Lally's is a blast back to the past, the inside decor is definitely old school from back in the day. Everything is clean and well maintained. The food is good and hearty, at a great price and the staff if friendly and helpful. The menu is not very large but they do very well at preparing the items they offer. I grew up in NW Iowa and returned for a visit recently. Instead of going to the well-known local steakhouse I usually frequent, I decided to give Lally's a try. What a gem! This place is like stepping back in time to an old-style diner restaurant. It's clean but refreshingly simple - no pretense, just good food and honest hospitality. I ordered the broasted chicken, and it was absolutely excellent. The seasoning was just right, providing the perfect complement to the meat without overpowering it. The chicken was broasted to perfection with a thin, golden crust that had that satisfying crunch when you bit into each piece. As someone who considers himself a chicken aficionado and has eaten chicken around the world, I can confidently say they have the best broasted chicken in the country - far better than Sneaky's in Sioux City. The side dishes were solid, and the pie was just like mom used to make. But beyond the food, I love the small-town, old-style friendly atmosphere that makes you feel genuinely welcome. Le Mars is lucky to have two restaurant gems: Archie's and Lally's. If you're looking for excellent home-style cooking in an authentic setting, I highly recommend stopping by Lally's. Broasted chicken is the thing to order here. Nice little small town diner with good food. Baked beans were delish.. I almost gave them three stars because the service was friendly but once served they never came back! However the other restaurant we were going to eat at had a family emergency and had to close so I think this place was a little overwhelmed... you get what you expect here. read more

We stumbled on this establishment while on one of our road trips. Lally's is an old family owned business, with a popular local following. While enjoying a noon respite, we noticed that local patrons seemed to be favoring the dinners, rather than sandwiches. Chicken seems to be their favorite fare. We noticed that cheese balls are offered in several diners in this area; we gave them a try... deep fried cheddar cheese. The cheddar was very mild; not a very exciting offering for a Wisconsin Cheese Head, but now I know what that is all about. I had the BBQ beef sandwich which was no more than pulled meat with Sweet Baby Ray's sauce. Sweet seems the rule of the day; I tried the lemonade and found it was too sweet and didn't offer much lemon flavor. Overall, the food was inexpensive and passable, but not exciting. read more

While traveling through the snow into the middle of nowhere Iowa, we happened upon this place and were terribly glad we did. The service was fast and super friendly and after a long day of airports, the home style food hit the spot. We split the chili cheese fries with the seasoned fries -- I really wish I'd just ordered these for my dinner and not shared with others because they were very tasty. I had the broasted chicken for my main dish, which was wonderful and incredibly juicy. The sides, unfortunately, were quite bland and a blemish on an otherwise yummy and indulgent meal (maybe I'm just really used to Southern cooking with lots of flavor). To top it all off, we picked out a slice of pie from their extensive list and then trekked back into the wintery mess with ridiculously full bellies. read more

Not my favorite. Had the buffet and the ribs were ok, but way too much sauce. The salads could have been refreshed, though the 3 bean salad was good. The baked beans tasted like the canned kind. Another raved about the dressing though. It's an unassuming place though that is not fussy and quick. read more

Good customer service is hard to find, so if that is what you are looking for, you won't find it at Lally's! We walked in and weren't greeted at all, just basically stared at until we seated ourselves. Not really sure who are waitress was, because there were 3 different people involved, the one who took our order, the extremely rude, impersonal older one that dropped our plates in front of us and forgot some of the food, and the one who brought our ticket over. When we left, it was the same rude lady who dropped our food off, at the register. She took our ticket and the only thing she said to us was how much we owed. We thanked HER, and still got zero response. This might be the first restuarant I've EVER been to, where not one person thanked us for coming. It was such an odd atmosphere, clearly filled with small town locals, who right away make you feel unwelcomed. We were here for Ice Cream Days 2019. Long time family connections in town brings us here once a year. We went to this establishment out of respect for our extended family. It took over 30 minutes for anyone to even take our orders. The staff seemed uninterested. The food was saturated in oil. The food did not set will with several in our party. We also noticed the diner area floors varied from very sticky to slippery covered in oil spilled from somewhere. Place also needed a serious cleaning. Old memorably scattered throughout is covered in layers of dust. Basically this is an instance where the Health Department needs to do a snap inspection. Time has pass this place by and the current generation are living on a family name that held respect in the town at one time. Its time to sell or close. I recommend passing on this place. Many other great eatery's in town and sadly this is no longer one of them. Our family have agreed never again. Le Mars is our roots, but this place, we won't claim has quality. read more

The last time I dined at Lally's was November 2011. A family member wanted to go there for lunch and the rest of us obliged. Only one person in our group didn't get food poisoning. The sickness sent two of us to the hospital. Come to find out later on, some friends had been dining there the same day and they too became ill. Of course, one can get food poisoning from any restaurant or from a home-cooked meal. However, we should have taken more seriously the restaurant's lack of cleanliness. read more
