this is where food is ordered and prepared, and there are a variety of tables to suit you or your party. A friend and I will return this week for the music and a meal. I'm already eyeing their Ham and Swiss on toasted sourdough ($9.), but breakfast is served all day...could go for a Turkey Chipotle breakfast sandwich ($5.50). read more
