Hillside Pavers - Courtyard driveway in Fullerton, Ca.

    Hillside Pavers

There are renovations that improve a home -- and then there are renovations that fundamentally…read morerecalibrate how that home exists within its environment. What Byron Schley and the team at Hillside Pavers delivered for us falls squarely into the latter category. Ours is one of the oldest houses on the block, my grandfather built it himself in the early seventies so needless to say there is sentimental value here, the years were told loudly in its dated facade ever more blindly as one by one and year by year the houses around us became more modern and desirable and that contrast was ever more noticeable when it became every other house on the block. Before this project, our front yard was little more than a narrow, uninspired strip adjacent to the public sidewalk that functioned more like spillover from the street than usable property. It did nothing to reflect the scale or architectural presence of our three-story, beach-adjacent home. Today, that same footprint operates as a private, structured courtyard -- a defined outdoor living space that feels intentional, modern, and architecturally integrated. The Techo-Bloc paver installation is executed with geometric discipline and clean proportional balance. The contrasting border trim sharpens the layout, and the modular patterning reads refined rather than repetitive. Where water once pooled visibly, the drainage now performs efficiently and invisibly -- The upgraded water line alone was transformative. What used to produce barely a trickle now delivers pressure so strong it rivals commercial output .The underground drip irrigation system is intelligently concealed beneath the hardscape and reemerges precisely within the base of our large entry planters. It is automated, timer-controlled, and calibrated for plant health without visual clutter. For us gardening is a foreign labor, the system removes guesswork and replaces it with precision. It lays the groundwork for what will be Madagascar jasmine and Rainbow's End climbing roses to ascend the custom trellis Speaking of the trellis -- it is a custom design by Byron himself and serves as the architectural anchor of the entire entry sequence. Its linear steel geometry frames the approach to the home, introduces vertical rhythm, and gives the courtyard presence and scale. The black powder-coated aluminum slat fencing, set atop a raised paver foundation, creates privacy without heaviness. The laser-cut gate beneath the trellis introduces texture and artistry, especially when lit from behind at night. And the lighting system integrated along the fence base and entryway is hospitality-grade in execution. The perimeter wash creates a subtle floating effect. The laser-cut gate panels glow from behind in layered depth rather than harsh brightness. With full color customization available, the space can transition from understated architectural white to vibrant holiday displays with precision. It feels closer to a Ritz-Carlton courtyard or private club environment than a residential frontage. Most importantly, the project didn't just improve appearance -- it created usable square footage. It has become the preeminent gathering space of our home. it is upscale functional living space. The neighborhood response has been immediate .Neighbors who we barely knew for years have introduced themselves. Passersby stop to compliment the change. The property now projects the level of architectural coherence it always deserved. We approached this cautiously. Prior experiences made us exacting and demanding clients. Byron handled that with patience and professionalism. When questions arose, they were addressed. The end result reflects accountability and pride in workmanship. Hillside Pavers is not inexpensive -- but quality rarely is. There is a tangible difference between budget work and engineered, finished craftsmanship. This project did not simply beautify our home. It expanded it. If you are seeking exterior transformation that blends infrastructure, architecture, lighting design, and true spatial creation -- Byron Schley delivers work that justifies the investment. The result is not just attractive. It is world class work accompanied by attentive customer service . Rarely do you see people that live by the age old idiom anymore who's motto is the customer is always right! But With this outfit that's exactly what you receive and working with them was transformative . I highly recommend their services to any and everyone who are sick of simply average work and service that only toes the industry line, if you want something more, something world class and a good experience throughout call Byron Schley and hillside pavers (+1 (714) 613-2500) , I cannot sing their praises high enough and this review doesn't even give them the credit they deserve so one last time Thank You Byron and thank the boys down at hillside pavers for an amazing job

We recently completed a major paver project with Hillside Pavers, and I can honestly say the final…read moreresult came out even better than I imagined. We were referred to Hillside Pavers by a close friend who had completed a similar project not long before ours, and that recommendation gave us a lot of confidence going in. After going through the process ourselves, I can absolutely see why they spoke so highly of the company. From the beginning, Byron made the design and estimating process feel very clear and professional. One thing I really appreciated was that he used an iPad on-site to draw out the design, calculate measurements, and price everything very accurately. It was not a vague "ballpark estimate" type of process -- it felt transparent, exact, and easy to visualize, which gave us a lot of confidence moving forward. Byron also helped us finalize the color choices, especially for the walkway, and his suggestions made a big difference in the final look. Roberto, who supervised the on-site construction work, was also excellent. He really listened to my concerns, took the time to discuss details with me, and most importantly followed through in the actual work without any issues. That meant a lot to me because I care about both design and functionality, and he handled both very well. Casandra in the office and Oscar as the business manager were also great throughout the process. They were organized, responsive, and helped keep everything coordinated smoothly, which made the whole experience much less stressful. What stood out most about Hillside Pavers overall was that they listened to our preferences and worked with us instead of pushing a one-size-fits-all solution. The workmanship, communication, and attention to detail were all strong, and the finished project truly transformed the property. During the project and especially after completion, we received numerous compliments from neighbors and friends, which really confirmed for us how well everything came together. I would absolutely recommend Byron, Roberto, Casandra, Oscar, and the entire Hillside Pavers team.

Roman Concrete - Sand-wash Cantilever Steps

    Roman Concrete

Roman Concrete did an exceptional job replacing and extending our driveway…read more We truly appreciated the owner, Raul, for his professionalism and patience. He took the time to explain every detail, visited our home twice, and remained flexible when we decided to adjust the extension area. The crew was efficient, friendly, and equipped with impressive machinery. We were particularly struck by the value offered; Roman Concrete was the only company to provide 3500 PSI concrete while maintaining a very competitive price. Their attention to detail was outstanding--from the thorough cleanup to the fact that two team members stayed for four hours just to ensure the concrete dried undisturbed. My husband and I highly recommend Roman Concrete. The final result is beautiful, and we look forward to working with them again in the future.

DO NOT HIRE ROMAN CONCRETE / RAUL…read more Extremely disappointing experience with a large residential decorative/sandwash concrete project. The finished concrete has major inconsistencies in appearance. Within a relatively short time after installation, the concrete also developed a gritty/friable surface, ongoing shedding of sand and small particles, and areas where aggregate appears to be loosening. I have now had to obtain the ready-mix batch tickets, consult concrete professionals, and arrange an independent petrographic examination to determine why new concrete is deteriorating. After reviewing the batch tickets, I also discovered that the concrete mix used did not follow Top-Cast's published mix-design guidance for this type of finish. To make matters worse, Roman also sent a preliminary lien notice involving my neighbor's property, which created an entirely separate issue that never should have involved my neighbor. I spent a significant amount of money on this project and should not be dealing with uneven workmanship, deteriorating concrete, forensic testing, and lien-related problems afterward. I would absolutely not hire this company again. Steer clear. _________________________________________________________________________ Responding to Roman Concrete / Raul Comment 9/14/26 - Raul - The appearance issue was present at job completion. I wrote the review because you asked me to and that you acknowledged the issue and would replace the affected. It is now 3 months later and you still have not done so. The remaining issues were also brought up at this time. You said it is normal and give it a month. After a month the problem persisted. Then you said give it another month. Then you said give it a year. *See sand in joint picture in my review. This was widespread through all concrete and was taken 2.5 months after completion. - Raul - You have returned to the property and done nothing. The affected panel is not replaced and I didn't decline. THIS IS A LIE as you are worried about your business review. You stated the concrete may not match and I said it has to match. You said it may cause cracking and I said don't crack it. Sealing the concrete is a quick fix that I will not accept. I was forced to determine the causes as you would just say "I truly dont know what happened". It is no longer speculation and a legal case is building. The concrete testing professional to independently evaluate you mention was my idea. You stated it is too expensive to do. I had to offer to split the bill with you just get it done. - Raul - You used a mix that was a against Top-Casts "Placing and Finishing Guidelines". The Guidelines are there for a reason. Yes it states 60/40 fine to coarse aggregate. The mix you used was 71/29 fine to coarse aggregate which means the mix contains nearly 20% more sand then recommended in their guidelines. Additionally, their guidelines state a 3/4 coarse aggregate to use. You used 3/8" coarse aggregate. You really didn't follow any guidelines. I think following guidelines is important. Not sure what everyone else thinks. This is also important as now my problem is EXCESS SAND shedding off the surface 3 months later. You used an overly sand heavy mix that was outside their guidelines in both sand to aggregate ratio and aggregate size. It doesn't matter who you order your concrete from (i.e. Robertsons). It is not there problem. You could have ordered from anywhere and requested the correct mix design. The rebar installation was also not quality. I did not bring this up before but since you did I will. You had rebar with no dobies. Rebar without dobies is pointless. I requested dobies. Additionally, your team drove the heavy equipment right over the expansive side yard rebar and smashed it straight into the ground. It was never fixed. It is now pointless. I should have said something at the time but we were already having issues over roadbase compaction and concrete thickness so I got tired and let it go. Yes you are now paying for the concrete testing after you said you wouldnt and are now in a corner. My neighbors address is very different from mine. The prelim of my neighbors property was done on purpose. Robertsons was not paid for an extended period of time and the issue took forever to clear up. You have returned and done nothing. You have been trying your best to get out of it.
