So my boyfriend and I wanted to visit his childhood favorite restaurant. This was my first time eatting here and this Chinese restaurant was really clean and very intimate. The lights were low which was a plus for me!!! And there was no buffet which I didn't like! So we order our food and I didn't like how you couldn't customize your food you had to eat it as is! The waiter didn't understand what we was asking for so we just ordered the food and let me tell you, the chicken wings comes with any of the 7 sauces they have on the menu. Our chicken wings wasn't done all the way and was very chewy and nasty they didn't taste like anything. I got the general so chicken and fried rice. The fried rice had no vegetables in it! So they just added soy sauce and called it fried rice and it was nasty!!! Then my boyfriend got shrimp fried rice and chow lo main and he loved his food. Food was ready and hot. But the calamari appetizer tasted like it had been out for a while. It was to be lightly breaded but was more regularly breaded and dry and hard in places. Good thing i had sauce of my own to help revive it bc i wasn't going to drive the distance back to return it. We only received 1 spring roll but had ordered 2. Just ordered through door dash, it got here. The bag was staples shut, no leaks or wet spots on the bag. Inside everything was still in their containers again no leaking or sticky lids. The food was really good. We ordered egg rolls, potstickers, beef and broccoli, pepper steak, and beef rice noodles. The potstickers were true potstickers not the thin gyoza wrapper. I love the thicker doughy wrappers and it is HARD to find places that have that. That alone sold me! My husband liked the egg rolls. Beef and broccoli was good, good flavor. The pepper steak was really good. Really good flavor, better than the typical Americanized Chinese food. The beef rice noodles were kind of bland. We are definitely going back again. My family has been going here for years! It may not be the fanciest restaurant, but the food makes up for that. I've had everything from the appetizers do egg drop soup, spring rolls, and friend wontons, to the meals of shrimp, beef, and (my favorite) the mala chicken. I don't know what brand of hot tea they use, but my entire family always gets it and I drink (no joke) about 8 cups throughout a meal. It is a bit pricer than other take out Chinese food, but the quality and taste make up for that. The only negative I can think of, is there is no light by the entrance so making a left hand turn onto Broad Street can be a little rough. read more

Man, what a surprise this was. Chose this on a whim - I wanted Chinese, it was close to work, so I got Chinese. I can't recall the dishes we had, but we sampled each others, and it was simply delicious. We kept it simple round one - but it was enough that when I want Chinese in the area, I'll be back. Stuck at Mt. Carmel East and hospital food sucks. I was watching Crazy Rich Asians and desperately craved good Chinese food. This place delivered SUPER fast and piping hot. Food was pretty decent. Service not bad although I had to ask for napkins and prices were reasonable. Although the menu needs some work, the only thing listed in the dishes is the protein so you have no idea what veggies are in it without asking. They sell beer but it was not on the menu which was weird. The restaurant itself could used some sprucing up as it looks a little run down and the music being played is not Chinese music which was also odd. Been thinking about going here, and yesterday my mom was in town and it was handy, so we went. As others mentioned, it's in a strip mall, but very nice inside. Service was very good, and the food is, of course, similar to other Chinese places but with a few dishes I'd never seen. The appetizers, an egg roll and shrimp tempura, were pretty good. Mom got garlic shrimp, which had decent-size shrimp and lots of vegetables in a flavorful sauce. I had honey walnut chicken: battered chicken in a sweet sauce with honey, orange peel,walnuts, and a few pieces of pineapple. I'll be back eventually- it's not very close to me, but there are definitely more things on the menu that I want to try. read more

We just received our order from Lantern about 10 minutes ago. Although it was piping hot, the food was the worst we ever had from there. My husband ordered General Tso's and I had the Sweet and Sour Chicken. Both orders were "off", mushy yet dry. It seems like the batter wasn't cooked all the way on the pieces of chicken, or with some pieces, there wasn't chicken in the pieces of batter at all. Then there were some pieces of chicken that was very dry, others that felt undercooked. I'm very disappointed with our orders today and probably won't order from them again. Most restaurants don't understand that the waiter/hostess are the restaurant so when you get a bad one it ruins the experience i have been going to the lantern for many years it was not the best chinese food i have ever had but the staff was always friendly Today I ordered an egg roll and confirmed with the waiter that I don't eat pork. Then I ordered fried rice again with no pork. Order comes out with ... pork. Mistakes are made no problema. I waived down another waiter who I told to redo it. The first waiter comes out with the plate that had pork and in the middle of the restaurant starts to argue with me. He said that he told me it had pork in it. After a couple of strange incidents ( a car drove into the building being one), Lantern has had a little facelift. They need to continue to path on the inside ( wallpaper falling off etc). That being said. The food is good and consistent when eating in. I like their friend rice, soup options, and assortment of friend wings. Their food is geared towards American tastebuds and isn't as spiced/hot. Also, having ordered takeout recently, it's better to eat on the restaurant. The food doesn't travel well and tends to get soggy. This makes any fried dishes sad. read more

Not impressed. The food was soggy and bland, not what a stir fry should be. I had the Lantern Chicken and it was barely edible the chicken had been lightly breaded, but then was not appropriately cooked as it was soggy and pale. The vegetables tasted as though they had been sweetened with sugar and then steamed instead of stir fried. I question whether any of this food was cooked in a wok. I cook better than this! Wow! What a pleasant surprise, don't let modest accommodations deter you. The staff is friendly and attentive (Shannon was very sweet and hardworking). Little details like linen napkins, pleasant piano music a, and esthetic water glasses go a long way in creating an elegant dining experience. The food really is the star, I had the Mala trio and the beef and chicken were cut and velvety into perfect size morsels, additionally the deveined and completely peeled shrimp were cooked to perfection which could only be done by adding them to the wok after the other ingredients (a technique not always utilized). The fresh garlic, jalapeño, green onion, and hot spicy oil sauce was some of the best I've had anywhere. I enjoyed the authentic kim-chi as a side that was well spiced and delicious. I have to admit, this is not a place I would have expected to find in Blacklick. There are plenty of "American Chinese" classics there, but there's also some really great "specials" - whole fish, Chinese style string beans, hunan lamb - all excellent. I've not actually eaten in there, as we tend to go for takeout, but the staff have been on top of things every time I've called in an order, and the restaurant always seems like a nicely decorated, clean, welcoming space. Last night my Dad suggested that we go out for Chinese at the Lantern. We pulled up and I was surprised that it was in a small strip mall. Once inside it was like we were in a totally different world. The dinning room was decorated with Asian items and the tables had linen tablecloths and napkins. I had a very hard time deciding what to order as everything sounded so good. I ordered the Emerald Trio. It had chicken, beef, shrimp, and onions served on a bed of crunchy noodles. It was delicious! The beef was very tender and none of the meat had any weird chewy parts. I tasted my son's Sweet and Sour Chicken and it was also very good. I usually never eat my entire meal at a Chinese restaurant, but this was so good I ate it all. I would eat here again. The service was top notch and my water glass was never empty. The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is because they did not offer any combo plates or family meals. I would have liked to try several different dishes. read more

Sunday before noon. We were a party of 7 celebrating an adult Birthday. No balloons, cake, or gifts at the table. Just a celebratory meal. Our server continued to turn and immediately respond, many times before instruction was complete. This may sound like a PLUS, but not if she chases everybody's drink one at a time. The menu is limited in description. Item name and price. Vegetables, and accompaniments are not listed. The server had vague knowledge. "Brown sauce". Now the hostess is also taking part of our food orders. I immediately felt like we were being rushed. There was only one other table occupied in the restaurant, and they were already eating. The lunch menu had a small selection of items that were Combo specials. These came with rice, egg roll or soup. Everything else came with rice only. If price is a concern. This is a sit-down lunch on a budget. Cheap price for moderate portion. Our appetizers came out staggered. Soup for mom. Back to the kitchen. My egg roll(which I passed over to my wife). Why do servers not know to serve a woman first. Now she comes out with the other egg roll. Back to get ramekins of hot mustard, and duck sauce. Our food came out the same way. I found it mediocre to taste. It was not bad. It was HOT. Just not spicy on any of the spicy items. Mom said the soup was OK. The reason she chose this for her Birthday was quite simple. She orders the War Su Guy. It's one of only 2 places she's ever been that serves it with the Yellow chicken gravy. For those not familiar with this, it's deep fried chicken breast with gravy, and rice. Her grievance in her favorite place was "Sauce on side". Guess what? Here's your dish, drenched in gravy, with sauce on the side. No matter how we tried to point this out, mom gave up, and started scraping. No one in our party was overwhelmed to the point of "You must try this". The place was clean, and they were eager to pre-bus the table. The place did have about 6 tables now on our way out. Super fast, we picked up our food and it was ready in ten minutes. We loved the Mala String Beans! They were spicy and full of flavor. The General Tso's chicken was not as spicy as we hoped. The menu labeled it as spicy but we should've requested it to be spicier because it was just sweet. The Pork Fried Rice was also very good and flavorful. I hadn't been to Lantern in probably 15 years, but it's where my dad recently wanted to go for his birthday. Used to go a lot when I was a kid and always remember positive experiences. Walked in and it's still pretty much the same as I remember. Some would maybe say that's a bad thing they haven't redecorated in over a decade or more, but I don't mind. It was clean and the food was good, so that's all I really care about. I ordered a Pu Pu Platter and Orange Chicken. I haven't had a Pu Pu platter in sooooooo long! I don't know why, as they consist of all my favorite things! I could probably eat just several of them and be one happy girl. Orange chicken was good, pretty typical...had good flavor and was crispy. I think the owner was our waiter, and he was very friendly and attentive. Orange chicken actually wasn't on the menu, but they made it for me anyway (they had orange shrimp, so I don't think it was a hard request to fulfill). My family has been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years and not much has changed, which is a very good, comforting thing! The food is traditional American Chinese that I find to be of higher quality than the others in the area. The food is more flavorful, the prices are affordable, and the portions are very filling. The staff is also incredibly attentive and although the decorations haven't been updated since at least the early 90s, I find it very cozy - especially with a cup of tea! My family usually goes for the chicken dishes. Due to dietary restrictions, we have to limit soy, so we get everything in the white sauce. They are very accommodating and fix whatever we want in the white sauce. If you are fine having soy, I recommend the mala chicken. It's a unique spicy dish with jalapeños. I haven't found it at any other Chinese restaurant and really enjoy it. read more

The hostess spoke perfectly fine English, but it felt like we were caught in a little comedy riff as she somehow convinced herself we wanted some chicken fried rice as we went on/off hold a few times. I had heard rave reviews from two of my co-workers and so on Tuesday I made a quick trip out to here. It is the closest Chinese (not counting Panda Express) to my job so I was hoping for something good. It was ok but I didn't think it was anything special. I felt like their prices were a little higher than my favorite Chinese places. I am used to seeing numerous combo plates for $6 and cheaper at lunch times. They only had a few combo plates and they were mostly $7-8. I ordered the Kung Pao hoping for something a little spicy and did not get it. The chicken was decent. The egg roll was a disappointment. Second time I've eaten here because the girls at work love this place and both times I've been disappointed. I've given this place 2 chances intentionally and today was my last. I honestly wish I had taken pictures of the food both times so it doesn't seem like I'm making it up but I'm not the type to leave a bad review for nothing. The first time I ate here I ordered the Lo Mein and the noodles were yellow. I've never seen yellow Lo Mein but decided to try it anyway. It tasted like a porta potty smells, kid you not, and it was slimy. I threw it away (expensive Chinese food does not get thrown away lightly). Today was the second time. Our office placed a pretty large order for lunch. I ate my egg roll and started to eat my General Tso's chicken but just as I was about to stick my fork into the rice I noticed something brown covering the middle of the take out box where there is a divider that separates one side from the other. It was a piece of medium length blondish/brownish hair and it was entwined into my fried rice. I really had to pull at the piece of hair to get it all to come out. I don't even want to know if there's more in it. I didn't eat a bite and instantly threw it out. Gave it 2 chances and was disappointed 2 separate times. I won't be back. read more
