Oh Lalo! I came here on a Sunday morning and the place was absolutely packed. It seemed to cater to a lot of American tourists (like us), ex-pats and hip Roma residents. We waited at least 25 minutes to get seated, which was at a long communal table that reached almost the entire length of the restaurant. The place is super busy, which was a good sign, but it also meant it took a while to get our order taken and afterwards it was a bit difficult to get any server's attention since they always seemed to be in a rush to serve someone else. The food, however, was great. The pastries were delicious and they had one guava-filled brioche bun that was a big hit with us. The smoothies were also really good with a variety of different combinations - I got the "white" one with coconut and almond milk. For my main, my friends ordered the pancakes of the day and the yogurt with granola. I was looking for something a little meatier so I ordered the lechon sandwich which was soooooooo good and the perfect ratio of bread to lechon to greens. The portions are great here and I was very full at the end. I would definitely recommend going here - but try going early or on a weekday morning when there likely isn't a huge line! read more

A casual eating spot great for breakfast and lunch. Open plan, beautiful tiled floor and walls and the long wall of painted cartoon characters is sure to bring you a smile. Do be aware that if you are solo or a larger group, you will be placed at the long, communal dining tables. The few two-seaters hug one of the walls and there are only about 3 tables for a group. The wait staff is attentive without being pushy nor aggressive. Now, to the food. Mostly Mexican breakfasts with a few continental and healthy choices thrown in. First thing after you sat down, one of the wait person will come around with a tray of fresh baked goods. You can try to resist but one of the Mexican breads is a perfect starter to pair with your coffee. 5 stars for the food, I am giving a star less for the service which seemed a bit slow and can be improvised. After reading the great reviews on trip advisor about their chilaquiles , we ordered a chilaquiles with eggs, a frittata, two coffees and the green juice. The chilaquiles bowl did look very appealing when it came in with two sunny side up eggs on the top. The dish actually tasted very good, was tangy savory and spicy all at once, portion was huge. I loved the frittata too, was well seasoned and perfect portion for one person. Overall had a fantastic brunch experience. The place is super noisy and can have a long wait but one can bear the noise and wait for the delicious food. I came to this place - solo mission - on a Sunday at 11am. I had no expectations and was surprised to see that this was definitely the go-to spot for weekend brunchers in La Roma. Young families, hipsters, and young hipsters with their parents comprised the customer base the morning of my visit. There were about 12 people waiting to be seated when I arrived (there was one big party), and the host said the wait for one person wouldn't be too long - it took about 20 minutes for me to be seated. There is a big communal seating table with stools in the center of the restaurant with smaller tables near the entrance and lining the restaurant's side. Modern pop-art covers the long wall and complements the branding and overall vibe of the space. Service is very fast-paced - to be expected in a trendy brunch-style restaurant - so be ready to order everything that you need as soon as you can; don't expect to be waited on hand and foot. I ordered green tea and chilaquiles with two fried eggs that came with a side of beans. The tea was good (better than average) as were the chilaquiles - flavorful salsa, crispy hearty chips, avocado, it was a good-sized portion and the side of beans in salsa added complexity to the mix whenever I needed a change of flavor. Overall, it felt like a modern take on chilaquiles compared to some of my other experiences with the dish. I loved chef Eduardo Garcia's Lalo! so much that I visited twice in the same day during my almost one-week food adventure in Mexico City. The following night I also dined at chef Eduardo's more upscale Maximo Bistrot Local across the street. Out of a recommendation of a chef, I stopped by Lalo! to taste the huevos con escamole (ant larvae/insect caviar). Along with eggs with ant larvae, I tried their coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, and croissant. The croissant was freshly made and crisp just like in France. Chef is an expert it seems in French cuisine and technique. That morning no one spoke any English so I had to speak Spanish to place my order. I loved the space and the food so much. It is the kind of low-key place I wouldn't mind stopping by for breakfast every morning. I returned to Lalo! the same day to try their dinner options. That evening, there was an English speaker that made ordering and conversion a bit easier for me. He recommended the freshly made octopus, but I wasn't in the mood for pasta. Wowza! If you have one place to go in Mexico City, this is the place. I went there twice, but I wish I had gone there every day throughout my stay in Mexico City. Easily the best meal I've had during my stay: The French toast is incredible, easily the best french toast I've had ever; the larvae scrambled eggs was unbelievable; the chorizo egg was pretty spectacular; and the beet juice was extraordinary. We arrived on a Tuesday morning and there was plenty of people waiting outside. We signed in and were actually seated fairly quick. This is most definitely a tourist spot, most of the patrons were tourists. I ordered the chilaquiles with a fried egg. They were very good and not spicy at all. If you want more spicy make sure to mention that to your server. We also tried the French toast which was delicious, a bit too sweet but reasonable if shared. Lalo! used to be a fantastic must-go place whenever you visited Mexico City but not anymore. The place is still packed which would lead you to believe the place is still great but don't be fooled. The food is so-so, it doesn't taste bad but it's not something to write home about and it still packs a hefty price tag which just isn't worth it anymore. The only reason I did not give the restaurant 5 stars is because they did not have the tacos w/ lechon or any substitute for the meat. Brilliant place. I happened upon Lalo! during a walk back to my place (from Máximo Bistrot!) in Roma with a friend who is a local. The open floor plan and poppy colors drew me in, and I found myself there for brunch the next day. When I say 'I found myself,' I really mean it. The incredible layered flavors of my huevos rancheros soothed my soul. And I hear the chilaquiles are even better. Next time. Lalo! One of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time! This place is a Mexican/French Bistro, located in a cool part of Mexico City. The design of this place is long communal seating, with a huge table that runs the length of the restaurant. The kitchen is open, so you can see the magic being worked behind the scenes. Along the wall is a huge mural, or psychedelic cartoon characters saying weird things, or wanting to eat each other, or tripping out. The menu is varied, but with items like authentic Mexican Chiliquiles and French Croque Misseur / Madame that were absolutely delicious. The Chiliquiles were served with a green spicy avocado and tomatillo sauce that was paired nicely with the sour cream drizzled across the top for a combo of hot & cool. The serving were huge, served in trendy dinnerware. The food was some of the best breakfast I had on the entire trip. The coffee didn't include refills, but I think that's an American expectation to be able to fill up on coffee. The waitstaff didn't speak English, but they were patient and understanding. They also have all sorts of interesting publications available for take-home at the entrance of the place. Out in front of this place is a mascot-car with the same artwork painted on the side. This was the first meal we had on our trip to Mexico City and we were incredibly impressed. The restaurant is trendy and honestly feels like it would fit right in with the US, but they sell some Mexican classics that you absolutely cannot find in America. This menu was a lot of fun. We tried the stuffed and fried zucchini flowers and loved them. The cheese was light but flavorful and the flowers were so crunchy. We also tried the roasted cauliflower. It came with a really good red pepper sauce. We split a four cheese pizza and I'm glad we tried it. The cheese was stretchy and light and had some punch from a funkier cheese. It had Carmelo es onions which really complimented the four cheeses. I did not really love the service there. The waiter was really pushy about our order even though what we ordered was more than enough food for us. The service was quick and we were never missing anything though. Didn't bother us! Their pastries are beautiful, and taste good too. The yogurt is made in house along with granola and fruit. We are able to order in Spanish but the people sitting next to us did not speak any Spanish at all. One of the staff spoke very good English so have no worries about that. Amazing food and great service ! Since we walked in we were greeted immediately and offered fresh bread, the food was really fresh and a had lots of flavor. I had chilaquiles which were good, but not any better than I have had in the states. For the price, I expected a lot more. I'd recommend going to a street food stand for better quality food at a better price. From the Flor de Calabaza that is stuffed with some kind of miracle cheese, the amazing french toast (which is dessert not breakfast) to the incredible ruben it was all amazing!! I must be honest, I hate celery... it is a terrible veggie, but I ordered the mozzarella and fig salad which had tons of celery and some amazing dressing... I didn't share!! It was so good! We walked by Lalo! and it seemed to be the popping place to eat breakfast in CDMX. They were able to sit 10 of us within 30 minutes, which was great considering how packed it was. Very trendy crowd, dog friendly with water bowls outside, and the presentation of the food drew us in. Chilaquiles were okay, but the flavors didn't quite pop for any of us who tried them. I also got the Croque Madame, which despite its presentation and lofty price was just not quite there flavor-wise either. Would I go back for the juice bar and various cafe-like beverages? Definitely. But as far as food is concerned, we ate at much better places. Also NSFW Disclaimer. 7/10 of had a severe date with the porcelain throne after eating the eggs here.
