It's been in business for many years, but the outside yard sale feeling makes the place stand-offish to me. A friend was moving and needed to get rid of furniture and goods. This place is pretty crazy - so much of the stuff is outdoors that I would be reluctant to go by here til several months after the rainy season ends - that way more stuff has come in and rotten crappy stuff has gone out! There are plenty of interesting oddities and lots of junk here - the pricing seems to be capricious and often a bit higher than I would expect given the curation and provenance. This is not a flea market, more like a fun house of eclectic findings and randomness. Not for the faint of heart, haha. You definitely have to like searching through piles and layers of stuff, to find those treasures. But well worth it! Came here to buy a desk and wasn't expecting for some of their vintage items to be so expensive but was glad I came because I got exactly what I needed. I was looking for a desk where I could do my art work on and didn't need anything fancy. The guy showed me a few desks and tables and I finally found a beat up but firm heavy duty wood table for $45, which was around my budget. The man was very helpful and sweet and even tried to help me unscrew the legs so the table could fit in my car. Seeing that it was a huge hassle to get the legs off I just paid him $10 to delivery to my house across the way, which cost $55 total and even though it might seem like a lot the fact is that nowadays you can NOT get a firm heavy duty table for that cheap. I feel good about this purchase and I scored... maybe in the future I might actually refurbish this table and make it look a little better. Thanks SPFM2! read more

Ok listen. I live in the neighborhood and have been happily sifting through the broken glass and moldering bric-a-brac for seven years or so. It used to be cheap and now it's expensive. Every time I go there now I get quoted some ridiculous price for something I could get for a couple bucks at goodwill. This is not a curated boutique. Yes, this place looks like a junkyard on first glance. And yes, some of the stuff falls more into the "junk" category. And yes, they don't exactly perform "upkeep" on the inventory. When it rains, it rains on everything outside. When it's hot, it bakes everything outside. But if you're crafty, and if you come willing to dig through the indoor and outdoor labyrinth of STUFF...you can score. This place is a Superfund toxic waste dump. It's full of rusted out metal furniture from various medical facilities, complete with empty plastic barrels that contained god knows what type of chemicals. Every container is full of dirty water and bugs. The glassware is also from medical labs - how about an empty beaker that once held some medical waste? Well, San Pablo Flea Market can help you out with that. The inside of the joint stinks of mice droppings and worse. Not sure why or how it stays in business. Shudder. Stay far away. read more

I used to live near here and would go often, here are some cool things I've found there: 1. an intact 16mm movie projector and hundreds of movies from the Richmond School District including several Schoolhouse Rock movies and a horriffic mime troupe movie from the 70's called "Different, but Alike". I used to come here fairly often with my husband and daughter. We would rummage through junk and buy it even though it was overpriced. I think we felt a bit sorry for the guy. He just always seemed unhappy. We wanted his place to continue to be around, since it was in our neighborhood and we were being neighborly. So the last time I was there, I asked him to quote me on a small fiberglass chair. I told him that it would be for my daughter and he flipped out and said, "I don't sell emotionally, I don't care if it's for your daughter!" And then walks away. I'm not sure why I told him it was for my daughter, maybe because I was holding her then. I wasn't looking for a discount since I buy his stuff for the price he tells me. Til now I'd never met a flea market I didn't like. But this place is literally a heap of junk mixed in with more junk. I'm not joking, I don't understand how they even manage to stay in business with the crap they sell. I didn't even enjoy browsing - everything was so dirty and broken. In good faith, and because I'm a sucker, I brought a candle holder to the dude at the front to ask the price, and he actually had the gall to try to charge me $5. I wish I had taken a photo just to illuminate how offensive that offer was. It was one of those small tea light holders you can buy at IKEA for $1. I stared at him in shock, slowly put down the suddenly offensive item, and silently walked away. Don't try to screw a bargain shopper, m'friend. She won't return. read more

I agree with Evelyn G.'s 6/30/15 wonderment over people entering this flea market perhaps expecting an artisanal North Berkeley farmers market? What DO they come here expecting? That said, this is a great place to come when you want to repurpose items and hunt for treasures just as they are. I've purchased the most amazing, comfortable chair here and a great 1920's Art Deco lamp. If you love to treasure hunt this place is for you. I have always received courteous service here and friendly exchanges with Claude, and I have overheard some of the ridiculous things he gets asked like a privileged guy actually asking to buy his fixtures! Uhm, he's using those! I've also heard others try to get something already low priced for nothing under the guise of bargaining so I can't say it surprises me if once in a great while he puts someone right in their place. Baffled by the lousy reviews... did people think they were going to an artisanal farmer's market in North Berkeley? Yes, it is messy and disorganized as all get out (don't bring kids and I wouldn't recommend flip-flops), but it's enormous AND it's actually as cheap as you'd expect all the other "salvage" and "recycled" places to be. The San Pablo Flea Market s a wonderland of junk and treasure, and you can find just about anything there - just not by walking over to aisle 14 (and yes, sometimes you have to retrace your steps to escape from dead end furniture routes). The man who runs it (owner?) has always been *hella* nice to me, and I've never been charged more than 5 bucks for whatever haul i'm balancing in my arms, on a given day. read more

I'm unsure as to how to rate this place. On one hand, the selection here is immense. I really recommend visiting if you're interested in purchasing art, mirrors, or records. They have plenty of it, for relatively inexpensive. On the other hand, this might be the messiest flea market I've ever visited. It's open air, so everything outside has really seen better days. There is a lot of JUNK here - broken and water-logged goods, trash all over the floor, things that could never be sold. I recommend visiting in closed-toe shoes and not coming by with children; there was quite a bit of broken glass all over the place! Junk piled atop of junk, there are whole sections of the store that are impossible to look through. However, if you have a few hours free, I think it'd definitely be worth it to try your hand here! I came across some great cheap art, really interesting chairs and desks, a huge record collection, quite a bit of neat clothes, huge mirrors, and a bunch of knick knacks. They even sell window flames, scrap wood, and tile, if you don't mind digging through dirty and broken bits! Unfortunately, I did have a bit of a bad experience with the owner, who seemed to imply that I stole a jacket. I offered to let him search me, which he refused, and then he proceeded to pester me about something I told him I put back. I ended up leaving out of sheer discomfort. That said, I totally see myself returning, so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. I should note that they're closed on Mondays. Everywhere I saw online said they're open every day, which is incorrect. I was also unable to find a single working business number. I want to clarify that the San Pablo Flea Market is not a flea market at all, it's actually a landfill. Buy a glove here, and you get some complimentary fingers to go with it. I've never seen so much toxic garbage. Seriously, Clyde probably has a bin full of used syringes next to the broken toys. If I taught a course on safety violations in the workplace, this is where we would take our yearly field trip. I'm concerned about all of the broken glass, rusted electronics, rusted batteries, sharp debris and stacks of rusty tools waiting to topple over into panes of glass. The disorganization is on par with the landfill. But that's only the part of the hazard. Clyde, the owner is right out of a Rob Zombie film. He wanders around in overalls, watching over his landfill with this creepy sinister look in his eyes. I've witnessed him screaming at people for politely enquiring about prices. He gets really upset if you counter offer, takes it personally, and makes obscene sometimes threatening remarks noted by other yelpers. I've seen him do that in front of children. You ask "isn't haggling prices what people do at flea markets?" You forgot, this is a landfill. If you wear steel toed boots, get a tetanus shot beforehand and don't question Clyde, you might just make it out alive, but don't bring your kids! read more

There's some cool stuff in here somewhere. Finding it can be a challenge, but I'm always up for a good challenge! There are some good records and 45s in there, but there's not a lot of space to sort through them and your fingertips will be dustier than any of those grooves. There are some cool old books in there, but you have to somehow contort your body like you're playing a game of twister to get to them. One leg in front of this pile of books on the floor, the other behind another pile, one hand stabilizing you on the shelf behind you, and the other free to try to grasp the one you think might be worth the whole ordeal. Tip: bring a flashlight and a milk crate. The people who own this place are awesome, down to earth and as accommodating as possible. Just go there and check it out for yourself! read more

If your a collector or an artist this is the place to visit. Having visited twice and always around closing time. I've found a few treasures to repurpose. Maybe it was just my luck but I seemed to gravitate to all the goods placed in my path. Almost as if Clyde the owner knew that these where items I might need. This place at first glance looks like a bomb went of and you may find dead bodies laying around, been here many times and so far have found no bodies. The other hand there is some very cool stuff here and much cheaper than Omega Salvage. You can work the guy on the price and you almost always win. Don't jsut pass this by because of first impressions just think what some people thought of you till they got to know you. I usually love places like this. There is a huge yard out front where everything is left out in the elements so that is a bad sign right off the bat. Inside is dark and there is one small area in which to walk but there are so many treasures to be found. Why the one star review? Well, last time I went here I found so many things I wanted. There was a woman there and I asked what the price was for some of the items. She informed me that the owner wasn't there and she had no authority to price anything so I had to wait for his return. Since I had only been outside I decided to wait for him while I poked around inside. When the owner finally did arrive he informed me that every single item I set aside was reserved for somebody else. I had waited an hour for nothing! The one item that I found inside was so outrageously priced that I am sure it has yet to be sold. I am always wary of places that do not have clearly priced items. I never know if they up-price based on how I look or handle myself. Avoid this place at all costs. The few cool items they have are not worth the hassle or trouble to get a price or even a fair price. read more

As others point out, it is not a flea market--being immobile and under a single vendor. If a flea market somewhere has individual stalls this big, that might be a similar experience. It is a very large junk shop, in the best sense of that term. Over the years that I've gone there--usually in an unplanned stop on the way to somewhere else--I've bought dozens of little and big treasures: an excellent little step ladder, plastic boxes, a metal storage cabinet, electrical cables, various bits of household hardware, etc. It is not the most organized place, but if you take a few minutes to browse through the heaps and stacks--you might just find something you didn't even realize you were looking for. read more

Among the lots of salvage yards along the San Pablo corridor (e.g., Ohmega, Urban Ore, etc.), this is one place where you could possibly find a bargain. It's hit or miss. And much of their inventory sits out in the rain during the winter. But I've found some great bargains here and it's any easy stop. read more

I've been going through the reviews and they're a little disheartening- because either my camp (the 4-5 stars), or the other camp (the 1starers), is suffering from mass-delusion (both these perspectives are frightening, if you stop to think about it). Anyway, on to the practical- this is a junk yard, not a flea market. Things are piled on everywhere, and yes, this is not toddler-safe. There's broken stuff everywhere, tangled wires, rusty stuff, the occasional mold, shards of glass--you name it. This is not a fancy vintage store with polite and overly designed labels; it's a dig-to-take-home kind of place. The owner is a very kind soul, born in the South and teaching himself Ibo (look it up), but he ain't nice- he won't kiss your ass or walk you through the story if every piece. He's smart, he's funny, and my 2.5yo loves him because he's a no-nonsense kind of guy who won't take crap from entitled people. His sisters and high-school nephews work there as well sometimes, and I've seen their family dynamic (it's awesome). Mr. Claude rarely negotiates, but since I never do myself but keep buying what I think has fair prices, over time his deals for me have gotten better, and better, and better. The stuff there is all over the place, and you can as easily find mid-century as you can crystal glasses, organic soap, or wrought iron garden furniture- you just have to look. Hard. For me it's been a few years of going regularly, and I bought a lot of gorgeous stuff- some ready to use, some to refurbish into upcycled furniture. It's a hunt, and I personally love it. I've taken many of my family there, as some are builders and some are artists- they all found something to work with. read more

this place is like a smaller version of Urban Ore, with a very nice owner and plenty of things to browse. half of the merchandise are out in the yard so watch where you are going and don't fall, because you'll land in a world of hurt. a tetanus shot and goggles recommended for the clumsy. want a chair? depending how much you want to spend, you can leave with either a newly upholstered leather bench or a bucket. there are plenty of lockers and desks outside and, once you're in the building, you need to roll up your sleeves and cross your fingers. the owner will deliver for a fee, but there were many times while i was here that i wished i had a truck. read more

San Pablo Flea Market is more like a salvage yard than a Flea Market. The name is a bit of a miss representation. They have stuff that is: what's left from a yard sale that didn't sell, wacky crazy wtf, cool retro, and some ready to use items. I like that there are no prices. Why? I can determine in my head what I'd pay with out being influenced. At first I was thinking maybe the price changes according to the person. If it does, I don't care. Let the buyer make their own mind and then make an offer. There is some straight up junk. However, I have found some great items. Like a wrought iron plant stand for $10. I've never seen one like it, and it isn't damaged and only needs a fresh coat of flat black. Most everything is outdoors in isles. It's packed and stacked which can be tricky to maneuver. I would wear closed toe shoes. There has been sharp pieces of metal poking out or a random piece of glass lying on the ground. The indoors is a little dark/dingy, but good finds are lurking in the shadows. I like to come here when I'm feeling creative or working on an art project. I found some wrought iron pieces that wrapped columns at the university for $10 a piece. I now have a unique way to hang paintings and a piece of history. This place is fun. Take it for what it is, and you could walk out with some major treasure. Take a few minutes to talk to the owners. They are wonderful. It's a husband and wife team. I dropped a star for the over crowding of the yard area. I think some stuff could be let go, and other stuff could be showcased in a brighter light. read more

Junkwonderland! I'm an artist, so I go to find weird stuff that inspires me, but I've also gotten some super cool/weird furniture & house-y stuff, too. I bought this one...um..sculpture thing that's made of layers and layers of wood and looks like a giant TOOTH...with a little door in it! The roots are the legs. Hard 2 explain but trust me, it's wonderfully and weirdly awesome. I also got a load of 1950's diner plates with a very vintage design that I adore. I've never left empty handed and the man who owns it (crap, I forgot his name) and his daughter are super nice. Plus they deliver :) read more
